It had been about two weeks now since his appointment as Ravenclaw's Head of House, and Marcus Iwasaki was getting quite good at riddles. The tower being guarded by a door of riddles had been a frustrating development for the man, who had not regularly done logic puzzles in almost two decades. However, he was tackling the problem head-on. He had taken to carrying around a book of riddles everywhere he went these days, although usually disguising the front so no one knew the title. He was getting better with them the more he practiced - his mind was regaining its sharpness, while his body continued to rest and recuperate from the encounter at the end of August. This was a good pastime for him considering he was still adjusting to the numbness of his chest and neck. Not being able to feel the muscles there was disorienting for him, and without training to occupy his time, he focused himself on his new Head of House duties instead. And being able to easily access the common room was his top priority, of course.

Marcus entered the Great Hall as he had for the past couple weeks - with his nose in a book. He walked without fear, though, knowing that any lingering students would move out of his way out of pure instinct to avoid his intimidating form. When he finally reached the staff table, Marcus took a seat beside the familiar form of @Caradoc Browne.

"Good afternoon," Marcus greeted, only briefly raising his eyes to acknowledge his colleague. The two men were well-acquainted with each other, having spent some time over the summer in each other's company, in particular healing after the events of the hag encounter. They also had a kinship with the Slytherin Head of House - although each of their relationships with her was very different in nature - who had also been scarred during the trek into the dungeons. Although she was a common link between them, Marcus acknowledged that he was also drawn to Caradoc's bright nature even without Nora. Browne reminded him of a childhood friend. He was a good person to laugh with when things felt too serious.

Since being back at the castle, Marcus would often say hello and occasionally ask the Hufflepuff Head of House advice on things. Like paperwork. The paperwork in this job was ridiculous. And the children were... interesting. He was tempted to tell Browne about the "welcome party" a few Ravenclaws had thrown him, but he had a feeling the Hufflepuff's reaction would have been much different. And then there was the dress code. Before as caretaker, Marcus had enjoyed the luxury of leather jackets and jeans and relatively comfy muggle clothing. Now as a Head of House beside the normally brown-suited Caradoc Browne, he realized he had to step up his game. He was not quite ready to say goodbye to the comfort of his Henley t-shirts yet, but he had changed to wearing dress pants today. Dark dress pants with a dark long-sleeved Henley. The Ravenclaw Head of House was making progress.

Marcus finished reading one particularly interesting riddle, and a thought occurred to him. "Are you any good at riddles, Browne?" he wondered, lowering the book from his eye line as he turned to the man beside him with a small grin.
Marcus' Intimidation is in effect.
It is a sentiment that enters people's hearts when they are in your presence. They feel dis-ease when you are present, even if the interaction is casual or even friendly.

Caradoc's day couldn't have been any brighter. His trousers seemed to slip on this morning without any issues and no tea was spilled over any of his papers. The sun was out and Miss Hastings had long left his office when he woke up so there was no one to nag him in the morning. Breakfast had been delightful and didn't leave his stomach heavy for the remainder of the day. No, today seemed to be a day when all the smaller things in life aligned themselves to make a clean path to tread. Now, having taken a seat in his usual chair at the dining table, the Head of Hufflepuff would appear to happily stack food on his plate. As well as stuff his face to the point it would likely burst.

Dressed in his usual white jumper, Caradoc did not appear as dressed up as he sometimes would. There was a time and place for each level of outfit in his mind. Whenever he was called upon for official Hogwarts business, he'd don his usual brown suit. Jumper and shirts were for when he was left to his own devices for the remainder of the day. And his T-shirts were usually kept for when he was on private business. Though in summer he could be seen in all three depending on what the weather in Scotland permitted.

His head lifted to meet the gaze of his colleague taking a seat. The badger's face would smile with a stuffed face and powder crumbling from his cheeks after absorbing another Berliner. "Hm! Mwawcus." He acknowledged chuckling as he realised he might have been a bit too enthusiastic regarding the food this lunch. His eyes would linger a bit on the man's stature. There always was this... aura around him. And while Doc knew to trust the man, he could never shake that odd feeling surging through his body when he laid eyes on the Head of Ravenclaw. Swallowing the remaining food in his mouth, Caradoc cleared his throat. "How are you doing today? Seems today's been rather easy going on me. Though I'd better hold onto some wood when saying that out loud." He grinned as he swept back the fringe that covered his forehead.

