Ever since her Hogwarts letter had arrived, her mother had been congratulating her and her father had been sending her letters full of anecdotes from his time as a Slytherin. Naturally, Anja knew she'd be a Slytherin, but that didn't stop her running over her values again and again as the First Years took the boats across the lake to the castle. Ambition. Cunning. Self-preservation.
As she stood in the crowd of fellow students, she tuned out the teacher at the front calling out names. Suddenly, she was brought back to attention by a cry of "Murtaja, Anja!" She did her best to mask her expression and relax her body, but that did nothing but provide an image.
She stepped up and sat on the stool. The hat was placed upon her head, and she thought passingly about how it would likely ruin her carefully pulled back hair.
No amount of psychological preparation could have helped her with her surprise when she heard a crooning voice in her ear. "Well, well, well. Another Pureblood, I see." Despite knowing no one else could hear the hat, she shivered involuntarily. "There is a lot of ambition I see there. Yes, yes, and pride too. A good sense of self-preservation and a flair for chaos. Is that truly what you are, Anja?" Was it? Or was she better than your average Pureblood? "Yes, perhaps you are," the hat continued, "I sense acceptance. You do not mind what someone's blood is, do you? And you are creative. You have a need for knowledge." Yes, she did. But not for a purely academic reason. With knowledge comes power, and power gets you places. "Well, if you continue like that, I suppose you're not a Ravenclaw."
The hat paused. "Better be SLYTHERIN!"

Whatever Rebekah's imagination had dreamt up while she awaited the days leading up to leaving for Hogwarts, what the castle would look like and those residing within, it didn't even come close to what dazzled her eyes the moment the large pair of doors opened to reveal the Great Hall. Swallowed by the sea of fellow first years, Bekah turned her head from side to side trying to take in everything at once. The smell, sounds, sights, it was all dizzying. Brown eyes lifted to the ceiling, pausing to gawk at the floating candles that dotted the space above the students and staff. Sure, she had seen movies and read books about magical, mystical places but seeing it first hand, REAL. Well, that was another matter altogether.
Bringing her gaze back down to the room she followed closely along with the others as they were shuffled forward further and further into the room. A couple elbows prodded at her side as she settled in closer within the crowd of first years. There was a dull roar of conversation until finally the headmaster's voice silenced the room. Bekah, still in slight shock at the magical world, gave another long look around her, eyes sparkling with curiosity as she finally rounded them back to focus on the stool not too far off from the group. An odd sight greeted her as a tattered old looking hat began to speak then sing. Her mouth hung open slightly before closing as she noticed the look it had warranted from one of her peers standing shoulder to shoulder with her. "Sorry, I just-" SHH, they hushed her with a finger to their lips. Pressing her lips together, brows pulling together on her forehead, Bekah turned to the hat as names began ringing out through the hall.
As more and more students were called forth to be sorted, each time making Rebekah cheer as she got caught up with all the celebrating each table seemed to be doing as they gained new members. It reminded her of home and being split up into teams on the field during P.E. Adrenaline surged through the young girl's veins as she awaited her turn. "I can't wait for my turn... How do you think it works? The hat?" She leaned in closer to to the student on her other side and whispered. Before she could get a response her named had been called. Too excited to get a reply, she pushed past the two rows of students in front of her and hopped up onto the stool. Her mother might not have been too happy at her eagerness to thrust herself on a stool and have a dingy old hat tossed upon her head buuuut... she wasn't here now was she? Beaming at the headmaster and the eyes that stared up at her from the tables, Bekah bit at her lower lip to keep from laughing.
The leathery... thing... settled on her head and slipped down her forehead, covering her vision. She was far too excited to let it bother her and instead tucked her feet against the rungs of the stool to keep from jittering off. "I see quite a lot of energy radiating from you... yes... interesting..." the voice made Bekah yelp, partially from shock and a little out of sheer nerve. Should she reply back? Blinking under the hat, she tilted her head slightly. "Adventurous yes... and courageous but a kindness that is found in abundance by your new housemates... yes yes, you'll fit right in I believe. HUFFLEPUFF!"
As the house left the hat's... lips?-flaps?- An eruption of noise came from a house emblazoned by yellows and golds drawing Bekah over to their table, almost tumbling down the stairs in her haste.

