Foxtrot Fixings
"That doesn't make any sense." Her feet fumbled beneath her at Flashes statement, but they swiftly regained their order. "Why even make the rules if they have to be broken?" She asked, never in her life had she been told to break a rule after all her parents instilled the following of orders in her and her siblings at a very young age.@Flash Holmwood
However, these weren't the same rules she had been taught ever so diligently to follow, were they? Yes, they were different. They were the rules of dance, a form of art, a form of science. All of the greatest artists and scientist didn't become great because they followed the rules did they? No they did not, they broke every one of the so called rules and invented their very own. They did as they pleased within their medium.
Though Adlai did trust Flash and thus she decided she would follow his lead, after all what's the worst that could happen? "How do we break these rules in the first place?" The music in her head continued to play, keeping the basic beat she needed to follow the rules of this dance, of this dance that was not fully her own.

At Adlai's comment, a big grin plastered his face, likely the most genuinely happy that she had ever seen him. Breaking rules was something he had been encouraged to do since he was young, to have privilege was to have rules not apply to you. He of course was also a Slytherin, and Adlai a Hufflepuff. The truth was, she would likely be astonished at just how low he would be willing to go to get ahead. That was something he loved about Hufflepuffs, they always seemed to see the best in him, even if he didn't deserve it.
"You don't have to. It just makes it more fun." Enjoying the dance, Flash's words would be laced with a light, almost laughing lilt.
As she began to play along, the hand under her arm took a hold of her back as he swung her into an unplanned dip, just as quickly returning her to the steps. Whether she stumbled or stepped on his feet, he would take everything in stride and course correct as needed. After all, the point wasn't really to teach her how to dance, but to bring a smile to her face, whether she realized it or not. He wasn't one to put in half effort when there was something he wanted. The happier he made her, the better he would feel.

@Flash HolmwoodHe had smiled, well he grinned, but that was the closest thing to a real smile he had given her this entire interaction. She must have done something good for that to be his reaction to her fumbling confusion about the rules of waltzing and whether or not to break them and if she were to break them, how it would be done. She smiled right back at him.
Yes, she did do something good since it somehow lead to him dipping her which lead to her clinging on to him in fear of falling. Swiftly being brought back up to where both of her feet were on the ground she looked back up at him. Her face felt hot; the music in her head had somehow morphed into music that swirled in her heart.
Then came the panic. Yes, she knew this feeling. This had felt this way for him ever so long ago, it had budded in her chest when he had read her poetry in this very courtyard and grew with every smile and witty banter that was shared between them as time passed. This wasn't good though for he liked another. He liked Anastasia, the one who had taught her this very dance.
She thought she had gotten over this feeling during the period where she actively avoided him, she had told her new friend Mac that Flash was just a very close friend who she missed dearly. She only missed him though because she had hiding.
She hated this. She hated to hate this. It was all so complicated.
She wanted to crawl under one of the benches and hide, but at the same time she didn't want this to end. She wanted to stay and see his smile again, even as the butterflies in her stomach began to flutter around.

The dance was fun, but it seemed to him that he might have overstayed his welcome. Adlai's steps were becoming increasingly stuttered, and her face was getting hot. It must have been a bit too much exercise all at once. Slowly, he lessened the impact until they were once again doing slow and simple steps, and then he detached. The smile was still stuck to his face, feeling as if his goal had been reached with stellar success. Not only had she looked like she was enjoying herself, but he figured she wouldn't forget the steps to the foxtrot anytime soon.
What could he say, he loved being fawned over by people. He liked the way people talked to him when they thought of him as precious. The side-eyed looks he would get, being noticed and thought about. He wanted nothing more than to exist as a part of everybody. Be somebody. It was a weird feeling, still something he couldn't name. It didn't matter what it was anyway. He wasn't hurting anyone.
Finally letting go of her hand, Flash gave a half-bow, a fair way of saying he planned on departing.
"Thank you Adlai, I'm not feeling so gloomy anymore. You never fail to make me smile." And he was, indeed, still smiling. "Be seeing you."
With that he would go, having plenty of things that needed his attention. At least now he would feel so much more light-hearted while attending to them.
