Returning to London for Spring Break
It was an approximate 15 minute journey from London's Kings Cross Station where the Hogwarts Express arrived to South Kensington Station where Simon Kincaid called home. That was, as long as one took the Piccadilly line. Through the Underground, he would travel by rapid transit below the ground of London, passing the British Museum, Soho, The National Gallery, just touching the corner of Hyde Park, and finally arriving at his station.
While it was only 15 minutes, it felt like an eternity and the closer that he got to his station, the faster his heart raced. This wasn't just first year student, Simon Kincaid, who had been sorted into Hufflepuff returning for Spring Break from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This was Simon Kincaid returning for Spring Break, dhampir.
He would have to tell his aunt. There was no doubt about that in his mind but how did one tell someone something like this? Upon the first greeting? Did he greet her with a smile, give her a hug, and then spill "Oh, hi, Aunt Maggie. Yes, I remember how strong I am. I'll be careful not to crush you. Funny thing about that strength...did you know I'm a dhampir?"
Over casual conversation and afternoon tea? "Shame it's just tea that fills these cups. I recently found out I'd rather it apparently be blood. I'm half vampire, you know. Yep, fangs and all."
Nope.
There was no good way to bring this up lightly. It was going to have to be a conversation dedicated to the topic alone and he wasn't ready for it. Nevertheless, the train pulled to a slow as it approached South Kenginston and there at the platform was his aunt. He smiled.
Simon grabbed his trunk and left the train, coming right to her as she jumped up and down and screamed in delight as she saw him. "Oh, my sweet, sweet Simon!" she said, coming up to him quickly and engulfing him into a hug. It felt so good to see her again as he had missed her very much at his time at school.
"I almost forgot your strength, my Strong Simon," she said, using those /s/ word syllables to go with nicknames for him as she had done ever since he could remember. "Yes, I remember how strong I am. I'll be careful not to crush you." It was just like how it went in his mind. But he didn't continue the statement. Instead he pulled back, smiled to his aunt that he loved dearly, and took her hand. "Let's go home. I've missed it. I've missed you."

Returning home for supper
Home so far had been everything that he thought it would be. It began with a long conversation with his aunt about all things school related in the living room, followed by going up to see his bedroom again after so many months away, and then visiting his friends. He saw Oliver and Grant, Graham and Benny. While he wasn't able to be fully honest with them about all things school related at Hogwarts like he could his aunt, he still was able to tell them about the friendships he made and the craziness of classes (leaving out some details, of course!) They all caught up quite easily and as the sun slipped from the horizon that first evening of his Spring Break, it felt like no time had been lost. They raced in the streets of London and played a sort of capture the flag type game until it was time for them to head home.
For a time he had forgotten.
With his friends it hadn't been a thought in his mind what he knew he was - a dhampir, a monster. No...just HALF dhampir. He was half human. Half his mother and his mother had been one of the best. Don't lose sight of that, Simon.
He entered back into the townhome he shared with his aunt in South Kenginston and was greeted with the smell from his favorite meal - she was making steak. It was one of the few things that he actually enjoyed eating and now he knew why. Simon entered into the kitchen, startling her from his arrival.
"Sneaky Simon!" she laughed, shaking her head at not noticing his arrival. The boy was fast and sometimes his movements rather faster than normal - or maybe she was just distracted by the meal making. "I made your favorite," she smiled to him. He thanked her and began helping prepare the table.
Minutes later the plates were set out, the napkins, the utensils, the salad, the sides, the steak. His aunt had a way that made everything always look like it came straight out of Home and Gardens magazine or something but it was nice. It showed that she cared in everything that she did.
Simon sat down and began fixing his plate slowly. He couldn't let more time go by and not tell her. It was starting to feel like a lie, even if it wasn't.
He drew in a slow breath and let it out and she looked up from fixing her plate to him, catching the worry on his face.
"There's something I have to tell you and it's not going to be easy..." he began.

