When Alec proposed (in note form) that they should go hang out by the Great Lake after curfew, Wyatt was hesitant. He hadn’t really broken the curfew rule since sometime around the first month of school, having simply not wanted to since then. He was also not really in the mood to look at the Great Lake, not since he got tossed in there and a small crowd gathered afterward.

Wyatt questioned why Alec decided on that spot. Had he forgotten? That would’ve been a pretty good thing if Wyatt was being honest. Alec didn’t need to worry about Wyatt, especially if it was stuff Wyatt could handle just fine on his own. Alec really didn’t need another thing on his plate right now.

That was one of the main reasons why Wyatt decided to meet Alec this night. Though Wyatt knew it would’ve been rather arrogant to say that Alec “needed” him, he did in a way. Much like how Wyatt himself needed that hilarious, anxious, thoughtful, stupid, talented Gryffindor. While they were talking about stuff that didn’t matter, Wyatt forgot about everything that did matter, that stuff that mattered too much. He could relax, and enjoy talking to a friend without stressing about things he really couldn’t control.

Wyatt also felt the need to meet Alec this day because it was his birthday! Wyatt had been holding onto a gift for Alec since Christmas, so now was the best time to give Alec his present. Though he opted to stay at Hogwarts during the winter holiday, he managed to sneak off into Hogsmeade with a fake permission form. There, he saw a muggle shop, and homesickness drew him in.

While he was inside, though, he saw a light blue teacup with a few purple flowers painted on. He thought of Alec. Wyatt could’ve sworn over the summer Alec had said something about purple and blue being colors he liked, and of course, tea was a topic discussed. There was also a smaller, plain blue teacup next to it, and Wyatt immediately thought of Jackie.

Though Alec most likely had all the teacups he could want, Wyatt couldn’t really get anything more expensive. He felt pretty bad but tried not to think about it too much.

The teacups were given to him in little brown boxes tied with a pastel yellow ribbon, and he kept those safe under a few shirts in the drawer by his bed; a place where he hoped his dormmates wouldn’t get to them. He’d brought the boxes with him this night in a silver bag. With how long Wyatt had waited to give Alec his gift, he surprised himself by remembering they existed.

As Wyatt walked from the dark dungeons up to the first floor, he anxiously swung the bag, and had to remind himself to stop a few times.

The cups were padded in pretty tight with paper in their individual boxes, and with the combination of that and the fact they were charmed to be unbreakable, dropping the bag wouldn’t matter, but Wyatt wasn’t taking any chances.

He was praying no professor or prefect would come along and whisk him away to detention, but if that were to happen, he hoped Alec wouldn’t be there when they do.

He reached the first floor, and waited for Alec to show.

Alec had to hurry down all those flights of stairs. The boy wasn't sure how much of a bright idea this was. Yet he'd gotten to the point where it was too late to stop now. He'd thought one of his dormmates would think it's pretty suspicious. You know, Alec putting the scarf in his messenger bag. Alec put his wand in his pocket just hours before, and after finally he added the last item to the bag. Alec actually having somewhere to be. Nobody noticed as he slipped out of the room that evening. Fate could only tell what lied ahead.

As Alec made his way down the copious stairs his mind wandered. Alec had promised to be honest to Wyatt over a month ago. The promise of honesty hadn't had the desired effect. Alec was hesitant to meet with Wyatt anytime Alec wasn't feeling up to his usual self with jokes and smiles included. There was an anxiety within Alec, having to do with being burdensome or bothersome. They should've been close enough to the point where it didn't matter, but to Alec it did. Maybe it was having to do with not being able to properly express his worries or fears.

Never having the right words for them. Really, how was he supposed to tell Wyatt that he felt sick to his stomach at the thought of going home. Alec didn't like that. And Wyatt didn't ask to listen to every one of Alec's thoughts and worries. He knew Wyatt cared, he knew he wanted to help Alec out and make him feel better. It felt almost unfair to do that to Wyatt.

Alec wasn't fully aware of what the arrangements we're going back home. It was part of the reason he felt so sick. With his luck he wouldn't know till he got back home. It was stupid how scary Alec thought that was. Not worrying for himself, but Jackie in this case.

