"My cousin does." she confirmed with a sheepish smile, "You might've heard of him... he's managed to gain himself a little bit of an infamous reputation; Kyle Derook...or just Rook depending what you've heard." she explained. As far as Illowy was concerned, Kyle was her most trusted person. Granted, he didn't always make the best choices and tended to get himself into more fights and trouble then she would prefer; especially since Duke's death. But at his core he was a good person. She just wished he let other people see it more.@Opeila Winters
The older girl shrugged slightly with a small, awkward chuckle, "I'll have to take your word for it I guess. My mum never lets us use Muggle stuff like that; she's more traditional. Like, we have a washer and a landline and electricity, mainly because we live in Dublin, but that's about as Muggle tech as it gets. Kyle knows more about this kind of stuff then I do, honestly, so he might know what you're talking about." taking the girl's hand, she gave it a shake and a polite bow of her head, "Maybe someday on holiday one day we can meet up at Diagon Alley or something and go to Muggle London and you can show me how your window works." she suggested, taking her hand back, "I'm more of a visual learner anyway."
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

It was probably a good thing that Opeila couldn't connect that name to a person, or the mood of the conversation would have turned into a whole different direction.
The second year had met Kyle DeRook twice now and the last time had gone terrible. Unknowingly, the Gryffindor had hit her in her most vulnerable point with his words. Combined with his physical threat, it had brought Opeila to cast flipendo at him. The following night she had showed up in front of Professor Artemis Vernatis' office, bleeding, bruised and crying.
Yes, it was good that she never heard his name. "Rook... Can't say I have heard that name at all to be honest. And I slowly begin to think that it is not too hard to make oneself a reputation here in Hogwarts." She chuckled. Opeila definitely made herself one last year, astoundingly many people who Opeila had never spoken to, seemed to know her name by now.
Opeila listened to Illowy, who told her what muggle machines they had at home. "Wait really? How does that work? As far as I understood, magic disables or at least messes around with muggle electricity." Illowy said that Kyle might understand better what Opeila meant. "I feel like I haven't spoken to anyone about muggle stuff in ages.", she said, smiling a little.
The smile faded when Illowy suggested that they could meet in Diagon Alley in the Holidays and Opeila could show her how the window worked. The second year shook her head. "I- erm... Something happened in my family and I live with a different family now in another country. I doubt they would make the effort to organize a meeting with friends over the holidays." Rather the contrary, Opeila could imagine that Elora Winter, if she heard that it would make Opeila happy to see her friends, would make effort to prevent it from happening.

Illowy gave a small shrug when the other girl didn't seem to know her cousin, "That's probably for the best." she chuckled sheepishly, "If you meet him though, and he gives you any trouble, just find me and I'll set him straight." after all, if there was anyone really that could usually get through to him, it was Illowy. Ultimately, the perpetually angry Gryffindor was her best friend, and the only person she trusted completely, and typically the feeling was reciprocated.@Opeila Winters
"I mean, magic can mess with the effects of electricity, like how no one's muggle devices work here because the magic drains its power I guess because there's such a high presence of magic. But at home, there's usually just me and my mom. So some stuff, like the fridge and stuff, doesn't usually have any problems I don't think. Not that I've ever noticed, anyway. We don't depend on a bunch of technology the way Muggles do though, so if something goes wrong, it's not like we can't figure out an alternative." she tried to explain.
Opelia went on to explain her situation after Illowy had suggested a hangout outside of school, and she felt the energy shift a little, "Oh..." she really hoped she hadn't just put her foot in her mouth making such a suggestion. Hardly was she about to press the girl for more information about it; that wasn't exactly any of her business, "Well, maybe at some point they're change their minds." she tried to suggest optimistically, "Over holidays I'm pretty much always home since there's not much else better to do, so I'm always just an owl away."
I was told I was dangerous. When I asked why, they said, "Because you don't need anyone." That's when I smiled.

Opeila chuckled when Illowy said that it was probably for the best that Opeila hadn't met her cousin so far. That... That was a joke, right? Or was there actually something strange or dangerous to every other kid in the castle? Well... Maybe really not that much of a joke. The older girl told her to find her if Rook caused any trouble. "Is he such a troublesome person?", Opeila asked, a little amused.
Illowy proceeded to explain to Opeila how magic messed with muggle technology, but only disabled it if there was a lot of it present. "Oh, I see. I didn't spend that much of a thought on it so far." But yes, of course it made sense. The second year had been living with her magical mother and grandmother all her life, and their magic had never completely disabled their muggle devices. But then also her dad had banished almost all magic from their house, so...
It made the little girl smile, when Illowy tried to cheer her up, saying that her guardians would maybe change her mind eventually. Opeila wanted to believe that too, it was not like she ruled it out completely, but if such a change truly came, it would surely not be coming from Lady Winter's side. Even more, she pretty much invited Opeila to write to her over the holidays. It was equally weird and heartwarming to the second year- the two girls were barely acquaintances!
"Thank you.", Opeila said wholeheartedly, "Also, I am sorry for interrupting you. I was actually going to go to the library so... yeah, I should do that. It was nice to meet you." With another smile Opeila would leave the room, unless Illowy stopped her.
Opeila leaves the Thread unless she is stopped.