If I Told You What I Was, Would You Turn Your Back On Me?
His aunt was just about to take a bite of her meal when he said the words. Combined with the tone of his voice and his now hesitation, she lowered her fork, no longer as hungry as she was moments ago. Simon Kincaid was normally so happy-go-lucky, so casual, so carefree. This wasn't like him.
"Well, I guess first I should ask you...my mum - she was just a witch, right? No...other things going on?" he began. Females could be dhampirs or vampires so who knew, maybe that's where he inherited this from. His Aunt Maggie tilted her head some to the side at the question, as if trying to fathom what her nephew was trying to get at.
"I'm not sure what you're asking," she said but then again she didn't have much knowledge of goblins or trolls or vampires or werewolves. Not truly. This wasn't part of her world.
"I mean, she never had my paleness or aversion to the sun or weird sleep habits, right?" Simon figured those would be tale-tell signs of if his mother had been turned into a vampire, or somehow had been a dhampir all along. His Aunt Maggie shook her head. "No, nothing like that." She knew that those were traits that her nephew had.
So it wasn't his mother.
There was some silence as the knowledge of what he already knew began to truly set in. And when he would finally say it outloud, there was no going back. The truth would be out, to himself and to one of the people he most cared about. "I discovered something about my father," he said and his aunt watched him patiently as if knowing whatever it was that he was trying to tell her wasn't easy for him.
"You know how I told you that unicorns and dragons and werewolves and trolls exist? Well, that's not all. This is going to sound crazy, but I'm pretty sure that my father was a vampire. Or rather...that he is a vampire. I guess that all depends on where he is now, you know, if he's...still around and all." He was stammering over his words but he had gotten the most important part out. "And I'm what the magical world calls a dhampir, a cross between a human and a vampire."

If I Told You What I Was, Would You Turn Your Back On Me?
She set down her fork completely as she stared forward at him. "Come again?" she asked, her voice sounding a little strained. Was she upset? Simon looked down, having a difficult time looking at her kind innocent face as he made this declaration to her. His final confession. There was no going back now.
"A...a dhampir," he tried not to stutter and be confident about this. He wanted to show her through his words and tone that this wasn't something to be afraid of because deep down he knew his own self and he knew that he wasn't anyone to be afraid of. He was Simon Kincaid, one of the nicest people around - dhampir or not.
"Half human, half vampire. I'm thinking that's probably why she left the relationship - that it started to feel somehow off. They can have this unsettling aura about them and I'm thinking that maybe she began to feel that. I can't really say, only guess."
"But how..." she began but cut herself off and he watched her. Her gaze remained on him but moved from his hands slowly up to his face and he could imagine she must be thinking about all the irregularities of him over time - sleeping only every 3 days or so, pain and burning in the sunlight, the appetite off, stronger than normal, faster than normal. She even used to joke at times about him being 'her little vampire' because of the teeth and all those other things. No longer a joke, a reality.
But even when there had been evidence in the joke, it was always still looked at in humor and with endearment. Simon smiled to his aunt. She had asked how.
"Well, it's my understanding that when a man and a woman care about one another..." but she quickly saw what he was doing here and she wasn't ready for THAT conversation to be the topic at hand and brought her hand up. "No, no, no!" she quickly stammered and Simon watched as a small smile came.
"I'm still me," he then continued. "I'm still the Simon that likes to play the guitar and the piano, the Simon who wants to be with friends and loved ones. I'm still the Simon who's wanting to be the good in this world. None of that has changed."
"It's always been there, Aunt Maggie. It didn't make a difference before. I'm not planning on letting it make a difference now."
He watched as his aunt slid her chair back from the table, creating a bit more distance from the two of them. He really hoped that she could wrap her head around this idea because he didn't want anything at all to change between them.
"Of course, you're my smart, strong, sweet, splendid, sophisticated, stable, ...Supernatural Simon," she said to him as she came over to where he sat. He slowly stood and she smiled to him before wrapping her arms around him.
He was still him. He was able to tell her what he truly was, and she was still there for him.
This was still unconditional love.
This was still full support.
This was still no judgement.
This is still where he belonged.
This was still home.