Luckily, Alec was having a great day. He was thirteen! That was something to celebrate. It was also something for him to spend some time contemplating. Hard for him to wrap his head around the fact that he was thirteen. He now had to think about the expectations people had for thirteen-years-old's. It would look a bit weird if Alec was on a playground at thirteen huh.. Maybe he could ignore just a few expectations that came with being a thirteen-year-old. Still, giddy Alec hurried his pace down the rest of the stairs before he was finally at the first floor.

Alec's eyes gleamed with excitement as he spotted Wyatt. “Hey!” Alec said, using his regular voice, before realizing whispering was a better idea. Alec hugged Wyatt as a greeting, pulling away just as fast as his arms had landed on the other. “Sorry I took so long. I wanted to make sure make sure nobody would see me as I walked out.” Alec had never been out past curfew before, he was nervous. But confident one night out past curfew wasn't going to kill him. He'd decided the peace and quiet would be nice for a change.

Alec didn't wait for long to feel the rush of wanting to be outside. “Come on, the faster we're out there the faster I can show you something.” If Wyatt had said said something after, Alec had missed that as he reached for Wyatt's hand grabbing it gently to hurry him back down the flight of stairs. He didn't seem to notice Wyatt had brought something with him. Once on the ground floor Alec couldn't hold back a grin.

“I made something, it may seem stupid. But it was incredibly fun at the time.” Alec said as they finally got out the door, and into the outdoors. After walking a bit away from the castle Alec would stop to pull out a jar from the messenger bag, bits of purple peaked out of the bag as he did so Alec did his best to close it quickly. The idea of this jar, it showed quite the opposite of what one would expect. Maybe a jar for saving something, a weird bucket list jar. No, none of those. One would like to believe it showed that Alec's childish personality would never truly leave him. Just show up in other forms. There was a paper on the jar that read, "Jokes and puns on the go."

Alec seemed both embarrassed of the jar, but also ready to crack up from the idea at any moment now. Little slips of folded paper filled the jar, Alec shook the jar gently to bring attention to it as they walked. “Now hear me out. This could save me thousands of seconds in the next year or so if we ever have serious conversations again.” Alec said, his voice reached regular tone as he gently shook the jar again. “See? Now wanna hear my sales pitch for it?” Alec asked in a joking tone. Even though he'd made up one, just for the sake of how silly it was.

Wyatt wasn’t waiting for long before he heard a startling “Hey,” that couldn’t have come from anyone but Alec J— Alec Mason. (It was going to take a lot of brainpower to remember not to say the J every time.) Wyatt could tell Alec wasn’t very used to sneaking out at night by the volume used for his hey.

Before Wyatt could warn Alec to keep his voice down, he was being hugged. Having not seen it coming, Wyatt flinched. Thankfully, the hug only lasted about a second, and Alec didn’t mention Wyatt’s flinch.

“Sorry I took so long. I wanted to make sure nobody would see me as I walked out.”

Alec’s voice was now at a whisper. Maybe he hadn’t snuck out on Hogwarts grounds before, but he’d definitely snuck out of his prison of a home on at least a few occasions. He had to have known what he was doing to some degree.

“No worries,” Wyatt said with an assuring tone, not wanting Alec to feel bad about every little thing. “You don’t look half bad in green. Should’ve been a Slytherin,” Wyatt said with a smirk. Some of Alec’s tendencies made him question why the boy wasn’t sorted in Slytherin, but the old hat likely had it’s reasons.

Besides, that also probably meant Wyatt had other house’s traits as well, and that was a thought Wyatt didn’t care to linger on. Especially if it meant he was anything like a Gryffindor— no offence to Alec, of course.

“Come on, the faster we're out there the faster I can show you something.”
“Should I be worried?”

Wyatt’s words seemed to be lost on Alec, who didn’t say anything directly about the comment. Instead, Alec gently grabbed Wyatt’s free hand and led him out of the castle, on another flight of stairs. This time, Wyatt was walking down, which was a lot easier than climbing up the dungeon stairs. Once they were outdoors, Wyatt relaxed a little more. There was a lesser chance to be seen this way.

“I made something, it may seem stupid. But it was incredibly fun at the time.”

