Right after lunchtime
Rose was sitting quietly on the side of the fountain in the Courtyard. It was moderately cold outside, nothing too insufferable to anyone who actually cared in that moment. Rose was not one of them, though. Her body was very still, and her head was aimed at her lap, where her hands were. Her eyes were looking at her hands, which were laying on top of her red and gold knit fingerless gloves in her lap. Yeah, she had taken her cozy gloves off, even though it was chilly outside. Her breathing was shallow but even, barely noticeable at all unless you had a very very keen eye. The stillness was in every muscle of her body, staying in the exact position as the moment before. It was a talent (if you would call it that) that very few possessed. A lot of people could show off moving, but there were not a lot of people who could demonstrate the talent of staying almost completely without movement.
She looked like she was lost in gentle thought, but maybe it was unnerving how she didn't move for that long. How long? Rose wasn't aware. She didn't know.
But the state of her mind and the state of her body were not reflective of one another. Her body may have been still and quiet, looking serene and thoughtful, but her mind was running, galloping almost, seeming to be rushing from one thought to another at breakneck speed, so fast she could barely think the first one before another took its place. No matter how much control she had over her body in that moment, the control over her mind was difficult to grasp.
This was the thing with trying so hard to pay attention to classes the whole day. The whole week, really. She would suppress her mind running free and wild so much that when she had time to think to herself and she let her mind wander, she was almost drowning when the dam broke.
She was not expecting to be approached in that moment.

As he often did following lunch, Quinne chose to wander a bit after his friends went their own way. They'd planned their usual meet-up later, and he headed outside instead of going to his usual visiting spots. The library could handle a day without him!
He'd spotted Rose along the way and watched her a moment, only because the unexpected stillness she held so easily was an unexpected sight. Although hesitant at first, he wandered over to the fountain and adjusted his scarf. The chill was rarely a bother, but unlike the older girl, he kept his gloves on - simply to avoid eventually numb fingers. Even if it was likely she didn't look his way right away, he still smiled in habit upon his approach and eventual position a bit at her side.
"Hello!"
Quinne greeted kindly, though he'd offer an apologetic look if he wound up startling her out of any thoughts. If not, even better! A good first start. He rubbed at one hand with another, despite the gloves doing their work well and lacking any soreness in either. "Hope I'm not interrupting anything. I mean, even if you're out here alone and not really doing much, but I know some people like to have a moment to sit with their thoughts." Again, he realized he was rambling to yet another stranger. Not that it was any different with people he knew, but it made him feel a bit awkward regardless.
"Anyway. Would you like some company?" The Ravenclaw would ask, moving his hands yet again, as if he couldn't quite put off his fidgeting as easily as stopping himself from overtalking. This time, his fingers adjust his bangs and trail down to smooth out one length of his scarf.

Rose heard the cheerful greeting before she realized it was directed at her. Thankfully, this did cause her to not be startled as she looked up at the source of the noise. He joined her, sitting next to her on the fountain side. He was very friendly in his greeting, and she answered, "Hi." She found herself wondering why he had approached her in the first place. She even had the feeling that she was supposed to know this guy, or supposed to recognize him. Was he a classmate of hers? Had they met somewhere before? But no, this was the first time they had met, Rose was sure of it after a couple of seconds.
He was actually saying all the things she found ethical and right for someone just approaching someone he didn't know, which swayed Rose's opinion on him almost immediately- he seemed like a good person. He asked her if his presence was okay after explaining some of his thoughts.
She smiled. "Sure. I would love some company." In those words, he would hear her voice shine through, the American accent that accompanied her words. Yet, she wasn't hard to understand, he would know exactly what she was saying just as quickly as he would hear any other voice's words. She cocked her head, asking, "Just out of curiosity, though, what made you come up to me?" Her voice was, as it was most of the time, gentle, casual, and polite. It was purely out of curiosity.
Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.
It was only then that Rose realized that her hands were actually quite cold. She hadn't been paying that much attention before to the temperature of her hands, as she had been very deeply lost in thought. She pulled her gloves back on her hands, which were getting pink on the tips of her fingers by now. She hadn't been out here long enough for them to get numb or anything, but it was probably a smarter idea to keep her gloves on. Once she had slid her gloves on, she stuck her hands in the pockets of the coat she was wearing. "What brings you out to the Hogwarts Grounds this..." Rose looked up at the sky, measuring the sun's position. "...afternoon?" She had eaten a big breakfast and thus had skipped lunch today, and she hadn't really looked at a clock in a couple hours. She wasn't even sure what time it was.
Emerald eyes took in Rose's new acquaintance. He looked maybe like a first or second year, and he didn't seem familiar enough to be in any of Rose's classes, so maybe he was a first year. Black hair and blue eyes, very well put together in terms of appearance. He seemed like a nice person so far, very friendly and cheerful. It definitely wouldn't hurt to have a conversation with him.
This was one of Rose's mindless habits. She hadn't meant to gauge up his personality and appearance into a vague summary of him and what kind of person he might be, but her observant nature had just done it, faster than a blink of an eye.

