Worms, worms, glorious worms. Though Thomas thought himself to be fairly prestigious, he was still a thirteen year old boy. Digging in the mud, touching roadkill, though the young Ravenclaw had an ego the size of Pangaea he was a slave to the fact that he was still a kid who had gross little impulses. Among them was playing with ordinary muggle worms growing up, so though it came as a surprise to many who knew him, the Ravenclaw was inwardly delighted to sign up to watch the flobberworms. Still, for the sake of appearances, he naturally made quite a few faces when Callie asked him to help, and he put up a fight until eventually succumbing to his boyish nature. Comments like, ‘that’s so gross, why would you even bother with them,’ and ‘that sounds like a waste of time, we should be working on homework instead,’ naturally left his mouth, but in reality he was just saving face. Keeping his happiness to himself, he levitated the worm beyond arm’s length with an expertly cast, “Wingardium Leviosa.” That way, at the very least, he wouldn’t have to stoop to touching the creature.

Wandering through the halls, it came to little surprise that he and Callie eventually ended up in the duelling club. Thomas’ entire personality practically revolved around the sport, something he would have never anticipated given his abhorrence of physical activity, and as the two wandered the halls with their worms he flashed his companion a grin. “We should show them the dueling club, I think they’d like it a lot in there, it’s fun…” Trailing off awkwardly, Thomas’ genuine expression of joy faded as he was quick to repair his facade. “Um, as like a change of scenery… It’s good enrichment for the flobberworms. Obviously,” he clarified, clinical as ever. Of course, it was for the wellbeing of the worms… Anything for them.

Opening the door and walking in, the boy took a deep breath as he took in the familiar scenery. The young Ravenclaw had learned to love a good fight, at least one with spells rather than fists (Elias was always fond of the latter rather than the former, which was one of the countless reasons why they didn’t get along of course), primarily because of dueling. Thomas approached one of the dummies and carefully levitated his flobberworm onto it, a delicate balancing act as the blanketed creature sat relatively unbothered. The worms had no eyes after all, it had no idea where it was for the most part. Looking back at Callie, he offered the girl a smile that looked sickening sweet on his impish little face. “Look! He’s so talented… He must take after me,” he declared.

Some people might have regretted signing up to babysit a flobberworm all day but not Callie. If anything the thought of looking after the slimy little nightmares for an afternoon was a delight, especially since she had convinced Thomas to join her. Well convinced is a strong word..harassed until he finally gave in might’ve been a more accurate description. Besides the thought that somebody would not want to spend the afternoon playing with literal worms wasn’t an idea she was willing to entertain. She’d grown up on a farm after all, playing with random disgusting little creatures was her entire early childhood!

However Callie’s discovery about the delights of flobberworms was, like most magical things, recent. Up until now they’d largely been relegated to a chapter in a potions textbook so the chance to look after one for an entire afternoon was exciting for someone like her. For once though her excitement didn’t seem to breed carelessness as she carried the swaddled creature with a surprising amount of care for someone so clumsy. She’d even made sure to wear shoes without laces for the occasion to avoid an inopportune meeting with the floor.

Although getting a hold of a flobberworm was one thing...deciding what to do with one was another. “Are you sure we should take them to the duelling room..” Callie voiced her concerns whilst wandering down the hallways alongside her duelling partner. “People get knocked out in there all the time! We’d know, we’re the ones knocking people out most of the time!” She exclaimed in mild dismay as the duo turned another corner towards the hallowed halls of the duelling club. “If young Alejandro here gets hit with a rogue incendio, I will personally seek vengeance on the offending party with that singing jinx you love so much.” The mild grin creeping onto Callie’s face likely gave away the fact she was trying to bait poor Thomas Baines, given that she’d used the boy as a practice dummy for the jinx before. However the grin fell slightly when she watched Thomas carefully levitate the flobberworm on top of a practice dummy. This wasn’t going to end well….was it?

