First Meeting
March 25, 2021
Today was the day.Cal and Ashley's creative writing club, the Writers Of Real Dexterity (or W.O.R.D for short), would finally be having a meeting. A sign-up sheet had been placed on a bulletin board in a key destination, and the young Gryffindor had been surprised at how many people were interested. They had secured the use of an empty classroom on the second floor, and decorated the doorframe with a hand-painted banner proclaiming: Welcome W.O.R.D. Members! An art-savvy dorm-mate of Ash's had showed them how to paint delicate flowers around the border, and Cal had drawn an inkwell and quill underneath the sprawling words. Against the robin's-egg-blue background, it looked pretty good, if Cal did say so herself.
There were a few desks pushed together on one side of the room, transformed into a table by the use of a festive cloth spread over them. Atop it sat a few bowls of crisps, a water pitcher and a stack of paper cups, and a veggie platter (The latter off of which Cal had already snuck a few carrot sticks, to her friend's chastisement). The remaining desks were arranged in a loose circle at the center of the room, one ofwhich held stacks of paper, a pile of notebooks with a note that read: Take one, inkpots, and two jars of pencils and quills. Calypso went through her mental checklist. "I think that's about it then," she said, turning to Ashley. Then the first person entered through the classroom doors.

Hey everyone! Welcome to our first meeting! I hope you have fun writing and inter-
acting with the club and one another. Once a few people have posted arriving at the meeting, I or Ashley Coulson will make a second post in which we start the proceedings and explain what we'll be doing. I think she's on holiday in a no-wifi zone for a few days, so it will most likely be me. If you are interested in our club but haven't joined yet, sign-ups are here, OOC club activity is here, and the record of our works (WIP) is here. Please join before posting in this thread. Ok, enough of me yammering. Bye!@Ashley Coulson - Co-leader

Private Interaction with W.O.R.D. Members
Amethyst was excited for her first meeting in W.O.R.D. She had never participated in a club before, so she was doubly excited.
After much searching, she finally found the classroom, which was labeled with a beautiful banner on the door that read, "Welcome W.O.R.D. Members!"
Inside the classroom there were two girls sitting down. One had long brown hair and brown eyes, and the other had long red hair with thick glasses. They must be the club leaders, Amethyst thought. She smiled, and looked around. There was a table with food and water on it, and she headed there first.
She grabbed some carrot sticks and celery - her two favourite vegetables - and then some crisps. She wasn't too thirsty, so she skipped the water that was also there, and went to another table that had notebooks, paper, and writing utensils.
Dang it! she thought. The notebooks reminded her that she had forgotten her own. There was a note that said she could take one, but she still felt guilty as she reached for a notebook, and then for a quill and some ink.
She decided to sit in an empty chair close to the club's leaders, and she began to munch on her snacks as she waited. She started to get bored, so she scribbled out a title page for her notebook.
W.O.R.D.
A creative writing club
she wrote. She smiled at her handiwork, and looked up to see there were more people there than she remembered.

