Valentine's Day Mess
@Elisabeth Erner 13 February, 2021Gia stared down at the plate of cookies in front of her, wondering how she should decorate them. They were clearly supposed to be Valentine's Day cookies, but she wanted them to be a little more unique than that. Almost every other student sitting around her in the Great Hall at the moment was decorating their cookies with red and pink frosting and sprinkles. Not that those colors weren't nice, of course, since Gryffindor's colors were red and gold, but. . . they all looked the same to her.
The first year had arrived in the room ten minutes earlier. Somehow, she'd spent all that time thinking. It didn't really seem like her, Gia thought, but that was what she'd been doing. Even now she sat racking her brain for any idea, no matter how big or how small. And even now, those ideas eluded her. Sighing, the young Gryffindor decided to just decorate one cookie randomly and see if that sparked her imagination. Motioning to a house-elf nearby that she needed some assistance, the girl waited for him to come over. When he arrived, she asked for some frosting and sprinkles. "Yes, green." she repeated when he asked if he had heard her color choice correctly. "That's okay, right?"
"Yes miss, it is fine!" The house-elf reassured her as he hurried to give her the correct frosting and all the other sprinkles and ingredients she'd asked for.
Once she got all the decorating supplies she needed for this first cookie, Gia got to work. First, she frosted the top with the green frosting she'd been given, making sure it was completely smooth before continuing. When that was done, the brunette grabbed the blue sprinkles she'd gotten and dropped them around the edge of the cookie, making a border. After that, Gia picked up the black frosting and made a smaller heart directly inside that border, and once she'd finished, she repeated this process a couple more times until there was not enough space in the middle of the cookie to make a another heart. Leaning back slightly, the Gryffindor girl smiled at her creation. "Perfect," she said to herself.
Looking up, Gia glanced over at the other students (and professors) sitting in the seats around her and marveled at their work. One girl's cookie in particular had caught her eye, and the eleven year old walked over, holding her plate of cookies in her left hand. "Your cookies look amazing!" she complimented the girl with a bright, friendly smile. "I've only finished one so far." Gia admitted with a sheepish smile. Then, wanting some company, she added, "Do you mind if I sit here with you?"Word Count: 445/400

Uh, hi me? Elisabeth stole glances to her right and left, making sure that the student in front of her really was complimenting her. Somehow, it was rather rare for her to be greeted by other people, particularly those she did not know, or at least that was how she felt. Today, however, a fellow first-year she had never spoken to before said hi, compliment her biscuit decoration, and even asked to join.
Quickly, Elisabeth returned the other girl's friendly smile. "Para nada," *) the part-Veela replied. "Please do. And, um, thank you." She tried to look at Gia's biscuit - the sole one the Gryffindor said she had decorated - to return the praise, but since the eleven-year-old was still standing whilst carrying her plate, Elisabeth could not take a good look at it except noticing some green frosting - it looked like the same colour as the bit of frosting stuck on Gia's face, actually. The Hufflepuff was wondering if she should tell the Gryffindor about it; finally she decided yes, but perhaps not now - let the English sat down first...
Elisabeth herself had finished decorating two biscuits and was currently working on the last one. The first was for her papá; the Asian-Latinx girl had dipped this heart-shaped biscuit in melted chocolate so that its upper side was totally covered in dark chocolate. As for the decoration, she opted for red-coloured icing sugar and lots of pink (and two red) sugar-coated chocolate confectionery. That should be enough to spoil his sweet tooth!
As for her mamá's, Elisabeth used food colouring to make it pastel pink. A white border, made of icing sugar, was created before she stuck gum paste the shape of little red roses and small green leaves on the top right of the biscuit. It looked both classy and elegant, and Elisabeth knew for sure that her mamá liked roses very much. She certainly would love this biscuit...
The final biscuit our Belizean was decorating was for her younger brother. It was more difficult to decide, mainly because he did not really have strong preferences on neither decoration nor how sweet a biscuit ought to be.
"I hope you don't mind me finishing this one?" she asked Gia politely, still with the friendly smile on her face.
Elisabeth finally settled on pale yellow to serve as the base colour of this third biscuit. Before it was completely dry, the Hufflepuff created several lines so that patterns of diamonds were now visible. As for the finishing touch, Elisabeth used a number of ball-shaped fondant. It was done; and she was sure her brother would like his surprise biscuit.

