An Avenging Badger
Before he left for Hogwarts, Heinrich was left with a list of explicit instructions from his sister who made an enigmatic disappearance. It was four simple instructions listed on a piece of paper he found that morning by his bedside table and shortly, the disappearance of Aurelia. Her handwriting held a cursiveness that gave it a classy aspect, but one that signified it was written with much haste.January 2021
For the three days since he set foot into the Scottish castle, which the majority his was spent time scouting for his older sister to no avail, he could not quite fathom the reasoning for the first two rules she had set him with. But the third one, on the other hand, he knew all too well why. The scars that marked her body were almost always hidden under a layer of makeup or clothing but Heinrich had witnessed most of them. He'd seen the older girl's many scars, one, in particular, was the peculiar mark nestled on the crook of her neck. "A dhampir's bite. Happened a year ago." She had told him once when she caught him staring.1. Never attend a school ball. 2. Never eat candy you didn't buy yourself 3. Stay AWAY from dhampirs
At that time, Heinrich was not knowledgeable of many things, he did not know what a dhampir was. But upon embarking onto Hogwarts, he was enlightened when he stumbled upon a page by the school newspapers. Dhampires docile or dangerous? An attack. Then it occurred to him, 2019 was but a mere year ago, so did Aurelia claimed when she had been bitten. Perhaps the article was about Aurelia.
The eleven-year-old was a far cry from brave. The Hufflepuff had never held a conversation with anyone since he had stepped foot into the school. He had anticipated that Aurelia's guidance would aid him, that she would be in school with him after the incident, but it was left a mystery as to why she disappeared and Heinrich was left to fend for himself in an environment so foreign. Yet this attack, the dhampir could be the key to her disappearance. It had to be. The Aurelia he knew would never leave him on his own, especially not after the incident (werewolf app yet to be approved). Unfortunately, as an eleven year old he was very prone to overthinking and was convinced that the dhampir had taken his sister.
In the morning he watched during breakfast in the great hall, he'd noticed that the dhampirs were pulled to the corner after every meal to receive a vial of blood. There were a few candidates surely. But Heinrich was about to find out the identity of the antagonist of the article. Yes, he was about to break one of three rules that Aurelia had set for him. He was about to approach a dhampir. His ocean blue eyes locked on target, the tallest and perhaps oldest of the handful of pale students. Tucking the article into his pocket he followed a distance away from the dhampir out of the great hall.
Heinrich was too nervous as he trailed behind the boy. If this older boy turned out to be his sister's abductor, what would his next steps be? He could not fight, no he was no match against this his boy, so running would be his best option. However, Heinrich had seemed to wander too far into this train of thought, suddenly realising that the distance between him and the taller hufflepuff had increased. NO. He could not lose him. In a split second, acting on sheer impulse and determination to stop the taller boy in his track, he launched one of his textbook towards the dhampir's direction.
It was an action followed with a feeling of uttermost regret. The book had met its target ~ the back of the boy's head. He was screwed. "Uh... H-hey, I was wondering if... do you know who - um - who Aurelia is?"

Howard had started the day like any other as of late. He arose from his dorm room, had a wash and bee lined it straight for the Great Hall. Not only was there a grumble in his belly, but with it came a thirst that begged to be quenched. It was odd having to satiate the needs of both his human side and Dhampir. Two different natures constantly struggling for dominance within him. Fortunately Hogwarts had implemented daily doses of fresh blood for he and the others of his kind. The routine helped to calm his predatory urges and kept his mind clear and focused throughout the day, keeping the feral nature at bay.
Although the practice was very helpful, it was still a bit uncomfortable to be fed in front of students and staff alike. Howard couldn’t help but feel that all eyes were on him and the few others as they stood off to the side and quickly drank their ration of blood. Part of him wished that it was done in a separate location so they could feed at their leisure, but the other just wanted to take his dose, sit at his table and drink it however he saw fit. Perhaps one day he would feel that comfortable, but now was not the time. He couldn’t stand the stares, the whispers, the way people would shuffle away from him while he did what was only natural for his kind. It filled his belly with anger and was a sure fire way to make him feel dejected and resentful for the rest of the day.
Anyways, with both a full belly and a satiated thirst, Howard would make his leave to begin the rest of his day. As he exited the Great Hall into the Small Hall a slight tingle would creep its way across the fine hairs on the back of his neck. Howard would pause for a moment as he sniffed the air and let his heightened senses explore the area around him. As keen as they were, after a moment he would determine that he must just be paranoid. It was a common thing for him after all. However, he should have trusted his senses because just as he began to walk away something smacked him in the back of his head.
Turning on the spot his eyes would bounce around their sockets as he searched for his attacker. Fangs would plunge from the recesses in his gum line and his fists would fall to his side, palms out and fingers flexed in defense. As ready as he may have been for some kind of serious threat, all he would see was a smaller boy with bright blue eyes. Howard’s blood red eyes would squint in anger as his unsettling aura poured off his body. With one large step he would close the gap and reach out with his hand to grab the fabric of the boys clothing. If successful he would pull him close, if not he would just step even closer. Just as he was about to unleash verbal he’ll on the pip squeak, his question would give Howard pause.
Aurelia.
Howard’s eyes would soften slightly as he looked the other boy over. How could he know her? And why the hell would he be asking him about her? He of course knew Aurelia on a very intimate level but only Howard and she knew of what had transpired between them. Or so he thought. “Yes, I know her.” He would whisper into the smaller boy’s ear. “Now explain yourself before I put your head through a wall.” Again, his voice would not raise, but it carried a very threatening tone.

