No More Excuses
If anyone was allowed to hate classes it was Annie. She made her way to them, although awkwardly through feeling the walls and memorizing each footstep and turn she took through the corridors. When she reached her destination dread raced through her entire body. No sooner had she entered the classroom had she zoomed to the back corner where she wouldn't be seen. When it was time to practice a new spell Annie had to excuse herself. The brunette was sure if she could see, the professor's face would hold a look of pity for her but she made no note of chasing after her or even asking where she was going or if she was okay.
She marched out of the room, drawing attention from others and sped walk a ways down the corridor until she crumpled to the ground. Her head leaned back and felt the cool brick meet her skull. Her hand clutched over her robe above her heart. Her chest tightened feeling like it was about to explode, but she knew this wasn't a panic attack. It was merely her anxiety acting up again. The numerous times she had skipped classes due to this pang in her chest worried her. She was sure her grades were failing and even worse than that was the attention she was drawing that she didn't want.
The brunette closed her eyes and began to calm her breathing, listening to the far off foot steps that echoed the empty corridors. If she listened closely she could hear the own thrumming of her heart, the blood pumping to it quickly as it races. A few more calming breaths and her heart was back to it's regular, therapeutic rhythm. She opened her eyes as if expecting to suddenly see again and sighed as the darkness blocked her vision again. Her accident had taken so much away from her, but she would prove she would still work hard and be a good witch. The brunette glanced around, to no avail yet again she forgot she was hard of sight.
Her hands pushed herself off the ground and her back slowly slid up the cold wall until she was standing again. Where could she go? Classes were still going on but she was determined. She had learned spells before she went blind but she hasn't tried to cast anything around others in fear of harming them or herself. Her hear started thumping again before she shook off the feeling. Where could she go to practice, and not be around other people? Annie stood dumbfounded in the hallway, waiting for inspiration to strike or classes to get out, which ever came first.

Lamik Fillestar had left the Gryffindor common room in something of a hurry. He was headed for the Library, having decided to actually spend his free time on something useful for once. The thing is that it was becoming clearer and clearer that if he wanted to continue being a contributing member of the Gryffindor dueling team, he'd have to practice some of the more difficult spells that he had been putting off actually mastering for a while. Specifically, he really needed to do some research on how best to counteract Mucus Ad Nauseam, or the "Curse of the Bogies", which seemed to be a constant thorn in his and his partner's side during matches.
All of this had to be put on the backburner though when Lamik stumbled upon a familiar face. "Annie?" He said, surprised for a reason that he couldn't quite place. Lamiks unjustified dislike of the Hufflepuff girl had begun melting away very quickly since their discussion back on the Hogwarts Express after Christmas. After all, it was hard to find reasons to hate somebody when they not only refused to give you those reasons but also appeared to be decent human being- not to mention one that was going through a difficult time. "How are you?" He called out, before reminding himself that she might not be able to recognize his voice. "It's Lamik, by the way."

Tap. Tap. Tap The clack of shoes alerted Annie of a person's approach towards her. She spun around to face the general direction of the footsteps. They came to a halt and her breathing stopped, her finger tips beginning to feel fuzzy with nerves. Then her heart nearly leapt out of her chest when the person addressed her. The voice was familiar though, it dawned on her right as he introduced himself. "Come to be rescue my sorry damsel in distress butt again Prince Charming?" The brunette snorted and crossed her arms as she teased the blonde boy.
The next question caught her off guard but she answered it truthfully if not a bit sarcastically. "As for how I'm doing.. y'know just being a useless waste of space. Unable to do charms class, flying and countless other things that I loved doing." She paused her short rant and shrugged. Instead of delving into a pity party she changed the topic. "I don't have the best memory and even though I don't remember you being on the Gryffindor Quidditch team, I do remember you and Saskia were friends or maybe you even liked her." Annie paused and smirked before continuing. "Funny to think about it now but we were rivals a year ago. I didn't even know I potentially liked her last year, gods I thought it was just admiration and I still don't even know. Gah feelings are weird and stupid." She rambled a bit more, waving her hand to dismiss her flustered reaction. Annie shifted her weight in her feet before continuing. "I find it funny though, maybe Saskia put us together to re-kindle a friendship before she vanished, she could've at least rejected us kindly before leaving though."
She let out a huge breath after finishing her short well whatever that was. "..So enough about me, how are you doing?" Annie awkwardly returned the question to him. Sure he'd respond but she was sure he was also going to ask questions like he always did after she ranted. Heck he might've forgotten they even had feuds last year, she almost did. Was she going to bring up his hatred for her again or would things still go smooth sailing as they had been? A tenseness filled her shoulders as she waited silently in the large hallway.

