Dusk had fallen. Students had begun to go to dinner, but Anja wasn’t hungry. She had other plans, and they didn’t involve pretending to be happy for everyone else.
Anja had decided to take a lantern across the grounds to the cabins beside the Black Lake. She hurried along, careful not to be seen by anyone. She wanted to have this night alone, to give herself some time to puzzle over the favour her father had called in. The light of her lantern reflected over the clear waters of the lake, and remembering the there own common room was beneath, she blew out the lantern, incase she would be seen by someone below. It was unlikely, but she was more and more paranoid every day.
Finally, her rushed footsteps stopped as she arrived at the cabins. Looking around, she tried to pick the one least likely to be visited by a student or teacher. Augurey seemed like a good choice — weren’t they supposed to be harbingers of bad luck? She opened the door, then latched it as soon as she was inside. The cabin was enormous on the inside, and fully furnished. The colour scheme in this cabin was muted, full of the soft greys and darker browns of an augurey. Plopping the lantern down on the nearest table, Anja shut all the curtains and made sure that every single window was locked.
Taking out the notebook she’d placed in her satchel, she stared at the favour her father had written down for her. He’d reached his stick-like arms through that bars of his cell and grasped around for the notebook placed on the floor just outside. Anja had nudged it towards him with her toe, along with Muggle pen she’d been given by a guard. Her father had scratched out in shaky handwriting his exact wishes. She threw the book down onto the table and sat down after it. Covering the page with her hand, she lay her head on the table, her hair fanning out around her.
She hoped no one would find her.

Anja looked up suddenly, scraping the items on the table into her arms. In the doorway, there stood a girl, about her age. Her bright pink hair stood out against the wood walls, and the marks of tears flowed down her face. Even so, Anja felt no sympathy for her. She had the tenacity to enter the cabin, unannounced. Besides, Anja was sure she had locked the door when she entered.
"Who the hell are you?" she said. She did not yell, but her tone was not expressionless. A malignant note laced the short sentence, and as she spoke, she pulled her wand from her robes. Stalking up to where the girl stood with long strides, Anja held out her wand. Its tip was dangerously close to the girl's throat. For a moment, Anja wished she had the pocket knife her father had given her years ago — she was much more secure with how it moved and she could control it fully — but now she had a wand. She was a witch. She knew how to use it.
Anja narrowed her eyes. She uttered a different question, one that would probably get more answers. "What are you doing here?" Once again, her tone conveyed malice, and she cocked her head to the side, waiting for an answer.
