The Mysterious Lake
It was a peaceful, serene afternoon when Mae was walking down a path from the grounds. The Great Lake, the most mysterious part of Hogwarts next to the Forbidden Forest. Mae walked down the path and sat down on the ground. The lake was drifting, serene and nice just like the day. As she sat there she wondered about what was deep down in the lake, she had heard stories of Merpeople living down there and even a giant squid. The water was so calm it was almost alluring to Mae, if she weren't here waiting for someone she would be almost tempted to dive right in, of course she would bring a bad of gillyweed with her. But, Mae knew better, today she was meeting someone new. Her name was Alina and they had been owling for a few days. Just like Mae, Alina enjoyed swimming and the water, I mean who could blame the girls the Great Lake was massive and they could probably spend hours down there. This wasn't Mae's first rodeo meeting someone new, so the fear she felt meeting new people for the first or second time, was starting to go away. It was as if Mae was starting to feel comfortable at Hogwarts. Although Mae did feel some nerves as she had no clue was Alina looked like, Mae knew that the feeling of not knowing was people looked like would stay with her but she did start to feel comfortable making new friends.

The Mysterious Lake
"Mae Winters, Mae Winters," Alina hummed to herself, as she rushed down the stairs and out of the castle. She was supposed to be meeting her today, and she couldn't be more excited! The two of them had a few things in common, and Alina couldn't wait to see what more they did. They had owled each other a couple times, and finally figured out a time and place to meet. If Alina didn't hurry up, she was going to be late!
She ran down the path, the Great Lake finally coming into view. And was it great. No matter how many times she came down here, it was always as beautiful as the first time she saw it. She grew up with her father telling her stories of all the days he spent next to this lake reading or napping, or even playing around. If Alina had it her way, she would spend every moment she had here. 'I wonder if Mae knows any merfolk lore or about the giant squid?' She mused to herself, making her way down the path.
As she got closer, a figure got clearer. 'Is that her?' Alina thought, as she jogged closer, hair flying in her face. "MAE!" She yelled out to the girl that sat near the lake, robe tucked around her and gaze fixed firmly on the water. Hopefully this was the girl, and not someone else. She would feel pretty bad if it was!

Mae sat there her gaze fixed on the water, she was excited to learn about what was down there. She sat and wondered about what it would be like to meet the merpeople down there, if they were anything like they were from movies, and what it would be like to be face to face with the giant squid. Sure Mae thought the Forbidden Forest was just as alluring but there was just an extra oof about the Great Lake. Mae turned around to see if anyone was coming, but no one was, she was sure she told Alina to meet her here. Mae shook her head, "She's probably going to get here, maybe she was held up," she told herself, she wasn't being super impatient but she didn't want to assume the worst just yet. She then heard someone walking down the pathway, with every crunch of the ground they seemed like they were getting closer and closer. Mae didn't want to turn around she would feel super weird for staring at someone else. The person started to sound like they were jogging. Mae thought to herself that it wasn't her then, but it could be if she was late. The person then yelled out "MAE!" as they ran down, Mae turned around and she saw a girl with Blonde hair and Gryffindor Robes. Mae shook her head yes.

She finally caught up to the girl, doubling over and breathing heavily. "I'm-....sorry....late...classes...." She wheezed, hands rested on her hips before she threw her head back to take in the fresh air. "Ugh, my papa always told me that I should practice my running more 'cause I would need it....should have listened to him," She grumbled to herself before turning to the girl beside her.
"Hey Mae, I'm Alina. It's so great to finally meet you!" She grinned happily. "I would give you a hug, but honestly, that's a bad idea right now." Alina laughed lightly, feeling a bead of sweat run down her neck. "It's such a beautiful day today!" She gestured out to the grand lake in front of them. "I can't wait for it to become summer so we can finally swim in it," turning back to her companion, she continued. "Wanna go dip our feet in?" Alina offered, turning back to the lake, the glittering of the water in the warm sun calming her.