"Rescue you? I don't remember ever doing that." Lamik said, frowning slightly at the use of the term Prince Charming. "I've never known you to really need anyone's help before." While this sentiment was true, it was a bit questionable- Lamik barely knew Annie at all, he hadn't had too much opportunity to see her in times of serious crisis, baring the day on the express. Still, he hoped that the phrase would be at least somewhat encouraging. It was clear, however, that something was wrong now, and so as she continued speaking and he continued listening, Lamik walked up to the wall in front of him, leaned against it, and slid down to a sitting position beside her.
He was just about to say something about her classes when Annie quickly changed the subject, accusing him of "liking" Saskia and admitting that she did too. He barely even listened to what she said after that point, his mind overclocking in an attempt to figure out the best way to respond. Once he realized that she had finished speaking, he said: "Well about Saskia, I actually didn't..." He pursed his lips for a moment and shook his head. "Ok, well, yes I did." The moment he said that though, Lamik quickly changed the subject back to what it was originally. "I mean... flying isn't mandatory. I actually don't attend it anymore myself. Not a big fan of heights, despite what you may believe. As for charms, I'm sure that with enough studying you'll be able to find a workaround to your blindness eventually. Some magical eye thing, maybe? I'm sure those exist. You just need to find the right people to ask." He remained silent for a bit, before finally registering her question and giving a quick, though possibly unsatisfactory, answer. "I'm alright- just heading to the library in the hopes of not humiliating myself in future duels."

The tenseness in her shoulders eased as Lamik began responding casually. His responses always surprised her. Just when she thought he was going to be mad but nope. Annie blinked and her brows furrowed in confusion. "You've never known me period. This school is so giant I don't even know who's in my year, but I guess your right I just put on a tough shell all the time to protect myself from who knows what. Now it's torn down." She sniffed as she heard Lamik slide down the wall to sit next to her.
A small laugh bubbled out of her mouth as Lamik thought over what she had said and finally admitted to the fact. Although the change of conversation happened swiftly and he encouraged her that it would become easier her mind still clouded with worry. "Well unlike you I love heights and flying but if you put me on a broom at my state I'd be in trouble." She chuckled lightly at the thought. "I wonder if we could share a broom- like I could fly it and you'd just give me directions." She shrugged at the thought, knowing that it would probably scare the soul out of him which nearly made her snort.
When he suggested she find something to help her she sighed. "I dunno who I'd even ask or what to ask.. gosh life is so complicated now, it's a wonder how I'm still functioning at all." Annie puffed her bangs out of her face, feeling a bit frustrated. Her anger bubbled down when he said he was headed to the library. "What, you studying? Haha funny, but I had no idea you did dueling.. or perhaps I forgot. Maybe you could practice on me? I wouldn't mind.. or is that not allowed? Can I come watch er- well be there for one of your matches?" Her mood quickly swapped to curiosity and excitement as she began blurting out questions that came to her mind. Dueling wasn't really a huge thing up until the start of this year and she hadn't payed much attention at the time but now that she had a friend in it, it seemed more interesting.
Wait.. Lamik a friend? It seemed so.

"I'd be happy to do that." Lamik said, only half lying."Though I don't actually own a broom, so unless you own one we'll need to ask River for permission to use one of the school brooms. Just name a time and place." While Lamik was afraid of heights, it wasn't really a crippling fear, especially since he was forced to get used to them during his time as seeker. "Just name a time." Hesitating for a moment, the boy quickly added: "Though maybe it would be best if for the first few times I'm the one controlling the broom. Just so that you can get used to being up in the air again."
He sunk a bit lower against the wall. "But yes, I'm in the Gryffindor dueling team. Doing pretty well, actually. I think I am, at least. And of course you can be there for my next duel- though even if I didn't want you there, it's not like I could stop you. As for practicing on you..." Lamik clicked his tongue softly. "I'm not sure you'd want that- it's not fun to be hit by a knockback jinx square in the chest. Or to get your hair set on fire."

The brunette pursed her lips together. "Well.. I still have my broom from when I was on the Quidditch team, we could always use that. River is scary though- he seems to enthusiastic for a professor, something is definitely wrong with him." She blankly stated when he told her what they had to do in order to take flight. Annie snorted when he hesitated and suggested he control the broom. "Ah you don't want me driving the flying stick of death? Good choice. No stress though, it was just an idea and knowing me I'll forget about it anyways."
She shrugged as the conversation skipped back to dueling. Turns out, Lamik was on the team and to his knowledge was doing well. "Well if you haven't been sent to the medical wing I'd say you are doing good. As much as I'd like to come spectate- ah that would just be standing around hearing spells come out of your mouth. That is actually terrifying if I didn't know you were dueling or where you were pointing, and no thanks I want to keep my hair and balance thank you very much." She scratched her head awkwardly, a soft chuckle escaping her mouth.
Her ears caught the sound of class ending and students began to shuffle out of class so she scooched closer to Lamik in avoiding be stepped on or squashed against the brick wall. Soon as the way was clear she wobblily got to her feet and dusted off her robes. "Well, the offer still stands if not I'm sure I'll see you around or run into you again. Bye Lamik!" Annie pressed her hand to the wall, her finger tips tracing the bricks as she glided away from the sitting boy. With a pause she felt the wall end and then turned the corner out of sight.
Nice little chat with Lamik. Perhaps their paths were destined to cross more frequently then they thought? Or maybe Lamik was just in the right place at the right time. Whatever it was, Annie was glad she got to speak with him, he had a calming aura and she felt he could be honest with him. It took her mind off of all the other problems at school. Thanks buddy.
