Trial by Fear Main Story Event

Katrina allowed herself to be guided into the single line of participants, though she would have shied away from any physical contact, instead hurrying to get into the spot. She was on the end, with Henry at her other side. Honestly, she felt comfortable here, close enough to run away, but she wouldn't quite yet. Instead she channeled her anxious energy into steeled determination. They must have looked quite frightening from farther away. Twelve students carrying fire torches, what could go wrong?

Irony aside, Katrina never really stopped looking around. It wasn't frantic or obvious, but her eyes were almost always sweeping the crowd, the stage, the caretaker, and then… there was something out of view from the audience. Katrina bent her head to get a better look. Three large painted circles, each with something in the middle. Curious. The first had a wooden platform not unlike the one they stood on right at this very moment, the other had to chairs and a table, and the last had a tent with open fabric flapping in the breeze. It was nondescript enough that Katrina had troubles discerning what they were. Simply had to be the trials though, Katrina was certain of that. Only three? Seemed like a small amount for such a broadly advertised event.

As the sun began to set faster, a darkness grew over the crowd. Katrina only realized this as her gaze met the crowd again. She hadn't noticed it so much with the red blazed torch in her grip. As she had to squint more to tell apart faces in the crowd. The caretaker stepped out in front of the twelve in a very showman like way. He clasped his hands together and suddenly the Pitch was brought to life.

A light show. Very over the top if you'd ask Katrina. Torches with multicolored shifting flames sparked into existence. The stage they were on began to lower. The caretaker began to speak. At the torches swift lighting, Katrina hid a jolt of surprise, hand clenching tighter to the torch, jaw locking for a moment. The only person to notice would likely be Henry who seemed to have a way to notice those types of things Katrina was beginning to notice. At the lowering of the stage, Katrina mimicked Henry, unlocking her knees preparing for something that just didn't quite come. And her sensory overloaded mind struggled to pay attention to the caretakers important words. It all felt too 'Hunger Games' for Katrina to let go of a level of anxiousness though.

Trials about fire, unity, and fear. Concern laced Katrina's thoughts. Fire, well that was just a bad thing to her seeing as her parents perished in a house fire, and Anastasia attacking her with fire, and her robes catching on fire that one evening, and dueling, and school balls, and the enchanted roses and like… just about every Hogwarts event thus far. But thankfully, Katrina had overcome her fear of fire to the point that she could duel with it, but it was still not a comfortable topic for the pre-teen. Unity wasn't a bother for her either though. Katrina was mostly comfortable in a group, she'd rather not lead or simply follow, but something in between. Unless it was a dangerous situation, in which case, Katrina would be in charge of protecting… everyone. And lastly, fear. Katrina took a fleeting glance at the tent she'd spotted previously that was now in view of the spectators. They wouldn't just set up a boggart in there? Right? Besides, you didn't learn the Boggart Banishing spell until later and there was at least one first year here. In which case, Katrina didn't have a clue how the organizers of the event would include 'fear' as a trial.

Other notable comments from the explanation of the trial included a time limit, which would certainly complicate things Katrina was sure. And a slot to hold tokens in the torches, at which Katrina took a glace to her torch and spotted it. And lastly, that you could opt out if you were 'injured or no longer mentally fit to continue'. A layer of dubiousness rose up in Katrina. No longer mentally fit? Why would he say that?! But at least there was a way to opt out if it all went downhill too fast, not to mention they had a nurse on hand, which was also good.

Piérre and Henry went back and forth and Katrina let a quiet snort slip out. It was true though, wasn't it. Fire just seemed to be a staple of this school. Not to mention the first years learn how to make fire before they learn how to put it out. Which was just bad curriculum if you asked Katrina.

Several other people did the first trial before Katrina but she was too busy trying to come up with a way to solve it herself to give them much attention. Besides, there was a nurse on hand, it wasn't completely necessary to jump in immediately if someone caught on fire anyway. Besides, the last thing her competitive side wanted was to get kicked out of the Trials for interfering before they'd even begun.

At last Katrina approached the ring. She slid her torch in place, giving it one last look before approaching the edge of the circle. She drew her wand out of her pocket and readied herself. The instant her foot hit the ground, the table alighted with fire. Katrina visibly paused for a moment, memories getting the best of her. Help was right on the other side if something went wrong.

Katrina approached the table, half tempted to stick her hand in and leave. But then general common sense returned and Katrina raised her wand. She could just put out the flames with a common extinguishing spell, but she guessed it wouldn't be nearly that easy. Instead, Katrina smirked. She reach out and shoved the top of the table as hard as she could with her foot, intending on pushing it over.

If pushing table is successful
Katrina walked to the other side of the table and pulled the token away from the table with her foot and grabbed it with the sleeve of her shirt, ensuring she didn't burn herself on the assumed hot coin. Then, if the fire had gone out when she pushed the table over, she would simply exit the circle, otherwise she would raise her wand and cast "Extinguo" on the table and any lingering flames before exiting.

If pushing the table isn't successful
Katrina quietly groaned and sized up the token again, realizing she had a timer still ticking and only so long to do what she wanted to do. At first she wondering if she could just make the table breakdance with Tangellegra and just knock the token off that way, but that was a risky move and she didn't have too much longer to decide what she was going to do. Instead Katrina would clear her throat and cast "Wingardium Leviosa" In a stern and commanding way, intending to levitate the token off the table and as far as she could, hopefully out of the circle, before letting it drop into her hand with the sleeve pulled up.

Trial by Fear Main Story Event
Fear, fear was the impetus for this trial. More than that, fear was the very theme of the trial itself. Such an emotion coursed through Nicholas's veins, as the river coursed down the mountain, the unending waterfall of nervousness and the beginnings of a childlike terror threatening to never halt in their journey. As gravity guided the mighty current, it was inevitability that guided Nicholas's emotions toward their natural destination. As much as he tried to bask that feeling with rage, he could not deny that he was terrified of what was to come. Regardless of whatever plans the prefect and the caretaker had to preface it or explain it.

The blessing that came, in its warmth and assurance, was as much a shock to Nicholas's conscious mind as it was to his subconscious feelings. One of the older girls, a second year by the look of her, with hair that outshone her Gryffindor torch in just how red its hue was, approached him. Truthfully, his eyes had been struck straightforward when she approached, and the tap on his shoulder had taken him by surprise. His nerves causing him to act instinctively, the movement somewhere between a jump and recoil. The reaction itself was embarrassing, and the sheepishness was entirely present on the first year's face, he felt as if he'd been caught out. Swiftly, he summoned it back to his depths, but not before he was sure that many of the other students could have caught sight of it. The fear and the embarrassment.

In its place, he forced a determined grin, "Nicholas McCowan."

