The grounds were not often bright and sunny during winter, but today was one of those days.

Kayden pushed open the doors of the castle, waltzing outside with gusto. He whistled an old Irish folk song, breathing in the fresh morning air. It wasn't a very busy morning, and Kayden liked it that way. He enjoyed being able to walk without the distasteful look of others.

He had wandered about halfway across when he noticed a girl, his age, crying on a bench. While he assumed it was none of his business, a small part of him wanted to know what was going on. An even bigger part of him wanted to cheer her up.

He crossed over to her and sat down. She had a pretty face and red hair, which reflected the sun into his eyes.

He squinted, then spoke. "Hey- uh- hey!" He tapped on her shoulder.
She didn't stop.
Kayden fiddled around in the pockets of his robe, looking for something, anything that could be used to cheer her up.

He felt something warm and came up with a slightly squished chocolate frog. He stuck his hand out towards the girl, offering it.
"Here take this. It's way too nice of a day to be crying!"

A bad day. A horrid, absolutely dreadful day. Everyone had one, right? Valencia seemed to have an abundance of them, always striking her when she's least expecting it despite always trying to detect them before it happens. There was a ringing in her ear, a piercing noise that didn't seem to be there before. Bloody tears pooled in the corners of her eyes, causing her to see red as she proceeded to walk silently, faint words escaping her lips. Eyes followed the young redhead as she made her path, these of which she disregarded.

Valencia fled to the grounds, the vast open area primarily clear and vacant. It was often she ventured here, the stone bench having held many memories of Valencia silently whispering to herself during dull mornings. Today, however, was not a day for talking. For fucks sake that was the downright last thing she wished to do. Of course, wishes are hardly ever granted at Hogwarts, as the friendly voice of a boy approached her just seconds after she'd sat down. Her body seemed to freeze, tears that once flowed endlessly now slowing down. Too close.. The boy was too close to her, and certainly too close to witness her blood-streaked face.

She turned her head away from his view, shrugging his tap off. "Sorreh, this bench is taken I'm afraid." She choked out, waiting to feel his presence leave her side.

"Here take this. It's way too nice of a day to be crying!"

A scoff was let out from Valencia, wondering what he possibly knew about today being "good". However angry she wanted to be at this boy, to release her frustration, she knew his words were not ill-willed. Previously clenched fists returned to normal, shoving them in her lap to prevent herself from touching the student.
Upon lifting her head, she met a pair of turquoise shaded eyes, the boy that they belonged to appearing sympathetic. She jerked her head away, wiping the vermillion tears away from her face with a swipe of her sleeve. This. This was not what she needed, a gentlemanly boy trying to comfort the ever so distressed female. Even though she could come to appreciate his efforts, the half-breed wanted nothing more than to be left alone. It was not in her interests to explain the predicament she found herself in, nor was it in his quite frankly.

"Mm.. Thank ya."

Was she crying, blood? He backed away instinctively, then drew nearer incredulously. He quickly realized he was staring and looked away.
"I'm sorry." He whispered.
He patted her awkwardly on the back trying to comfort her.
He wasn't quite sure where to go from here, but he had already committed to cheering her up, so she pushed forward.
"Do you... do you want to talk about it?" He drew closer to her, trying to gauge her emotions.

Women are so confusing. he thought, as she grabbed the chocolate frog out of his hand. He never quite understood how easily they could break down into hysterics.

He was out of chocolate frogs, which were his main weapon for keeping people happy. The sun seemed to have left the sky, apparently noticing the seriousness of the situation. A dark overcast hung over them, as scarlet tears splattered against the bench, staining the oak wood.

"Hey, hey perk up. C'mon what happened. It couldn't have been that bad right? Look, you can trust me. I promise!"

He was trying hard to keep her spirits up. Partly because he wanted her to feel better, but mostly because she was staining his robes with her tears.

Her crying stopped, not because the boy asked her to, but because she was causing a scene. She figured it was surely abnormal to those who had never encountered a Dhampir before, a new feeling rising within her as she watched his expression shift from a look of confusion to fear. Might as well be the reaction she obtained from people, as what else would a normal person do in a situation like his?

