The duel continued, and now the teams were uneven. While Amadea didn't like to make predictions about the outcomes of the duels she moderated as she didn't want to seem biased in any way, seeing two versus one made it more difficult. Nicholas held his own well, casting a Knockback Jinx toward Bridget that she was able to maneuver away from quickly.

She casted her own Knockback Jinx toward Nicholas, but he was able to avoid it as well. Unfortunately, he was not so quick to avoid the Knockback Jinx that came from Santario's wand. The Slytherin had casted the spell exceptionally well, and as it hit Nicholas, he was blasted backward off of his feet. Amadea winced; the impact from hitting the ground would definitely leave him sore and now he was completely vulnerable to the Slytherin's attacks while he stood up. She wanted to join in the duel and start casting her own spells to help, but that wasn't the way duels worked. Instead, she remained silent and waited to see what the duellists would do next.

Two Flipendos and a Incendio flew across the stage, two of which managed to be dodged as Bridget got back on her game as the one that could not be hit. Santario felt her power surge through her wand with vigor and know the moment the blue energy left it that if Nicholas could not dodge it, he would find himself on the ground. While she did not wish him any actual harm, she did not know him; she found it hard to suppress a half-smile as he found himself on the ground.

She was on fire! Not literally, of course, but her attacks thus far had been pretty impeccable for the most part, and she had cast the first-ever Ventus to split, followed shortly by Henry though she would not know that yet, and now a flawlessly executed Flipendo. It was interesting to look at how she and Bridget grew as a team through their duels and practices together. After all, it was only a few months ago when their first duel started that Santario had been knocked out, and they won by a stroke of luck when one Ravenclaw froze up to the point of removal, and the other forfeited against Bridget.

They should not have won that duel, and while Santario was happy to take the win, she despised quitters. Taking it on until the very end, even in the certainty of defeat, was how you honed your skills and learned how to get better. Nicholas earned some respect for facing them head-on without giving up.

The spell shot out from Nicholas's wand, once more flying towards Bridget. Fighting to enunciate properly through the sneezing was difficult, but he managed it, only unleashing the sneeze once the charm had properly been cast. Still, it was of little use, the older girl seemingly effortlessly dodged out of the way of his incendio charm. Were it not for the sneezing fit he still found himself in, the boy would have cursed, but he could barely open his mouth for long enough to cast spells without falling pray to the curse, let alone complain.

In response, she cast a knockback jinx toward him. But this time he managed to avoid it, the spell careening over his shoulder. But, the joy he felt was short lived, as Santario's spell met its mark. He knew the instant that he felt it that she'd cast it perfectly, the sheer force that hit him dead on the chest was proof of such. The fact that he'd been hit barely registered before he found himself flying through the air and slamming against the ground. The pain, for the moment, at least was dulled by the shock at having been thrown from his feet.

But as he lay there, still sneezing, and entirely aware of just how vulnerable he was, he could feel the dull aches begin to manifest in his back and shoulders. It seemed that he'd more than likely be joining Rose in the hospital wing sooner rather than later.

But he wasn't down and out yet, and he sure as hell wasn't going to give up and accept a loss. Nicholas was many things, but he wasn't out of the duel yet, and as long as he had fight left in his body, he could still grab victory from the jaws of defeat.

With one opponent down, Bridget and Santario both knew what to do next, their wands moving in sync as they incanted the same spell. A double Flipendo was painful but effective, though nothing personal; they simply weren't out here to waste time.

Her spell missed by a hair. If one of theirs was fated to miss, she was content with it being hers, for Santario's cast was something else. From the moment it left her wand, you could tell it was powerful, a brilliant flash of blue flying at their opponent. So much force was behind it, in fact, that Nicholas would be knocked flat on his back.

Not before casting a spell of his own, though, a feat in itself with his violent fit of sneezing. It would hardly be a close call, Bridget neatly ducking out of the fiery spell's way. She had found a rhythm, drawing fire while Santario could concentrate her efforts on tapping into the full force of her magical prowess. This was their last duel of the year, and with no knowing what next year would hold, she was glad to see their hard work coming together.

The next round of the duel commenced. Nicholas hopped up to his feet again, able to rejoin the duel finally. Unfortunately, the Slytherins had no mercy for him. As soon as he was back up on his feet he had been hit with two Wind Jinxes simultaneously. One of them skimmed by his arm, only hitting him with half the force of a normal Wind Jinx, but the other hit him entirely. Amadea winced for him. The duel was brutal, but not over. She stayed quiet, letting the duellists take their time to strategize and cast.

She had not been going for a split, exactly. There was no need for it at this point, no second opponent for the spell to find. It seemed, nonetheless, that her focus on casting the spell successfully had extended to the blast of wind bifurcating; it may not have been her intention, but it was part of the Wind Jinx's potential just the same, no need for the double-targeting prowess of duellists like Dmitri and Phaedra.