Wyatt tentatively raised a brow as Alec reached into his bag and pulled out a small jar. At first, Wyatt was confused, as he didn’t yet see a label. That was until he saw a little paper that said, “Jokes and puns on the go,” and couldn’t bite back an amused smile. It was a very Alec J. Mason creation. It seemed Alec had just as hard a time keeping a straight face.

“Now hear me out. This could save me thousands of seconds in the next year or so if we ever have serious conversations again.” Now that they were out of the castle, Alec’s voice had reached its regular tone and volume. “See?”

“It’s perfect! Now one of us just has to carry it around all the time on the off chance we get into a heated or serious discussion,” Wyatt said with a sarcastic but light tone and a lopsided smile.

“Now wanna hear my sales pitch for it?”
“Please!”

Though it was obvious Alec was joking, something told Wyatt he did have a pitch at the ready. And if he didn’t, he’d be able to make one up on the fly just as well. Or so Wyatt believed. Alec was the most creative person he knew, and he wanted nothing more than to read some of the jokes Alec had come up with. One could only hope they were as hill-arious as the one Alec once told about the little mountain.

As Alec reflected on the few seconds of conversation before he'd rushed Wyatt out he realized two things. One, the hug greeting was uncalled for. But Alec had done it on instinct. Also hugs. Two, Wyatt is a terrible liar. The hoodie was one of the warmer things he'd brought to Hogwarts. Hence his wearing it. Alec looked terrible in green. And It was odd for him. Because Alec was used to wearing softer colors. Or the in your face red and gold. Alec still felt he didn't fit into Gryffindor. He was missing something. He hadn't caught up with the rest. But Alec also knew, there would've been no better place for him.

Ravenclaw was wit. How was Alec supposed to keep up with that? He valued intelligence, to a far extent. Not in the way they did, though. He'd flatline watching their efforts. Hufflepuff might've been nice. But Alec would've slacked off more. Unless forced into challenges the specific challenges he'd needed. Somewhere he'd have to adapt more. Yet not be extremely out of place. Ahem, Gryffindor. As for why Slytherin wouldn't work. He was resourceful. Sure, Alec was allowed to take that one, probably. Was he ambitious or cunning? Everybody he'd seen in Slytherin, they were brilliant people. Extremely smart, and very often with a plan.

Except for Miller, but he.. Well, he just looked like he needed protecting. No matter his actions or what he'd chosen to do. He didn't know how to sew! That was a basic life skill. It was likely Alec would've been the same way if he'd been in Slytherin. Maybe acting a bit tougher for the sake of never wanting to be being pushed around. Still, that would've been a different Alec. Alec set the thought aside for now.

He let his arm drop, giving the jar less attention. “I wish I had brought those speaking cards now,” Alec said. He kept walking as his pace began to slow. “Got it, or some of it,” Alec said after a few silent minutes. “Alright,” Alec cleared his throat. “J.O.P. An acronym for a jar, for all your joking and pun needs. Simply open the jar.” Alec raised the jar again slowing taking off the cap. “Pull out a slip of paper. All made from wood, natural, free-range parchment. Roll out the slip of paper. Written on by the finest of quills may I add. Not at all from a broken quill. That I surely didn't pull out. Which surely didn't happen when this idea came.” His eyes narrowed as he added the last line. Unrolling the slip of rolled-up paper. “Before finally reading out loud as so. Giving you probably creative jokes. While your mind is fast at work dealing with other things. This could be used in many-” Alec paused.

His eyes narrowing more as he stared at the slip of parchment in his hand. Raising a brow. Having finally taken the chance to read it. Within his fits of creativity. There was concinnity. Always deedy work.“Um.. This wasn't planned but.. er..” His eyebrows twisted oddly. One of confusion, the other amusement. “So Wyatt, magic snakes. Bet they have wands like all the rest of us. Probably got some pretty odd incantations. Ssssissendio, or even better addercadabra.” Alec said. He stared at the parchment now, less amused and more curious. “Fitting for snake-boy. Kind of funny honestly.” He scratched the back of his neck. “That was the only snake one I put in.” Alec appeared to be over with the idea of his sales pitch now. Of all the effable things. He'd done a terrible job of describing this one.