A look of confusion snapped back to Marcus after stating his question. Curving one eyebrow and leaving a small smirk to play on his lips, Caradoc's eyes narrowed. "Did you get stuck in front of your door, buddy? I've heard it sometimes has a mind of its own. Makes the riddles harder for adults." Shrugging his shoulders he rearranged the leftover food on his plate, seemingly stacking it in various odd ways on top of each other. "Could only be rumours though, I never go in that part of the castle. But to answer your question... uhm... I may be good at some of them?"

He wasn't particularly sure of his case. While out of all three of his siblings he would bet on Cae and then him, he was at least satisfied with the thought that Cad would not be any wiser than him on this subject. He shifted his attention back to his fellow Head of House. "Why do you ask?"

The view of Caradoc with food stuffed in his mouth and a grin that offered Marcus a glimpse at the contents was (unfortunately) not an unfamiliar sight. The Ravenclaw Head of House hardly batted an eye as he took his seat and settled in at the staff table. Browne cleared his throat after a moment and began to exchange pleasantries.

"The day's treated me well so far. I finally got in some coffee beans I ordered at the start of term," Marcus revealed, glancing at the blond man just as he was pushing aside his fringe. Ah, hair care. The darker man briefly wondered if there was a lot of management that went into the Hufflepuff Head of House's hair routine, but he found the idea in itself boring and turned his attention back to his book of riddles.

Asking Browne if he was any good at them turned out to hit a little too close to home. If Marcus were an emoji, there would be a sweatdrop on the corner of his forehead. It was good that wasn't a thing, and he instead just let his grin falter a little bit. He knew the comment about getting stuck outside of his door was meant to be a joke, but it was a little too close to the truth for comfort. After all, he had not just picked up riddles for fun. They had become a necessary tool of survival for the man whose own office and sleeping quarters lay beyond his reach at times.

"You never go near the West Tower?" Marcus asked, slightly incredulous at the thought. He had never noticed that about Browne's movements before. Not that he was constantly paying attention to where he was, but he hadn't considered that perhaps he avoided certain areas of the castle. "Why not? Did you have a traumatic experience there in your youth? One too many tower detentions?" Marcus' tone mirrored the one Caradoc had moments ago regarding the door and riddles. "Not many Ravenclaw friends?"

@Caradoc Browne didn't seem sure of the answer he gave regarding the riddles - that he might be good at some of them. "Care for a little friendly wager?" Marcus asked, offering a small grin as he closed the riddle book and held it between them. "Since you're not confident in answering them - if you can find a riddle that stumps me - or even create a riddle that I can't figure out - you win a favor. If I figure it out in less than three minutes - or however long you determine - I win the favor." Marcus had not considered the dangerous offer of giving Browne an undetermined favor from him. It had just come to mind in the moment, and he had a healthy competitive side and wanted something more at stake behind his riddle solving.

"...Coffee beans?" Doc's lips whispered silently as his eyebrow quirked up with a curious twinkle in his eyes. The look of surprise further expanded into a range of fascinated and confused expressions as the Ravenclaw Head of House continued. He must have been really looking forward for his beans to find him this responsive at the table. "Not many indeed. My sister was in there and a few close friends like Artemis. It's the Gryffindors I used to avoid, given my brother was among their troupe." He remarked with an absent look at the food stuck on his fork.

Scratching the rim of his collar, Caradoc gave his colleague a long serious look. The man's offer was highly unusual, and he would rather expect himself to come up with such a ridiculous idea. "You're fishing for favours now?" His eyes narrowed to slits as he continued scanning Marcus for any signs of purpose behind his request. He wasn't feeling particularly confident in accepting such a challenge. Especially not one given by a guy that chose to poke him like that before stuffing his face with even one bite. If he hadn't known better, he would have almost asked if there was any urgency behind it. But that was too silly an idea by itself.

"S-suuuure... I guess?" Caradoc shrugged both shoulders before leaning back in his chair. He grabbed another bite without breaking eye-contact with his colleague. "I never was a man of wits." He smiled and nodded. "But fire away." His hand waved in the air as if giving a signal, yet all Marcus would see was Caradoc waiting patiently before taking another bite.
