Place: Grounds near the Quidditch Training Pitch and where Flying class is taught
Date: October 10th
Time: Late afternoon around the start of sunset
Jack practiced a bit of flying on one of the school brooms, determined to keep up with his classes outside of them rather than during them in order to maintain his reputation as a slacker amongst his classmates if not his professors. Since the sun was setting, he didn't think it was very likely too many people would be out and about. However, he decided not to use the Quidditch Training Pitch for flight practice just in case. Not only was there a higher risk of being spotted there, but he didn't want to tempt another bludger to hit him in the head like it'd done the first time he'd learned of them.

As he practiced a few basic manuvers, his thoughts drifted the adopted brother he'd officially gained over the previous summer and he wondered if he was doing okay at being a brother. He recalled how Ruka had seemed to enjoy using a relatively new spell he'd learned to change his haircolor to match Jack's as of late. Perhaps they weren't exactly the same height, but at the rate Ruka was growing and the rest of their apparent similarities, they could likely be mistaken for each other very soon; just like identical twins.

This gave Jack numerous mixed feelings. He was flattered that Ruka would want to look like him, excited at the prospect of all the things they could do while looking so similar, but also concerned for Ruka. It was as if the Gryffindor was, perhaps, giving up his own, personal identity to be more like Jack. At least, that's what Jack feared. They were similar enough in looks and the way their minds worked, but if they were too similar in personality, would that be because Ruka didn't value who he was enough? Wasn't it the younger brother who was supposed to look up to the older?

Lost in thought, the Slytherin forgot to pay much attention to his surroundings or who might have been around to witness him flying. He slung himself low on his broom, like a bored kid draped on his stomach across a swing, and tried to see how low he could fly without anything but his outstretched fingertips brushing the tops of the grass blades below.

Hogwarts was feeling incredibly alive with the arrival of all the foreign students. The meals were more lively and the upcoming ball was a big topic of discussion among the students. Those cards that had appeared last month detailing both a costume party and a masquerade had of course been quite exciting at the time, but the excitement had faded slightly over time. But now with the foreign students here and the ball/party in less than a week, Hogwarts had been revived with a sense of wonder and excitement that reminded Aaron of his very first day there. It was a really nice atmosphere!

Despite everything going on inside the castle, Aaron's calling still came from outside where he knew he could ride his broom to his heart's content. There was a Quidditch game to prepare for after all! He needed to help Hufflepuff maintain its undefeated streak. Even if he had recently stepped down as co-captain of the team, he was still determined to do his best as a chaser. So, the twelve-year-old wizard was headed across the grounds and to the Training Pitch as per his usual routine, hand clutching his beloved Moontrimmer.

Halfway across the grounds, the sight of someone else on a broom caught his attention and he slowly gravitated towards them out of curiosity. A member of one of the other Quidditch teams perhaps? As he approached, the boy laid along his broom and hovered very closely to the ground, meaning Aaron couldn't see who it was. But he wanted to know. He knew it wasn't anyone on his own team - the Hufflepuff Quidditch team consisted mainly of girls aside from himself and Quinn. He knew the names and faces of the other teams, but he couldn't recognize them from the back of their head. So the young chaser continued his approach towards the boy until he was in a place that the boy would have to notice him.

"Hi!" Aaron said, his broom leaning against his side as he stood to the side. "What's the purpose of that? Is it a balance thing?" He was referring to the way the boy was sprawled across his broom with his hand grazing the grass. He did not consider that it was out of boredom - Aaron thought it must be some sort of training exercise.

"Huh?"

As soon as Jack heard the greeting, he sat up abruptly on his broom, causing him to sway violently and lose his balance as he tipped over. "Wh - whoa! Whoaa!! Oof." Fortunately, his excercise of flying close to the ground meant that he didn't have far to fall when he fell off his broom in his surprise. "Oww..."

Sitting up on the ground, he rubbed the side that he had fallen on and glanced over to see who had called out to him. To his shock and apprehension, he recognized a rather well-known Hufflepuff. Aaron, as he'd heard his name was, had been at the Blossom Ball the previous year, so Jack recognized him from there, but had never met him properly. Embarrassed and nervous, the anxious Slytherin quickly picked himself up off the ground and briskly brushed himself free of dirt and grass as best he could.

"Nothing so meaningful," he told the other second year with a sheepish smile, doing his best to conceal his anxiety behind a display of self-depreciation. "I was just messing around for a bit and thought I'd see how low I could fly. Kind of like if you try to see how slowly you can ride a bike. I guess, ultimately, the key would be about balance, but mostly I was just doing it 'cause I was bored."

Keeping his hands in his pockets, he gave a curt dip of his head. "Jack Burnett. You're Aaron Jones, right? Of the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team?" Usually, he wouldn't have been so forthcoming about his name, but in this case he had a couple of reasons for doing so. One was that he already knew Aaron, so he thought it was only fair to let him know who he was in case he didn't. Second, Jack didn't want Aaron to confuse him for a rival Quidditch player or anything of the sort. Aaron being a Hufflepuff made him uneasy enough; he didn't need him thinking of him as anyone else to either get along with or to talk Quidditch to.

Aaron winced slightly seeing the other boy suddenly sit up and then tip over off the broom. "I'm sorry," he quickly said, just as the boy collided with the ground. Thankfully he had been hovering just above the ground, so he probably wasn't very hurt, but Aaron still felt bad about startling him. "I didn't mean to spook you," he explained. Although that was probably obvious, the twelve-year-old still felt the need to say as much. Aaron moved closer to offer the other boy a hand in standing up, but he was already getting to his feet and brushing away the dirt, so the Hufflepuff stopped short.

Once he got a proper look at the other boy, Aaron recognized his face quite immediately. Ruka. No - Jack. Jack Burnett. It must be Jack, considering Aaron saw him pretty regularly in the second-year classes they shared.

"Oh, that's interesting!" Aaron said, distracted from trying to figure out the boy's identity as he explained the purpose of the exercise. "My brother tried that! Riding a bike super slowly, I mean - and he fell a lot," Aaron said with a nod, to show he understood. But in reality, Aaron didn't have the patience for such an exercise. It's why his brother had done it, not him. And the reason why he still didn't fully understand the motivation that this other second year had for trying it. Was it really helpful with balance, or was it more just to see if he could? But the boy's comment about being bored quickly explained which one it was.

"Yeah, I'm Aaron - a Chaser on the team," he said with a smile, genuinely happy to know that his name wasn't completely unfamiliar. And he got confirmation that this was Jack, as he had suspected. "Nice to properly meet you, Jack!" Why had he thought Ruka? Looking at Jack like this, he did seem vaguely like Ruka. But Aaron had only met Ruka once before... was he imagining the resemblance?

"Are you interested in Quidditch?" Aaron wondered, considering Jack seemed to recognize him specifically from the Quidditch team. Plus he was here riding a broom - maybe the balance thing was also an interest in practicing for the Slytherin team.