“I wish I had brought those speaking cards now,” Alec said. The Gryffindor began to walk slower, apparently feeling less anxious about being caught. No doubt the probability lessened as they got further away from the castle, but Wyatt made sure to listen for a third set of footsteps. Every few seconds, he’d look over his shoulder, fully expecting to see a professor tailing them. He hadn’t seen one yet, but continued looking back anyway. Just in case.

It wasn’t that he considered himself to be a paranoid person. He was only careful, and in cases like these, he needed to be, didn’t he? Alec was already in enough trouble with his parents for something that was mostly Wyatt’s fault, and though going to the lake past curfew was Alec’s idea, Wyatt had agreed to it. That was stupid in it’s on right.

If the both of them got in trouble, who would Wyatt get a howler from? No one. But Alec might get one from his mother who on any normal day would be strict and up-tight. What about under her current circumstances? Alec would only feel double the wrath. His mother might take her anger out from her divorce on Alec. Wyatt wouldn’t be able to keep his mind from blaming himself. He could’ve asked Alec to wait till the weekend, and hang out during the day.

But that didn’t matter so much at the moment. If Wyatt could just force himself into here and now, he wouldn’t feel the stress… all he had to do was completely shut his entire brain off— or at least the part that’s offering him those anxious thoughts. That couldn’t be so entirely hard, right? But what about his survival— his instincts? By shutting off the parts of his brain that (basically) looked out for him, was he putting his guard down too much? If there were any creatures lurking in the darkness, would he and Alec be extra susceptible?

Of course, as always, his wand was in his pocket. But Wyatt wasn’t over-confident. He often feigned arrogance to his peers but he couldn’t lie to himself about his low physical strength and limited magical power due to being 13-years-old. Though Wyatt couldn’t be entirely sure, the last thing Alec probably wanted for his birthday was to be mauled. Wyatt caught himself chewing on the inside of his cheek, and stopped.

His head was starting to hurt, and he suspected it was because of the stupid debate he was having with himself. Thankfully, Alec was done recalling parts of his speech, so Wyatt tuned in.

“Got it, or some of it. Alright,” Alec said, clearing his throat.

“J.O.P. An acronym for a jar, for all your joking and pun needs. Simply open the jar. Pull out a slip of paper. All made from wood, natural, free-range parchment. Roll out the slip of paper. Written on by the finest of quills may I add. Not at all from a broken quill. That I surely didn't pull out. Which surely didn't happen when this idea came. Before finally reading out loud as so. Giving you probably creative jokes. While your mind is fast at work dealing with other things. This could be used in many—”

Alec paused. Wyatt looked to see why he’d stopped talking so abruptly, and noticed that Alec had taken out a small piece of parchment from the jar. How could a joke he wrote surprise him so much that he’d just stop talking?

“Um.. This wasn't planned but.. er.. So Wyatt, magic snakes. Bet they have wands like all the rest of us. Probably got some pretty odd incantations. Ssssissendio, or even better addercadabra.”

Wyatt chuckled

But he was sort of confused. Not by the joke, that was pretty obvious. No room for confusion there. No, he was confused by what Alec said before the joke. “This wasn’t planned”? That was pretty hard to believe. Alec had written these by hand, and either read them in a joke book, heard them before, or came up with it himself. Was Alec’s intention to write the snake one and hope to never tell it? Not planned…

Another thing, his interactions with his snake over the summer was memorable enough for Alec to be anxious to tell a joke about it. Wyatt imagined how confused Alec must be after never receiving a proper explanation for why the same snake happened to show up near Wyatt on more than one occasion. Wyatt feared Perseus being around so much had made it too obvious for Alec what exactly Wyatt was hiding.

What he was hiding….

They agreed no more secrets. Wyatt felt his heart sink. He’d have to tell Alec in that case right? Not exactly. Wyatt came to his own conclusion. If Alec didn’t ask for any further explanation, he wouldn’t share it, but if Alec were to ask, Wyatt would have no choice but to tell him. He hoped Alec wouldn’t decide to leave then. There were a lot of bad ideas surrounding parselmouths, ones that might confirm a lot of rumors going around.

“Fitting for snake-boy. Kind of funny honestly.”

Wyatt chuckled. The joke was funny in a bad-joke kind of way. And Alec had gone through the trouble of writing it. He deserved a laugh.

“That was the only snake one I put in.”

