Snow
A cold wind was blowing through the grounds of Hogwarts today. One boy stood alone in the snow, packing together a ball of snow which he began to push along the ground, gathering mass as it went. Despite the chill, the boy had his coat undone, the worn out fabric blowing in the wind, air passing through holes and whipping threads along the frayed edges. Beneath that old coat, however, was a brand new sweater. Hufflepuff yellow, with black trim at the edges and a wonderful little badger crest on the breast. It was immaculate - no stains of ink, grass, or any other variety to be seen. It was just such a shame that it had to be shrouded under more cheap hand-me-downs, but it'd do for a start.
Like Sisyphus, George pushed the growing boulder of snow up against the incline of the hilly grounds. There had to be some kind of snowman-assembling spell that could do this for him, no? Magic brought solutions to all kind of mundane problems. Had Sisyphus been a wizard, he could have just used the levitation charm to put the boulder up and down the hill. And he could have used some jinxes to stop those birds from eating him. If that was Sisyphus. It could have been one of those other old Greek guys. There were far too many - his uncle had gotten a book about them and mailed it to George for Christmas. No - it wasn't Sisyphus. Socrates was the one who got eaten by birds.
By the time the thought occurred to him that he could have used the levitation charm to get the boulder up the hill, he'd already done the job by hand. Oh well - hard work builds character, or so George's mum said. If that were the case, Sisyphus must have had a great personality, at least before the birds got him.
Taking his gloved hands off of the snowball, he raised an arm up to wipe the sweat from his brow. His plan finally coming to fruition - the boulder rolling down the hill, collecting snow without an ounce of effort from George, growing of its own accord. His mum had told him that hard work paid off, but his father had told him that good investments can pay for themselves. Watching the great snow-boulder roll, it was hard not to agree that the work had been worth it.
At least until the boulder, with additional speed provided by the long roll down, crested another hill and continued onward to the edge of the lake, splashing in and bobbing away before soaking up water and disappearing under the surface.
"Piss," George muttered, wrinkling his nose at the sight of the disintegrating snowball. Looks like mum was right again. With his first effort thwarted, George collapsed backward on the hill, and settled for the much easier task of making a snow angel.

Snow!
It was a cold winter day, this January afternoon, and the Hogwarts grounds were white and pretty with a blanket of fresh-fallen snow. It snowed a lot in Scotland, but last year Jake had been far too homesick for snowy days with his parents to enjoy it very much. Now, in his second year, homesickness didn't hold the same power as it once had (just a little) and Jake had come out on a mission. But where to find the perfect spot?
His journey led him over the chilly hills, which would come perfectly in handy for what he had in mind. Even though the air was cold, Jake was well-protected against it. Jake always dressed warm. You HAD to dress warm or you could get frostbite, which could maybe make you have to chop your foot off. So that meant layers, and layers, and snowpants, and mittens, and a warm hat, and a big yellow coat with a fuzzy black hood - Jake's favorite jacket since it reminded him so much of Hufflepuff house. He liked it so much that he sometimes wore it inside, even when there was no snow to speak of.
That was when Jake spotted a familiar tattered brown coat lying down in the snow.
"Hi Georgie!" Jake said, dropping down to his knees, putting his hands on George's shoulders, and leaning over his upside down head like spiderman and mary jane to greet him. "Look what I've got!" he said, holding up a mittened hand where a large carrot was sticking out from his fist, displayed over George's face.
The perfect ingredient for making a snowman.

One of the first life lessons Ami learned after moving to England was that snow in downtown Chicago was very different from snow in suburban London.
You didn't really go sledding in Chicago. There was simply not enough room unless you planned on either running face-first into the side of a building or getting hit by a car. Sure, you could go ice-skating in Millennium Park if you were really craving some sort of wintery-fun, but by the time school let out and you ran home to put on your snowpants, all the snow had turned grey and slushy. On the other hand, in suburban London, you could always play in the snow. Whether it was at the park, or in the field behind her school, or even on the roof of their flat, the snow remained fluffy and white and incredible.
In Scotland? The snow was out to kill you.
Bundled up as warm as she possibly could be without literally dragging a bonfire around with her, Ami trudged around outside, kicking at the powdery white stuff that seemed so insistent on clinging to every exposed square inch of ground. "Freaking snow," she grumbled, burying her face into her scarf as the wind howled about. She was craving human company and conversation, and luckily, she spotted two figures practically on top of one another atop a hill. Maybe they'd be some classmates she already knew!
But as she drew nearer, it was clear that was not the case. @George Henry, a fellow Headliner member and insolent little squirt was lying down in the snow, presumably dead, with @Jake Morris hovering over him.
"Hey, nerds. What happened to your wand?" she asked, towering over both Hufflepuffs, staring at the lumpy orange stick in Jake's hand. "Oh... is that a carrot? Why do you have a carrot?"