It was as if time slowed as the book catapulted towards the taller boy and caused an instinctual wince to cross his face then the open pages found its mark. Mentally, he punched himself for proceeding with such a brash action. Consequences usually followed shortly with such actions. This boy was much taller, bigger and definitely stronger than he was. This was a situation that he was not getting out of easily. Heinrich could have as well grabbed a shovel to begin digging his own grave.
The agitation was apparent on the boy's pale face. Every aspect of his visage contributed to the intimidation factor that seemed to reek from his body and sending chills down his spine. The feeling was vaguely familiar. The pair of crimson red hues were terrifying and so was the sickly pale skin. Ultimately, the unsheathing of fangs had almost made the eleven-year-old turn tail and take off. Heinrich could now understand why Aurelia warned her to stay away from dhampirs.
However, Heinrich had questions that he desperately required the answers for. The with sheer determination masking the intense fear that fluttered within him, Heinrich stood his ground as the boy close the distance. The dhampir arms would reach out, causing the young boy to squeeze his eyes close in a grimace expecting a backhanded hit. Instead, he would feel his feet lifted off the ground. Effortlessly had the older boy picked him up from the collar of his school robes.
Perhaps confronting this boy was a bad idea after all. However, fighting through the fear, Heinrich would finally speak. "A-aurelia is missing. We've been very worried and I've been looking for her everywhere. H-have you seen her around?" Of course, everyone was expecting her return, not just his family, the Bezuidenhout, but her betrothed as well. Although Heinrich never could understand the politics of such an arrangement, the Zuheirs shared the concern of her enigmatic disappearance.
There was no point at struggling, there was no way that the boy would release his hold unless he wanted to. Instead, his eyes shined with tears, a reflex to channel the sentiment or fear he was dealing with. Heinrich was far from brave or courageous like his sister was. The acknowledgement of Aurelia only settled him slightly, but any form of reassurance soon dissipated with the promise of harm.
Then Heinrich would add on to the interrogation, "How do you know Aurelia? Are you f-friends?" From the article that he had gained insight from, he was certain that a friendship did not go on between this frightening older year and his sister. He refused to believe so. However, his direct nature got the best of him and Heinrich would bluntly add on, "You have a presence like Aurelia's. whenever I'm around her there is always this unsettling... feeling. "
If Howard was keen enough, Heinrich's features may come across as vaguely familiar. The blue eyes and hair colour were similar to Aurelia's. His general appearance, nose and face structure held a feminine aspect as well.

Aurelia is missing... As the words left the younger boy’s lips, Howard would lower him back into his feet. His hands would release his collar as his expression turned from one of anger to one of guarded curiosity. Aurelia was many things. Smart, beautiful, a capable caster and one of the most fearless people Howard had ever met. On the other hand she also had a knack for finding trouble around ever corner. Her courage was commendable, but it often led her down dark paths. What on earth had she gotten herself into now?!
“I haven’t seen her lately.” Howard answered the boy, his voice still lowered as discussing anything about Aurelia always made him nervous. One of the most recent memory of her whereabouts was the last time they had spoken. A moment of mutual understanding that certainly didn’t mark them as friends, but it at least cleared the air between them. An unfortunate accident brought about by Howard’s unstable nature. He had not apologized nor had she forgiven him, but they had at least agreed to leave the past behind them. Then there was the Halloween Ball where she had left abruptly arguing with her date. However, as Howard racked his mind he could not remember seeing her since then. No passing in the hallway or chance appearance in the common areas of the school. “How long has she been missing?” He asked. Perhaps this boy was just over exaggerating.
The underclass men’s inquiry to Aurelia and Howard’s relationship would give him pause. His red eyes would narrow as he looked the boy over. For the first time he would take in his features. The bright blue eyes were familiar, as were his facial features. It was hard to deny that he resembled the very girl in which they spoke. As he spoke of her presence it would become obvious to Howard that this boy knew her on an intimate level. “My relationship with Aurelia is complicated, but I have known her for quite some time. We are in the same year.” Howard began to explain. Something about how much this boy knew her made him feel more at ease to be open. “You’re right about her presence. She is not like me in nature, but carries the aura nonetheless.” With that said, Howard would close his eyes for just a moment, concentrating on dispersing his dark presence. His facial muscles would flex as he retracted his fangs. As his eyes reopened they would gaze deep into the other boy’s. Howard’s nostrils would flare as he took in the other’s scent before continuing. “Now tell me, how do you know Aurelia?”

