It was always a good day when Joanie ditched her studying to walk, having to become actually productive had taken a good toll on her and finding a way to clear her head seemed impossible. Was there a spell to make your head not feel like a million griffins were squawking and flapping their wings LOUDLY over and over again?

She sat down on the floor, her back hitting the bricked wall, watching all the students walk by each other and talk. Focusing on the chatter definitely helped ease her mind, and she basked in the relief for a moment, rolling her eyes shut. Maybe the hard floor could be replaced with like, a giant pillow, but these conditions certainly worked well enough to nap in. She had very little reason to feel embarrassed, just the other day a student got his head whacked because he was sleeping in class, gave everyone a good laugh.

Still, it felt wrong to just be asleep in the middle of the Courtyard, so she cracked her eyes open and watched, holding her notebook close to her chest, exhaling at the wind hitting her face and pushing her bangs over her face.

Even now, watching everyone talk made her feel a bit sad. She had a hard time making friends, and the fact she was in Hogwarts and still struggled to talk to people said plenty. She was usually so extraverted, but everyone here seemed too cool to approach... she'd be lucky if she got an awkward smile at one of the kids from across the room.

On February 11th or so, Tory had sent her mother and owl. And owl very clearly stating that she seemed to be having the hands down worst winter possible. Because she was always ill, her homework was piling up, it was always cold in Scotland, she had made an enemy, and she was also constantly in a horrific mood, which didn’t make matters any better. Her mother had sent her a reply suggesting she go for a walk- and so she tried. And it turned into a fiasco. She tried again a week later, and this time it actually cleared her mind, and so it became a routine. Every week at some point, she forced herself outside.

Anyways, today, she was much too lazy to go around the grounds, and instead just sat in the courtyard. It was quite fun, people watching, and she enjoyed hearing older girls gossip and boys goof around. Plus, spring was slowly but surely coming and the air was crisp and clear, much to the liking of Tory. Things were really lightening up for her, the debate club, the fresher air, and she wasn’t ill anymore.

Then, she spotted her. Another lone wolf, sitting across the courtyard. She was a Hufflepuff, or at least Tory thought, she couldn’t really see. We all know your lonely, just go say hi Her subconscious debated You may be lonely, but don’t you like it like that? Cool people don’t have friends... At this, Tory snapped at herself. “How do you even know that- There’s no logic behind it either” Then she remembered she was speaking aloud and shut her mouth. Everybody probably heard that. Great, now they’ll all think I’m a lunatic! I better go reassure that other lonely person over there... She thought, pretending that was the real reason when she actually just wanted some actual human interaction. She forced herself to sit up, and made her way towards the still unnamed Hufflepuff? girl.

Smiling slightly, she said “Erm, hello there! I’m Tory and uh just for some reassurance, I swear I am not a lunatic.”

Joanie hadn't been expecting anyone to speak to her, per se, so when she heard someone speak, she nearly fell over due to being startled. Her eyes widened, looking up at the girl, her once agape mouth turning upwards into a smile. She wasn't sure if she was relieved that someone was speaking to her or if it was something else, but she was glad to have someone accompanying her - though, she knew not to get her hopes up, it could very well be a small interaction.

"Hi, hey- erm, I'm Joanie," She sat up, brushing her bangs out of her face, only for them to fall over her cheeks again. Stubborn things, she considered cutting them off. "Nice to meet you." She stood up to match her height, excited about having a new person to talk to - when was the last time she'd even held a conversation outside her own household?

"I don't think you're a lunatic, why would you be a lunatic? For... talking to me, or-" She furrowed her eyebrows, sticking her hands into her robe pockets. She checked this girl out, brown hair, warm, welcoming eyes - it seemed fair enough, she was a Gryffindor too, judging by the badge on her robe. The Gryffindors here were always so... powerful, if that made any sense. Loud, brash, proud, it always intimidated her. "So... what's the occasion?"

"I don't think you're a lunatic, why would you be a lunatic? For...talking to me, or-" The girl (Tory had just learned her name was Joanie) said, and Tory's eyebrows shot up. Frantically, she responded "No, no! For uh talking to myself over there, thought it would be a good idea to come and tell you I didn't belong in the loony bin." Tory then looked into her eyes and read her like a good book, Joanie was intimidated, and she could ultimately tell. Reading people was her 'talent', and her only one, if anything.

"So...what's the occasion?" Joanie asked, and Tory just looked at the ground and thought for a second before looking back up at her and replying. "You looked lonely. And I was lonely to..." The 12 year old smiled a kind smile and tried her best to clarify she was the least courageous Gryffindor she knew. "And you know, I may be a Gryffindor, but I find them just as scary as you do. I don't even think I'm in the right house, truthfully."

Tory wasn't just saying that to make the Hufflepuff feel better- she, all in all, had no idea whatsoever why she was placed in Gryffindor. Her father had been a slythering slimy snake, and of course being a Gryffindor wasn't as big of a shocker as it was in the beginning of the year, but it still puzzled Tory.