hex code: #475c5fInteracting with @George Henry, @Jake Morris and @Ami ProcoppioThere was no way to put it nicely. Winter in Scotland absolutely sucked.
───────────────────────────
Juniper didn't have much experience with snow, having spent most of her life in places that received little to no snow in the winter, but her last two years in London had given her the impression that it was every inch the fairytale the storybooks promised. Which was why she had expected it to be the same way here, only to have Scotland bitchslap her for her stupidity when she first stepped outside last month. Even now, when she knew of the bitter cold that awaited her outside, still let out a startled squeak as the wind met her face, eyes watering a little. Fortunately, she had been bundled up with layers and layers and layers of clothing to keep her warm, or she thought she might have keeled over and died of hypothermia right there and there. After shaking out her legs and arms to make sure they hadn't frozen and fallen off, she continued on her way down to the grounds, pulling her purple beanie more securely over her head.
What she really wanted to do was someone to talk to and play in the snow. Aside from the wind and horrendously low temperature, the day was in no way unsuitable for frolicking outside. In fact, she could see three blobs in the distance, conversing on the top of a snowy hill. It was too far away to determine if she already knew them or not, but regardless, Juniper was planning on talking to them and joining in on whatever they were doing. Her New Years resolution had been to make more of an effort in socialising - no doubt that she would forget about it by the end of the month, and she had gotten off to a bad start, but it was true that Juniper was very much invisible at this school.
Her pace quickened as she approached, lips already tugging upwards into a friendly smile. Now that she was closer, she realised that she could recognise neither person, but nevertheless she continued. "Hi, guys, what are you-" Juniper's sentence was cut short as she tripped over a branch obscured by the snow, causing her to faceplant right in front of the three people she was hoping to befriend. She was so surprised she that she didn't have time to scream. Thank heavens that the snow was there, cushioning her fall and leaving her physically unhurt (although the same couldn't be said for her pride). The Slytherin flailed for a second or two before scrambling to her feet, an embarrassed pink flush tinging her cheeks even as she laughed at her own clumsiness. "Are you building snowmen here?" she asked, eyeing the carrot in one of the boy's hands. "Can I join in?"

Snow
Warm clothes and cold winds were the best of days. Snowfall in Dublin was usually not nearly as white as it was here in the highlands. Cars and other muggle machines usually turned bright white snow into a sort of gross grey slush. Aside from grey slush, Jack had a favorite pass time, and it was whipping through the air towards the group of students. In particular, Mr. George Henry. The sphere of an icy hell whizzed across the sky in a ridiculous arc. Like a missile, the small projectile dropped like a bomb, directly onto the unsuspecting Henry. A small poof of white exploded as Jack made contact.
"Fookin' BULL'S-EYE!" Was all that could be heard from the rather incompetent prefect as fist-pumped excitedly. The boy wore a dark green military jacket with black jeans and a pair of black trainers. "Did ya' see that?! It was a perfect shot! Somebody sign meh up for the Yankee's right noaw!" The boy hopped around excitedly at the fantastic professional level throw. With a laugh, Warren trekked through the snow to the rest of his friends and Juniper. With a wave and a shit-eating grin, Jack waved at Ami, Jack, George, and the girl he had yet to meet. "Heya, you guys saw that throw right? That shit was awesome. His nose was already strawberry red, as he finally stopped in near proximity to the group. All that was left was a give a wink to George.