Upon contact back onto the ground, a relieved exhale would leave his parted lips. Now he was no longer in the dhampir's grasp yet remained at his mercy. The way that the other lifted his entire form so effortlessly would entail possession of a large bout of strength, such a boy like Heinrich was no match for. The avoidant gaze would set his manifesting fear on display, blue hues refusing to meet the crimson pair. With Aurelia having been present with a comparable aura, surely he would have acquainted with her accompanying unsettling shadow by now, but Howard's was slightly different, in whatever way, the young boy lacked the capability to describe it.
The claim of not having seen the very person he was was searching for brought noticeable disappointment over the boy. "Oh..." in a disheartened breath the word was uttered. Any thoughts of the other Huffle having conducted a potential kidnapping of his older sibling vanished from the claim. Heinrich was one who trusted too easily, it was in his conscience to believe everything he was told, such he would have to learn to alter with following experiences later on. "She came home when she ought to have been in school, from an... event... a ball, she was dressed really nicely. At first, she didn't want to return until the Ilvermorny students were gone. She was supposed to return with me. He'd replied to Howard's interrogation in a single breath, the sentences still cut up in bits of nervous stammers.
Finally, like a chilly breeze in the atmosphere, the weighing aura would fade allowing the boy to take ease before continuing "Our... they didn't want to continue my homeschooling - they preferred if I were at Hogwarts with her. " There was a short pause, a moment of silence as the younger Hufflepuff transitioned into a period of thought. Their siblinghood was not known to many and to say the least, Heinrich was quite apprehensive to pass on that article of information to someone suspected of having attacked his sister. Perhaps there was something about the older year's tone of voice another intimidation factor likely or perhaps he was too desperate to find Aurelia, whatever it was, there was a nagging urge to provide an answer, in fact, it almost if he was being compelled to.
"Aurelia is my s-sister." Frantically Heinrich would blurt out. But that was not the only words that would surprise him. Not so much his tone - which was questionably impertinent, but another of his impulsive queries would shorty catch him off guard, "You bit her. M-maybe that's why she has her aura. M-maybe she got it from you. The mark on her neck, y-you did that?"

Howard could see that the younger boy was visibly disappointed when he told him he had not seen Aurelia, but it only deepened his curiosity. He knew that she was more than capable of taking care of herself and the more the pair spoke of her, Howard was starting to think that her disappearance might be intentional. “Yeah, I was at that ball and saw her briefly. He confirmed what the younger boy stated. “She was with one of the Ilvermorny students, or at least he sounded American. They left the ball in a heated argument.” This detail seemed to go hand in hand with her not wanted to return until they had left. “Could it be possible that she left intentionally?”
The younger boys next statement would catch Howard off guard. “Y-your sister?!” He blurted out in surprise. It really shouldn’t have come as such a shock. Even as he said the words there was a part of Howard’s mind that knew it was obvious. The same blue eyes and facial structure should have given it away, but the fact that he was speaking to Aurelia’s brother shook him for many reasons. The smaller boy would be able to see this upon his face, but his next words would bring about another heated reaction. “Shut up!” Howard hissed into his ear as he prodded his chest with an index finger. His head turned on a swivel to see if anyone might have overheard before he grabbed the boy by the arm and guided/forced him into a quieter corner. Unless he decided to put up a fight.
“Listen...” Howard began to explain the situation after a deep breath to calm his nerves. The only way this boy could have known about him attacking Aurelia was if she told him and hopefully she had used kind words. The last thing he needed was another enemy. “What happened between your sister and I was an accident. Yes, I did bite her, but I was new and she was already bleeding. I couldn’t control myself.” Howard spoke in a whisper, but his tone would calm as it appeared no one was paying them any mind. “The aura isn’t contagious. The presence your sister has is of her own making. It must be something that just develops within certain witches and wizards.” This was just an educated guess, but the logic seemed sound.
“Alright...” Howard let go of the other boy if he had not already wrestled out of his grasp. “I don’t know if your sister told you about me, but I’m Howard. I need you to keep all that to yourself. Do you understand?” This was both a threat and a plea. It would be up to the younger boy on which way it went.

