Stir-up Sunday
{ PV to @Robyn Finley }
Early morning, 22nd November 2020
It was well after curfew - or perhaps well before the morning curfew, depending which way you looked at it. It must have been past three in the morning, she had kind of lost track in all honesty. Jeger was curled up near a roaring fire in the fireplace. On the table in front of Hjørdis, a thick book lay open. The pages had a variety of different handwritings, not necessarily in English. But it was clear that there was a recipe on the page, with some additional notes and changes as the years went on.
The head of Slytherin thumbed through the pages, looking for the one that she desired. Her eyes scanned the quiet room, till they fell onto some barrels. She pondered for a few moments, contemplating what exactly she wanted to do.
There was only one reason she was here. Well, three reasons. The first was that she already knew she would not get much sleep this evening. Instead of laying hopelessly in bed, just tossing and turning, she figured she should do something with her time. Being productive inspired her. She hated sitting idly around. Since sleep evaded her, it only made sense to find something else to do. As such, did not even bother to go to bed and instead threw on a large blue sweater, a pair of black leggings and some black boots with heels. The second reason was that she enjoyed baking. It was something she found very relaxing and therapeutic. It made her feel better whenever she felt stressed and it was a nice way to also cheer up others. Who did not love baked goods? And the third and final reason was that she was partially hungry. A midnight snack seemed like a great idea at the same time.
And that was how Hjørdis wound up in the kitchens in the middle of the night, staring into a large book. She tugged on the sleeves of her sweater, snuggling into it. It was definitely oversized but it allowed her to feel more comfortable, wrapped around in the excess material. It was warm, perfect for the very cold November nights.
Her hair had one thin plait on the left-hand side before being pulled into a ponytail to keep her it off her face as she cooked. Her face had make-up on it, though there was a layer of foundation, a bit of eyeliner, a coat of mascara and a neutral lipstick. Studs in her ears and a couple of rings on her fingers. For the middle of the night, she was perhaps rather overdressed. However, for those that knew her, they would know that this was very much normal for her.
Hjørdis had been in the kitchen - with her cat - for a few hours now. She arrived shortly after checking on the students', some time past curfew. Since then, she had boiled a pan with an orange in it, letting it simmer for two hours before boiling another pan with sugar, cinnamon and then the orange for over an hour and half. There was some greasing, stirring, mixing and so forth. On the side of the table, there was a covered pan simmering gently on the heat. It had been there for some hours.
At this point, she was a good way through the process but she had a couple of hours left and she was hungry. She flipped through the pages, till she landed on a recipe that she liked. An apple pie. It had been a while since she had made pie. That seemed like a good idea. Immediately, she pushed herself up, moving to collect some eggs, sugar, flour, baking powder, vanilla and apples. Hjørdis busied herself in gathering the ingredients she required, as well as some utensils. Whilst she was moving around the kitchen, she spotted the door opening.

It had been almost two months into her time at Hogwarts and she was finally feeling fully settled into the castle. It was a strange old home that she still had unresolved feelings about. While there had been an incredible amount of growth done during her time, she had stifled herself a lot as well. The walls carried scars of various fights with her brother throughout the castle, a remembrance of cozy hideaways where she would sneak her lunch out from the Great Hall when it would get to overwhelming. Even her favorite spot at the library had been preserved after all those years. The difference in how she felt then to now, being able to work here and see the children developing around the same age that she was gave her a lot of joy. There were students that actually came to her wanting her guidance, wanting her advice. It was never something she could've imagined for herself and yet it was fulfilling a part of her that she didn't know was empty.
After so many years of attempting to find the right place it be, it had seemed to find her instead.
There was one place that she hadn't been able to venture during her time at Hogwarts, somewhere students weren't really allowed to go and that was the kitchens. However, it was quite late and she had grown quite hungry from her work around the library. She was hoping just to pop in and grab a snack from somewhere and then head back to work. It was that awkward time in the day where it had grown too late to really go back and get rest before she had to be here the next day. It would just be a long couple days for her, she would probably go home early the next day to give herself some rest. Luckily she had left Artemis at home to herself that day, or else she really wouldn't know what to do with her. The tiny hungry owl really could not be trusted in a kitchen.