Mae turned around as the girl finally caught up "I'm-....sorry....late...classes...." she said. Which was okay with Mae, she enjoyed waiting and looking into the lake. "Ugh, my papa always told me that I should practice my running more 'cause I would need it....should have listened to him," the girl then said, Mae knew for certain that had to be Alina because swimming and running were never put together. She turned to Mae "Hey Mae, I'm Alina. It's so great to finally meet you!" She said to Mae with a grin, to which she grinned back. Alina then went on to say "I would give you a hug, but honestly, that's a bad idea right now.". Alina said as Mae saw the sweat coming of of her. She felt a little bit bad that the poor girl had to rush here. "It's such a beautiful day today!" she said looking into the lake "I can't wait for it to become summer so we can finally swim in it,". Personally Mae couldn't wait either yeah she was a bit nervous about the mermaids but she thought that if we stayed off their area they would probably leave everyone alone. "Wanna go dip our feet in?". Alina said looking back at the lake "Yeah sure, the water looks really nice, and yeah I can't wait to go swimming either during summer although I am a bit worried about the mermaids, I think it's more of a if I leave them alone they will leave me alone situation though. Also I swear by summer imagine how crowded the lake will get," Mae said to Alina with a smile, honestly she couldn't.

She walked over to the water, and kicked off her shoes and socks to dip her feet into the cold, cold water. She shivered. "Yeah sure, the water looks really nice, and yeah I can't wait to go swimming either during summer although I am a bit worried about the mermaids, I think it's more of a if I leave them alone they will leave me alone situation though. Also I swear by summer imagine how crowded the lake will get," Alina nodded along to Mae's comments. "I've read so many stories about the merfolk in the lake, and even with how dangerous they can be, I still want to see them," She laughed, kicking up the water a bit. "When I was younger, my papa said I was half-mermaid because I loved the water so much. I still kinda took his comment seriously. Do you think I could ever manage to ask one? A merfolk I mean, can they tell half-breeds?"
She turned her eyes back to the water, the sunlight glittered off the water as it ebbed and flowed. So many mysteries, so much life was held underneath the dark blue waters and a part of her just wanted to dive on in and discover them all. The mysteries and secrets ate away at her, gnawing at her curiosity. She wanted to know. She wondered if she would be able to convince her Herbology teacher to part with some gillyweed...

Alina kicked off her shoes and she sat by the water. As Mae did the same. "I've read so many stories about the merfolk in the lake, and even with how dangerous they can be, I still want to see them," Alina laughed kicking up the water a bit. "When I was younger, my papa said I was half-mermaid because I loved the water so much. I still kinda took his comment seriously. Do you think I could ever manage to ask one? A merfolk I mean, can they tell half-breeds?" Mae laughed a bit at her comment. Mae lived in an area where she would have to drive about 35 minutes to get to the beach, and with her super crazy family she barely ever got to go but she loved the water. As a kid she would dream about meeting Mermaids and Fairies, so when she got to hogwarts Mae was very interested but she soon found out they were not like the movies had portrayed them at all. "Yeah I kind of would've liked to have met a mermaid, I used to be obsessed with that stuff so finding out about how mermaids really are it kinds of shocked me a bit," Mae said letting out a bit of a giggle.
Also it's going pretty okay, I haven't had it yet but that was super funny. My mom just wants to have it be me and my friends this year cause last year I invited this girl who turns out didn't like me too much.

"Yeah I kind of would've liked to have met a mermaid, I used to be obsessed with that stuff so finding out about how mermaids really are it kinds of shocked me a bit," Alina nodded sagely. It was the exact same for her. When she realized that they weren't all pretty, happy little half-human half-fish beings that roamed the waters, it made her view things in a different light.
She did know that the merpeople of Greece were the more beautiful of their kind, due to the warm waters. But the selkies and merfolk in Ireland and England were less so. Gray skin, green hair, faces that resembled a weird combination of fish and human features. Still, it never did lessen Alina's love for them, and respect.
"I can definitely understand that. But they're still beautiful in their own way. I heard that sometimes you can hear them sing under the water." She shrugged. "So, how are you liking Hogwarts so far? Get into any mischievous trouble?" Alina winked, a laugh on her lips. She had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting people in awkward circumstances, getting lost in corridors and and crying her heart out at the top of an astronomy tower with other people present. It had been an adventure, that's for sure.