Since Grant's going next I will take one of the slots of the NPCs
Staring around seemed to be all Grant had been doing for a while now. He began with staring around in Diagon Alley, then the shops, then at Hogwarts itself, and now in the Great Hall. He had to absorb it all to write back home about (prove to his uncle he was still alright), and also to take in himself. Grant took a seat along with all the other newly shuffled in students, next glancing more specifically at the assigned tables. He had been hearing a lot about the House System in his time here. It dictated your whole future, apparently!
There didn't seem to be a very bad one, though it depended on who you asked about Slytherin. Still, Grant's hard working uncle had always impressed judging anyone for their own sake and not some label and he figured that had to still work here too, right? The Head Master speaking to everyone drew Grant's attention from his thoughts, as well as a few of the other students getting called up to begin with being Sorted.
Grant was very glad he hadn't been first to sit under the hat that...seemed fine all in all. He knew what he was just been thinking about prejudging but it was hard not to prejudge that! As he was thinking through this, a girl nudged him, excitedly speaking on how she couldn't wait.
Her enthusiasm, of even that level, was infectious, and Grant couldn't help grinning back, about to answer when her name was called. Rebekah. He knew he couldn't probably remember every student of his year here, but he filed hers away to begin trying as well as some of the others he had caught.
He watched the process again, surprised when his name was next!
Standing up, Grant followed suit up the steps and sat down. "Um...hello", he wasn't sure if he should greet the hat, but he did.
"Probably not Slytherin with that attitude, but I get ahead of myself, just sit still", the hat had settled and began. "Hmm another adventurer, though not for the glory of it all...interesting...still I wonder how far it goes...uh huh". He...it...spoke like Grant was answering it but he wasn't.
"You might be Gryffindor, but you're actually too cautious with the life threatening danger and all, when you remember, and I'm thinking, yes and with that kind of once you've made a friend you've made a friend attitude....ah of course, and you're Charlotte Bowson's son! Like her, I say you are another Hufflepuff!"
Grant was subjected to the similar burst of yellow and whoosh off to the table all while his head was reeling at the hat having known his mother (and of course stating her maiden name she would have had while at school). He glanced back, wanting to now as it everything his uncle wouldn't talk about, but the hat was busy sorting the next student. So instead, Grant turned back to his table.

Melody stood at the front of the hall, gaping with her blue eyes wide as she took the 'greatness' in. She had heard from her parents before how amazing it was, but usually had shrugged it off and thought it was just like any other school. But no, candles hung from the ceiling, which she looked up to see was the exact color of what the sky had been outside. She wasn't usually overwhelmed, or almost.. frightened, but the room really was amazing, and just as grand as the man standing in front of the rows of tables.
Still staring, Melody listened to the man speak, loud, and directing. As it turned out, he was the headmaster, which didn't surprise Melody much, what was better than an intimidating wizard clad in armor to run a school? She ran her fingers along the hem of her fresh black robes, which she had put on shortly before exiting the train. She stood peeking out from behind several other first years, trying to get a better glimpse of everything. The rows of tables were filled with students, with empty plates and goblets before them.
The tattered old hat that sat on a stool before them began to sing, of things deeper than the oceans. Melody shivered as she listened to the Sorting Hat, for his words were meaningful. And just like that, the song was over, and everyone started to clap, so Melody thought it would be best to join in. She applauded her sweaty hands and watched the headmaster, who held a long scroll.
One by one names were called, and the line of students began to get shorter. Each person would go up and put on the hat, which shortly after would shout out a house. Melody wondered what she would be placed in, her family had all been Gryffindors for as far back as her family tree went. But she wondered if she would be placed in Slytherin, it seemed that lots of people who looked as moody as her sat at that table, but not all of them.
After long last, Melody's name was called, loud and clear. "Melody Rathburn!" The headmaster said. Melody could feel her stomach almost drop out of her body, and dread fill every inch of it. She stumbled forward out of the line, feeling all eyes on her. Well, all, that is, except for a few Slytherins who were focused rather intently on their plates before them.
Melody walked forward between two tables, shoes hitting the hard, cold floor. Her face was bright red, and she could feel heat rising to it. She walked up to where the headmaster was standing, and peered at his gray beard and thick locks of hair. He sent her a welcoming smile, she nodded meekly before sitting down on the stool, feeling her heart beat rapidly, and for a moment she wondered if the entire Great Hall could hear it. Badum. Badum.
Well.. you're a tricky one, aren't you? A voice inside Melody's head sounded, making her squeak and jump, well don't be frightened. At least I know you're not a Gryffindor. I see ambition, yes, but I see that ambition to have companions, yes? Loyal companions by your side.. I see your family.. Slytherin, shall it be? No. "HUFFLEPUFF!"
The hat shouted loudly, the tear in its fabric forming a mouth. Melody jumped once more, heart thundering, and the Sorting Hat was removed from her head, finally. She practically bolted across the room to the table that was waving to her, wearing robes with yellow badges and a badger on the front. She flopped down next to a curly haired girl and breathed a sigh of relief that her take in the ceremony was over. She turned to the girl and shot her a small smile.
"Hullo," Melody greeted her cautiously, "I'm Melody. What's your name?"

