1st Mystical Creatures PV MC Club Closed

Eirian listened to everyone's introductions with genuine interest even though she has heard some of it before. She chuckled a little bit quietly at Simon's pronoun preference joke and made a mental note about the creatures that Kaz cited as his favourite: kitsunes.

"I think demiguises are cool," she agreed with Cade, "I think I heard somewhere that Mr Scamander had a demiguise he cared for."

Now that everyone had introduced themselves, she thought hard for a moment on what to do now. She settled on outlining some general hopes for the club since she didn't really know what else to do. Having never been in charge of anything other than herself before, she had no idea what club leaders were meant to do.

"So, now that we all know each other sort of, welcome to mystical creatures club! If any questions come up, Cade or I can probably help you. Personally, I'm not entirely sure what we're going to do in general, but I am hoping we have fun and learn about some creatures together as friends." Her welcome blurb was genuine and cheery.

"My ideas thus far are possibly better for later dedicated meetings, but I was thinking that we could try to find some creatures," she was well aware that this idea could potentially get her and whoever else was onboard into trouble, "The forest and lake and even parts of the grounds are supposed to have magical creatures around so I think it would be more fun, and probably educational, to actually see them rather than just read and talk about them."

She paused and looked around, her eyes settling briefly on Kaz's Japanese book, "Oh! The other thought I had was that, if he doesn't mind, I don't want to force him into anything, maybe for a meeting Kazuo could teach all of us about some of the Japanese creatures. Er, yokai? Is that what they're called?" Eirian knew her pronunciation of the word was probably painfully European but tried her best to get it right.

Aaron smiled at Kazuo's words. "I do love hot chocolate. But if I went to the badgers, I'd have to leave Eirian alone. I can't lose my partner in crime," she laughed. "But if you're inviting me over for a warm cup of cocoa, I'll happily accept."

When Simon mentioned his shared interest in dragons, Aaron leaned forward again excitedly. She welcomed a fellow dragon enthusiast. Maybe they could do some research together. She also hadn't known you could train dragons, but it made sense. And if you could train yourself a dragon, it made sense that you could ride it too.

"Dragon buddies!" she called to Simon with a big grin and a thumbs up.

She also perked up at Cade's mention of Demiguises. She'd never heard of them before, but what would a creature need invisibility and predicting the future for? What kind of habitats do they live in? She had been curious before, but now she wanted to investigate and research. She was surprised how excited this club was making her for learning.

She clapped wildly after Eirian's welcome speech, ready to actually go out and find some creatures. "Do you think they'll let us take a field trip into the forest? I know during the welcome ceremony they were all 'The Forbidden Forest is dangerous. Don't you dare try going in' and all, but this school is so old, I'm sure they've got a good idea what's inside. We have a grounds keeper too, right? They must know something. It's their job, after all" she said, wondering what mysterious creatures were hiding in the trees. She'd heard there were centaurs, unicorns, and at one point even a giant. The forest seemed as good a place as any to start their adventures.

Kazuo listened to Cade with a nod of agreement as he spoke about demiguises. “Demiguises are very interesting. I am curious how their prophecy ability works. What kind of prophecies do they tell? Can they even speak? How would someone benefit from capturing it?” He turned to his book, flipping through the pages to one that was bookmarked. He turned it toward them to show the short entry on the kitsune.



“Well kitsune are... “ He chuckled shaking his head. “Kitsune is the Japanese word for any fox. But we also use it when talking about the magical foxes. A kitsune is born as a fox but as kitsune get older, they grow into their magical nature. So there was a time when we believed that any fox could be a kitsune. They are said to be able to do magic, mostly the stories say that they are able to create illusions and shapeshift but sometimes they can summon blue fire. We call it kitsune-bi, foxfire. The older a kitsune is, the more tails it has. The oldest kitsune have nine tails. There are many stories about them, some good and some evil. In China and Korea, kitsune are mostly considered evil but in Japan, we see them more as tricksters. Some are good, some are bad. It’s interesting, I think they fall more into the classification of ‘beings’ than ‘beasts’ because they are sentient even though they are technically animals.”

He turned his attention to Eirian when the Slytherin asked if he’d be willing to talk about yokai. He gave her a slow nod. “My mother would probably be better to ask since she actually worked as a magizoologist but I can try to tell you what she would tell me about when I was growing up. I find it interesting to compare the yokai to the magical beasts from other areas of the world. Like how we talked about the mermaids and the ningyo.”

He listened to Aaron’s questions then gave a shrug. “They might take us into the forest when we’re older but I doubt us first-years will get the chance. I was wondering if we could talk to the groundskeeper or the Care of Magical Creatures Professor and volunteer to help with any of the creatures. If we show initiative, they might consider it…”
