The third duelling stage brought with it a by now familiar feeling of anticipation and adrenaline. A little less so with this duel than with the one she was participating in, but being the referee was exciting in its own way, watching the duel to ensure fairness, admiring the duellists' skills. In the last duel she had moderated, the team from Gryffindor had won an overwhelming victory. Would it be the same today?
She didn't know any of the duellists this time around, but @Raine Sage and @Lamik Fillestar were both third years and had emerged victorious from both of their previous duels, which didn't bode well for @Alexa Mackenzie and @Callista Lovis. Callista especially was a first year, and today would be her first duel. Next to a second year, facing two third years, she likely felt the pressure.
Still, it might be a fight worth watching. Last time, Dee had left impressed by Galton's ability to split spells in two. What new things would she see today?
Her voice rang clear, cutting through the chatter around. "Raine Sage and Lamik Fillestar of Gryffindor! Alexa MacKenzie and Callista Lovis for Hufflepuff! Please, step forward onto the stage." A little dramatic perhaps, but she was in the mood today. She let her gaze wander over all four approaching duellists, a sharp smile spreading on her face. "You should know this, but just as a reminder: Wands only, no physical attacks, no attacking your partner. Trust me, I won't hesitate to pull you from the duel if necessary. Do your best, but do it cleanly, yeah?"
A nod at all of them, then the prompt to take their places. And then, with a shower of blue sparks, Dee called: "Begin!"

The third and final duel of the season. The third and final victory of the season. Yes, Lamik had gained quite a bit of confidence after winning both previous duels, and while he tried not to show it, he was sure that they'd win this one too. It's not that he thought poorly of his opponents, of course. It's just that he had let himself fall a victim to the hot hand fallacy. He won all of the previous duels- surely he'd win this one too! As the boy climbed onto the stage, he gave his opponents a small wave and smile. Not really a get-ready-to-be-destroyed-peasants smile, but more of a its-so-cool-meeting-you-here-in-Paris-where-we-both-coincidentally-went-on-vacation-to-at-the-same-time smile. He then turned to his partner in crime, and with a slightly more mischievous look said: "Don't faint on me this time."

It was finally the third duel of the season. The final session where she and her teammate would be up against another group. The last time she would raise her wand against someone this year.
And Raine felt like crap and wanted to crawl into a hole. Twice she had let her partner down by succumbing to that blasted bogies curse. Twice she had failed to help him out before she passed out. Twice she had left him to fend for himself and duel their opponents alone. And he seemed to remember it as well.
Raine wilted internally at the words, even though she saw his mischievous smile and heard the joke in his words. She felt like crap that she was so weak. She felt like an idiot for not paying attention in Transfiguration in order to learn the spell that would have helped her in the last two duels. But she was prepared and ready now. She studied her butt off and finally learned how to cast the spell. She would be able to heal herself and support her partner if things went awry."Don't faint on me this time."
Smiling back at her partner, Raine gave the boy a light and playful shove. "I'm more prepared this time, Lammy. I don't intend to pass out this time around."
And she meant it. She would never forgive herself if she let Lamik down a third time.

Alexa stepped up onto the stage with her new partner. She glanced over at the other Hufflepuff and smiled. Then she stepped forward, closed her eyes for a moment in the silent prayer, and raised her wand. Calmly directing it at her opponent, she prepared to cast her first spell what would probably be her last duel.

Callista was starting to regret signing up for the Duelling Club, and it wasn't difficult to see why. Having always been quite timid and shy, it was a wonder she was stepping up on the stage at all.
She had studied each duel intently ever since having signed up, wondering which team she would be paired up against. She had taken notes on all the members of the duelling teams and what their strengths, weaknesses, and tactics seemed to be. And yet, she didn't feel ready. The reality was still that she was a first year with a second year, up against two third years who had won both of their previous duels. It was clear who was the underdog.
But she had signed up, and she had to follow through. At Dealla's call, Callista stepped up onto the stage with shaky legs, a pounding heart, and a tightly gripped wand. She was certain everyone could hear her heart beating.
As she glanced over at her partner, her brain went over all the strategies they had discussed and the pros and cons of Raine and Lamik. The twelve-year-old returned Alexa's smile shakily, her wide dark brown eyes reminiscent of a young doe's. Another shaky nod at Dealla's reminders, and with that, the last duelling stage of the school year and Callista's first duel, began.

Head tilted to one side, weight balanced over the balls of her feet, Dee watched the initial exchange of spells with bright eyes.
It seemed that the Gryffindors had identified @Callista Lovis as the weak link in the Hufflepuff's team, as both their wands were directed at the first year. The youngest one on the field, the only one among them who didn't have any duelling experience to show so far, it was a fair assumption. Honestly, Dee would have done the same thing.
But it seemed that the Hufflepuffs had been prepared for this, as Callista didn't even attempt to cast a spell right away, instead focusing on evading the two streaks of light flashing her way. She easily ducked out of the way of @Raine Sage's Knockback Jinx, but was not so lucky with the second one: @Lamik Fillestar's spell, the more powerful between the two, caught her hip and forced her a few steps backwards, stumbling.
While her partner was playing bait for the two older students, @Alexa Mackenzie was free to focus on offense. Her spell was expertly cast, flames flooding from the tip of her wand, but Lamik showed enough presence of mind to avoid the attack, narrowly sidestepping the jet of flames, which harmlessly rained down upon the ground.
A strong start for Gryffindor, Dee thought, her eyes narrowing, but the badgers seemed to be playing smart. A bit of luck, a good strategy, and they might make a decent opponent for the two Gryffindors.

"AH!" Lamik felt the heat emanating from the spell as he stepped to the side, not having expected to be aimed at with a flamethrower so soon in the match. The whole ordeal was far too close for comfort. Looking over at Callista, he suddenly went from extreme surprise to moderate relief. At least one of the spells shot at her had landed, though he wasn't sure which one (if not both).

Raine sucked her teeth and clicked her tongue as her spell missed her target. She didn't want to harm the young firstie, but she also didn't want to lose either. She was already starting this duel off on a bad note and not being helpful to her partner. Looking over at Lamik briefly, she would apologize for her lack of focus.
"Sorry, Lamik."
Internally, she knew that it wasn't entirely her fault. Callista was an artful dodger and managed to dodge her spell. But now Raine needed to focus and she was going to earn her place on this team. So far, she felt as if Lamik deserved someone else; someone stronger than her or at least more skilled at dodging than her. So she needed to focus and get her head in the game and prove to herself that she was a duelist just like her mother was.

After the first round, Alexa realized with a sick feeling in her stomach that they were not going to attack her… At least not yet. They were focused completely on her partner! She quickly remembered their strategizing from before the duel began, and once again raised her wand, desperately hoping her spell would not miss this time.