When her name was called, Vivian sashayed to the front of the queue. If she was being honest, she didn't feel scared at all. On the contrary, as ever, she felt happy and vaguely confident.
That all changed when she saw the hat. It might have been the most disgusting thing she'd seen in her life. It was grosser than the debris she found on the classroom floor when she was given detention for breaking the four-hundred euro smoothie-mixer (accidentally!). It was grosser than the dung she saw on the side of the road when their rented Merc broke down while they were on holidays in Arizona. It was literally the ratchetest thing she'd seen in her life. It looked a gazillion years old; well, a thousand at least. They didn't even bother to clean it; it was all dusty and musty and just generally rank. The gap in the middle of it from which the voice came looked like one of the gaps of the rocks on Salthill Beach that fat orange rats ran about through.
Reluctantly, she sat down as the hat was lowered onto her head. She wore a very visible grimace and let out an 'ughhh sound when it touched her pristine hair.
Let's see... it whispered into her ear, Creativity, exuberance, a certain lust for life, yes... Ambition, to an extent, but is it...? Not the brightest, but not nearly as dim as some would paint you out to be... a certain self-absorption, but there is potential for more, for something better. But the exuberance, the zest, the need for attention, the self-confidence... Well, better be GRYFFINDOR!
With that, Vivian tore the hat off her head, very glad to get it away from her precious locks. She sassily blew a kiss towards her new house-table and sat down beside her new housemates.

Canelle walked into the large room. Everything amazed her. Candles were flying above her, she knew it was magic. Everything in the castle was magical to her and she was just looking forward to the classes and learning magic. Learn how to use a magic wand and make potions. She was excited just thinking about it, although she was a quiet person by nature.
Seeing all the upperclassmen looking at her and her fellow first-year students, the girl looked down. She was very shy and was afraid that someone would see that she was embarrassed and blushing. She was stressed at the thought of going under the magic hat and knowing her house. Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, certainly.
When Canelle heard his name, she was petrified. She barely managed to walk to the hat, feeling her heart pounding in her chest. She was terrified. She approached slowly but sped up when she noticed all the stares on her. She had to get it over with.
She sat down and let the hat be placed on her head. The suspense was great and the girl was anxious to know the verdict. Then the hat screamed:
-Gryffindor!
She got up and hurried to her table. Gryffindor? She hadn't expected it. Maybe she belonged there, but she didn't have any of the required qualities. She was anything but brave. She shook her head to clear her thoughts. Now was not the time to think about it.

