A Book And A Lake Closed

Mariah walked along the bank, her hands deep inside the hidden pockets of her long sleeve, faux denim dress. Her hair, black, fell in long waves down her back and the sun heated it, making her head warm despite the slight chill. She watched her shoes as she walked, enjoying the way her feet sank in the sand.

The wind picked up, whipping her skin mercilessly, but she relished it. The cool bite seemed to clear her head of all its muddle. Mariah looked up and out across the lake watching the water glitter. She heard a lot of stories about the lake. Apparently there was a Giant Squid and even Mermaids lurking in its depths. Mariah wondered briefly if the water was magically altered to hold creatures so use to depths closer to ocean than lake. She was sure she could find it in A History Magic if she looked, but why would she bother doing schoolwork on a weekend?

Mariah kept walking until she found her favorite spot. Here the sun hit the sand perfectly, providing warmth and as the sun lifted in the sky, the trees shadows stuck out to provide shade. Mariah shrugged the bag off of her shoulders and opened it, pulling out an extra quilt she had tucked away in her chest. She unfurled it with a quick jerk and laid it neatly across the sand. Mariah sat down on the quilt and dropped her bag beside her. She pulled at a well worn book and opened to the front page.

Mariah was careful to hide the front cover. It was one of her mother's romance novels (one that her mother allowed her to read that is) and the cover held a strapping burly guy clutching a swooning girl in his beefy overbearing arms.

Mariah would just die if anyone knew of her secret obsession. It was a girly thing, romance and the idea that her daughter absolutely loved them pleased Mariah's mother to no end. Mariah was sucked into the world of starcrossed lovers, unaware of the world around her.

The wind was fresh on that sunny afternoon and the sun was shining bright. The young girl's eyes were scanning the view that she had, sitting at the window in her dorm. She had finished her homework and she thought that such a sunny day could not be wasted, but she didn't really know what to do.

She looked over at the lake and felt a little discomfort. Since the events with Rhea had happened, she had not gone back, fearful of the squid. She frowned and thought to herself that it was useless to maintain such a fear. She put a hat on and brought an astrology book with her before running down the stairs to get to the grounds. She was hit in the face by the strength of the wind and her hat nearly flew away. She held this one while walking, determined to get over with her fear. Baby steps.., she thought.

When she got to the top of the small hill leading to the lake, she stopped and observed the scenery. An other girl was there, reading. Peach smiled and slowly walked down to where the grass stopped. She looked over at the waters and was took by a little feeling of uneasiness. She took some kind of comfort in the fact that she wasn't alone.

Peach took off her shoes and took a few steps on the warm sand. She wondered why she hasn't done this earlier and a smile appeared on her face. She happily walked towards the young girl and when she got near enough, she sat down and said; " Hi, may I join you in your reading? "

Mariah looked up in surprise and jerked the book from view, sitting on it like it was.... well a cheesy romance.

"Hi," she stuttered, a deep blush coloring her tan cheeks. " y-yeah!" She moved to the side, offering some of her quilt so the girl could get off the sand.

"I didn't think anyone would want to be out here," Mariah admitted. "You know, with the weather and all." She gestured up at the sky as if one could see the wind whipping around them. She pushed her long black curls away from her face when said wind decided it looked better in her eyes. Boldly, Mariah stuck her hand out toward the other girl.

"I'm Mariah," she said. "Mariah Menstil." Mariah always gave her name to people the same way. It was like a script, and she practiced it like one. Mariah had never interacted with children her own age. All of her brothers were years older than her and they treated her like at any moment she could shatter into a million pieces. To say she was a pampered girl was an understatement. Surprisingly, she was never spoiled because of it.

Mariah brought her attention back to the girl and offered her a kind smile. Just because she was a little bad at social interaction didn't mean she didn't know how to make friends.

The young girl that Peach bothered jumped in surprise and quickly hid the book she was reading. Peach didn't say anything about it although she did question it at first. Instead, she took the hand that the said Mariah had stuck towards her. Peach smiled and shook it vigourisly. " I'm Peach ", she said, the same way Mariah did, " Peach Thorne. ". She then obsrved the young girl before her. This one had dark long hair and light eyes. Her smile widenned, so she could make the other girl feel welcomed. Peach put her hat down and placed her book on top of it so it wouldn't fly out everywhere. Her hair was whipping her face because of the wind and she did the best to keep it out of her eyes.

She looked over at the lake, which seemed calm. But beware, because under this sweet surface hid a hideous monster. The squid had come out and tried to hurt her and her friends, which had really dimmed her bravoury. She didn't care though, she was a Hufflepuff and Hufflepuffs weren't supposed to be brave. " It is really windy. I didn't want to waste such an afternoon but maybe coming down here wasn't the smartest idea... " she said as her book flipped open and its pages twirled around. The young girl frowned and clapped it close. She sighed and looked back at Mariah.

Mariah laughed as Peach slammed the book shut.

" I like it when it's like this," she admitted, but didn't elaborate. She didn't want to tell Peach that she found the castle overwhelming with all its... well everything. Home was simple. She missed it.

"What house are you?" She asked to mostly make conversation. It seemed appropriate as it was the weekend and they didn't don their work robes. Mariah knew it was a well used question but she never said she was able to come up.with anything origional on the spot. Despite being a social creature, Mariah's rough start at Hogwarts made her uncomfortable with people as well as for people. She'd tried to fix it, but for the most part the damage was done. It was a miracle that this girl talked to her now.