George put his arms out in a defensive posture when someone suddenly dropped down beside him and grabbed his shoulders - the boy letting out a sigh of relief as he spotted who it was. "Can you spare me the stress of having you pop out of nowhere like that?" he said, folding his arms over his chest. His snow angel wings were still spread wide apart at his shoulders, his open jacket falling open to show off more of that fancy new sweater as snow fell on his chest.
He reached up and took the carrot out of Jake's hand, taking a look at it. An odd thing to be so proud of, considering anyone could get one from the kitchen if you found an elf to ask. That was how he'd gotten his burlap sack for the masquerade, too. Not an impressive feat to be shouting about. Nonetheless, George gave a nod of acknowledgement and brought it to his lips, biting off the tip with a satisfying crunch. "Thank you," he said through a mouthful of carrot. It was a much needed snack after his effort of rolling up the ball of snow earlier.
Soon, the American arrived. Just the sound of her voice grated on his ears. Being on the newspaper team hadn't earned her any points with him. In fact, the prolonged contact had perhaps made him like her less. She was loony, old, and had an annoying accent. The only good thing he could say about her was that her strange voice matched the strange things she said. Even if no one listened to a word, she could still make a statement.
George realized he had sat up and began glowering at her rather than actually replying. "It's a healthy snack," he said, a speck of orange flying off his lower lip as he spoke. Ew. "Haven't they got carrots where you're from?" He snickered, scrunching up his nose in an unfriendly sneer. Not exactly the example of Hufflepuff camaraderie, this little badger.
The tension he'd worked hard to cultivate was immediately shattered as a young Slytherin stepped up and faceplanted into the snow, leaving an impression of herself behind as she stood up. "Haven't had much luck with snowmen," he admitted, looking out to the lake where the first attempt had melted away. The boy nodded toward Junper's outline in the snow. "We've got two snow angels now, though. Although yours is lacking in wings."
To the satisfaction of those he'd been antagonizing, a snowball flew out of nowhere and struck George in the chest, sending him back onto his back with his legs flying into the air. A dramatic impact, for sure. "JACK!" George shouted back, swiping the snow off his neck and digging it out of his collar where it had started to fall inside of his sweater. He was already freezing with his jacket undone - this wouldn't help. "We've already got the Yankee," he informed his friend, nodding to Ami.
"Were you all just waiting for the opportunity to ambush me? I haven't even got a snowman made," he laments, offering the carrot back to Jake with the tip missing. Undeterred, he left his butt in the snow, starting to pile up some of the displaced snow from his angel-making into a sort of ball shape. "I'm not going to throw it at you, Jack, so don't get excited. I've got an idea. Jake, help me make three of these."
Looking up at the others, he nodded. "You all can help too, if you like. Oh, uh, I'm George, by the way," he added, toward the one non-Huffle. "I write for the Hogwarts Headliner. And so does she."

"Oops, sorry," Jake said, grinning sheepishly. He hadn't meant to scare George, he'd just been excited. Excitement gave way to confusion as George took the snowman nose he was proudly displaying right out of his hands and took a chomp out of it.
Before Jake could say a word, a second surprise came. He heard a voice cut in, calling them names. Jake looked up to see a girl towering over them - a girl he recognized. He saw her in the common room sometimes, but he avoided her. She made him think of that night.
When she asked why he had a carrot, he looked at the half-eaten vegetable and shrugged.
"Um...I guess I don't," the boy said glumly.
Third surprise. Another girl came running, tripping and falling face first into the snow. Jake winced and leaned forward to see if she was alright. It luckily put him right out of the way for the fourth surprise.
A blur of motion came from the left, followed by a spray of cold snow rebounding off of George's chest and onto his cheeks. Jake turned his head quickly in surprise, looking up to see if they were under a snowy tree, but the whoops and yells of his other best friend made him realize really quick what had happened
"Wait, careful careful don't hit me!" Jake whined, covering the back of his head with his arms, and trying to make himself an even smaller target. "No throwing snowballs Jack!" he shouted in the older boy's direction. Not at him, at least. George and Jack seemed to have some kind of boys' agreement that allowed for this kind of thing, but Jake didn't want any part of the rough-housing. What was so fun about getting things thrown at you anyway?
But luckily it wasn't going to turn in a big snowball fight war that he would have to burrow into the snow like an ostrich to hide from. George sat down and began making a big mound of snow and wanted Jake's help. After a nervous glance towards Jack just to make sure he wasn't gonna try anything, Jake perked up.
"Ok! My dad taught me all about this." He planted himself down in the snow, and gingerly put the carrot to the side. Maybe they could still use it, even if it DID have a bite taken out of it. "How big do ya think we can make 'em...?" He began bringing snow together in front of him, getting ready to pack it together with his mittened hands. As he did, he heard George introduce himself to the new girl and remembered he had to do that too. Even after a year at school, he still felt shy around kids he didn't know.
"Oh, um, I'm Jake," the little badger told her quietly.