The name escaped his lips as an answer the older girl's introduction, and immediately he felt a fool. He head only recently joined the dueling team, and he'd entirely forgotten to figure out who his partner would be. What an underclassman he was, entirely failing in his duties. Still, he was glad that this girl, Rose, was his partner. She was obviously capable if she'd managed to be selected for the trial, and the fact that she'd taken the time out to ensure that he was coping was more than a good sign for her character. Perhaps he needn't worry about dueling after all.

She wished him luck before she returned to the boy with whom she was speaking with, the Slytherin who'd offered the smile earlier.

"You too," Was the only reply the first year could manage. But he did provide a small smile in response to the one the other boy sent him.

Not long after, the event would begin in earnest and the need for well-wishing and chatter would fade from Nicholas's mind. He took the stage with deliberate, nervous steps, not particularly caring as to where he stood nor who he stood next to. He did not know what was to come but he hoped that he would at least be able to perform satisfactorily in each. Were he to fail, he doubted he'd be able to cope. Those emotions meant he barely focused on the moving of the stage, raw anticipation only beginning to increase within his core as they lowered down to the pitch's level and were met by the lighting display. This was it, this was happening.

That confirmation caused a cascade of pride and joy, those feelings only expanded upon by the speech that Mr Paine delivered. When Nicholas heard his own name amongst the list of competitors, he could not hide the smile from his face, for a moment all the worry faded away. There was tangible proof of his success, his tenth place finish a glowing badge of honour that he intended to wear with pride. And that pride demanded that he succeed at the coming trials, the pressure he had placed upon himself that had faded for but a moment only began to grow in intensity as the reality of the trial set in. Three rings, three trials, fire, unity and fear.

With the introduction concluded, Nicholas made his way with the other competitors to the first trial. Unlike one of the older boys who appeared to all but race toward his position, Nicholas approached with the slow gait of someone still somewhat unsure of what was to come. He found his section with relative ease, and forced his torch into place, for the first time since he had grabbed the object allowing his clasped hand to relax.

The nervous jitters he felt he rolled out of his body, stretching his neck and his fingers as the caretaker explained the nature of the trial. They merely had to retrieve a token from the platform in the centre of the ring. Simple enough, wasn't it?

Nicholas did not go first, a few of the other students, including Rose entered the ring before him. And upon viewing such it became clear as to why the trial had earned its name as the trial of fire, for the token that was to be so easy to retrieve was doused in flames. Nicholas had to hand it to the organisers, the name was apt.

With the nature of the puzzle uncovered, it was now time for the boy to attempt to figure out how to solve it. Clearly, the most obvious solution would merely be the use of the Entinguo charm. But that was too obvious wasn't it? They all had the spell, and were they merely to cast a simple charm then it was hardly a trial, was it? Unless that was the test, and the organisers were trying to catch out those who overthought the trial? Sometimes the simplest solution is, in fact, the most logical. That could be it, no? But then again, maybe he was overthinking by even considering that option. Still... he had time to at least trial the extinguishing charm, and if the solution was so obvious then he would hardly feel a fool for trying it. Unless the incantation was ongoing? In which case it would merely re-alight itself upon the casting of the charm.

He sighed, somewhat audibly, the constant debate was getting him nowhere. With the competitor in front of him having made their attempt, Nicholas took his chance to enter the circle. The table burst aflame, and the token was lost to the fire.

His mind raced constantly, but he dared not think too much He had limited time after all.

He pointed his chestnut wand with the deliberate posture and poise of one concentrating upon their casting and exclaimed, "Flipendo!". His hope was to use the knock-back jinx to see the token be knocked off of the table. The memory of the class where he'd learned wizards used the spell to knock fire seeds off of their plants still fresh in his mind. It seemed his long hours in the classroom attempting to force himself to succeed in areas outside of his own natural aptitude may have rubbed off after all.

If Successful
The smile that Nicholas's mouth formed into was gigantic, the boy positively beaming at having figured out a solution to the puzzle. Where earlier he had moved as if apprehensive and with the stiffened posture to match, now the boy rushed toward the fallen token with youthful energy much closer to his age. He had actually done it! He hadn't thought it possible.

If Unsuccessful
Nicholas hissed through his teeth, disappointment plastered all over his face, he had hoped that the knock-back jinx would work but it seemed that was not the case at all. With the clock now ticking against him he had to think, and fast. Perhaps it was a simple matter of casting a simple extinguishing charm and the fear and trepidation at using it was all a ploy, but maybe there was an alternative method through which to retrieve the token. No matter what, he had to come up with a solution, and fast.

He clicked his tongue, angered at his own inability to think straight, and at the lack of time that was forcing him to act without properly thinking. He had to gamble, and hope that this was some lesson about using simple tools.

"Extinguo!" He cast the extinguishing charm with a more panicked voice than he'd otherwise intended, especially when compared to what he'd done with the knock-back jinx. Here was to hoping.

If Successful
Nicholas blinked as the fire went out, had it really been so simple? Hesitantly he approached the platform, and picked up the token, running it over in his hand. The joy of success mixed slightly with irritation at how he had almost screwed himself out of the prize by overthinking. He sighed before allowing the smile to form on his lips, a small one. At least he'd had some success.

If Unsuccessful
Frustration and disappointment threatened to rip Nicholas apart, he had failed at the very first trial of the night. What was that to say about his chances of success in the other two? His darkened mood got only blacker at his lack of success, and he all but sulked back to his torch, daring not to speak to anyone lest he lash out.

He ran over the scenario again and again in his head, how had he been mistaken? His eyes were as aflame as the platform had been, incensed at his failure.

Trial by Fear Main Story Event
Alexander folded his hands behind his backs, watching as the new Hogwarts caretaker @Kit Paine and the enigmatic@ Thomas Lestrange. Both seeming to have at least a certain interest in the dramatic, what with the speech and all these trials. This was especially made clear as the first trial presented itself. What seemed to be a fiery platform.

As he saw it, Alex small smile transformed into an amused grin. It seemed Lestrange and Paine had an odd choice in trial selection. Since quite a few of the senior Hogwarts students did not have too positive thoughts of fire. Thought once again a wince got on Alex's face as he thought of the Moth he himself had set on fire, but then he brushed off the thought. Instead he looked at the various students all trying their own best at beating the trial that had presented itself before them.

Some of them were interesting ideas, whilst others were simple but practical. But there were none yet that had gone for a true flair of the dramatics. And Alexander could not deny, he did love some dramatic actions. On top of the fact that this was a time to experiment. This was not a real time that their life was in danger, so it was better to experiment with weird stuff right now rather than at a later date. Thus, whilst staring at the burning platform an idea came to mind. Well, in fact two ideas came to mind, but hopefully the second would not have to be implemented. It was far less creative and interesting than the first option he had in mind.

Before he could start with his own trial though, he heard a shout coming in the distance from @Ileen Knight about sacrificing someone to a fire god. He could not make out a lot more, but his concentrated frown did return to a small smile as his dueling partner shouted encouragement. Brimming with enthusiasm and support.