“No need to specify that. Snakes aren’t a very sore subject with me. As a Slytherin, I’m not really sure they’re allowed to be,” he joked, smirking. Wyatt put the hand that wasn’t carrying the little silver gift bag in his pocket. Maybe if he just sort of… pretended the snake-centric events of the summer didn’t happen, Alec would forget. It was unlikely, yet worth a shot.

“I wonder, what made you choose here… and now? To celebrate your birthday, you wanted to hang out by the Great Lake after curfew. Did you spin some wheels of time and place in your head to make a plan?” Though it may have come off as hastily changing the subject, and that was a plus of his question, Wyatt was genuinely curious. Why had Alec chosen this? Did he want to get detention? Did he just like the thrill of the maybe?

Alec playfully rolled his eyes. Smiling, per usual. “Oh yes, and I would hug a lion.” He said sarcastically. Lions were an interesting house representation choice. But not as creative as Alec would've liked. “Or throw one..” His voice trailed off. A mention of the snake-related events of the summer. Alec still couldn't understand Wyatt's explanation. All Alec knew was he pried him enough. It was best to leave all of it alone unless Wyatt brought it up. After such his eyes caught the dark sky above. This was all while trying to come up with an answer for what Wyatt had said next.

“Spinning a wheel of times and places? That would've made it interesting. Thanks for the idea, if I'm bored I'll use it.” Alec made a mental note. “I'd rather not be declared as a boring person via quotes anymore.” It was about time Alec answered, hm.

“I'm impatient, mate. Out of all the people I'd expect you would know this. Couldn't wait to see my friend any longer. Or celebrate my birthday.” Alec said, it sounded genuine and was. But Alec was also just bluffing there before he got to the real points. “Besides, I had to do some practice for duelling after classes were out. Otherwise, I would've done it sooner. I can't imagine skipping out on practice though. I'm on a losing streak.” Alec wasn't sure it was going to get any better.

He was terrible at duelling, he needed more strategy. “Taking a break from practicing isn't going to help it,” Alec added as an afterthought before heading to his next point. Even with this truth, he was still bluffing. Alec knew the real reason. “I mean, what are the odds we get caught anyway?” High, he knew this wasn't a bright idea. Alec had kept his record clean so far at school. They had no knowledge. He wished his record was that clean at home. Alec put the slip and the jar carefully back in the bag before rubbing his arm awkwardly.

Whispering, “-and I dunno. I might be a little homesick.” The point. Even while the thought of going home made him sick. This and the fact he skipped going home for Easter break. There was a sense of longing for it. Just wanting the normalcy he knew he was never going to have back. “I shouldn't have dragged you out here with me though. The fact that I wasn't fond of the idea of being out here alone isn't a reasonable excuse for it.” Alec was unfamiliar with the grounds of Hogwarts at night. Therefore at unease with it, while it was a comfort.

Alec went back on his actions quickly. He was never sure of his own. Trying not to apologize as an instinct. The last time he had Wyatt had gotten upset. The situation had been more serious. But Alec felt it what the same instance in retrospect.

“That in mind, I still want to make a fun night out of it if you do.” Alec let his mouth move faster than his mind. Finally, he was left with nothing to say. Already trying to catch up with the words that had come out of his mouth. He let his feet subconsciously kick at the dirt as they walked.

“I mean, what are the odds we get caught anyway?”

“The odds are high, Alec,” Wyatt replied, though quietly. His tone was joking, but there was a tinge of seriousness.

The Slytherin side eyeing his friend, surprised that Alec didn’t seem to be thinking as clearly as he normally did. Normally Alec was so careful– too careful, maybe. Perhaps he’d had the thought, and decided he wouldn’t share it, but who was he fooling? Not himself, it seemed. Not Wyatt. Wyatt summed it up to it being Alec’s birthday, since he’d had noticed that other people often enjoy their birthdays more than normal days.

Not finished with his reasons for wanting to break the rules for his birthday, Alec continued. “And I dunno. I might be a little homesick.” He was whispering, Wyatt noticed.