The Great Hall was HUGE.
Kenna didn't think she'd ever been in a room this big in her life. And somehow, even as large as it was, it was teeming with people. Students, decked in black robes, filled the long tables that ran down the center of the hall. Teachers, in more colorful apparel, sat along the high table at the front of the room. Kenna gulped, unsure what to do with herself in front of so many, MANY people. It seemed there were more people in this one room than on all of Barra! She felt at once claustrophobic and adrift in a sea of strangers. Her brown eyes were wide with nerves and awe as she kept scanning the room, seeing someone or something new with every pass she made. She couldn't stop staring if she tried.
After a few minutes of gawking, Kenna realized that the headmaster was speaking. She tried to focus on his words. He was introducing all the heads of house, but their names just went in one ear and out the other. Now he was introducing a hat, of all things. Of course, her parents had told her about the Sorting Hat, but she still didn't really understand how a hat was supposed to decide which house they belonged in. But then, the hat began to sing.
It was quite an eerie song, really. Captivating, but a little frightening. It told the history of Hogwarts and the four houses. Brave Gryffindor, that sounded nice. But so too did just and loyal Hufflepuff, and the ready wit of Ravenclaw. The only one that didn't sound very appealing was Slytherin. Use any means to achieve their ends? No, thank you! They sounded like a bunch of bullies to Kenna. And if there was anything Kenna hated, it was bullies.
The line of students waiting to be sorted seemed to go on forever. How could there be so many students in a school at once? To be sure, the castle was enormous. But still, it was so much to keep track of, so much to organize! Kenna didn't envy the Headmaster's job.
After what felt like an eternity, Kenna was finally near the front of the line. The girl before her was declared a Gryffindor, and went to join their table, looking a bit bemused.
"Kenna MacNeil!"
Oh no. That was her. It was her turn. Kenna wiped suddenly sweaty palms on her robes, and stepped forward to the stool. What if the hat didn't like her? What if it couldn't decide? Would she just sit here forever looking like a complete numpty? She cast a nervous glance up at the headmaster, who gave an encouraging nod. Gulping again, Kenna sat on the stool and the hat was lowered onto her head.
It was so big that it fell down to her nose and covered her vision entirely. The darkness was oddly comforting, though. At least now she couldn't see the hundreds of students staring at her, waiting for the hat's verdict.
"Ahhh, yes..." mused the hat. Kenna almost jumped out of her seat to hear it talking to her. She hadn't heard that for any of the other students being Sorted. She supposed it must be speaking inside her head, then. She wasn't sure if it was better to have no one hear what the hat said, or to feel as though she'd gone mad and was hearing voices...
"An inquisitive nature... thirsting for knowledge and adventure, but neither fame nor acclaim..." Kenna wasn't entirely sure what that meant, nor whether it was a good or bad thing. She felt as though the hat were telling her riddles. She felt, rather than heard, the hat chuckle at that. "Straight-forward, yes. No roundaboutation or exaggeration here. Well then, it must be... HUFFLEPUFF!"
The last word rang in Kenna's ears, and she knew at once that it had been said aloud. The hat was pulled off her head, and now she could see and hear the cheers from the table decked in yellow. Kenna blushed and grinned. She had never had anyone cheer for her before. Beyond her parents, she had never even had anyone want her to join them before. Kenna didn't care which house she was put in, so long as they welcomed her like that.

Adonis walked into the great hall and had a seat, the whole thing astounded him. He looked over at his friend, lillian and could tell she was nervous as him. Adonis listened carefully to the headmaster speak, introducing all the teachers yet he was still intimidated. this all was a lot to take in. He also didn't expect this many students to be here at all. Afterall, he was told this was more like a small magic boarding school. The talking had he was told about, sang a song. he actually quite enjoyed it, as seeing a talking hat in itself is amazing.
He watched as different students were called up, and went to there houses with the assorted colors. After a little bit, Lillian was called up and sorted into gryffindor. While the gryffindor table cheered, so did Adonis. He had remembered ho she said she didn't think she would be gryffindor, and that led him to giggle- Until he was interrupted.
``ADONIS CAMPBELLE!``
adonis stood up, extremely nervous and walked over to the chair and sat. The hat was placed down unto his head, pushing his curls over his eyes. adonis remembered his plan and whispered quietly to the hat. ``um, hat sir? you wouldn't mind if you would-`` He was interrupted once again by the booming sound of the hat,
adonis felt a dreadful feeling in his gut, since he didn't even get to try his plan. But that feeling soon vanished once the hat was removed, and the hufflepuff table cheered for him. He walked towards the table and sat down.