Though the concentrated frown returned as the time came for him to make way to the dueling platform as well. Standing in front of it, he slowly breathed in and out. Making sure that he was calm, because he could not lose his nerve if what he wanted to do was going to succeed. Thus he drew his wand, feeling it firmly in his hand. Pointing it at the token in the middle of the platform Then spoke in an even tone "Avifors"
If Avifors sucseeds
Alexander's frown remained, though he allowed himself a small curling up of the lips.
It seems the first part of his plan had succeeded, now it was time to finish it off. Thus Alexander aimed his wand at the bird/token that was now flying away from the pyre at the center of the quidditch pitch. Letting out a puff of air Alex did his second incantation.

"Reparifarge"
If Avifors does not succeed
Alexander gritted his teeth. It seemed that the initial success he had hoped for had not manifested itself. Instead the token remained there in the fire, infuriatingly inanimate. But if he could not go for a full dramatic showing, that was fine. He had other ways of achieving his goals in a creative way, thus he pointed the top of the wand at one end of the platform. He did not know if this would work, but he supposed it was worth a try. Then he muttered. "Wingardium Leviosa."

Elena raised an eyebrow as it was announced they were to be partaking in a supposed trial by fear. If that was supposed to make her eager or amped for what was to come, it was doing quite the opposite exactly as this didn't sound like any sort of reward the brunette wanted to be part of in any way. She could take comfort in the fact however there were numerous amounts of Gryffindors here and for a house rooted in courage and heroisim, it seemed like the perfect test really so maybe she was lucky in that regard. The girl took in the rules and infromation that were being professed upon them at lightning speed as it seemed everyone was more keen to get to the action but it was simple enough. Complete the trial, get a token, don't get injured. Easier said than done, she thought to herself as they assembled to get to the location of their first trial and as Elena drew closer, the flames shot up rendering it nearly impossible to get near the token without being burnt alive first.

Of course, it couldn't be as easy as that. "Two minutes, huh." She muttered to herself shooting a glance to see what the others were doing. It wasn't the fact that it was hard, it would take some very basic magic to get past this but she was suspicous that it seemed so simple. It was only the first trial but still, Elena had her reservations as she pulled out her wand. "Extinguo!" She would mutter in an attempt to snuff out the flames wondering what on earth this token was made of. It was probably some hard or tough material if it was able to withstand being lit on fire and still be in one piece though she didn't pay it any mind. The clock was ticking and as far as the third year was concerned, she was well under the two minute time limit that had been sit as she waved her wand flicking it at the token. "Accio token!" After extinguishing the flames, a quickly cast Summoning Charm would hopefully send the token zooming towards the Gryffindor girl into her outstreched hand waiting in anticapation. It was some very basic magic and if someone couldn't get past this, she very much doubted they would be prepared for what lay next.

The girl was curious what role the tokens would play in all of this. It was clear they had a very important role but as for what end goal they had, Elena had either failed to grasp that or it had not been mentioned. Nevertheless, she was aiming to get as many as she could without falling victim to whatever horrible or dark things the staff had planned for them. Elena was still wondering who had thought this was a good idea to put some students through knowing full well what had happened with recent events at Hogwarts, it was an odd idea for sure but as long as she came out of it in one piece and hopefully not any more stressed or traumatized, Elena would consider it a win-win. After all, they were just collecting tokens, it wasn't like Hogwarts had sent them off to capture a dragon or something though she suspected there were a few students who would in their foolishness gladly jump at that chance if it ever came to light. One token down, Merlin knew how many more there were to go.

A frown would accumulate, as she spied familiar figures whilst surveying the stands. From where Xailah was standing, the figures appeared as mere blobs- familiar blobs. Her brow creased, frown deepening. She could recognize her associates even if they were a few hundred feet in the air, and in their most blobular of forms. The Gryffindor ran a hand through her dark mane, signaling of some sort of stress. If she hadn't been holding a torch- which was basically a huge sign that screamed her location- she might have tried to slip out of sight. Seeing that hiding was not much of an option, she could only hope that the stadium would become dark enough to prevent the clear identification of the contestants. Stiffly, she looked away from the stands, resuming a phlegmatic position.

A few minutes would tick along, allowing time for the last few contestants to find their way to the pitch. During this time, the sun sunk below to rest, taking light with it. The colored torches carried by the participants, painted parts of the stadium in multicolored luminescence. It was an eerie sight to see- for the few minutes it lasted. When the participants took their places atop a stage, more lights and torches would accompany the ones held. The hosts really wanted to make sure everyone could see the students die play. Play. Play? Was that right? Participate might have been a better word. No one was playing- except for maybe the ones who organized the event. What if this was a very elaborate- not to mention belated- April fools prank? That would be rather cruel, wouldn't it?

Xailah disliked the amount of fire that was appearing inside the pitch. Fire and enclosures never made a good match unfortunately. Surely the flames were enchanted though. Right? Eh. One could only hope. There would be little surprise if they weren't. The Gryffindor wouldn't hear much of what the organizers had to announce. Giving children torches to hold was a poor choice- the colored flames were far too distracting, which was proven by Xailahs "not there" expression. Pretty colors were much more interesting than whatever else was going on. She did catch some snippets of what was being said- mostly bits about what not to do, and something about fire, unity, and fear. Fire. Unity. Fear. She hung on those last three words, pondering what they meant to her. Not much, she would conclude. Not much...

Unity though- that word scared her. Jostled her into a more conscious state of mind. It implied that there would be a need to work with her peers. Yeah no. She didn't like that implication. Not one bit. Whenever something was to go wrong, ones peers were the scariest things to be around. Did fire and fear, stab? No. Kidnap? Brutalize? Betray? No, no, and no. Xailah flicked her fingers, vexedly. The slender, metal tips clinked each time they met another. The clicks came to a halt, once the trial actually began. The participants shifted, following after one of the two organizers. The students would be lead to a separate stage, one that only allowed a few to enter at a time.

Xailahs turn would come up fairly quickly. She would seek a place to set her torch down, before stepping onto the stage. Fire greeted her immediately. Ah. Just what was needed. More fire. The torches and "clap on, clap off" lighting display wasn't enough, was it? Of course not. They needed a burning table too! Xailah took a step closer to the smoldering platform, seemingly entranced by the dancing tendrils of heat. Crimson light touched her flesh. Her milky complexion drank the color, eagerly taking in its foreboding warmth. Directive would be given. Xailah nodded, silently considering the goal. Retrieve token from the fire. Cool. Got it. So this was the first trial? Seemed simple enough. No time to mull over it. Do something.