Eventually she was able to meander her way to make it to the basements where the kitchens were, and paused in front of the door. What if she wasn't allowed here? She couldn't help but let out a small giggle, even as an adult that worked here she was worried about being caught by some Professor or Prefect or something that would send her back to bed. Old habits truly do die hard. Slowly she opened the door and peeked in to see who all, if anyone was in there, and her eyes landed on someone she really didn't expect. A Head of House. The one of Slytherin specifically.
Robyn dragged herself into the room, gently closing the door behind her. "Ah, I'm sorry to interrupt you Ms. Jensen." The smells seem to hit her all at once as she moved her focus to see all that was going on, seemingly of her doing. "Although... perhaps we are here for the similar reasons. I'm Robyn, in case you uh, don't remember." She hadn't had much interaction with the other staff when she first started besides basic introductions, and she was still just starting to branch out to get to know them. For some reason, she still expected the other staff to not even know she existed half the time.

Disappointing. Her gaze fell on the newest arrival to the room, with a neutral expression on her face. But there was definitely a feeling of disappointment in her heart. For some reason, she had expected someone else. She was not offended by the interruption by any means, she just had a moment of hope that was quickly shattered. Taking in the face, she pondered for a brief moment before connecting it to the name Robyn Finley, the librarian.
Hjørdis waved her hand in the air, dismissing her apology as there was no need really, "Nora," She replied, introducing herself in a slightly more casual manner in response - even though she already knew Robyn's name. It was not really something she did before she started working here but it was almost a habit now. Everyone seemed to be so casual, insistent on calling each other by first names as though they were friends instantly. It was a little odd but after working here for some time, she seemed to do it too, "And that little fellow is Jeger," She continued, indicating to the bengal still asleep by the fireplace.
"Are you looking for leftovers or did you intend on making something?" She asked, wondering if the librarian had any plans. From what she had heard, this was the woman who could not be trusted to look after herself. Alright, that was definitely harsher than what she actually heard. A lot harsher. The exact words were something stupidly nice, of course. But she was also a little salty about the whole thing so that was the thought she was going with.
But nonetheless, she would continue, "I'm not sure if there is any leftovers or snacks but I was actually just about to make an apple pie, if you wanted some?" Hjørdis had legitimately not bothered to check for leftovers. That would have been a much faster way of reducing her hunger but she enjoyed cooking and baking too much to do that.
As she spoke, she nodded towards the ingredients that she was gathering on the table in front of her as though to show her that she was actually making them. The giant book also lay open next to them, which contained what would like the recipe, though all of the words were not necessarily in English. She was not actually reading the recipe but she took a look at the book for inspiration. A quick cast over the page reminded her of what she needed and that was enough. It was clear that it would take a little while for the pie to be done, however, but Hjørdis started to work on it - beating the egg whites, sugar, vanilla and baking powder together.
"So... how are you finding it here at Hogwarts?" She asked, attempting to make conversation. This was really not something that came naturally to her but she felt the need to try. At the very least, Robyn's housemate would likely appreciate it if Hjørdis did not outright ignore her or was remotely nice. This was very much one of those times where she felt like that was the case and that it was worth trying to do. Besides, keep your friends close and your enemies closer, they say. Whilst she did not know which one Robyn was yet, it looked like she might find out which one she would become soon.

Neutrality was certainly better than an immediate distaste, though Robyn hadn't made a poor impression (to her knowledge) on any of the other staff. A Head of House that was dating the person that she was currently living with would certainly be a bad place to start that trend. With a short nod of a greeting, eyes shifted through the room to fully take in all that was happening. Including the presence of an adorable cat, though his place in the kitchen was a bit suspect. Wasn't it a tad unsanitary for animals to be in a place of cooking? Artemis certainly wasn't allowed in the kitchen at Doc's place, but with a flying animal that was a bit harder to control. Especially since Robyn wasn't keen on locking her up all too often. Nora was in the throes of cooking and Robyn suddenly felt like all too much of an intrusion. A quick quest for a late night snack now coming with a side of small talk and walking on glass. "Ah, I was probably just going to whip up a quick snack. A sandwich or something of the like. I didn't mean to intrude."