“Oh, please Callie, don’t worry. With my dueling expertise, I will be able to keep both of our worms safe from harm.” The young Ravenclaw was beyond confident in his words, and despite his diminutive form his puffed out chest clearly made it clear that he wasn’t messing around. Hands placed firmly on his hips, Thomas looked positively triumphant before looking back at the flobberworm entrusted in his care. “I think I want to name the flobberworm Montezuma the Mighty. He is quite glorious, after all.” Standing on his tiptoes to grab the worm from the dummy, he held it with a surprising level of gentleness. In spite of himself, he couldn’t help but feel strangely at ease. Who knew that the boy had even the slightest nurturing instincts? Certainly not most, and probably not Callie, but the care in his movements made it clear that he was far from the heartless little monster he wanted people to think he was.

Funny, considering how gosh darn ugly the flobberworms were. What a peculiar little creature to grow attached to… Then again, Thomas was a peculiar little boy. Perhaps it just made sense.

Though he lost himself in the moment, forgetting that he was supposed to be disgusted by the creatures, Thomas once again cast the Levitation Charm on the worm to put it back on the dummy. He mimed a look of absolute contempt before going to wipe some of the spare slime onto Callie’s robes, “This is gross, why’d you even make me do this…? Don’t tell me you’re actually enjoying this!” His heart wasn’t in the comments, and regardless of his peer’s retaliation he put Montezuma back where he had retrieved it from. “I’m gonna start telling people you like worms… Worm girl, worm girl!” Thomas mocked derisively, his tone more playful than malicious which made it clear that it was just teasing. The boy’s smile was practically radiant—though usually closed off, he always allowed himself to let loose in the presence of his dueling partner. Something about her was strangely calming, at least to Thomas, and as a result he felt little need to put up any facades.

@Thomas Baines
Callie couldn’t help but let out a bright laugh when Thomas boasted of his duelling expertise. Given that he seemed to be rather fond of getting targeted by rogue blindfolding spells lately it came across as quite rich. However she didn’t delve much deeper into her slight mockery of the boy since getting on your duelling partners bad side right before an upcoming duel was probably an awful idea. They were up against a pair of Hufflepuffs next time around and Callie found herself determined to maintain their current winning streak.“Montezuma the Mighty will tremble before the dashing good looks of Alejandro the Heartbreaker! I’ve got this entire storyline of him being a spy who likes his cocktails shaken not stirred. No, I totally didn’t steal that from James Bond, don't question it.” She announced proudly as she cradled the supposed heartbreaker in her arms.

For a moment she was caught entirely off guard by the care of Thomas’ movements. Tender and nurturing were not exactly words she tended to associate with the gremlin of a boy after all. Fire, incendios and a bad attitude were much quicker to be associated with Thomas Baines. However the brief moment of tenderness quickly gave way for the usual gremlin child she was accustomed to once the worm returned to its perch atop the practice dummy.

“Because worms are cool, idiot!”
Callie protested defiantly as she similarly covered her own hand in mucus and proceeded to wipe it on Thomas’ cheek. “Don’t act like you don’t love it...you even named him! You called him glorious! Quit trying to fool me Mr Baines I know you’re a softie!” She mocked whilst pointing an accusing finger directly at Thomas. “Thomas you idiot, I grew up on a farm! Of course I’m not bothered by being called worm girl! You ever had to slog through cow poop? I don't think so!” She scoffed as she held up her flobberworm to allow the creature to properly inspect the room. “Even Montezuma thinks you can do better insults than that.” She taunted with her usual toothy grin across her face. “Side note, I
think Elias would love to wake up to some flobberworm mucus on his pillow one morning.”

As she defended herself against Thomas’ admittedly poor attempts at mocking her, Callie was quite happily parading Alejandro the Heartbreaker and apparent spy around the duelling room. Towards the end of her brief ramble proclaiming the brilliance of being branded ‘worm girl’ she placed the worm at the spot she usually took up on the duelling platform. To complete the entire look she even positioned her wand in the folds of the blanket encasing the creature to make it seem as though it was about to cast a spell. “My child is a genius! A downright prodigy!” She announced whilst dramatically wiping a tear from her eye. “They grow up so fast! Next thing you know I’ll have to pay out for..driving lessons? Yeah, that seems adulty! Let’s go with that!”