Action One:

Extinguo, or Accio appeared to be the most obvious solution to this puzzle. However there was a small problem with both spells. Accio required clear visualization of an object in order for said object to be summoned. Xailah had not gotten a good look at the coin before the table ignited. So, while the spell was appealing, there was doubt that it could be pulled off in under a minute. As far as Extinguo went, the spell was simply... well, simple. It was the most probable solution to the puzzle, considering the spell was taught in first year- and for good reason- meaning anyone could cast it. It was an effective thing if done right, but plain boring all the same. Besides, the goal was to get the token. Putting out the fire beforehand may have been implied- might be necessary in order to reach the goal. -But if a one had the ability to take the token without dousing the fire, why not go for that approach? Xailah believed that some fires were not meant to be put out. Had the several that started in the forbidden forest been left to burn, this series of trials never would have needed to take place.

Xailah was something of a talent, when it came to transfiguration- being a metamorphmagus and all. Not to brag or anything- it was just the truth. Learning spells from the class came easy to her, as did casting them. Now, Transfiguration might have been the most useless branch of magic... ever. Who really needed to know how to turn a snail into a teapot? No one, thats who. If one thing was certain though, it was that Transfiguration (while a bit pointless at times) was hands-down the coolest branch of magic. Yeah, there is no point in having a snail-teapot, but at least its neat. It gets points for creativity. Now, to be absolutely fair, Transfiguration did have its share of pretty useful spells. Xailah had a specific one in mind- one often used for card tricks, but particularly handy in the instance where help was needed in performing quick sleight of hand. Viceversus. There was one downside to the spell- it required an equal exchange. The submission of one object for the chance to obtain another. Most transfiguration spells required an exchange. The metamorph touched her side in search of something token-sized that could be switched. Her mouth quirked when she found she had nothing of use. Eyes were cast towards the ground.

An idea fell into place, once her gaze skimmed over the dark grass that surrounded the area where she stood. Xailah would momentarily step off the stage, to gain access to a spot on the ground that was not occupied by wooden platforms. Pressing her fingers into the firmed earth below, she would free a patch of turf. It wasn't very big, just roughly the size of a poker chip. It was all that was needed. Hopping back onto the stage, she would then hold her wand out in front of her. A step would be taken towards the burning table. She approached the surface until she could feel the heat from the flames that enveloped it. "Viceversus!"

Should Action One Fail:

That was utterly disappointing. Good thing Xailah had a plan B in mind. If the token wasn't going to come to her, then she was just going to have to waltz in and get it. The spectators were here for a show after all. Why not give them one? Xailah surprisingly didn't have much of an aversion towards fire- unless the fire was in a tight space. She avoided it when she could, because a primitive part of her brain told her to, but she wasn't actually afraid of it. When you've watched your school go up in flames six times over the course of four years, you eventually begin to learn things about the element. You also tend to grow numb towards it. There were a few important things to note about fire, an important one being: it didn't burn you unless you allowed it to. A second was: you couldn't run from it. For anyone not riding the same wavelength as Xailah, they were pointless things to keep record of. For those who did surf the same wave, then they would understand the importance of recalling such things.

This was clearly no candle wick. A speedy finger couldn't pass through the flames, and exit unsinged. However with the right knowledge, a body possibly could. But who in their right mind would go into the fire? ...Who in their right mind would have a real fire, at a staff sanctioned event? Hm. Thomas maybe. He seemed like a "burn the children" type. Would it be easier to Extinguo the fire, and get trial one done and over with? Absolutely. Safer? Certainly. Was it clever? ...No not really. Just blatantly obvious. There was no real way to tell if the fire burning before Xailah was a real fire anyways. Smelt like fire. Felt like fire. Looked the part too- but so did enchanted flames, ones that could not burn organics. It was something of a Schrödinger's Cat situation. Schrödinger's Fire. No one could tell if it was real unless they went into it, and burned to death. The trials were meant to imitate the threats that were to be faced- were they not? Therefore the possibility of deception was not an unreasonable thing to consider.

The lioness turned, taking a step back as if she was about to leave the stage. Upon reaching the edge, she would turn swiftly so she could face the burning platform once again. She took a moment to squint through the fire, searching for the rounded shape of the token. With the shadow of the coin in her sights she would slip her goggles over her eyes, and break into a sprint. The soles of her shoes tapped the wooded boards, touching each with just enough force to continue her dash. Xailah would not stop once she reached the tables edge, she would instead use the overhang to lift herself onto the blazing exterior. From there she would somersault across the top- only pausing long enough to grab the token- until she reached the other end of the table, where she would allow herself to tumble off. So- what was the purpose of rolling? Wouldn't it have just been simpler to run across the table? Not necessarily. See, fire needs oxygen to keep burning. Running would essentially fan the flames. You run, you burn, you die. Rolling chokes any clingy flames- basically snuffing them. Oxygen cannot get in-between a person, and the surface they are tumbling on. That is why when going through a fire drill, you are told to stop, drop, and roll. Not stop, drop, and run. If this fire was real- in the sense it burned flesh- then the rolling would theoretically put the lioness out if she did happen to burst into a ball of flame. She was going to have to be fast though. Even if the fire didn't burn flesh, Xailah didn't want to end up like Meenauh during that campfire event last summer.

Dee returned Aida's offered hug easily, although a little distractedly, a fond smile on her face before she turned to watch the rest of the participants, the ones arriving and the ones already there, while pointedly ignoring Thomas Lestrange's presence.

There were a few faces she associated primarily with Duelling, one girl she'd seen around the Headliner office - Scarlett, was it? That head of red hair stood out - and then a more familiar face showed up, heading towards Aida and herself. Alan was someone she'd consider a friend at this point, although not a particularly close one. They'd bonded over cats, decorated Madam Puddifoot's tea store together, and made dango in a recent errand. He'd also tried and failed to attack her in an ice hockey game in winter, but while she definitely held grudges from that game, Alan had somehow escaped this fate.

He was included in her bright smile, and Dee was nearly bouncing at this point, the excitement of the situation drumming in her veins, leaving her feeling slightly wild, untethered. His question received a slightly amused expression. "Rather obvious, but yes. The announcement was very vague, wasn't it?"

The Ravenclaw's eyes were drawn again by the new arrivals, scoping out the competition, perhaps, although not in any focused way. Yet. She'd see soon enough who the real competitors were going to be. Alexander was the next to head over to their little group, although likely only due to Aida's presence. Dee didn't think the two of them had ever had a private conversation, in her mind, he mostly existed in association with their common friend. And with Ileen, slightly, as they were duelling partners, but when she thought of Alexander, she thought of Aida.