Intently, the young boy listened to all the information the older year had to provide. There was not much Howard had that Heinrich did not already know about her dissappearance. A dispute between Aurelia and Hadrian was not something Heinrich had never heard of. Naturally, as curious as he was, he had always questioned Aurelia about it, but was never given much of an answer other than the system of betrothals being traditional. Despite their status as siblings, there was still much Aurelia kept away from him, yet this reservation he had noticed implied a sense of maturity he quite envied. But now he only wished that she'd told him why and where she dissappeared to.
The erratic movement of the older hufflepuff jabbing a blunt but long nail at his chest turned his nerves back on. Soon, the dhampir had a vice grip on his arm, dragging him a short distance down the hall and around the corner. The older year was clearly far stronger than he was and any efforts to rid him off were futile. The helpless hufflepuff could not do anything but follow suit. Unlike what he anticipated: brute force used against him to traumatise him, instead, the older year continued speaking. Unfortunately, the stubborness that Heinrich possessed was far bigger than his tiny eleven year old body.
Wether unintentionally or not, it did not matter. Heinrich could not imagine the pain Aurelia faced to have gotten such a scar on her neck. Howard hurt her. With his arms crossed in a child-like manner, Heinrich spoke with as much assertion as he could manage, his voice even deepening a notch or two. "Or you'll what? You're not the boss of me! Nobody knows about what you've done, right?" However in only a matter of seconds, the impulsive boy wished that he could take back his words. The being before him was older and stronger.
"IfyouhurtmeIwilltellaurelia-" without much thought, the words would escape his lips, almost incomprehensibly. He was using her name to protect himself, yet already having stated that he had no idea where she was, Heinrich was unsure how effective his own little threat was. But it was the best he could do.

Howard would easily pull the younger boy to a more secluded spot of the Small Hall, but when he went to release him the boy would stand in defiance. Although he wouldn’t show it, a part of Howard would appreciate the boy for it. It was a small gesture but as he stood with arms crossed it showed that he wasn’t a push over. It reminded him of his sister. Aurelia was many things, but a coward wasn’t one of them. A true Gryffindor indeed. However, his sense of loyalty to his family definitely marked him a Hufflepuff. Too bad the situation was quickly crumbling, the pair might have gotten off on a better foot.
Howard had given Heinrich a choice. Do him a favor and keep quiet or force his hand. Many people mistook the Dhampir as just a violent person with an explosive temper. There was definitely some truth to that, but no one was just one thing. He was a person of action, allowing the situation to guide him instead of putting much thought into the process. This could swing in either direction. Often times his interactions with people were positive. The energy they brought to the table would dictate Howard's emotions and shape the course of his actions. However, there are two sides to every coin. The choice was laid out for the younger Hufflepuff and he chose confrontation.
"Did I claim be your boss!" Howard spoke in a harsh whisper as he took a step forward to press his body against Heinrich's. Establishing a physical presence was alway key in intimidation. The younger boy's next words would almost push Howard over the edge. Nobody knows about what you've done... His red eyes would pop with anger as the threat was made. Although he maintained physical dominance, Heinrich was right. Knowledge was often just a powerful as any weapon, the pen and the sword. This information was easily held over Howard and if used correctly could have forced him into submission. The very situation that always triggered his rage. A curl fist would raise, its aim directed at the younger boys face!
If you hurt me I will tell Aurelia.
Howard's balled hand would fall slack to his side. The pang of guilt that was associated with Aurelia's name would flash through him. If he was wiser, he may have recalled that Heinrich didn't currently know where his sister was, but Howard was not. He was a being driven by emotion and this particular one proved to be stronger than his anger. The thought that he was just about to harm the younger brother of the person he nearly killed was too much. Howard had finally made it to a place of neutrality with Aurelia, a young women that he had grown to admire and respect. To throw that all away now....no, he couldn't. It seemed little Heinrich had stumbled across a weak spot in the otherwise impenetrable facade that was Howard. He would take a step back, slightly hunched as if the words had been a blow to the stomach. "I'm not goin' to hurt you." His voice had soften and his tone carried a note of misery. "Listen...your sister and I...forget it. Do what ya want." Howard mumbled as he stepped to the side. The youngster was free to do as he pleased.