When Alec said homesick, Wyatt was immediately confused. Did Alec mean that Wyatt was helping to relieve his homesickness by meeting him here? He wondered how. Maybe it was because of the parallels between this night and the one they first snuck out together. The time being late and them walking seemed to be the only clear similarities, but it was enough, it seemed. If that’s what Alec meant and Wyatt was helping, the reason didn’t matter.

“I shouldn't have dragged you out here with me though. The fact that I wasn't fond of the idea of being out here alone isn't a reasonable excuse for it. That in mind, I still want to make a fun night out of it if you do.”

Wyatt didn’t want Alec to feel bad on his birthday, especially about something that was nothing. Wyatt didn’t care so much about breaking one little rule. To the Parselmouth, not wanting to be alone was a valid excuse to drag anyone out to the woods. Not wanting to make Alec feel bad for not wanting Wyatt to be angry, he reassured his friend.

“If I didn’t want to be here, I wouldn’t have come,” he said with a tone that said, “duh,” but kindly. Curious, he asked, “I don't mean to be rude, but is dueling club as boring as it sounds?” His tone was mainly joking now, but from the name alone, “dueling club” sounded like it’d be interesting at first, but tedious eventually.

The night, the sky as Alec almost regretfully looked away. Either avoiding looking at Wyatt or looking away to get a better view of the night. The night and its curiosities calmed him. It was the familiar air of something that seemed so far out of reach. Just a longing to be where he felt most safe, with one of the people he felt the safest around. “I know, I know. You've made that clear, I just-I don't-” Alec said, his brows furrowed. Frustrated.

“You're not supposed to be asking your friends to do things that could get you into trouble.” He ignored the secret prank group. That was different. “I don't want you in trouble Wyatt. I care-” Alec's voice trailed like he wasn't sure where he was going with that sentiment. He looked unable to continue with that sentence and moved on. “The point is If we do get caught. I-I'm taking the blame.” The stutter had come out of nowhere. He tried his best not to scowl because of it. It sounded babyish.

There was longing to have been able to change the stuttering mess of his first-year self sooner. He wished he could have gone back in time. There were a lot of regrets from that year. He, Alec was so different now. He felt like a completely different person. Maybe Wyatt would bring none of what Alec had said up. He hoped so, somehow he wanted to avoid talking about it altogether.

Wyatt had spoken everything he was going to speak by this time. Alec just needs the time to address it all. He took Wyatt's words seriously, not taking any time to process his tone of voice. Or the obvious.“What?” Alec smiled and shook his head right away as a no. “Not at all. It's so much fun!” Alec's face brightened up right away. No hiding a smile there. His face would finally come back looking Wyatt's way. “The people you meet are so interesting. My first duel was against one of the Slytherin teams. You should have seen them, Amara, and, oh I'm forgetting his name.” Alec said he looked like he was trying to think back and remember it before shaking his head.

He was pretty sure the kid from the duel was who he had for secret Santa though. “They were throwing insults at each other left and right. It was crazy. Also the duel with the Hufflepuff's, everybody was wishing each other good luck. Everybody is nice.” Alec said, he seemed giddy talking about it. Bouncing with excitement as he spoke. “You should try out Wyatt you would have some strategy. I think you'd be good. You should come to my next duel and watch. You never know.” He made eye contact with Wyatt, trying to make sure not to surprise him or make him uncomfortable as Alec nudged him gently.

It looked as if they were almost at the lake.

“What? Not at all. It's so much fun!” Alec’s eyes lit up as he turned to face his friend. “The people you meet are so interesting. My first duel was against one of the Slytherin teams. You should have seen them, Amara, and, oh I'm forgetting his name. They were throwing insults at each other left and right. It was crazy.”

Wyatt chuckled. He’d only come in contact with Amara Dragamior once, but from what little he’d seen of her, it made sense that she’d be the type to keep things interesting. Wyatt also noticed that Alec was practically vibrating with joy as he talked about dueling. The shift from Alec’s recent default despondent disposition to this one of pure bliss would’ve been jarring if it wasn’t so nice to see. After months of shutting himself away, Alec deserved to smile.

“Also the duel with the Hufflepuff's, everybody was wishing each other good luck. Everybody is nice. You should try out Wyatt you would have some strategy. I think you'd be good. You should come to my next duel and watch. You never know,” he said.