The same was likely true in reverse as well, and Dee gave him a slightly distracted smile in response to his greeting. "Yeah, I don't think we've talked at all? Although I did see you in your duels with Ileen! You were doing well." At least in the first one, not that Dee was in any position to judge. Taking the effort to focus her attention on the Slytherin for a moment, her smile took a clearer, more consistent shape. "I'm good, yes! Although it has been a rather busy year." Duelling captain, Headliner, Fall Ball, now prefect. Busy indeed. Usually she might have taken the opportunity to brag, but everything that had happened in autumn was old news to her, and her appointment as prefect was so recent it got drowned out in the excitement of the situation, not yet part of her identity. She wasn't wearing any of her badges, either.

The next arrival was slightly familiar, although it took Dee a second to place her. She had met Elena on AJ's birthday in November, and she'd seemed nice enough to earn a wave in return for the general greeting now. Another red-headed Gryffindor arrived - truly, there seemed to be a ridiculous number of those to go around - and Dee's eyes flitted across the stage, counting. Was this all of them, then?

It seemed so, and Dee was in the process of turning towards the caretaker - not the prefect next to him, obviously - for further information, when a shout from the audience drew her attention instead. She recognised the voice before she even turned around, and it drew a surprised bubble of laughter from her chest, out of place with how tense everyone around them seemed. Her eyes found Ileen in the audience, and her grin widened. "Got it!" she called back. "Will crush anyone in our way!" She really didn't know what to expect yet. Fighting each other didn't seem like the right thing for something called "Trial by Fear". Would this be a competition at all?

Spotting Kazuo not far from her friend, Dee's eyebrows rose in surprise - that seemed too close to be safe, honestly, considering how much Ileen disliked the Hufflepuff - but then she just grinned and gave him a cheerful wave as well. They'd make it through the night without either of them falling off the stands. Probably.

Then, finally, they got some further instruction on what they were supposed to do. By Mr Paine, thankfully, so she could cheerfully go on ignoring a certain other, rather unimportant side character. Quickly taking her place in line, she executed a small, ironic bow in direction of the audience, then unwillingly turned her head to watch as Thomas Lestrange started explaining some of what lay ahead. With every word, she could feel the competition rising inside her, setting her tense like a coiled spring, anticipatory, drowning out the audience. So it was a competition, of sorts, although it would keep the challenges separate, measuring success by tokens, not by beating other contestants. No questions from her side.

The first task seemed deceptively simple, torch quickly deposited, and it was only when stepping into the circle, the table bursting into flames, that the challenge became clear. Dee paused for a moment, tilting her head to one side. There it was already, the fire. Good thing she'd tied her hair back, although this shouldn't require her to get close enough to be singed. Was there anyone here, she wondered, who was really afraid of fire? In that case, they might have a tough time at Hogwarts.

Narrowing her eyes, she considered her options. The Extinguishing Charm seemed too obvious - what would keep the table from bursting right back into flames? And even if it worked, it seemed too simple. Ileen's suggestions, yelled from the edge of her perception, drew a snort, but no glance. Indeed, why hadn't she taught her that neat summoning trick she'd used during the blizzard errand? That might come in handy here. And while she'd happily follow the second part of Ileen's advice if she thought it would gain her any advantage, she assumed sacrificing Henry might count as interfering with him.

Eyes narrowed, Dee stepped carefully closer to the fire, close enough to feel the waves of heat against her skin. Although, perhaps the token was charmed to withstand spells like Accio anyway - but then, she couldn't know, and didn't have the time to spare to figure it out.

Summoning aside, she was able to make things float towards her. Levitation just required a little better aim, so this would be her first attempt. If that didn't work, she'd still have a bit of time left to try something else - but only if she acted now.

Her wand slipped easily into her hand, smooth and familiar and just as stubborn as she was. She hoped that today, what they wanted would align. As close now to the table as she dared - not quite close enough to singe the tip of her nose - Dee raised her wand, eyes focusing on what was visible of the token through the flames. "Wingardium Leviosa," she muttered.
If she manages to levitate the token
A smug smile on her face, Dee directed the token away from the fire, then let it drop to the ground half a meter next to her. Crouching down to inspect it, she covered her fingers with her sleeve to pick it up, in case it was hot from the fire. Straightening up, Dee headed back to the edge of the circle, self-satisfied as a cat and no glance back, her ponytail swinging.
If she does not manage to levitate the token
Dee made a face at the token, as if its unwillingness to move was a personal insult to her, and immediately abandoned the failed attempt. Well, if that didn't work, it stood to reason that any other attempts to summon or push it would also have a hard time succeeding. Maybe time for a more blunt approach, then. Knock the table over properly, send the token flying.

Taking two steps back, she assumed what closely resembled a duelling stance - more due to habit than a conscious decision. It was, after all, the context she usually used this spell in. But then she hesitated, and crouched down instead, getting a better angle, aiming for the underside of the table. After all, she didn't just want to push the platform to the side a little, she wanted to knock it over with enough force to get the token away from it. "Flipendo!" she called, eyes determined.

Scarlett rolled her eyes. Though the answer she got was not necessarily rude, it was blunt and her curiousity rocketed to new height whilst her patience remained rather thin. However, Scarlett soon received a proper answer. The caretaker guy ordered them in a line and Scarlett quickly scrambled over to Rose and Henry, facing the audience with her torch and addressing a quick, "Hi." to her friends. The caretaker guy started a very fancy light show and Scarlett muttered, "Flashy, isn't it?"

They soon found themselves descending down to pitch level with a few added bonuses along the way, such as more torches and a big bonfire that - when it was lit when the stage reached the pitch's level - showed three painted circles on the ground. And then there was the typical opening speech. It was all very showy and dramatic, and Scarlett did not mind one bit. She loved showy and dramatic things. What was that the caretaker was saying? Three trials? Fire, unity and fear? Assuming the trials were in chronological order, fire would be first. She wondered what they would face - many students at Hogwarts shuddered at the mention of fire from traumatic experiences, but Scarlett hadn't faced any of that stuff yet.

Unity was probably an alliance-type test, in which Scarlett would probably seek out Rose and Henry first, though she would be open to other allies - she wasn't sure who yet though. She knew Pierré and Katrina and Elena but that was about it. And fear? That sounded exciting. What would they face? Probably something cool and super dangerous.

But first, they needed to do the fire trial. After introducing their sponsors - the school nurse who they all obviously needed and Professor Pendrast, Scarlett's Head of House - the boy introduced the first trial to the participants. Scarlett registered all of the information, as did everyone else. Time limit, tokens, torches, names - of course, Scarlett had to jump in with a, "Duh." in regards to his comment about being smart enough to read their names. Disqualification, simple stuff. Scarlett scowled at the rule of being allowed to only use your wand, before patting her Fanged Frisbee with a sigh.

Afterwards, each participant followed the caretaker to a tent individually. Scarlett ambled along, one of the last. She twirled her wand, wondering what might happen. Fire? That was a very large branch. It could be almost anything related to fire. She had no idea what she was going to face before she ducked under the tent flap and came face to face with table. She waited a second before it burst into flames. She didn't jump back though. Scarlett did not jump back.