"Great!" Quinne replied and he'd take that as better invitation to sit atop the fountain-edge, since he wanted to atleast be sure he wasn't intruding. The curious question was expected, though his reasoning for his approach was as innocent as possibly expected in return. "Well, you were by yourself, so I figured maybe you wouldn't mind some company....or you were waiting for someone. Honestly, I was curious about the answer to that myself." And he wasn't too sure if the latter was incorrect or not yet, but he'd leave it for her to confirm or deny.
As she re-gloved her hands, Quinne would rub his own together, despite not having been out there long enough to really worry about a chill. "Well, just finished lunch and a walk outside after seemed like a good idea. I generally take to the library or study hall once I finish, but I've done that enough times this month already that I wanted a change. What about you?" Aside from maybe daydreaming, but it was, once again, a question determined by whether or not she was just meeting someone.
One hand rubbed at a cheek, and the Ravenclaw almost considered wrapping his scarf around the lower part of his face, even with the annoyance of having to talk through it that might occur. He looked back at her with a faint smile, pale eyes soon shifted away to look over the rest of the area. Not many outside, not including those who were passing by to head for certain spots. There was an errand for worms, wasn't there?
"Oh! I am always bad at this part, but I'm Quinne. Lawson."
A quick introduction, which should've possibly be done before he chattered onwards.

Thankfully, the boy hadn't approached her for anything but he thought she might want some company, though Rose made a guess inside that maybe wanted some himself. Rose liked that response- it didn't make her look like she had been lonely or antisocial or anything. Rose shook her head, though, when he suggested that she might have been waiting for someone. "I wasn't waiting for anyone... Unless I'm really forgetful today," she added with a smirk. Rose was not the kind of person to forget about meeting with someone, so she doubted that was the case at all. As for his reciprocated question...
"I was just- gathering my thoughts and stuff," Rose replied, when he said he was wondering about why she was out here alone. But she didn't want him to feel like he had done something wrong in approaching her. Actually, she was glad he interrupted her thoughts. "I don't mind the company, though." Rose smiled gently at him. Rose wondered if she was interrupting his walk, if he thought she might need company, and chosen that above his walk. Maybe he was already done with it, but Rose had a sneaking suspicion, like most of the time, that she was ruining everything.
He introduced himself as Quinne Lawson, and Rose realized she should have definitely done that before. She laughed a little. "And I am usually excellent at this part, but it seems not today," she said brightly. It was true, she usually was the one to introduce herself as soon as she saw someone, or they started talking, asking questions to each other, getting to know each other. It was always top on her list of things to know about people- a name to put with their face and their encounter. But she had forgotten this one time. "I'm Rose. Rose Moon," she answered back. "It's nice to meet you, Quinne."
Rose thought of questions to ask that would help her to know Quinne better. "What's your favorite place in Hogwarts?" she asked. "So far, at least." She could probably tell a lot about his character from this question. If it was the library, he might like books and reading, or like the quiet refuge it was. If it was the Great Hall or other places where a lot of people congregated, he was probably more extroverted and liked other people. She could go on and on in her head, but she listened for his answer.
