May the Tides of Change be Kind PV: Wren Closed

For whatever reason that had led Wren to trespass on the highest floor of the Owlery, it was unlikely that she would expect anyone else to be here. Not that it was against the rules, but the distant cooing of owls down below and the disturbing silence all around often dissuaded most from venturing too far. There were rumours that hags sometimes took up residence when no one was around, and there was a definite incident of a Dhampir attack that had occured where she was heading. Amid the student body’s unending gossip, warnings of this place would make themselves fondly known.

Nonetheless, some found repose in places such as this, where they were safe from the judgement of prying eyes. Whether or not this was what had led Wren to seek it out, she would find that it was occupied before she came.

There was little that would give away the fact that he was there. Unless she had the senses of a bloodhound, it was unlikely that his presence would be felt at all until she saw him. He was gazing out the windowed archway, leaning on his arms upon the concrete railing. The cold wind lapped gently through his hair as his transfixed his stare on the horizon. It was easy to assume that he was merely admiring the sun as it set, but he had his back facing her, and would not notice her arrival. Likewise she would not see what truly went on in his chaotic mind, a dangerous abyss to be lost within. This boy had a tendency to look beyond what was there, such that when he stared off into the distance, he looked instead to the ever looming void that lay within the cosmos. His name was Valentine, and he was a first year, just as she was.

The sound of shoes on stone echoed off the walls as Wren made her way into the Owlery. An envelope, piece of paper, ink, and quill were clamped in her hands as she ascended the tall tower. It had been a while since her first year had started and she'd been eager to send her brother a letter, but with everything going on she hadn't gotten a chance. The homework and lessons had been eating up her time, not to mention trying to get to know her fellow students. It was only a few minutes ago that she had gotten a chance to retreat from it all, though she knew that soon she'd be rushing off to her next class. The sounds of owls slowly became louder as she drew closer to the entrance, and she relished it. She missed the noises of the forest near her house and this was the closest thing so far as it had been too cold to go outside. Ignoring the shrill screeches and low hoots, Wren climbed the last couple steps and went inside.

Out of all the commotion of the Owlery, a small sigh managed the reach her ears. Not long ago, there had been a Dhampir attack and most students were staying away. It wasn't as if she was worried, but she hadn't been expecting anyone else to be up there. Nonetheless, a young boy, most likely a first year, standing in front of one of the windows. The crimson red on his robes announced that he was a Gryffindor as well. For a moment Wren stayed where she was, searching through her thoughts for any encounters they might have shared. More introductions, she thought when nothing came to mind. Hoping to avoid any awkward conversations, Wren silently moved over to the other window. The soft clink of the ink bottle as she set it down echoed off the walls, soon followed by the scratching of quill on paper as she began to write her letter.

I am so sorry that it took me this long to respond! I had a lot going on in the past couple weeks with school and family, so I didn't get a chance.
