2021, Stage 2 Group B: Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff

When Maria saw that Kat healed Calanthe again, she thought she was going to cry, or maybe rip her hair out or both. Albeit this was faring much better than their last duel, it was just as frustrating. Currently her consolation was that she managed to land a hit, and avoided Calanthe’s incoming Incendio. But there was still much to do and a long way to go. Readying her wand, she prepared for the next volley of spells.

The high keeping Calanthe afloat faded as soon as she saw Maria expertly sidestep her spell. If there was no blue light engulfing her, the witch’s thoughts would have probably sunk back to some place of hopelessness. That was where they usually were, anyways. But Katrina’s healing charm was a welcome aid, and Calanthe was reminded that the Gryffindors were the ones holding the reigns here.

As much as his passion for duelling had developed in recent months, even Pericles could not help but think that this match was practically painful to watch now. Maria was being pushed to her limits, standing on her own for the past half of this duel's duration. Calanthe and Katrina had been oozing buckets of mucus off and on for some time now, surely becoming dizzy and dehydrated despite the passing respite of Reparifors. It was time Katrina treated herself to some of that relief. She had sustained her partner for several rounds, staving off elimination by bogie, and now had to heal herself lest she face that fate instead. She had a healer's touch it seemed, managing to cast the spell in spite of the snot river, which trickled out when the bright blue light washed over her. Her focus would improve, though this was not over yet.

Try as Calanthe may to be ready for the next attack, darting to the side as Maria took aim, the badger wasn't letting her go so easily. Her chestnut wood and snallygaster heartstring wand barely spluttered out the spell, but the witch aimed it with such incredible precision, it took the dodging lioness by surprise. She was struck center of mass by a blast of Incendio, and while it did not set fire to her robes, that dreaded blast of force and heat was agonizing enough. Consciousness was becoming harder to cling to with every blow.

Good morning duellists! We have about 23~ hours left until deadline. I need 3 posts and 2 actions, otherwise please owl/dm me if an extension is needed.

Katrina healing every opportunity she got was getting old for Maria very fast. However she couldn’t be too upset with this round, as she’d managed to hit Calanthe despite the Gryffindor’s efforts to dodge. It was a close call too, because it felt like her spell was more than likely going to backfire but by a stroke of luck and perhaps extra concentration, the crisis was averted. She’d set herself on fire once, or perhaps it was twice, nevertheless they needn’t add to the classic Hufflepuff trope.

She looked to her opponents again. Kat and Calanthe had been expelling more than just spells for quite a few rounds now, and Maria hoped that it wouldn’t be long before one of them succumbed to the snot. However, there was still two of them and one of her, and right now just hoped she to do some damage before they managed to strike back. Perhaps she still stood a chance of surviving.

Luck and skill got her this far, she just hoped it would bring her victory.

The reprieve granted by Katrina's second healing charm was briefly marred by panic as Calanthe, knowing she would continue to be the badger's target, blanked on an appropriate move. So she hit the deck. Of course, she had not anticipated the badger's perfect accuracy. It was a wonder how the petite girl made such a hulking target. She never thought her movements were heavy before this duel. Ugh, can't we have it easy. For once. At least Katrina found the opportunity to cast the charm on herself, the glow of the spell fading to reveal ... not the picture of health, but it was better than before, certainly.

Katrina realized, as she nearly toppled over, that her Curse had rapidly worsened. She was out of focus, her nose wouldn't stop running, and the pressure in her sinuses had built into a raging headache. It got to the point that Katrina realized it would be better if she healed herself. Calanthe needed the extra support.

Without needing to close her eyes, Katrina cast Reparifors on herself, sighing in relief as the blue cascaded over her, subsiding the Curse for a bit longer. With a clear head and even clearer intentions, Katrina turned back to Maria. This duel had gone on long enough. Time to finish this once and for all.

And so it came to pass, through a series of increasingly improbable exchanges, that there stood one lion, one badger.

Katrina and Calanthe were thoroughly unamused by their opponent's absurd evasive abilities, but their frustration was not incentive to make Maria stand any stiller. The Gryffindors sent off a set of Incendios towards the Hufflepuff. Katrina's, she whirled out of the way from, but this brought her directly into the path of Calanthe's spell instead. The blow hit. The fire scorched her skin through the robe, though it did not catch. She retaliated, and for the final time, Calanthe would feel the cruel sting of fire hitting her burned, bogie-riddled body. The pressure and pain were overwhelming. She had been battered and scorched beyond what she could bear, formidable though her endurance had been, and it was time to rest.

The seconds it took for her to hit the stage seemed to drag on. Through that duration, the referee could only stare in abject shock, the expression halfway between horror and awe. Then, less formal than formerly, he simply shouted the word "Stop!" Pericles swept in from the sideline, flanked by older assistants, assuring Calanthe really was unconscious before his (NPC) helpers carefully collected her onto a stretcher. She had undergone enough agony for one afternoon. Now, it was down to seeing which of the two would avenge their fallen partner, raking in the first win for their team. Katrina was struggling desperately against an onslaught of mucus, whereas Maria was surely feeling the rise of soreness and ebb of adrenaline. It was only a matter of time before one of them gave in. "Continue."

Maria managed to dodge one set of flames only to put herself in the path of another. The fire burnt and stung and a startled gasp came from her lips both from the pain and being caught off guard. However this time it wasn’t a total loss as she’d at least managed to take down Calanthe with the same spell that hit her. For the nth time Maria thought she would cry - at least this time it was in relief.

The badger got up and gathered herself while they carried Calanthe off. She was feeling woozy and a little worse for wear. From across the area Kat seemed to be feeling the effects of the bogies but if Maria’s exhausted mind would recall, in reality they’d barely laid a scratch on her. She took another deep breath. It was one down and one more to go. So much could go wrong in the next few moments but so much could go right as well. If she played her cards right she might actually be able to take Katrina down before the lioness took her down. That in itself was a big if, but one thing was for sure - if Maria was going down, would go down swinging.