Even with the statement she wandered further into the kitchens, enticed by the sweet smells that surrounded her. Despite her mother's general disdain for Robyn growing up, the food that she had made as she grew up always had a soft spot in her heart. While the woman could be devilish her food was that of angels. Especially when it came to baking. A small pang in her heart longed for home, something she rarely felt. In fact it was not really a feeling that she had in years. It wasn't all bad after all even though that's all Robyn saw in her memories. "Is there anything I could help with? I must say I'm no baker but I'm not entirely useless." Ah yes, what a great sentence for a staff member of Hogwarts to utter. An assurance that she was not the most useless person. Her hands were folded in front of her as if a child waiting for direction.
Her eyes for a moment stopped wandering and returned to the person she was supposed to be having a conversation with. "Its a bit weird, to be honest. Coming back to Hogwarts as a member of the staff rather than a student. I only graduated about ten years ago from here. I'm excited to be back though. Especially as the librarian it was my favorite place when I went here and being able to become the keeper of the books is something I enjoy. I must say, the added benefit of knowing what's in the Restricted Section satisfies something in me I thought would never have an answer. How long have you been working here?" Nora looked about the same age as Robyn, perhaps there were more similarities than differences to be found in the Head of House.

"It's fine," Hjørdis replied in a matter-of-fact tone, not really bothered by the company. It was not an intrusion by any means. Of course, she could have probably said more but it was late, and she really did not want to convince someone it was fine - especially after noticing the librarian walk further in. Her actions made it seem like the words were accepted nonetheless.
Silently, she continued to gather the ingredients and utensils. Cracking a few eggs into a bowl, she disposed of the shells and started to beat the eggs with a whisk. Her eyebrow quirked slightly for a split second before returning back to normal when she heard Finley's offer for help. Unexpected after her words but the words and her actions did not seem to be aligned. "Hm," She paused for a second in thought, wondering what task to actually give to her. It was a little hard to split up the tasks when most of them were just mixing ingredients in a bowl, "Oh, perhaps you could peel and dice the apples if you don't mind?" She offered, as she nodded her head to motion towards the apples on the side. There were three red apples there. That was remotely simple enough right? Though... given how 'confidently' she said her piece, Hjørdis could not help but wonder if giving her a knife was the best option. Perhaps Finley should do the mixing... Ah wells, too late now. She had asked.
Hearing about her experience, though brief, was the most exciting part of the conversation so far. It was interesting at the very least. Hjørdis had to make a lot of small talk over the years, getting used to that. But she did not really enjoy it. She preferred to understand people and there was a hint of Finley's background and upbringing in her words as she spoke about the library. "I must admit that the extensive library here is certainly a bonus," Hjørdis replied, acknowledging that. She spent quite a bit of time in the library - or had borrowed several books in her tenure. Reading was one of the few hobbies she actually enjoyed, after all, "It's been just over two years for me now, which is not nearly enough to make a dent in the library's collection but hopefully if work calms down a little," She added.
Reading for pleasure sadly was a task she did not get to do very often. It was often put aside as something else came up. Hogwarts, after all, was not calm on most days. Every time she thought things might be a bit peaceful, it would simply just be the calm before the storm. One headache after another. This year, she was hopeful would start to be better. It had to. They had, at the very least, removed a few of the obstacles but she knew there was more to be done. However, this was neither the time nor the place to think of such matters. She was here to relax, think of happier things. Bake a Christmas pudding and eat some pie, "Two years isn't nearly enough to get a feel for the school, though," She admitted as she was aware that there always seemed to be something new. A new door that she was convinced was not there earlier, for instance or a new route to get somewhere, which was much faster than the one she had been taking previously.
Eyeballing how much sugar they needed, she put a little more into the bowl with a couple of teaspoons of vanilla essence once the eggs had been lightly beat and continued to stir the mixture, "Is it the same as you imagined it would be though?" She asked, wondering if the experience of being a student had given her different expectations or something. Most of the staff were likely unfamiliar faces for starters.
