Obscuro was the spell of this duel, it would seem as both AJ and Pericles turned their wands on each other and sent black cloths sailing in the other’s directions. As Santario had come to know him, Pericles was a very nimble boy and evaded AJ’s spell with ease. AJ would not be as lucky, but at little at least. Pericles’ spell would hit AJ, but it would not wrap around in the perfect spot. AJ would retain the upper half of his vision, the cloth comically wrapped around the lower half of his eyes and almost all of his nose. Thankfully, the bridge of the boy’s nose would stop the blindfold from touching his actual eyes. Santario could not imagine that to be the most comfortable of situations, but at least he could still see a little.

Dealla was not about to remain hindered by her own spell as she reached up to tear that black cloth from her eyes, casting it away. Unfortunately for her, Alec was not letting this opportunity slip away as the vibrant blue energy from his Flipendo slammed right into her shoulder, knocking it back. It wasn’t enough to knock Dealla down, but it was enough to show her that Alec meant business.

Alec's expression worked entirely as intended. It perplexed Pericles further, leading him to believe that the lion's initial decision not to cast was, in actuality, a power move. It earnestly encapsulated Gryffindor's reputation for boldness. At least, that was what the co-captain thought. He wouldn't have time to dwell, as soon another blindfold was soaring his way. This time, Pericles whirled elegantly out of its path (that nat 20 goodness), the hems of his robe flaring dramatically with the theatrical turn and step. He had been working on mastering that move during practice, something his partner had lightly ribbed him for during a spar against Callie and Thomas. Peri didn't mind. He was well aware of how thespian it appeared, but he was fond of the "fast flow step". The trick was recalling precisely where your target was, so that by the time one turned about, they could take accurate aim and retaliate.

AJ appeared intent on blindfolding him, so Pericles elected to return the favor. He started it.
In the wake of his cast, the eagle took a fraction of a second to consider his handiwork. A missed Incendio and a partially secured Obscuro.... The first could be accredited to his opponent's agility, but the second, he supposed, was simply sloppy application on his end. Fancy footwork had kept him safe, yet he may need to sacrifice some of those showy evasions if he was going to land a proper hit. Someone in the crowd evidently thought the same. "...hit the opponents, Pericles." On average, the din of the crowd was reduced to white noise, cheers and jeers melding together into an ignorable, unintelligible cacophony. That particular voice cut through it, if distantly. What followed caused a small curve at the corner of his mouth. Pericles didn't duel for recognition, nor attention, but there was something truly special about having someone in the crowd rooting for you. Emboldened, he took aim again, only to realize the opposite opponent was turning their wand on his partner.

"Wotchit-" blurted, hasty, a sharp word which did little to aid Dee in preparing for the Flipendo which struck just as she was wrestling off her blindfold. She was hit, but still on her feet. Narrow eyes flicked at Alec. Peri pursed his mouth in an expression all too "grown up" for a second-year, looking like he was about to give the Gryffindor a proper talking-to. Instead the aspen wand was readied, tone level as he called quickly to the side, "Only a hiccup. On to that strategy you suggested...."

As strategized.

There was a certain thrill as Alec his the practically defenseless girl with flipendo. He felt bad for her, it almost wasn't fair. Yet he was extremely lucky that the spell hadn't gone terribly. Usually his first few ended up being his worst. A little rusty, and it seemed easier to have motivation when you were the only one there standing. For the sake of not getting a beat down by spells. Simple to say it was not pretty. Alec took a deep breath as laid his wand and himself to rest for a moment. Letting his shoulders slump, an at ease posture. As he eyed the girl he'd hit with the spell before finding the eyes of her teammate.

It'd been hard to catch it all in the moment there, but he'd gotten a glimpse as the boy dodged AJ's spell. His foot work was surprising, respectable as well. Alec wondered how the ravenclaw would take it if Alec asked to be taught how. Not for the sake of duels no, Alec hadn't thought that far ahead. It just looked really cool.