Her heart was racing fast, she felt almost sick while she was waiting to cross the majestic door that was in front of her... Okay Mary you have to calm down she silently tells herself this mantra. She took a look at all the girls and boys that were there next to her, they seem to know eachother for quite a long time. She wanted to be friends with someone so badly, just to deal this moment together.
After what it felt an year, finally the door opens and she was amazed by what she could see! A giant room full of students, great walls covered with enormous live paintings, tables that were extremely long, covered of any kind of food... Finally she was here, her dream coming true.
While she walked through the tables, she noticed that all the students were clapping their hands as to welcome their new potential classmates. Her hands were shaking so badly that a student near her noticed it "Hey calm down, I'm excited and terrified at the same time like you... So take a deep breath and enjoy this ceremony" the girl smiled at her. "Thank you so much, I feel just a bit relieved now." Mary was really thankful and she listened to the girl's advice "You're welcome!" said the girl winking at Mary.
Once the group reached the back of the room, where all the teachers and the Headmaster were attending them, Mary was excited at the idea that she was going to be sorted. She waited not so long until she heard "Mary Elizabeth Fortunato!". Her heart did a back flip. She walked towards the chair, where the talking hat was waiting for her and she sat down. "Aha! Another Fortunato I see... Hmm difficult, very difficult... Your father was a Slytherin, your brother a Griffindor, and your sister an Hufflepuff... Mmh yeah but let's see what you've got... Oh loyalty I see and a little bit of ambition... You love to make new friend and you're kind... Mmh yes..." the hat went on like that for a while, when he suddenly exclaimed "Better be HUFFLEPUFF!"
Finally Mary exhaled, she didn't notice that she was holding her breath all that time. She was so happy, she exactly wanted to be a Hufflepuff like her sister!

Momoji was a little nervous as she entered the great hall She had stumbled so much she couldn't help being the last one who came in. Holding a stuffed brown bear close to her chest she looked around surprise and shock crossing her face. She had thought she had seen something already amazing A castle with the water and the night sky. It had been such a beautiful site for her. but now she was inside and seeing the sky again. With floating candles above her. She was in a state of disbelief. Looking at the tables on either side as the group had moved forward. She kept tripping over her own feet as she moved with them before she stopped looking up. She listened quietly to the headmaster's words. The introductions and then felt a little dumbfounded as she listened to a talking hat. But once that shock faded she thought about what the hat had said. She knew she was smart. not in a boasting way but just for a fact. At least when it came to muggle things. She had been attending a gifted school most of her life and was already doing college courses before her Hogwarts letter had arrived. Now she felt like she was starting all over again discovering a whole new world of knowledge. She didn't really feel brave or daring. She didn't have a lot of nerves either considering how scared she was but even though it was scary she was excited. She just didn't know what she belonged to. Slowly one by one kid went onto the stage and sat before the school before the hat was put on She patiently waited till her name was called.
Shyly she had to make her way from the back up to the chair looking more and more nervous. She had to take a long deep breath and let it out slowly as she walked up the few steps and looked up at the headmaster before her. He smiled at her and encouraged her to sit down. Hugging her bear even tighter for a moment before letting go with one arm she held the stool and had to climb on top of it. Her smallness was a bit of a problem sometimes. When she was settled holding her bear in her lap she looked at the tables of the waiting kids. The people with green and silver all the way to the people in scarlet and gold she swallowed feeling her stomach flip flop before looking up nervously right before the hat come down and covered her entire face.
Its so dark Momoji thought before jumping a little. Hmm interesting mmm yess... She heard the voice say but not really say it was more like a thought had entered her head that wasnt her own. Sort of like a little voice in the back of your head but louder and not her own.
whats interesting? She thought to herself and was about to speak out loud when the voice started again.
Your mind of course! Very interesting indeed. Intelligence yes... And a thirst to use it for others! I can see you've had a hard road in your life's journey thus far. And perhaps more to come in your future I can see you rising to meet that challenge eventually... So where to put you...
How can-... Oh, I see... She realized he could see her mind completely and felt another wave of nervousness she didn't quite like the idea of someone poking about in her head. Even if it was a magical hat.
Not to worry. I wouldn't go telling everyone your secrets like your thinking. Everything is private. Hmmm... It seemed the hat was finding it hard to decide what house Momiji belonged in. She sat there quietly rubbing her bear's paw relieved after it calmed her worries. She continued listening to the hmm's an interesting and other muttering's the hat seemed to be making in her head. She had so many questions that wanted answers but she had the feeling this hat wouldn't be able to answer a single one. The knowledge it knew came from her head she suspected but she couldn't help but wonder if her biological parents had gone through this too or had they just been muggles too. It had been several minutes and Momoji couldn't help but wonder why it was taking so long when others seemed to be named so easily.
Hmm... Yes, you would do well in there better be... "Hufflepuff!"
The last word was shouted out loud and loud cheering from the black and yellow's table especially. She blinked a little getting used to being able to see again before sliding off and then proceeding to trip down the steps on the way to her house. She blushed up a storm as she took her seat thanking those who helped her up quietly.