The caretaker explained the challenge. Retrieve the token in under two minutes. If you could do it in one, an extra token. Scarlett nodded and whipped out her wand. She was looking for an easy spell that was efficient in getting the token out. Dousing the flames with Extinguo was an option, but that was a second-year spell. Wingardium Leviosa, however, was a first-year spell that could levitate things. Being a first year spell, it was much easier and so would probably be better in this case.

Scarlett aimed her wand at the token. "Wingardium Leviosa!"

if successful

Scarlett grinned as the token lazily floated in the air. Bonus token for her then. She moved it to her until it dropped on the ground with a clatter. She waited a few seconds for it to cool down, before using her sleeve to pick it up, walking briskly out of the tent. That had been easy.

if unsuccessful

Scarlett scowled and attempted the spell again. "Wingardium Leviosa!" If she didn't succeed this time, no token for her. The thought made her feel slightly sick.

Aida heard Ileen’s cheering and laughed at the suggestion about sacrifices to the god of burning. If things were so bad that she could yell something like that, Aida figured she’d better help Ileen deal with the situation later. Flashing a smile and a wave her way, Aida felt a warm glow of gratitude overtake her. She wasn’t alone.

Aida was a straightforward person. Admiring the dramatic cast of Alexander and considering the different ways people were dealing with the situation, Aida was just Aida. Still, she suspected the trial might be more complex than just presenting a flaming table. Raising her wand, she cast Finite Incantatem on the table in the hopes it would cancel out what was making the table burn.
If success on table but token is flaming
Aida would be pleased that the major source of flames was gone and then cast extinguo on the token. If that succeeded, she would retrieve the token.
If success on table and the token is not flaming
Aida would go to retrieve the token within one turn, hoping for the bonus token.
If failure on table
Should Aida’s finite incantatem fail, Aida would try the most simple direct method: casting extinguo on the table.
If success of second action (extinguo) (if necessary)
She would have to endure the token if it was in flames, but no one said that the token couldn’t be burning in order to have it count as “retrieved.” If the token was not flaming, she would be glad that at least on the second try she succeeded, and go to retrieve the token.

Regardless of if Aida succeeded at the task of retrieving the token, she would immediately turn to Alexander to see how his efforts had worked out. If even one of them had succeeded she would be very happy. Looking over at Dealla, whom Aida respected for her intelligence, Aida would also look to see how things had turned out for her friend and then say something supportive about the outcome, whatever it may be.

As Alan listened to the explanations he would move toward the first trial area where he secured his torch where he was meant to put it down; he would eye the red burning torch before he gestured to Tiger to not come close, more or less to make sure he would not follow him into the first circle. As soon as Alan entered it, the stage ignited a table and he knew that the token must be on top of it. Alan would have to think of something but he had some sort of idea even if it might just backfire. He would draw his wand as he walked a bit closer to the platform and made the necessary movement as he cast "Tarantallegra," he was sounding hopeful. His plan was to make the table move vigorously to either hurl off the token or for it to slide off as soon as the table would dance wildly. He truly hoped that this would work out.
if successful Alan would move to grab the token from the ground.
if unsuccessful
Alan would have to come up with another plan, which was actually just a little disappointing as he had hoped for this to work out in the end. But apparently luck was not with him, so instead Alan would move ahead and try something else as he tried to think up something quickly. "Reducio!" he would cast aimed at the table itself in the hope to minimize its size which would either slide the token off more quickly, or allow him to pick up the token from the much smaller table. Well... there was hoping for success. If both spells landed perfectly it would mean the table was dancing around and much smaller than it had been before, possibly allowing the token to slide off more easily. And Alan would hate to be in pain, but if he were to move quick enough and make a grab for it, he could avoid getting burned by the fire?
Actions
- cast Dancing Feet Spell on the table to make the token slide off; if successful: pick it up -
and/or
- cast Reducio on the table to make token fall off or slide off more easily; if successful: pick it up -
if both unsuccessful
- take the risk and quickly grab it to hopefully avoid a lot of damage -

Pierre provided the input of a seasoned Hogwarts student, fighting fire with fire was the Hogwarts way. Though the achievement the students would aim for today was to control and carefully manipulate the fire, contrarian to idly watching everything burn as they often do. “Unfortunately, crocodiles weren’t within the budget this time.” Thomas muttered across Pierre in jest, motioning the boy to enter into the designated area for the fire trial.

Upon his entry, and the entry of all the others after him, they would see a table of little significance. Nothing more than an oak end table that would typically be placed near a couch. It resides within a large painted black circle, signifying the competitive area. The token lay atop at its center, slightly larger than a coin. At a closer glance, the students would notice the token held a shape reminiscent of the flames it was in. The token was chiseled in the shape of flames, painted with varying shades of red and orange. Made with remnants of asbestos, commonly used in fireman's attire. Not to say the token would not be hot to the touch if not allowed to cool off, though touching it shortly after removal would not provide a burn.

@Piérre Marchonné circled the table in a calculating manner. Perhaps aiming to use his sharp eye to discern an easy avenue of approach. He would find nothing significant, the task was simple and no tricks were presented as of yet. Though as he moved, the fire would react to each movement, appearing to have a conscious understanding of the boy. It would sway in different directions, dependent in the way he traveled.

Standing behind the crowd of participants on what used to be the stage, was Kit Paine. Now level with the students to offer their spectators a decent view of the action. Thomas Lestrange remained at the entry point, readily available to usher the participants in and out of the trial area. A small grinned formed on the caretaker's lips, softly whispering an incantation. "Sonorus." Effectively amplifying his voice to a volume all in the stadium's vicinity could hear.

"This fire is alive." Kit's voice echoed across the stadium. "It reacts to each of you independently. Respect it, and it will respect you. Whether there was merit to his advice or not, the fire would swiftly exemplify itself as an unaccompanied force. The fire's behavior(roll dependent) could make or break the success of each participant.

Pierre came to a halt near the table's front. The flames violently reacted to his approach, heightening at a level near the top of the Quidditch stadium, reminiscent of a blowout at an oil well. The flames remained within the circumference of the table itself, but shot up to a staggering height that the spectators would see travel well into the evening sky above. Fluctuating to different levels until Pierre made his first and last move.

Mr.Marchonne remained steadfast in the face of what few understood to be a familiar sight for the boy. The spell successfully sliced the two front table legs off, sending them scattering into the grass. The table fell forward, planting into the grass on its edge. The token remained at its center for a moment, then slowly descended onto the grass below for his taking. The moment the token escaped the blackened oaky notes of this table, the fire ceased altogether. Pierre has completed the task with only one action used. Pierre is awarded two tokens.