Though effectively useless and even the possible reason for her spell only grazing Nicholas, the split was cause for excitement. This was her first time splitting a Wind Jinx in a duel and its occurrence was few and far between in practice. Seeing Santario achieve the feat had been no surprise--her magic emerging in powerful bursts was becoming much more common--but it was to see she, too, had done it.

Still, celebrating would have to be suspended a little longer. Nicholas, admirably, made his way back to his feet. Things didn't look particularly hopeful for him, his sneezing stopping just in time for him to be battered by wind. She knew what it was like to face two opponents by yourself. It wasn't much fun. That was not a duel she should have won, but there was something to be said for sticking with it. He had her respect for that.

When Bridget’s Wind Jinx split, Santario’s right brow arched. Both had done it, and she could not stop the smile from pulling up the corners of her lips. If anything at all proved all their hard work, this duel had been it. The misses between either of them no longer mattered, this was actual proof of their powers, and they had both been developing phenomenally. It made her heart race, and adrenaline flood her senses.

She hoped the people who had questioned her on why she was okay with duelling and why she loved it were watching because this was why. The practice, the advancement, the sheer thrill of watching your peers get better, whether they be yourself or your opponent. The proof that with hard work, nothing and no one could stand in your way ever again. It was intoxicating.



Santario gently reminded herself as air flooded her lungs from an exhaled breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. She wanted to shout and cheer on Bridget, but she remained as passive as she could. Nicholas was standing once more, and while it was true the odds were not in his favor, it did not mean he still could not change them and come out on top. First-year and new to duelling or not, he was not to be underestimated. Besides, luck was a fickle thing, and who knew when it would decide to root for the underdog.

Nicholas got to his feet, gritting his teeth all the while. His body was really starting to ache, and he was beginning to grow more and more frustrated at his inability to put up a decent fight. It was beginning to feel less like a duel and more like he was the unlucky test dummy to be used in the older girls' training. His eyes flared with frustration, anger at his impotence unhidden behind his brown irises. Still, he wasn't out of it yet, he still had a chance to at least bloody their noses before he was taken out.

The twin wind jinxes came his way and the boy prepared to dodge, only for one of them to split. Taken aback by the sudden change, he was forced to shift his movement to dodge the jinx. The result was less than stellar. The fist jinx, the one that hadn't split, hit him dead on, whilst the other skimmed his arm. He may have finally stopped sneezing, he may have been on his feet, but he didn't have any time to celebrate. The vortex had taken him, casting his spellcasting ability and talent asunder.

The wind bit at his skin, stinging his eyes and flesh. But pain gave way to anger, not even directed at his opponents, but at himself. He'd been outclassed at every moment. But no longer.

The duel was a blur of motion and force. Rising to his feet, Nicholas sent a Dancing Feet Spell crackling towards Santario, but the only dancing she did was whirling out of its path. She raised her wand alongside Bridget, both Slytherins taking aim at the same target, yet their casts would have shockingly different outcomes. Santario's slammed into the Gryffindor, not enough to knock him down again but undoubtedly leaving a mark. Bridget's, on the other hand, sprouted sideways from her wand. This unforeseen twist took Santario by surprise. She was hit on the hip, causing a painful jolt, likely eliciting a little limp once all was said and done. However, Nicholas had still taken damage. Despite facing down a second and third-year on his own, the first-year held his ground, leaving the audience on the edge of its seat while he hung on by a thread.

Part of the problem was how near the end felt. Bridget knew it was still important to focus--magic was volatile, requiring concentration to control--yet it was hard to treat the round as seriously as if their victory didn't appear guaranteed. Another factor was perhaps where she directed that remaining focus. With backfires in both her previous duels, she wanted to end that streak, to not finish the season on a sour note.

Evidently, it was not the cast itself she needed to pay attention to but where the spell went. The brief glance to the side, watching to see if Santario avoided Nicholas' spell, was where it started to go wrong. No longer perfectly square to her target, the slight fumble at the end of a wand movement she'd practiced hundreds of times sent the Flipendo nowhere near her opponent. No, it headed straight for her partner.

"Santario!" she called, a hasty warning. Too late. The blue light didn't even look like it had ever been intended for Nicholas, like a spell that had simply gone wildly off course. "I'm so sorry!" Her face was a bright shade of red, embarrassment setting in. How had she failed so horribly? Just when it felt like she'd left the doubts of her first performance behind, when her and Santario were functioning like an experienced, powerful team, she'd let her down. The crowd might even think she'd aimed for her teammate on purpose.

She didn't really want to be up there anymore, so many eyes on her as she messed up so badly. Of course, she wasn't about to walk off the stage. That would only let Santario down more. Letting one thing get to her that much would be pathetic. And they were almost done, with this duel, this season. They would still win this, probably. Even if she was failing, Santario would strike true. To think just a minute ago she'd been riding the high of a split Ventus, all the moments of excitement shadowed by what had just happened.

Biting her lip, she forced herself to look back up at her opponent, to raise her head and adjust her grip on her wand. Nicholas was battered, largely thanks to Santario. They were almost done. Maybe she could still finish with a hit on someone other than her own teammate.