“Of course, I’d love to watch one of your duels. I bet you shook Amara to her crazy core with how awesome you were,” Wyatt said. “You know, during one of our house cup celebrations, Amara walked right up to Jensen, and with the straightest face, asked if she’d be willing to lend us some firewhiskey.”

“I dunno if I’d ever become a duelist, though. Even the thought of going up against the Alec J. Mason is far too much for me to handle,” Wyatt said with a smirk. He noticed that they had reached the lake. Wyatt didn’t stand very close to the lake, but close enough to admire it.

Something about the water was far more beautiful in the moonlight than it could dream to be during the day. The way the crescent moon was reflected in the water was perfect. The way it contorted with the ripples caused by fish jumping in and out of the water made it look like a piece of abstract art. However, the lake wasn’t close to a substitute for the sky itself. Wyatt looked up at the stars and took a deep breath.

“Tell me about that duel you were talking about,” he said, as he looked from the sky to Alec.

There were things he liked, and most things made him smile, but he was able to brighten up right away at the things he loved. Alec laughed it sounded more than plausible. He'd met the girl twice, she a very distinctive personality.“really? Well if she was that serious she should've just tried to sneak into the Gryffindor commons instead.” Alec said it was clear he had a lot to say. As always it had seemed the case with Alec, he much preferred it to not talking to Wyatt though. Being able to tell him things he hadn't spoken about just yet, for lack of importance was always interesting. He had some stories to tell, even some from his first year, as surprising as that was.

“Last year there was this end of the year party in the common room. There wasn't exactly fire-whiskey, but someone had been able to get butterbeer. There was enough of it that some of the others were acting a little weird...” Alec hadn't drunk any, he just sat there, extremely quiet trying to feel like he was fitting in. He was still there with flexible morals, bending rules but not daring to break them. Someone did come in and looked like they were going to say something about it. There was a tiny lecture if you call it that, but somehow no real trouble that time for anybody, something about a rough school year. Until he participated in a game of spin the bottle, it was him pushing himself into what others were doing awkwardly. He felt a little more in place in a game like setting. As he had decided he didn't like spin the bottle. The highlights, which were not that all enjoyable, being kissed by a scary older girl, and pretending to be kissed by one of his dormmates. Yeah, it was weird, Alec would rather not think about it.

“Excuse me? Going up against me is too much to handle?” Alec asked, he laughed. “I lost my first two duels Snake-boy,” The Snake-boy thing was going to be a new habit since Alec had decided he liked the nickname. It was teasing Wyatt in a friendly form. “-there is no way that's possible. Me and AJ, oh um... Allister-Jameson MacAllister for full; anyway, we have a new strategy now though. He'll probably end up being the target still. He was knocked out first in our last two duels.” Speaking of AJ, he and AJ looked oddly alike, at least for the hair. They presented themselves in very different ways, and AJ's accent shown brightly, it was a thick one. Sometimes a little bit hard to understand. Oh! Like Wyatt's, it almost reminded him of Wyatt's that one time.

“The upcoming one?” Alec asked, his voice didn't sound as though he was paying much attention now. Leaning forward and looking at the lake, the way moonlight reflected off and onto it like a mirror. Alec set down his bag, being careful to be gentle about it was the glass jar inside, the other item was less easy to break.

“I'm hoping we'll win, I wanna prove we can. I know AJ is getting upset since he's the captain and he's lost all his duels so far.” Alec said, his voice still sounded nonchalant and far off. Slipping from his lips, he wasn't thinking. “The duel is twelve days from now, we're up against Ravenclaw.” All Alec could think about with the duels was practice, practice, practice. You fail, get up and try harder. It was important to Alec to be good at dueling. He needed to be good at it, the reassurance of having magic as protection made him feel better. Even if losing didn't, he was going to need to get better. He couldn't let himself lose, he was going to win.

Wyatt seemed to be caught up in the sky rather than the lake as Alec looked over. To be fair, Alec didn't blame him, Wyatt hadn't had the best time while out at this lake. While Alec had either was debatable. The lake was peaceful, and calming to Alec, yet when he thought of Wyatt there's and memories like such It started to feel less that way. The sky comforted Alec. since he'd grown up under the stars. It was how he could get out, he lived for the night. The twinkling lights in the sky were reassuring that things were going to turn out okay.