Valentine's Day Mess
@Elisabeth Erner 13 February, 2021Gia smiled at the girl and slid into the seat beside her. "Is that Spanish you were speaking?" she asked, setting her plate of cookies down in front of her. She didn't know any other language besides English herself so this was a bit of a wild guess, but the first year was pretty sure that she'd guessed correctly. There was just something. . . recognizable about some languages, she thought. "And you're welcome, they're really nice!" Looking down at the cookies on her own plate, Gia hurried to get back to work decorating.
Picking up the cookie closest to her that hadn't been decorated yet, the young Gryffindor covered it in light pink frosting. After making sure the whole thing was perfectly smooth, she made an intricate pattern of triangles on it with white icing, which ended up making it look very interesting and geometrical. It would certainly stand out just like the last one she'd made, that was for sure. Hearing the other girl speak again, Gia turned to see what she was asking. "Hmm? Oh, no, I don't mind. What's your name, again?" she didn't think the Hufflepuff had told her yet.
When she'd received an answer, the eleven year old would nod and turn back to decorating. For her third cookie, she covered the right side with melted chocolate so that the cookie was half frosted and half not. Then, on the chocolate-covered side she put a bunch of pink, red, and white sprinkles. Gia had seen a recipe for cookies like this a long time ago on some website or something like that and had just remembered it now. Proudly examining how the two she'd just finished had turned out, the brunette started thinking about how she was going to decorate the other three blank ones left on her plate.
Glancing over at the plate resting beside her own, Gia's eyes widened. "Wow, those look very professional!" she exclaimed. "Are you making them for someone, or are you going to let the house elves hand them out to other students?" She paused, and then added, "I'm probably going to give mine to the house elves, but I'm not fully sure yet." Looking at the ones on the Hufflepuff's plate again, she admired how beautiful they looked. Surely they were for the girl's close friends or family, she thought. Although. . . it would be nice to get a cookie so nicely decorated.Word Count: 848/400

"Huh? Ah, sí*) - sorry, I mean, yes!" Elisabeth blushed in panic when realising that she was answering the Gryffindor's question if she had just spoken in Spanish in Spanish. Clearly the fellow first-year did not speak it, and yet the Hufflepuff kept on letting it slip out. "Sorry, my Spanish tends to... just come out without me commanding it. Must be something in my subconscious mind."
Luckily, the student in front of her did not seem offended by this accident. She even asked what the part-Veela's name "again", as if she had told her. In fact, though, she had not, and so she answered with an apology, "Ah sorry, I haven't introduced myself to you yet. My name's Elisabeth. You?"
After the Gryffindor gave our Hispanic-Asian girl her name, both of them went back to decorate their heart-shaped biscuits. Elisabeth had not realised before, but it turned out she had three more biscuits, and she had not decided to whom they ought to be presented, let alone how to decorate of them in order to match the recipient's fondness.
Thinking about this issue, the eleven-year-old finally set her heart on giving one to her one and only maternal aunt. The healer had helped her so much as the only United Kingdom-based relative this girl had, but more than this, because she really cared about her niece. Green was her favourite colour, so Elisabeth dipped the fourth biscuit in melted mint chocolate, and later drew some lines on it using white icing.
Deciding the recipients for the final two biscuits was a challenge even bigger. Elisabeth was considering about sending them to either her paternal grandparents or her maternal grandparents, but if she did, the other set of grandparents would not receive any and this gave out the impression of favouritism, and the Hufflepuff hated it.
She had not found any friend she could considering a close friend here, so sadly this would not be an option. However, suddenly she realised that there was a Hogwarts student who did take initiative to approach her and started a small talk with her. This was, of course, the Gryffindor sitting across her. Yeah right, maybe they both could enjoy some biscuits with hot chocolate...
The dark-haired witch wanted to give this potential friend a biscuit the colour of her house, but sadly they had not told each other about this. Elisabeth was just about to ask when, noticing how deeply absorbed in her work the other girl looked, she decided to postpone asking this question. Thus, instead of implementing her original plan, she made a pretty ladybug using red icing and melted dark and white chocolate. "This should be neutral for everyone to like, or at least not to fuss with," she said inside her head.
Therefore, the sixth biscuit would be for herself, and it was for this reason the part-Veela did not take much trouble in decorating it. A dip in melted white chocolate, a quick and simple drawing using some brown icing, and her final biscuit was ready to eat.
"Wow, those look very professional! Are you making them for someone, or are you going to let the house elves hand them out to other students?" Gia's voice startled Elisabeth as she had not expected the English witch to switch her attention from decorating to taking a look at Elisabeth's.
She also mentioned that she was (probably) going to hand hers to a house elf to be randomly distributed, and the Belizean replied, "I think that's very kind of you. It's like a random act of kindness, and some lucky students would receive a nice surprise - maybe for some of them, it'll mean so much. It's like... I mean... the feeling that their existence matter, it'll make anyone so happy." After a slight pause, "I'm going to send these four to my family and my aunt. And then we can enjoy these two over hot chocolate and a chat."