Alec half dazed for a moment then caught the happenings of, well everything. AJ was... Hm... Half blindfolded? It was not good for Alec or him. But this had never happened so far in the duels he'd done. It was hard to hide a smile peaking through. Though it became easier as Alec realized he was being stared down for a moment. The girl's teammate looked like he had something to say. It didn't look like it was that good either. Alright, that meant that was a no on the fancy foot work. It felt as if it were one of the most disappointing moments of the duel so far. He'd feel better by the time he had something to top it. But if everything went according to plan he wouldn't.

Alec cast a small glance AJ's way, uncertain of what to tell him to help him out in this particular situation. Uncertain of everything, except the words “Good luck!” once again uttered out of his mouth. Directed at everybody. His wand was ready, AJ was semi-okay. They could do this.

Action: Doing whatever was sent by owl

The frustration was still hot in her throat, but then a familiar voice cut through the darkness, and she couldn't help the small smile tugging on the corner of her mouth. Ruka's first duel, in which she'd come to cheer for him, had been an absolute disaster, and apparently now he'd come to repay the favour. She just hoped this didn't mean this duel would go as badly as his. Either way, Dee forced out a breath, pushing herself back into action. She couldn't win blindfolded.

Pericles would probably have been the target of more friendly mockery for his theatricality from Dee's side - if she had actually been able to see it. As it was, she was too preoccupied with trying to restore her vision, and the feat was lost on her. Pity.

Dee's lips were pressed into a flat line as she reached up to pull away the blindfold, straining to listen for any hint of a spell coming her way. Three spells were cast, Pericles picking up the fraying edges of their strategy and attempting again what she had failed to do just now, but with the hum of the audience and the other duels around them, it was impossible to guess when or from which direction a spell would come. Peri's warning, too, came too late.

The Knockback Jinx hit her shoulder hard, almost sending her spinning, and she took a step back to keep from stumbling, finally managing to remove the blindfold. Light flooded in, and Dee blinked, taking in the new situation. She'd expected two spells to come her way, but whoever their second spell had been aimed at, it had missed.

Pericles, on the other hand, had managed to at least kind of blindfold AJ which meant that now, the scales had tilted slightly in their favour. Raising her wand sent a wave of pain through her shoulder, but she couldn't let that distract her now. Gritting her teeth, Dee forced a smile towards her partner, her eyes flickering towards where Ruka's voice had come from for just a split-second, but getting caught on a blue flag someone was waving before she could spot him. "Let's go." She'd look for him later.

Missed again. It never got less embarrassing. AJ wasn't sure if his opponent was just especially nimble (not to mention dramatic) or if he himself was just terrible. It seemed Pericles had the same idea as the young scotsman, and as he saw his own shot sail past he only had a split second to duck under the blindfold sent his way. He managed to avoid the full brunt of the spell, but he was sure he still looked pretty ridiculous. Well...at least he wasn't entirely blind. He readied his wand again, running a hand through his hair and taking a breath.

He wasn't off to a great start...

The tides of this duel remained reasonably even on both sides so far, and it was legitimately anyone's game right now. Alec would cast the dancing feet spell at Dealla, who would narrowly avoid the attack while both Ravenclaws aimed their wands at the Gryffindor captain. He seemed steeled and ready for the attack as two raging flames came his way. Dealla's Incendio Duo would strike true, whereas AJ would manage to dodge enough of Pericles' spell in time to mitigate some of his damage. However, his robes on his hip and opposite shoulder had caught with two small flames. They did not seem like they would last long, but damage would still be done by both of them if he or Alec didn't decide to do anything about it.