First Meeting
Gabriella desperately wanted the spring term to end. It wasn't that she didn't like Hogwarts - on the contrary, her two terms at the school so far had been the best thing the twelve-year-old had ever experienced - but she needed to get home. She had vowed herself that she would tell her parents, in-person, about her problem during the Easter break, and the sooner that was over, the better. Besides, she might have a different experience in the Muggle world, especially if she turned on her night light and played music on her iPod as she went to sleep, two things she couldn't do at Hogwarts. Then the thoughts might not come, her conscience might not bug her, and she desperately needed a break from those things, especially after last night. Last night - the Owlery and the stars and the torture that comes with future.
You need to stop thinking of that stuff, said her conscience.
I know, replied Gabby. And it would help if you disappeared.
Gabriella had pondered this a lot. Everybody had a conscience, but most people's conscience lived at the very back of their mind and largely worked behind the scenes, pulling the right levers and turning the right cogs when it needed to. But not with Gabby, not any more. Gabby's conscience constantly lived at the forefront of her mind, telling her whenever she did something wrong, and the problem was, it was usually right. Yet the Ravenclaw frequently found herself engaging in conversations with her conscience, arguments, even. First sign of madness; talking to oneself, the conscience had helpfully reminded her the previous week. Gabriella had told it she did not appreciate its frequent interruptions, but that just ended up triggering it more and more.
Anyway, that would all be over soon, once she told her parents and had spoken some more with Atlas, and for now all she had to worry about was the W.O.R.D meeting and the Herbology assignment she had somehow managed to spill ink all over.
The W.O.R.D club, or Writers of Real Dexterity, as was its full name, was a club that Gabriella had signed up for on a whim a few weeks back as an attempt to get back into writing. Officially, the Ravenclaw wanted to be a writer when she was older. Officially, she already was one. Since coming to Hogwarts Gabriella had realised that painting was where her real talents lay, but she hadn't told anyone that yet - and you can still have a hobby, after all, her conscience had told her, and the Ravenclaw thought it was right.
When Gabby pushed open the classroom door, there were only three other students in there - two Ravenclaws she recognised, and a Gryffindor she didn't. "Hi," she said, cheerily, announcing her presence. "I'm Gabriella, uh - Gabby. Gabby Haworth." A stack of notebooks stood on a table, and the Ravenclaw took one before sitting down opposite one of the Ravenclaws - a girl around her own age with large round glasses and bright blue eyes. "Hi," she mumbled to the girl, opening the notebook and writing the date.
Writers Of Real Dexterity, she wrote, in a calligraphic font she had tried to learn. The Ravenclaw frowned; it didn't look good at all. She had forgotten she could only really do it when she copied off the template her aunt had given her for her birthday.
Oh well, said Gabriella's conscience. It's not like anyone else is going to see this. Gabriella groaned.
I was going to say that myself, stupid conscience.
Casually taking a carrot stick from the girl opposite her - she had read in some dodgy psychology magazine that performing minor acts of misconduct was a good way to make someone like you - she turned to the Gryffindor and the other Ravenclaw, presumably the club leaders, to see what to do next.Word count: 655

❖ moodboard ❖ WC: 348/200Interacting with the W.O.R.D. clubOh god. She was going to be so late. W.O.R.D. was the first club Anja had signed up for all year, having been busy with studies most of the time. However, books and writing were some of her greatest passions, and she wasn’t about to miss out on a club promoting them. She’d taken a nice new notebook out of her trunk, thinking that they might be doing some writing — as well as an ornate quill and her favourite blackish-green ink. She stuffed her things into a messenger bag and slung it over her shoulder, then ricocheted out of the door.
Anja rushed through the corridors of the castle, attempting to find her way to the classroom where the club was being held. Despite having been at Hogwarts for almost two terms, much to the haughty Slytherin’s despair, she still got lost. The incessantly moving main staircases didn’t help either, and she often found herself on the wrong side of a floor. Finally, she found the classroom where they were to meet. An egg shell-blue banner hung near the doorframe, which was thoroughly decorated. Before slinging open the door, she checked that everything was in place. Had her hair been disturbed? No. Are all her robes still in place? Yes. With a deep breath, she opened the door, ready to attend the first club meeting.
There were already four people in the room. Anja assumed two of them were the club leaders, and the others had taken seats in the loosely arranged circle. Two desks had been pushed together and covered with a table cloth. It was laden with notebooks, quills, pencils and some food. A sign on the table referred to the writing utensils, saying Take one!. Anja didn’t take any food, instead directly taking a seat. She nodded towards the three Ravenclaws and the Gryffindor, and took out her notebook. She turned it to the front page, and opening her pot of ink, she scratched ‘Writers Of Real Dexterity’ onto the snowy page, ready for notes and writings from the club.

