Just like home
Maddie spooned some porridge into her mouth, slowly. She missed home. She didn't have friends there either, but at least her parents were there. She looked over her shoulder, at the large group of Hufflepuffs laughing and eating porridge. They looked like they were having a blast. Next to her, two chatty Slytherins were talking loudly. She wished she could join them.
Maddie was still trying to get over the fact that she was placed in slytherin. As a muggle-born, it was especially said to be rare. But Maddie trusted the sorting hat. It must be right. Its true, I was meant to be in slytherin. But why? Maddie said to herself. She yawned. She was exhausted after staying awake all night, unable to sleep with all the worried thoughts racing about her head.
Maddie took a sip of her orange juice. It wasn't all bad. One girl had said hi to her last night. But that definitely didn't count as a friend. But what did count as a friend? And how do I know? She thought. It was so confusing, social life. Probably why she had none at home.
This is just like home. Maddie thought, sighing. No friends, no fun.

"But there's a hope that's waiting for you in the dark, you should know you're beautiful just the way you are."

Just like home
Breakfast always felt like such an unnecessary formality of the day, but at least it was a little extra time to wake up and try to be prepared for the schedule ahead. Most of her mornings were spent studying and working on her notes for class, as well as her other numerous personal projects, as she was now. Book open at her side, the snake scrawled down a quick page or two of notes before pausing and looking about the table for something fast she could eat without having to totally shatter her pace.@Maddie Summers
Her pale eyes landed on one place of toast just past her reach, "Hey," she spoke to one, frankly solemn looking, girl with her porridge. When she girl didn't seem to hear her over the chatty girl to the other side of her, she raised her voice slightly, "Oi, you, first year." she made a small gesture trying to get the first years attention, "Pass the toast, please?" Illowy somewhat kept track of the first years in her house. She felt a small bit of responsibility over the young ones that might not know all the twists, turns, and dangers yet of the school; and she liked to think it was the older students' duty to help them.
Not that many had such a soft place for her in return. Illowy wasn't exactly the most approachable looking upperclassman. She was pale, especially in contrast with her dark hair and icy, pale blue eyes; it had been said more then once she had a gaze that felt like she was looking through you more then at you. The frosting on the cake was the black, marbled scars that stretched and curled over her shoulder and up her neck to her cheek; marking her as one of those few students who had been cursed when Slytherin house had been attacked the year prior. Not that she expected the first years to know about that. Despite such markings though, her looks and poise promised her to be quite the beauty when she grew up; until then, she was like a rose, only half awake.
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.
