A Book in Common Finished

Mia wandered into the low area of the lake, book in hand. The wind swept her hair out of her face and she say the true beauty of the land, sweeping across in one stroke. The lake was amazing too. It was just after supper, and so the lake glinted icily. She stepped back and sat down. She pulled her sweater tighter around herself. It really was cold. She turned and opened her book, and started reading. The pages kept whipping around, but Mia held the book tightly and determinedly, trying to finish it before it became dark. She hated it when it was dark because then she would have to cast Lumos, and she wasn't sure iif she was allowed to stay out here that late and definatly did not want for someone to notice her. That would be disastrous. The sun finally set and Mia stood up, and started walking back to the castle. Suddenly a burst of wind blew her cap off of her head. She ran back to fetch it. She ran, her arms swinging by her sides and finally found it near the tree where she had been reading. It was a small tree, so Mia climbed it hesitantly, making sure her robe did not get caught. She then located her hat and climbed back down. Now the sun was setting, and she looked at the horizon, admiring its beauty.

Ami, still sitting by the lake, and still reading, looked up. A girl's cap (a Slytherin, judging by the colors) had blown off her head, and it flew up into a tree. Of course, she didn't laugh, and of course, she didn't tease- that would've been extremely rude of her, and probably would've earned her a slap on the wrist from her mom.

For a minute, Ami sat there, debating if she should go help her. But then, when the girl had successfully gotten the cap and climbed down the tree, she seemed alright- a little ruffled, but still put together, like most Slytherins tended to be. Therefore, Ami went back to her book, steadfastly ignoring the other girl, and drawing her hunter's jacket tighter around her, balancing the book on her knees.

When a sudden gust of wind slammed the book shut, Ami decided that it was the same as Fate screaming, "Enough with the reading!" She shoved the book into her satchel, and slowly got to her feet, stiff from staying in one position for too long. It was getting late, so she'd have to start heading back to the castle sometime soon, in ten or fifteen minutes, depending on if she ran or not.

Mia gazed at the sunset and then noticed a tall-ish girl stand up, shoving her book into her satchel. The girl looked around, her auburn mane curly and unruly. She looked older than Mia, and had long fingers that she wrapped around her hunters jacket, pulling it close to her. Mia recognized the girl from somewhere else, maybe walking on London, and walked towards her, clutching her cap in her hand. When she neared the girl-a Hufflepuff now that she saw her-she stuck out her hand, a muggle custom.

"Hello, I'm Mia, Mia Alexander."

Mia smiled. Perhaps the girl would know her family, they were powerful after all, not to mention pureblood. More importantly, she was curious to know why the girl looked familiar. Maybe they had run into each other before, or she lived in NYC or London. Either way, she hoped that the girl was not prejudice against Slytherins. Many Hufflepuffs were, and that annoyed her greatly. Just because she was a Slytherin did not mean that she was rude or only focused on the person's blood. Her best friend at home was muggle, and that meant that she was exposed to different types of people, so she was more tolerant than others.

"What is your name?"

Oh geez, planned RPs scare me. I'll see how well I keep up, though- thank you for letting me stay. I desperately need the practice :sweatingbullets:

Ami squealed (internally, of course- daughters of important generals don't squeal, thanks) in delight at Mia's name. So simple, so beautiful, and oh, how she adored the last name Alexander! The 'x' sandwiched between the 'e' and the 'a', making a sharp yet soft sound... Just saying the name Alexander sent her into a tizzy. And when said with a British accent, too? There was nothing better.

"Mia Alexander," Ami repeated. "I'll be sure to remember it. I'm Ami- er, Ami Procoppio. Encantada, a pleasure to meet you." She flinched at her accidental use of Spanish (where on earth did that come from?), and covered it by lightly brushing her fingertips against Mia's palm, not actually shaking Mia's extended hand.

Her mother had instructed her to do this in these situations; "This type of handshake is what we did back in my day, when I would go over to America to see your father. It made me seem mature, and slightly haughty- like I actually knew what I was doing. If you respond to a handshake this way, people tend to think you're confident. Ami, just fake it till you make it- then come talk to me, once you make it, because there's a Range Rover I really want."

No problem. My pleasure!
"Mia Alexander, I'll be sure to remember it. I'm Ami- er, Ami Procoppio. Encantada, a pleasure to meet you."

The girl lightly brushed her fingertips against Mia's palm, not actually shaking Mia's extended hand. Mia was impressed. Her Spanish was lacking-her mother always complained-but she decided to use it, maybe she could practice with the girl.

"Un placer conocerte también"

If you don't know Spanish that means "A pleasure to meet you as well". Sorry if this alarmed you, I thought it would be fun to add this bit in.

Mia pronounced each syllable lightly, trying to pass for a Spanish speaker. She hoped the girl didn't notice. She decided to switch back to English to try to save face.

"I hope you'll excuse my disheveled apperance. It is quite windy out here, don't you think."

She paused and put her cap in her pocket. She then touched her hair self-conciously, smoothing it out. She could imagine that she looked quite a mess, mostly because of her recent activities-fetching her hat from the tree.

"May I accompany you on your walk back to the castle?"

Mia pointed towards the looming building.

"It is getting quite cold and talking to another person always makes the journey more pleasant."