His apology couldn't have meant less to her, "sorry" just being a word others offered when they didn't have anything else. Her breathing hitched as he inched closer, her natural instincts having her scoot farther away until she found herself on the edge of the bench. This wasn't an act of playing hard to get, trying to get the boy to persist. She truly did not want him here, especially not while she had gotten tears on his robe.

Then as if a switch had gone off inside the little Dhampir's brain, her eyes turned sharp and narrowed. "Not that bad.." she said in a whisper. A stale, faint chuckle following. What did he know? What could this little Hufflepuff, human know what was bad and what was not? She could hardly trust her goddamn self, let alone the intrusive boy she'd just met. Yet still, he persisted, edged until he couldn't edge anymore.

"Trust ya? Trust you?" The repetition of words was more for her sake, trying to convince herself he wasn't serious. "What? So ya can go and tell it to tha next damsel in distress?" Her bitter side was showing, evidently. She felt anger rise in her chest, the fear that everyone was against her creeping its way back into her thoughts. "You don't understand. I'm a monster, ya 'ear?." And although her words spoke as if she were confident in herself, Valencia's voice quivered. She had said what they were both thinking, only she didn't have remorse for saying it aloud.

"Woah, woah settle down. I'm just here to help, stop getting at my throat."
He wasn't quite sure whether or not it was worth it to stay.

He kept persisting to get her to tell him what was going on.

"What? So ya can go tell it to tha next damsel in distress?"

Kayden rolled his eyes and was going to speak, but the girl cut him off.

"You don't understand. I'm a monster ya 'ear?"
While the girl had been getting to the point of annoying him, he suddenly a surge of sympathy.
"No, no you're not. Who said that?" He couldn't help but feel sorry for her.
He had never really been an outcast. He wasn't a pure-blood, but he wasn't a muggle-born either.

He wasn't a different race or anything like that, so he couldn't relate. "Look let's just talk about what happened. Sometimes it's good to vent you know?"

The girl straightened her glasses and wiped her eyes. The wind rustled and leaves from dying trees flew past them, and Kayden pulled his coat closer.

He looked up at the angry sky. He hoped to God that it wouldn't rain.
Oh please no....

Her once aggressive expression turned into one of sincerity as she'd realized her mistake, knowing full well she shouldn't have been so quick to snap at him. While pushing a hand through her auburn locks, she tried to nod. "Ya right, I shouldn't of.." Her voice stopped short, as if her vocal cords had been stripped of her right then and there. She couldn't think of the words to say to him, apologies had never been her thing and they probably will never be. When asked about who made the bastardly claim against her, she shrugged, not touching on the subject further. No one needed to say it to her face for her to know the truth. And to think, she'd been so proud of herself and who she'd become merely a month ago. Funny how easily people's confidence can be crashed, don't you think? Her head swayed back and forth for a moment, the realization of her idiocy laid right there in front of her.

"Sometimes it's good to vent you know?"

As she sucked in a breath, she glanced over at him once more. Vent.. A silly concept, really, especially considering when it was usually out of pity. Though the longer her thoughts consumed her as they sat in silence, the longer she contemplated it.
Although she nodded, Valencia couldn't agree that it was all that easy. "I wouldn't know." The words were faint, as if she were embarrassed to be talking about such a topic. A part of her was, the idea of relying on someone for moral support desperate to her. Though that was a normal thing for people do, wasn't it? Why was it so difficult for her to accept the damn help obviously being offered to her?

"People happened.. People who see the entire Dhampir race as some kind of murderous breed. That's what happened." Valencia's soft features started to crack, her nails tapping against the hard stone bench to help distract herself. She prayed to god this boy wasn't like the others, putting her in such a vulnerable position all in the act of a devious ruse.

"People happened.. People who see the entire Dhampir race as some kind of murderous breed. That's what happened."
He watched as her emotions begin to crumble into shambles, and she began to rap her nails on the hard oak bench, making a satisfying clicking sound that could be heard far away.

She was clearly embarrassed, and Kayden felt sorry for her, though he knew there wasn't anything he could do about it. Discrimination between breeds was a big deal in today's modern world. People saw vampires, werewolves, the like as savages, not fit to roam the earth among their human companions.