The eagles had designed a dilemma.
That blindfold wasn't entirely blinding, meaning it was less tempting to spend the time necessary for removing it. Yet it was just enough of an obstacle to hinder their opponent. With a short nod directed at Dee's prompt, Pericles raised his wand at the ready. She was free of the covering so leapt easily from the path of an incoming Tarentallegra. If anything, the backfired Obscuro had only served to aggravate her, which spelled trouble for those two across the way. Furious Dee could be a formidable menace. "Incendio" rolled off the Ravenclaw's tongue, a bolt of flame soaring across the stage in tandem to his partner's. Both struck, and now, poor AJ was both part blind and doubly on fire. Would he extinguish himself? Keep trying to dodge? Remove the accursed cloth? A dilemma if ever he had seen one. No matter his decision, the damage was done. That fateful aspen arched back again. Only this time, Peri paused, and for a split second- easily missed if one wasn't watching- the corner of his mouth quirked down at an uncertain angle. He dealt with his own dilemma: that of a twelve-year-old who has just blindfolded and set another student on fire.

No, no. Focus. Best not to dwell. They all knew what they were signing up for.
This was just another learning exercise.

As strategized.

Every time. It was every bloody time, every duel. He never caught a break. He wasn't sure why it was the case. His position as Captain was the most likely answer, a position that each and every day he felt less and less that he deserved. For whatever reason, his opponents seemed to want him taken out first, and what did he accomplish in response? Absolutely nothing.

He didn't even need to see the Ravens properly to feel the smug energy emanating from them. AJ was the type who could very rarely be angered, but he hated Incendio, he hated it as a spell. He hated how it seemed to be so prominent in the arsenal of his peers. He hated how they were happy to burn each other just to secure victory in these matches. He was well aware that he knew what he was getting into when he signed up to lead his team, but it upset him to no end that his fellow students seemed to become entirely different people when the chance of praise was dangled in front of them.

He gripped his wand tightly, his knuckles turning white as he hardly even noticed his burning clothes. He was fed up with the attitude of Duelists. but more than that he was fed up with the fact that he was inarguably the worst Dueling Captain in Hogwarts.

Dee didn't have any of Peri's flair when she dodged out of the way of Alec's spell, but that wasn't really necessary. There were no bonus points for being fancy, simple did the trick, and she'd never admit to secretly being jealous of his fancy footwork, no. It wasn't that she couldn't do it, she just chose not to, obviously. Right. Moving on.

Different from many of the fire-affine students at Hogwarts, Dee had only ever set someone on fire once: Astrea, in their previous duel. She hadn't regretted it, either, it had been her best move in the situation, faced with two opponents by herself while Pericles was looking for his wand, and she hadn't hesitated to work more fire into their strategies for this stage, either. It wasn't permanent, and it wasn't personal. Dee didn't hold a grudge against the people who had set her on fire before... well okay, that wasn't entirely true. She had held it against Adonis that he had kept setting her on fire during the Chess Combat event in summer, but that had been less about the spell or the flames, and more about her frustration from failing to evade. Easier to blame the opponent, always.

And so she had no qualms about using it in this duel, too. "Incendio." The cast was near perfect, her aim even more so. She hadn't expected AJ to come so close to evading either of them - both of them, really, with the blindfold half across his eyes. Her first instinct would have been to take it off, but that he had attempted to dodge the incoming spells instead showed he'd kept a cool head under pressure, a fact noted down, somewhere in the back of her mind.

At Ruka's words, drawing her attention from the audience, Dee snorted slightly. Of course he'd approve of her setting people on fire. Automatically, she searched for him again, sparing just a moment of attention - and then another, as she blinked, and squinted. That blob of blue with red hair, waving the flag that had caught her eye earlier... that was Ruka. A bright grin spreading on her face, eyes alight with amusement, she turned back to the duel, unwilling to divert her attention any longer. She couldn't afford the distraction, but she did hope his housemates wouldn't lynch him as a traitor.

Their move had been a success, and in her mind it was nothing more. Now on to the next step in this dance.

He was on fire. AJ was on fire. This alarmed Alec. Obviously, as it would any normal person. He'd gone to incendio quite a bit his last duel. But after getting a taste of it himself. He'd decided it was time to stay away. Incendio was not pleasant. Casting his own spell had gone down the drain, doing it the second he realized AJ was actually on fire. He might've had better aim if weren't for it.

Things would work out, he hoped. Alec readied his wand. Forgetting to say good luck.
