2021, Stage 2 Group B: Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff

Katrina was watching time run out. Sure, she hadn’t got too many hits, but the Curse was getting more and more of a threat. The reparifors would only benefit her for a matter of time, then she would either faint or get to a point that she couldn’t get a spell in. Calanthe on the other hand, was looking worse and worse. She’d been holding up, but she’d also been the target of most of the entire duel.

Maria managed to dodge Katrina’s fire spell, but Calanthe’s hit home. A pretty great tactic if she did say so herself. Though, most of the planning had so far not had an excuse to come into play. As Katrina was musing, she glanced over at Cal, just to see a fire spell hit her square in the chest. Her dueling partner fell, limp, to the floor. For the first time this duel, Katrina felt her mask drop, for just a split second, there was a look of panic and doubt and pain, but just as quickly, the mask returned and she looked deadly and angry.

As Calanthe was carried away, Katrina made a vow to check on her as soon as the duel was over. Well, she would likely also need the Hospital Wing after this, but she made the silent vow anyway. The instant she heard the word to continue, Katrina leapt into action. There was no way she was going down easily.

Two duellists, two casts, one hit!

Katrina boldly forewent her own healing, taking on a riskier tactic in an attempt to buy herself a moment of peace. Her gambit paid off. While Maria opted for a trusty Flipendo, her target danced out of the way from the Knockback Jinx., then retaliated with a swift Expelliarmus. Through the air sailed twenty-nine centimeters of chestnut wood and snallygaster heartstring, tumbling out of the Hufflepuff's reach. Maria was disarmed, Katrina was moments away from potential unconsciousness, and their referee was watching with darting eyes and held breath.

Katrina was starting to feel the full force of the spell. Everything was sort of hazy and it felt hard to move. She was achy and her head was pounding. Snot wouldn't stop coming and there was a near constant itch in her nose. This was awful. But still, Katrina continued, she had to for her team and for Cal. Katrina saw Maria's incoming spell and ducked to the side, letting it glide on by. It was surreal. Everything in both slow motion and double speed. She felt sort of loopy and disconnected, the Curse of the Bogies was no joke.

Katrina shook her head, clearing her thoughts, and retaliated. The disarming charm hit home. Maria's wand went flying out of her hand and Katrina earned herself a moment of time. What to do? Heal up and get some more time? Or go for her defenseless opponent? Only time would tell.

Luck could only take you so far apparently. Of course Maria didn’t solely rely on it, but at the moment there was not much else she could do and she was almost running on fumes. Katrina managed to keep dodging her previous spells, clearly still powering through whatever discomfort the Curse of the Bogies inflicted upon her.

In their next exchange Maria had been too distracted by the fact that her Flipendo had missed, distracting her from Katrina’s attack. A force knocked her wand our of her hand, a sound of gurgled surprise jumping out of her throat. She heard it fall to the floor but her eyes never saw where it landed. If she wasn’t panicking before, now she definitely was. She was unarmed and probably half way to a trip to the Hospital Wing.

Maria Searches for her wand. She succeeds in retrieving it.

There was no room for risk. With Maria's wand out of reach and the Bogies curse closing in on Katrina, the witches opted for the most sensible courses of action: the Hufflepuff pursued her one means of offense, while the Gryffindor absorbed another dose of her healing capabilities. By the time the former reclaimed her wand, the latter had warded off unconsciousness and recovered a morsel of strength. Time was precious. Every action, every choice, played a part in who would be left standing by the end of this match. Autumn and Calanthe were surely being seen to in the hospital wing. Who would be joining them next...?

Maria's wand went flying out of her hand and Katrina found the strength within her to smile. It wasn't over yet. Now that she had a bit of time on her hands, it was the decision between going for an unarmed opponent and healing herself so she could do that in the future. She went with the latter, though the decision was significantly harder than usual due to her foggy mind.

The blue light descended over the Third Year, instantly clearing her mind and her sinuses. Katrina vowed to never take for granted her ability to heal herself. Now that she had a clear mind, she had one motive. To win.

Maria’s head whipped around, her eyes wide and frantic as she searched for her wand. In the background her mind was racing, adrenaline kicking in fast. Her attention was divided between finding her only means of protection and making sure she didn’t get blasted by another spell in the process.

Fortunately it seemed that no attack had been sent her way and she was able to grab her wand and compose herself once again. Unfortunately, that also meant that Kat healed herself again. This was taking much longer than expected. Nevertheless, both girls were holding on. But the question still hung in the air: who would give first? She wasn’t sure who, but Maria was going to try her best to make sure that it wasn’t her.

Surely no one could have predicted how this match would play out. Both the Gryffindor and Hufflepuff teams were driven by a powerful desire to redeem themselves, to recover from their former losses, and both battled arduously to do so. They gave all of their might, making for an unpredictable spectacle. It seemed, for a moment, that the duel was on the brink of closure. Maria was disarmed and Katrina had fired off a particularly menacing Incendio. The referee's face was illuminated by the passing flame. It shone in his eyes while he watched it sail by, lips parted, breath held. That blazing ball traveled with such ferocity and purpose that it appeared to be honed on its target, curving ever so slightly in midair, roaring towards Maria. It was a sublime cast, one sure to put an end to this... only, it didn't. For at the very last possible second, in a display of impossibly magnificent evasion, Maria Dodged.

In an uncharacteristically passionate expression of disbelief, the hand which wasn't holding Pericles' wand clutched his head. The Hufflepuff had followed with Fumos, spilling smoke across the stage, rapidly shrouding both duellists in a thick cloud. This caused their moderator some modicum of distress, forcing him to crouch and try to spy them beneath it. Sight could not be solely relied upon now. Onlookers would have to listen for incantations to know what was happening next, wait in apprehension for the telltale thud of a falling body.