Ugh, this kid. Ami rolled her eyes dramatically as Henry fired off a few cheap shots at her nationality and accent. What did he have against Americans? "I know what a carrot is," she snapped back, certainly exemplifying the farthest thing from the stereotypical Hufflepuff kindness. Part of her was starting to regret coming over here- why did she want to waste her time talking to two kids whose dislike of her was clearly a mutual feeling?
Ami jumped backward in surprise as another kid came along, face-planting into the snow. Torn between rolling her eyes dramatically and kicking some more snow onto the unfamiliar girl, she opted for aloof apathy, staring at the dark-haired girl with pursed lips. George made small talk with her, which was admirable of course, but also wholly unnecessary. She looked about as old as Jake, which meant she was either 6 or 11, Ami couldn't exactly tell which. Either way, the redhead simply nodded at her as a greeting, although the arrival of Jack "Ya Boi" Warren would soon command all of her attention.
"Nice shot, JW!" Ami whooped, grinning widely at the only welcome face in the vicinity. Jack was a Hufflepuff second year she could actually stand being around for more than ten minutes at a time, a trait that was bolstered by the fact that they were official scar buddies. Between the two of them, it was truly a miracle that they hadn't managed to burn down the entire castle yet, but they still had three more years to make it happen.
"Suck it up, it's just snow," Ami sighed rather impatiently in response to Jake's whining, rolling her eyes again. Careful, girl, they're gonna roll right out of your head at this rate. "Also, I'm not even from New York. Do I talk like a mobster?" Stereotypes aside, she was mildly impressed by all of the bantering going on. Maybe these seven-year-olds weren't as insufferable as she had originally thought them to be. Smirking mostly to herself, she would shift her weight from foot to foot as she glanced around at the present company she was keeping.
What a group they all were- a drama queen with a hatred of Americans (@George Henry), a twelve-year-old who looked more like he was 3 (@Jake Morris), a klutzy porcelain doll (@Juniper Yu), and a boy with an ego that rivaled her own (@Jack Warren). And George expected them to make a snowman together? Sighing as loudly and obnoxiously as she could, she extracted her gloved hands from her pockets and crouched down, packing snow in the same fashion as Jake and George with the practiced air of a teen who had spent her entire childhood making snowmen.
"I don't write for the Headliner," Ami said, correcting George's introduction of her. "I'm its almighty and supreme print-mistress." Right, because she was totally the only person who worked on graphics. "Goddess of the ink, if you will," she continued smoothly, smiling wolfishly at Juniper. Poor girl really had no idea just who she nearly stumbled into. "Name's Procoppio, but please just call me Ami. Literally, no one ever has called me Procoppio."
Turning to the group as a whole, she squinted at the ball of snow in her hands. "I reckon we can get a big ass snowman between all of us, and with all that magic, y'know? I think we should try and make a giant one."

"He taught you all about it? It's not fine art, Jake," George said, having very little appreciation for the finer points of snowman sculpting. What he lacked in taste, however, he made up for in technical skill, rolling the little boulder in his hand until it was about the size of his fist. A small smile grew on his face, thinking about how impressed the others would be with his snowman-making idea - particularly Jake, who hardly had any mind for magic, and would likely be beside himself with wonder when it was actually applied to something around him. "Just make it this size. I've got a trick. Make a tiny snowman."
He looked up absently to Ami as she congratulated Jack on his shot, a little bit of cold, wet snow melting inside of George's sweater where it had fallen in. He shook himself around a bit, trying to shake it out - brrr. Maybe he should have put on something warmer - but he looked good, at least. If he died from the cold, he would be perfectly preserved in style, which is more than many wizards get. "You'd know if you talked like a Mobster. I never met one," he said, although he knew what they were. Like the Mafia, or a gang - there were a lot of different words for gangs.
His attention was entirely devoted to the construction of another ball of snow as Ami complained about his introduction and replaced it with a much more self-aggrandizing one. Very appropriate. "Whatever you are, Procoppio," he said, looking up at her with a sneer - though he couldn't suppress a little giggle that snuck out after, pleased with the teasing.
When Ami suggested making a big ass snowman with all that magic, he looked up at her in surprise. "That was my idea," he was quick to inform Jake, pulling his wand out from inside his pocket and gesturing with it down toward the small snowballs. "Why waste time rolling them around when we can just make them giant ourselves? Charms really is the most useful class I've attended here."
With that, he stood upright and stepped back, waving his wand to dismiss Jake away from the snowballs - lest he get caught in the splash zone of a miscast, not that George expected it. He was a prodigy of charms, after all. "Printer, do you want to get one of them blown up and I'll do the next? Jake can roll his up. Or Jack can help, if he's actually gone to Charms class this year at all." He gave his peer a narrow look, seeming quite suspicious of Jack.

Snow
Dressed in a nice winter cloak that reached down to his knees, Alan would step out of the castle, giving a look around the grounds as he found the normally green tufts of grass covered in a thick layer of snow. It would crunch with each step as the snow gave away under his boots as he took one step after the other until he saw a bunch of his friends outside. He quickly fastened his steps as Tiger hopped after him, smart enough to only place his paws where Alan had flattened the snow with his boots, before coming to a halt when he they reached the group.
"Hey!" chirped Alan, greeting his friends with a bright smile, accessing the situation more or less before curiously inquiring, "What are you guys up to?" he had not seen them since before the holidays, so it was refreshing to see them again finally. "How were your holidays?" he added as he adjusted a beanie that rested atop of his head to keep his hair dry and ears warm. The way back to school had been a little turbulent for Alan but he was glad to finally be here. Though what happened in the compartment still left him with a lot of unanswered questions, though now was hardly the time to confuse his thoughts with such things. He had friends to greet now that they were back at Hogwarts!
