2021, Stage 3 Group B: Gryffindor vs Slytherin Finished

Calanthe would have liked to credit her laser focus for the efficient sidestep of the first year’s well-cast Flipendo, but it was all luck as far as she was concerned. She was more interested in aiming her spell directly at the snake who targeted her. Incendio was a spell that Calanthe both loved and hated for its use in duels and its penchant for causing disaster everywhere else, respectively. She had recently been practicing the more powerful version and it paid off here, striking the first year’s robes and catching flame.

Any rising conviction in the Gryffindor was promptly stomped out by the sound of the snake’s shouts. Calanthe forced any regret out of her mind, but she deeply sympathized with the girl. She knew what it was like to be on the receiving end of a fire spell and it was never pretty. In fact, she was sure that the fire spell was a very popular one for duels, unlike the bubbles now blocking Katrina’s way. It was an odd choice, but Calanthe knew better than to misjudge a third year’s plans.

From the last round to this one there was quite a distinct change. While Katrina managed a successful spell in The Battle of the Bubbles, the rest of the duellers weren't having quite as grand of a time. Whether it was nerves, a funky wand, not enough concentration, Willow couldn't be sure, Calanthe's spell didn't even manage to happen. It fizzled out before it had a chance of hitting her opponent.

Meanwhile on the Slytherin side, Starlee broke out Willow's least favorite deadly spell. The Curse of the Bogies. It went off quite successfully! The aim seemed extremely true, but alas! Calanthe sidestepped the beam of ill wishes at the last second. Willow sighed in relief, she did not want to bear witness to that. Illowy tried to send off the Full Body-Bind Curse towards Katrina. While her spell was successful her aim was dreadful, so dreadful in fact that the spell burst off towards her very own teammate, Starlee! Luckily the shot was still far off and Starlee managed to dodge it.

Willow hoped there would be more hits next round, she knew how frustrating it could get to miss your target.

She was doing her best not to let the flames now spreading up her robes not to get to her, but that was rather hard to do. Both Illowy and Cash had said some words of encouragement, and Cash's shouting of Taylor Swift lyrics had managed to make the first year smirk, even while on fire. 'Shake it off... shake it off...' she repetitively said in her head. And shake it off she would try.

She decided to neglect the growing flames and instead cast the dreaded Curse of the Bogies at the recognizable Gryffindor girl. The girl quickly dodged it again, but it had been a close call. A few moments later, and the flames had subsided on her robes, the pain finally dissipating. She took a sigh of relief, and readied herself again, nodding at Illowy. Cash was right, she could do this. They could win. She just had to maintain her focus, like Illowy said.

Action: Doing as strategized.

As Katrina waved the bubbles from her face, she wondered what exactly Illowy's tactic was with the bubbles. It was an odd first move of a duel. Then again, it was smart, it forced Katrina to have to get rid of the bubbles instead of another offensive spell. She technically could cast through the bubbles, but they were distracting, disorienting, and overall just a nuisance. Quickly making up her mind, Katrina readied herself and cast the same spell again, "Ventus," Katrina's voice was quieter this time, but just as certain. The bubbles blew and faded away, leaving Katrina ready for her next move.

Katrina glanced over to see a sadly ineffective spell from Calanthe, that was alright, there was still plenty of time to win. Just as Katrina began to turn away she heard the incantation for Curse of the Bogies and saw the spell careening Calanthe's way. "Cal! Watch out!" Katrina put out a hand, wincing, expecting the spell to hit home, but her teammate was just able to dodge the incoming spell. A sigh of relief came from Katrina as she recentered.

The incantation of the Body-Bind Curse tore Katrina's attention away from casting, Illowy was pointing right at Katrina, but the aim went a little haywire and ended up going at her other opponent who was able to dodge it. Shaking her head from the confusion, Katrina reminded herself that time was ticking. She slid back on the mask of cool confidence and readied herself for her next move.

Calanthe was never known to be quick on her feet. Years spent hiking along the South Downs trained her for balance and endurance, not for jumping out of the way of traumatizing spells. Busy with disappointment over her failed cast of the fire spell, she almost missed the tell-tale sickly green light of the bogies curse hurtling towards her. With a narrow side-step and her partner’s call, Calanthe avoided the nasty spell that had taken her out of the first duel, and gave the lions a large handicap in her second.

With a heavy breath of relief, she looked towards her partner who was the target of the body-bind curse. Without the bubbles blocking her view, Kat looked ready to dodge the spell, but things went sideways for the caster - literally - as she turned it on her partner instead. It would have been a perfect opportunity for the lions had the younger girl not been successful in avoiding it.

Calanthe felt lucky that the snake’s two spells had missed their mark. She regrouped mentally and took aim once more.

There was finally some excitement happening on the field! Though it wasn't exactly a wondrous bought of excitement for one team. On the Slytherin side, they continued to struggle. With both of their spells missing again. Starlee had gone after Calanthe once more, but her Knockback Jinx fell short as the young Gryffindor fired one back at her. Calanthe's spell was powerful enough to knock Starlee back, and make it to where she didn't get back up again. (Of course she wasn't dead, just knocked out).

Illowy stuck with her tried and less than true target of going after Katrina. Her Wind Jinx, while it did go off successfully was easily dodged by the other girl, who subsequently was dealing with her own issues. She had aimed a Softening Charm at Illowy, but her wand didn't even go off. The spell fizzled out before it could become anything.

It was now two lions versus one snake! Who would reign supreme?

Katrina wasn’t able to keep track as well of what was going on this time. That tended to be how it went. The first few rounds she could keep track mostly of what everyone was doing, what status she assumed they were at, how many hits each, how close they were to KO—but then, inevitably, enough would start happening that she lost track of what was going on and ended up just sticking with whatever her initial tactic was. That was the point Katrina was currently at, just sticking with her tactic.

Two spells had no effect, either didn't cast right or missed the target, Katrina wasn't sure which. But then, Cal managed to cast a pretty great Knockback Jinx at Starlee, who seemed to not have the time to move away. Katrina felt a rush of confidence, that was a solid hit. They might actually win this! Then Katrina realized Starlee hadn’t gotten back up. Wait. Was that it? Did they already knock out one opponent? That was amazing! Well, horrible for Starlee, and Katrina felt a good deal of guilt for her, but still, they were halfway to winning.

Katrina cast her own spell, Spongify. It was an odd spell, one that she’d been hit by last time, extremely disorienting. But something was off, Katrina assumed she was too distracted, because the spell fizzled off with no effect. Darn. There was still time though, and Katrina felt pretty sure on her feet.

Twin beams of blue light sailed across the piste and this time, Calanthe was prepared. Stepping out of the way of the first year’s particularly powerful Flipendo, the Gryffindor returned it in kind, striking the snake and knocking her to the floor of their stage. It was a mild confidence boost after the failure of her second fire spell attempt, but the feeling soon morphed into one of bittersweet exhilaration as the first year showed no signs of rousing. I did it! My spells took her out! But she still felt bad for the girl.

With her attention on casting and evading, Calanthe had not paid attention to what was going on between Katrina and the older snake. It looked like neither of them had taken a hit, but Calanthe was happy that her partner was still in good condition.