She looked up to see that someone had sat directly beside her. She looked up at them and saw that they were a Ravenclaw. Amethyst knew her name, she just couldn't quite remember it.
"Hi," someone said. Amethyst snapped her head up, and saw that it was the girl who'd sat beside her. Amethyst smiled at her, and turned back to her notebook. She doodled on the first page, creating a beautiful design of flowers. She started humming a bit, and then looked up.
The stranger had taken one of Amethyst's carrot sticks! Amethyst turned her face into one of mock outrage, and through a hand over her heart in faked surprise. She grinned at the stranger, though.
Another student had entered the classroom by then. She took a seat, and nodded at everyone, then turned to her notebook. Amethyst returned to hers, and continued on the flower pattern. The page was, by then, blossoming with flowers. She drew vines connecting them, adding leaves and twists, and then her masterpiece was complete. Well, not quite complete. She would have to wait to colour it until tonight.
Amethyst looked at the student sitting down beside her, and decided to extend an olive branch. They both liked writing, they were both in Ravenclaw, and they both liked carrots. Okay, perhaps the last one was less relevant, but the first two were good.
"Hi, I'm Amethyst!" she said.

Ashley took a deep breath and shook out her limbs. Today was the first meeting of W.O.R.D, and she would be lying if she said that she wasn't nervous. Three members had already shown up, not counting herself and Calypso. Gabriella, Anja, and Amethyst. Ashley had barely slept the night before. She knew that co-leading a club wasn't going to be a big deal and that nothing terrible would happen, but she was still on edge about the whole thing. At least Calypso was there.
Ashley looked down at her feet. Several of the other members were already talking together, but Ashley said nothing. She knew she should. It was rude to just sit there silently. But her mouth wouldn't let her. Ashley opened her notebook scribbled random words with her pencil on a blank page.
You can do this. You can do this. You can do this, she chanted to herself. In her head, of course.
Ashley stood up to walk over to the other girls. And promptly knocked her heavy notebook right off her desk. She swore in her head and bent to pick up her notebook and the scattered papers that had escaped from it. Ashley looked around, her cheeks flaming, hoping no one had noticed. Which was stupid, because how could they not notice? The notebook weighed a lot, and it's thunk on the floor practically shook the room.
Ashley abandoned her quest to go interact with the other club members and sank down into her chair.

First Meeting
Reducio Hey everyone! So sorry, I got busy OOC and also with other things on the site, and completely forgot that we hadn't even started writing yet! Today is the day of the club's second IC meeting, but we really should finish (or at least start the prompts for) this one, so I figured we could do them simultaneously? Feel free to either use your OOC pieces as your character's work, come up with new ones, or not specify what they write. Let's continue! |
|
Alright, several people were already here, Cal figured she might as well start the meeting. A little nervously, she cleared her throat, taking a seat at one of the desks.
"Hello, everyone! Um, let's get started, shall we?" She received a few encouraging smiles.
"For W.O.R.D, we will be having one meeting a month, during which we write to three prompts. These prompts might be a photograph for you to describe creatively, a certain structure of poetry to try out, a sample of another writer's work to inspire you, or something else altogether. You never have to write to the prompt if you don't want to, they're just there to get you going. Another thing that is one hundred percent optional is sharing. You may read your work aloud, keep it to yourself, or even have me or Ash read it for you if you want. After each share we will be giving positive -and only positive- feedback. Don't hesitate to tell people what you liked about their writing! But please make sure that the focus stays on the author while you're giving feedback. So, instead of saying 'oh, that was cool, it reminded me of this one time that I etc.' you could say something like, 'I found your piece very relatable.' "
There were a few nods among the group.
"For another thing, please keep your writing appropriate and PG if you wish to share." She paused. Anything else? No, that was about it.
"Ok, so our first prompt will be haiku. You may have heard of this Japanese style of poetry. It's a good place to start I think. Traditionally, a haiku is about nature, but modern haiku can be about anything. It is composed of three lines. The first has five syllables, the second, seven, and the third five again. So an example would be, hmm." Cal thought for a moment.
"Spring is coming fast/Flowers bloom around my feet/The sun breaks through clouds. Got it? If you need help or have any questions feel free to ask me or Ashley. You all received notebooks and pencils, or brought some? Good. Ready, set, write!"
The group reached for their writing utensils, and began to work. Some whispered among themselves. Cal pulled out her own notebook, glanced over at Ash, head already bent over her scribbling, then put pencil to paper.