"El gusto es mío," Ami said smoothly, glad to see she hadn't forgotten the minimal Spanish she learned at her dual-immersion school. It surprised her a little, that Mia knew Spanish, but it didn't shock her in the slightest. Spanish was, after all, an extremely common language, and she was glad she had at least something in common with this girl. She seemed like the type who would be able to sit and paint a masterpiece, then go out and cream someone at tennis- the Sinclair type.

Referencing We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Don't be ashamed if you don't get it, but you should read the book. The best plot twist ever.

"I hope you'll excuse my disheveled appearance. It is quite windy out here, don't you think?" Mia asked pleasantly, putting her cap away in her pocket, smoothing out her hair, although, in Ami's opinion, it was already picture-perfect. "A bit," Ami smiled. "Although not as bad as San Francisco during the winter. Or the politicians in Chicago."

"May I accompany you on your walk back to the castle? It is getting quite cold and talking to another person always makes the journey more pleasant." Ami inclined her head, nodding. "Of course, Miss Alexander. It would be an honor." She shifted her satchel to her other shoulder, and added, "I can carry your book, if you want."

Mae was walking down the stairs to the great lake she knew for sure she was absolutely late. She kept kicking herself over it, she had been recently owling Mia Alexander and had no clue what she looked like, and if she was even still at the lake at all. She was very worried about meeting her, and maybe there was probably someone else who had encountered her Mae knew it wasn't inevitable she had been waiting a long time and if there was, Mae didn't mind having the 3rd party company if anything it would be more of a comfort than a bother. If Mia happened to still be there Mae was going to feel extreme guilt for being late and then trying to talk to her would make her feel more bad. She was running past the grounds as fast as her little legs would carry her. As she got closer to the lake she spotted two figures one in a Hufflepuff coat and one in a Slytherin Coat. Mae didn't care if she had to chance it but then all of a sudden she screamed out halfway across the field "MIA, MIA ALEXANDER!!". If that wasn't her Mae was going to feel super embarrassed.

Ami : Yes I have read it! I know the plot twist is AMAZING! Simply one of the best days of my life! Mae: I did! Thank you so much!

"I can carry your book, if you want."

Ami glanced at her and Mia smiled.

"Thank you for offering. That is very gracious of you, but I am fine."

Mia clutched her book tighter. She was about to say something when she heard a voice in the distance.

"MIA, MIA ALEXANDER!!"

A little Ravenclaw girl screamed at Mia and ran towards her as fast as her legs could carry her. She looked like one of those cartoon characters in the TV shows like Tom and Jerry that Mia used to watch at Rachel's vacation house in the Hamptons when it was too warm to go outside. Her legs were almost spinning, and her arms were windmilling around.

"Mae?"-Mia looked at Ami, puzzled-"Sorry Ami, I was supposed to meet someone here half an hour ago. That's probably her."

Mia looked back over at the cartoon-like girl, racing towards her.

"MAE? IT'S ME!"

Mia shouted this at the girl, noticing how she was slowing down a bit.

"MAE! STOP THERE! I'LL MEET YOU WHERE YOU ARE!"

Mia turned back to Ami.

"Mind if we take a detour?"

*shrieks and screams because E. Lockhart is an evil genius that broke my heart ILY JOHNNY*

"Oh, you were supposed to meet someone?" Ami asked, crestfallen. "Boy, I definitely screwed up. So sorry for interrupting your meeting. Yeah, we can take a detour- detours are welcomed," Ami smiled. "Who were you supposed to meet? Her name is Mae?"

Ami, of course, felt absolutely terrible for intruding on these two girls' planned meeting, but decided it would also be incredibly rude if she just turned tail and left. She seemed to shrink down into her robes, falling behind Mia as they walked towards the Ravenclaw in the distance. Better for the Ravenclaw to see Mia first, as she was the one she was originally going to meet.

Ami glanced back at the setting sun, and also realized that it was nearly time for dinner. Maybe the three of them could dine in the Small Hall together, or at a smaller table in the Great Hall- Ami really needed some new friends, and maybe one of them would know where the kitchens were; being a vegan caused some dietary problems, and Ami had eaten nothing but fruits for the past few meals. Hopefully, either Mia or the rapidly approaching Ravenclaw would be able to help her out.

*dies from fangirling overdose*OMG I KNOW RIGHT!!!!!! Why are these types of websites filled with amazing likeminded people that are so much better than the people in real life, not to say that you are not real but...

"Thank you."

Mia walked towards Mae, at a good pace, Ami at her side. Mia was so lucky to find such a good friend by accident. She looked towards the sunset again, and noticed her belly rumbling. After debating the pros and cons Mia opened her mouth to speak.

"Once we meet up with Mae-again so sorry for the mess your in now-would you like to go to the Small Hall and dine? It's not really possible in the Great Hall, and I'm sure I can get permission from a teacher-the head of your house seems nice enough-to get some food and take it out there. Sometimes other Slytherins can be so dreadfully boring, especially when they have no manners, have inflated ego's, and prank everyone they meet. Honestly. So immature. "

Mia touched her hair again and turned to look at the girl.

"Or"-Mia's eyes twinkled-"We could take some food from the kitchen and bring it back out here. What's a friendship without a bit of mischief? "