Mariah was secretly grateful, but she'd never admit it out loud because that made her uncool and that was very bad. Her brothers were all popular and if Mariah didn't follow in the footsteps of those before her, she'd be doomed to never live it down.

Not that they would be mean to her... not intentionally. She shook herself mentally away from her rambling thoughts and focused back on Peach.

Peach always found something to talk about to people. She rarely ran out of subjects and it was surprising as she wasn't a chatty person herself. She enjoyed listening to others more, to be honest, and she didn't like to have the spot right on her. It had always been like that, probably since her bith. She didn't want to be a special snowflake, no. She just wanted to be her, and that was good enough. Her thoughts were cut shot when Mariah asked what house she was in.

" I'm in Hufflepuff, " she said. She liked her house. It was for the most filled with incredible and sweet people who loved blanket forts and hot chocolates and to read books all together in a room. She didn't consider her house as her second family just yet but it would eventually come. Hopefully. " and you? "

The wind lifted a little bit of sand off the ground to turn it into a tiny tornado and Peach slightly laughed. She found nature cute, unless it concerned the Giant Squid. But that wasn't nature, that was an accident. A massive, horrible accident. And some people found that accident cute and sweet. Fools, I tell you. Absolute fools. That thing was nothing but horrible and scary and...slimmey.

"Hufflepuff," Mariah said, her old bitterness of this fate long gone. It wasn't that she hated the house, it was that it wasn't her Family's house. All Gryffindors, the lot of them, and here she was, a Hufflepuff. If she thought about it, which she had many times, it made sense. Mariah was more likely to help the mugged than run after a mugger. She was more likely to tend the wounded than bring the inflicter to his knees. Mariah's rash reaction to the sorting incident had limited her ability to join the house in the real way, prevented her from settling in appropriately.

It wasn't as though she was opposed to doing so, it was just that Mariah thought with her heart before her mind. That was probably why Ravenclaw hadn't been her new Home Away From Home.

The wind picked up, swirling sand around them and settling some onto her quilt. Mariah leaned forward to swipe the blanket off, offering Peach at smile when she laughed. It was genuine, as if hearing someone being amused amused Mariah in turn.

"I'm guessing there's nothing better to do in the castle on a saturday?" She asked politely. "I'm rather jealous of the third years, it being their first year going to Hogsmeade and all. Its bound to be far more interesting than walking about the school grounds."

Peach nodded. Being older is easier and obviously funner than having to stay in the castle. Obviously, some people explored but after a while you had seen enough. The ground were the only thing left and sadly, technology wasn't a thing here. They could have movie marathons in the common rooms or even the Great Hall, or organize activities but no, no one did so. And it sucked. It really did.

" You're right, it's quite sucky here on weekends for first years. I think they might have changed the rules about Hogsmeade though...But I'm not too sure. It's also quite sad that the herbology department is closed outside of class hours...We could observe the plants and study them a little more...But everything is dangerous in this castle so we can't do anything. ". She sighed. Weekends were tiring in a way where you did nothing so your body just kind of gave up on doing things. If only things were organized a little more here...

It was only the very start of the school year but that must have been when and where they should make it super fun and interesting! The Hufflepuff house never did anything else than tiny feasts from foods stolen from the kitchens.

"They changed the rules?" Mariah asked, perking up considerably. " What are they now?"

The idea that maybe first years could go to Hogsmeade had Mariah practically bouncing with excitement, so much so that the book she had tucked under her bottom wiggled free, revealing the hero and damsel swooning and flexing on the cover. Mariah didn't notice. Her mind was far away thinking of sweets and clothes and butter beer- Mmm, warm frosty butter beer. Her mouth began to water.

"What would you do first if we could go?" She asked excitedly. " I'd probably visit the shops, get the latest in which fashion. I have mostly muggle clothes because Mum's a muggle and she'll take me to London for my outfits."

Mariah was rambling, no doubt, but she hardly spoke to anyone, much less girls about very girl things. Her Mother had always been her partner in such conversations and shared Mariah's enthusiasm on the finer things in life.

Mariah wondered if the girl liked clothes and if she often went shopping a well. She would ask her when the time arrived but for now she looked at Peach expectantly, a waiting her answer about Hogsmeade.

Peach nodded slightly. She wasn't too sure but apparently some people from Hogsmeade would come to the castle and put up some activities. Maybe it would be the same the other way around, she was not sure. She told her new friend about what she knew on the matter and she smiled, shrugging. " Don't rely on me for information, all I hear are rumours. " . Mariah really liked fashion, apparently and she rambled about it for a while. Peach let her, being used to people rambling. She enjoyed listening, it made people feel important and worth other's time and that was really nice to think that others felt that way.

Peach thought about it and the first thing she would do would go to a book shop. Books were her life, and she needed some romance books to get her mind off things a little. She'd probably get something to drink too, as it was still quite cold and if she had the money she'd get herself a newer, warmer coat. " I'd really like some romance books, " she said. " I'd go get a drink or a sweet and then I'd get a new coat. My mother never really was into fashion because of her job and so I haven't been initiated to it...my taste in clothes is probably horrible and it's understandable! ". She burst in a laugh.