He paused, taking a breath of silence.
"I know I just met you, but I can tell that you are not like that. I don't judge people based on their breed. That's not the Hufflepuff way. That's not my way."
He stood up.
"Let's take a walk. It may have turned into a stormy day, but I sort of like the cool air."
The girl was clearly bitter, but that wouldn't stop him from making sure her day got better. He straightened his jacket once more, the stuck out his hand, ready to help her get up, and go for a walk.

She nodded silently at his kind words, having no choice but to believe him. He didn't seem like the type to lie, nor taunt for that matter. Plus, the likelihood of a Hufflepuff purposefully lying in attempts to harm her was next to impossible. Her tears had dried and features began to soften again, offering a small smile to the boy by her side. It wasn't a large one, if anything it was barely noticeable, though genuine all the same.

"Hate ta break it to ya, but just 'cus somebody's cryin' don't mean they can't be dangerous." She delivered the statement as a joke, though her words still rang true. A memory flashed in her brain, a burst of white light and then the image of a young man. She cringed slightly, red hair swishing back and forth as she shook her head to rid herself of such imagery. If the boy were to notice, it'd be made very clear she didn't wish to speak about it. Instead, she placed a hand in his as she stood up, quickly drawing it away once able.

"But 'ey, if it does rain-" Her eyes drifted to the sky, holding her gaze on the grey clouds for a moment. "Dancin' in it is always fun, yeh?" A half-truth, since she'd actually never done it before. She'd read about it though, and it always seemed like a fun experience. Sure, getting drenched on accident is never pleasant, but the will to do something can make all the difference.

"Hate to break it to ya, but just 'cus somebody's cryin' don't mean they can't be dangerous."

Kayden smiled.
"Most people who are crying need someone to talk to. "
He said.
Some would call him naive, but Kayden truly just believed that it was important to look on the bright side of life, even when for someone else it was dark.

She asked his name.
"Kayden Lind. I'm from England."

They began to walk the grounds. The clouds above seemed to get angrier and angrier, as the overcast sky hung low, ready to shed their many tears.

He had a hard time finding a topic of conversation. In situations like this, silence wasn't exactly golden.
He cast a sideways glance at her. He wanted to bring up her situation, but he felt like now wasn't a good time.
"So, where are you from? Your accent is strong."
He looked at her extremely pale skin.
It had to be a place with zero sun. He thought of any places such as this, where an accent like that could have come from, but he came up with nothing.

He knew that she was touchy, maybe it would have been better to avoid subjects like this.

"England, eh? Figures." His accent was obvious, similar and alike to most everyone else from London. "Names Valencia, dunno what my parents were thinkin' on that one." She shrugged, the basis behind her name truly unknown. Her father had told her he wanted to give her a real Vampiric name, something like Haven or Salem. She smiled at the thought of him, eager for spring break when she could rush home. On that topic, it dawned on her she'd have to make a difficult decision when the time came. Would I tell them I'm having a hard time? Letting her walls down was not something the girl often did, and if anything did everything in her power to do the opposite.

"Ah, I was born in Edinburgh, spent alotta time in Manc though." She stated plainly, her origin story not much of a thing she cared about hiding. Despite being homeschooled in the manor, young Valencia would flee to Manchester with her father during the winters. She picked up on their accent rather than the thick, gruff one that resonated from her home town. When she was in Scotland, she was forbidden to leave unless accompanied. Not because she was of the utmost importance, but because it was far too dangerous for a girl of her nature to wander around unsupervised. Due to this she hadn't the chance to switch back to her native accent.

Valencia felt his eyes on her, though she disregarded it, no longer feeling embarrassed. Her truth had already been out, therefore there was no need to shy away from it now. "But ah-" She cleared her throat, the clouds enclosing the sky just making the grounds appear darker. "Dead good chance is' gonna rain soon."
As if on command, a small droplet of water fell upon the girl's sleeve. It was bound to get worse from here, their best interests being to run inside. However her eyes flicked to Kayden's, almost asking with a single glance what he planned on doing.