On Pierre's way out, Lestrange would walk past him in approach to the butchered table, flipping him the earned second token. "Well done. Hopefully your next task isn't safely transporting others on a broom." Like ninety-percent of the words that left the boy's lips, his words were stained with deadpan mockery. Of course the person he was referring to in this barb was Marion Davenport of Slytherin, who suspiciously fell from Pierre's broom at the Masquerade Ball.

Lestrange continued past Pierre, regardless of any retort. Leaving Kit Paine with a puzzling stare down in his direction. Thomas gripped his wand and aimed it towards remnants of a broken table. "Reparo." The spell laughably missed its mark by a wide margin. A collective amused gasp came from the many spectators. Kit Paine's mouth split into an even broader grin than usual as he tried to suppress a laugh, snapping his fingers to snag the attention of the addressed Slytherin boy. "Mr.Lestrange. Perhaps you could replace the table with the eleven others we have for this exact reason." Pressing his lips together in annoyance, Thomas quickly left the scene of embarrassment to find the next table in a nearby tent. After setting it in the exact spot as the previous one, he placed another token at its center. An act he would repeat when any table was compromised.

The boy then returned to his post and ushered in the next participant in line, @Rose Moon. The fire's dance was not as violent as Pierre's before her, but still reacted to the girl's steady approach. Swaying in varying directions, intermittent crackles from the wood left sparks to die in the grass around it. Equipped with a focused gaze at her target, the Lion wielded her wand.
Fire Behavior: 11

The initial spell to leave the girl's wand was surely the most practical, and predicted to be the majority's approach. But perhaps a sharp movement from the fire led to a twitch in her wrist, leaving the charm amiss past the table. No matter, as Rose regathered herself to send a more aggressive spell towards the token, successfully forcing it off the table, initiating the flames to cease, the token in the grass for her to take. Rose used two actions, she is awarded one token.

Given this table was not dismembered, Thomas only approached the table to place another token before motioning @Henry Knight to enter. "Here's a game you might actually be able to score in." Thomas spoke to Henry as he passed with a smirk, obviously the agenda today, or any other for that matter, was to be a snarky pain in the ass. A small victory for those that did not know him and thus would not be on the receiving end of petty personal insults.

While the spell had eyes for the token, it remained unmoved. "Unfortunate choice, Mr.Knight. The tokens are protected by an anti-theft charm, and it does not answer to you yet." Kit spoke from the stage, offering a grin of encouragement for Henry's continued attempt. The duelist tried a second spell, barely sending the extinguishing charm amiss, muting flames from one of the table's corners, but the token remained engulfed in flames. Henry did not acquire the token within two actions. Zero tokens awarded.

The following participant to enter, @Katrina Walker passed through the trial gate, immediately initiating an eruption of flames from the table. As if a mini volcano, emitting small splotches of fire that rained down around the Gryffindor, but none making contact with her frame.

Katrina did not display the typical logic of her predecessors. Frankly, she was not here to play games. The table has been labeled her target, and the table would suffer for placing itself in the Gryffindor's path. The brief burning sensation on her hands was the only fault in an otherwise triumphant discarding of the table, leaving some of the crowd's spectators in shock from her approach. The token rolled into the grass, available for her to take. Katrina has retrieved the token in one action. Katrina is awarded two tokens.

Next on the docket was our token first year, @Nicholas McCowan whose appearance here, at the very least, would earn some respect from his peers. Like those before him, Thomas would simply motion with an arm for the tall first year to emerge into the trial area. As he neared the table, the fire did its dance, spiraling into a tornado that sent flames upward at an aggressive rate, but still only operating within the table's circumference.
Fire Behavior: 19
Flipendo acc: 6 - 3 (DC 16) - Miss

While Nicholas had a decent approach, he lacked in execution. His initial spell sent several feet above the table, maintaining a steady hand in the face of a violent fire was no easy task. The following spell was sent just a few inches underneath, continuing the streak of fire dominance. The token and table would remain for the next participant. Nicholas did not retrieve the token within 2 actions. Zero tokens awarded.

The last of two Slytherins' was the next to be ushered into the trial area. @Alexander Varellion should be among the favored this evening, having a consistent string of experiences with unforeseen circumstances. Molding the preparative parts of his brain to adapt on the fly.
Fire Behavior: 3
Avifors acc: 19 - 1(DC 16) - Success
Bird attempts to escape fire: Fail
Wingardium Leviosa acc: 25 - 1 (DC 16) - Success
The fire was tame, the lowest and least intimidating thus far, seemingly a direct reflection of the challenger's calm demeanor. Though it did a bird no favors, as soon as the token sprouted wings to make up a typical bird's anatomy, the fire engulfed the bird before it could take flight, leaving it to revert to it's form as a token, delicately spinning to a stop atop the table. Was this intentional, as a perked ear turned towards a spectator (@Ileen Knight) that demanded a sacrifice to the fire god. Was that a fire hag here for popcorn entertainment?

Alex didn't let this initial misfortune deter his success. Regrouping to carefully hit the coin with the levitation charm, allowing it to flutter safely off the table and the flames ceased. Alexander retrieved the token in two actions. Alexander is awarded one token. Following Alexander's departure from the trial area, Thomas would locate the next closest entrant, @Elena Jangleton. Gesturing with his head for her to proceed.
Fire Behavior: 2
Extinguo acc: 17 - 1 (DC 16) - Success
What's this, the fire showing remorse for a fallen bird? Once again displaying a tame output, appearing no larger than it would for a common fireplace for Elena. Perhaps assisting in her accuracy and properly subduing of the flames with the most logical spell to use this evening. The flames dissipated underneath her spell, leaving the token available to take. Elena retrieved the token in one action. Elena is awarded two tokens.

Next to appear was one of the elder students, @Xailah Alptraum. The only part missing from her all black ensemble was the leotard texture you'd expect from a prancing nighttime kitty.

Table tumble: 1 - Crit Fail

Status: Sleeve on fire
An uncanny demonstration, easily among the most creative and daring attempts, but the execution was simply not there for Xailah. Perhaps she was taking notes from Halle Berry's interpretation, a complete flop. Following an inventive bait and switch spell, the girl chose the showman's approach. Undoubtedly giving the spectators a thrill, but only received a groan after the disastrous result. The girl may have tripped a step before her attempted tumble, or simply collided with a table's corner, effectively breaking her balance to send her rolling over the table and back on to the grass empty-handed. Xailah did not retrieve the token within 2 actions. Zero tokens awarded.

Whether the Gryffindor Prefect noticed it or not, Thomas would dully point out upon her exit "Your sleeve is on fire." A development the caretaker noticed shortly thereafter, Kit equipped his wand and ushered the girl closer. Whether she chose to approach or not, he casted the extinguishing charm, effectively dampening the girl's sleeve and muting any heated residue. "If needed, you can go visit Nurse Brumby in the medical tent for burn-healing-paste while the remaining participants face the trial."[Completely optional and has no impact on anything, except maybe her burns.]

"It's a shame your cat's not here to assist you. He knows his way around a table, eh?" Thomas offered cheerfully before turning away from the girl and back towards the next participant, @Dealla Prince. After a physical display of unity with the only other Ravenclaw, a dissolute representation of our only absent house(the hug.), Dealla was next to be motioned into the trial area. Like many before her, Thomas had some choice words of encouragement. "You sure that's your wand, and not another's?" A comment only Dealla would deduce the meaning of, the thief.
Fire Behavior: 15
Leviosa acc: Auto-success (Pierre/Alan Calming Presence)
Here comes "Dee" as many know her, sharp aquamarine eyes that reflected aggressive flames, snapping and stirring with the girl's approach. After locating her token, she made quick work of the task, effectively levitating the token off the table and ceasing the flame output. Conceivably benefiting from the tranquility provided by some of the others participating. Dealla has acquired the token within one action. Dealla is awarded two tokens.

On her approach back through the entry gate, Thomas flipped the coin in her direction, though intentionally well out of reach and into the grass between them. "Oops, slipped." With a cheeky grin, Thomas found the next in line-- @Scarlett Aden. Whom Thomas did not forget her comment earlier, the highly eloquent response of duh. Not that the boy minded a biting attitude or blunt tongue. These were among his best qualities. "The fire is hot." He stated plainly while ushering Scarlett through.
Fire Behavior: 5
Leviosa acc: 21 - 1 (DC 16) - Success
Fire fatigue was setting in, as is lulled into a smaller blaze for the Gryffindor. Emulating the success of the participant before her, Scarlett effortlessly lifted the token from the table and put the flames to rest. On her exit, Thomas would flip the bonus token for her to catch, then turning back to find the next in line. Scarlett has retrieved the token in one action. Scarlett is awarded two tokens.

Our next participant entered with a scrutinizing gaze that is respected from the renowned house of knowledge. @Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood passed through the gate with wand in hand.

Finite acc: 29 - 2 (DC 20) - Success
Having the benefit of seeing many pass before her, Aida recognized a magical spell was in place to keep the table lit. A presence that coincided with contact from the charmed token. What else might the participants see when the token interacts with other objects on the pitch? A question for another time, as Aida revealed a potential counter to the token's magic. As her spell made contact, the flames dispersed and the token lay there for her to take. Aida has retrieved the token in one action. Aida is awarded two tokens.

After giving Aida a second token, Thomas found our final participant. A boy he has met on a few occasions, who's genuine vibes usually neutralize the petty Lestrange. Thomas nodded in the direction of @Alan Vanes, instructing the Gryffindor prefect to proceed.

Alan's status: Dancing

The boy's presence apparently carried over into the fire, as the flames came to the lowest point they have all evening, only rising a foot over the end table. Though Alan would find issues in a different piece of wood, his cast of the dancing spell backfired, sending his legs into an uncontrollable frenzy. Yet, while dancing, Alan still had the wherewithal to know the clock was ticking. Having the fortitude to to accurately aim his wand and shrink the table amidst his leg fits.

The table decreased to the size of a wooden block, descending in a spiral towards the grass. In its fall, the token slipped off and ended the flame output. Though while the token lay there for Alan to take, his legs were not currently his own, and the clock was ticking.
Is Alan able to waltz to the token?
Evasion roll: 31 - 2 (DC 10)
Like a seasoned dancer, Alan was able to dictate his direction enough to lean over and retrieve the token with the allotted time. Alan has retrieved the token within two actions. Alan is awarded one token. With that, the first trial has concluded. Kit finalized the action with his approach to Alan Vanes, casting finite to end the boy's dance.

"To those of you that have succeeded, I say well done. To those of you that did not, don't hang your head." "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity" A somewhat smart man once said. Kit muttered the sonorus charm once more, ensuring the audience could hear the following. "Please take a moment to applaud the efforts from our participants, thank you."

" Our next challenge features a team game. We’ll split our even number of twelve into two opposing teams, hand-picking them to ensure a fair split. Our first team includes:
Team One
Xailah Alptraum
Katrina Walker
Nicholas McCowan
Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood
Alexander Varellion
Rose Moon

Team Two
Dealla Prince
Alan Vanes
Henry Knight
Piérre Marchonné
Scarlett Aden
Elena Jangleton

After allowing the participants to get familiar with the team setup, Kit continued to establish the game format and rules. "In this game, everyone will hold the torch assigned to you in your non-dominant hand, and your wand in the other. The goal of this game is to extinguish as many of the opposing team’s torches as you can. If a torch is extinguished, it cannot be reignited. If a torch is dropped, it will be removed from the game and considered extinguished."

"No physical action is allowed. The only items permitted are your wand, and the spells you’ve learned. With that said, please do not set each other on fire. Extinguish the flames on the torches of your opponents, or find a way to remove the torches from their grasp. Each member of the winning team will be awarded a bonus token. Oh, and not that it’s of extreme importance, but somewhere within this allotted stretch of grass lies a disguised pressure plate. Watch your step, who knows what fun surprise it might unleash."

Kit finished with his typical wide grin, pointing towards Thomas who would take the reins from there. As before, Thomas served as an usher to direct the participants to the designated location. He would lead them past the table area towards an open stretch of grass. Another painted black oval on the grass made up the exterior of this “game-space”. An entry point was marked by a wooden gateway where Thomas led the others. At its side, another table with refreshments and commonplace snacks to choose from. "You have ten minutes to discuss strategy and replenish if needed. After that, first team will start on the east side, and second on the west."

He would motion to the starting locations for the directionally challenged, about twenty meters of space in between. Following this short break, Thomas ensured each participant entered with torch and wand wielded, and found the designated starting area. Once each team was positioned and ready, Kit uttered a single word. "Begin."
Moderation Notes:
- This is part two of the first stage. You are allowed only one action for this round. Please have someone send your team's actions privately, or you can send them independently.
- The team with less torches held/lit will lose. If a student loses balance or has a torch knocked out of their hand, it is not allowed to be picked up. Additionally, if a flame is extinguished, it is no allowed to be relit.
- Regardless of team makeup, the allies that were declared in your initial post will remain the same.
- Everyone has a 10% chance to step on the pressure plate, hopefully someone does.
- Please direct any questions or feedback to Thomas Lestrange and Kit Paine.
- Thank you for your patience, future mods will come faster. Please have your posts in by Saturday, May 8th at 1200 CST. Also elect someone from your team to send actions and the action order before this time.
- Oh and feel free to ignore Thomas, I know I would.
Notes for the spectators:
-The pitch is bright enough via natural lighting for them to see all the action.
-The chatter between the participants would not be heard from the spectator area, unless they were to shout. The only voice discernible belongs to Kit Paine, who is using the amplifying charm to keep the audience in tune to the action.
