The Picnic Lunch Finished

She rolled away and lept up. She said she would see him tomorrow, then began storming off towards the castle. Kayden stood there in shock for a moment, confused. Just a moment ago, she had been acting like she was ready! Kayden jumped up, tripping on his blanket. He picked himself up again and began to chase after her.
"Hey! Jenny! Where are you going?" She didn't respond. He continued to jog after her until he was left breathless. He caught up to her, grabbing her arm, and whipped her around as gently as he could, but was still nervous that he had harmed her in some way.

He realized that they were way overly close, and he felt weird in a way, as after that exchange, he wasn't really ready anymore.

"Hey what was that?"

He searched her eyes for something, anything that indicated what her intent was. "What's wrong come on, tell me."

He felt the old awkwardness coming back, and he hated that. He thought they were past that. Was this the end? Was their relationship over? Why was she acting like this?
Kayden's head swum with these questions. He hoped this wasn't the end.

He caught up and spun her around. "I didn't mean for that, I just panicked is all. It's, I don't know. Yes, I think we should be something, I don't know why I panicked. Really, I didn't."
She backed up. "It's getting late. I should get back and so should you, Kayden." She started to walk back. "Thanks for tonight."

She started walking back, wondering if she ruined everything. She turned around. "Good night." She walked back to the castle. What had she done? Why? Kayden looked so confused and she felt really bad. She was going to make it right, somehow. She would see him tomorrow, she was sure of it. Things weren't going to be awkward, would they? That would stink. She hoped Kayden knew what she meant and that she thought they should be something. SO why had she panicked? Maybe it was too soon. They shouldn't kiss so soon in their relationship if they even were going to have one. She sighed.

What would Kayden think about this? She crossed her arms against the cold. She shook her thoughts away, she knew things were going to be alright. Kayden was kind and he was sure to understand.

Kayden stood there, finding it impossible to understand.
He sat down in the grass, the stars twinkling above him. How long had he been sitting here for? With her?

He watched as the sun came up above the horizon.
Apparently a very long time. Now it was awkward. Very awkward. He should have kept it slow, should have maintained his composure. She wasn't ready, and apparently, neither was he. He pulled out a blade of grass and fiddled with it in his fingers. It was delicate, pretty, innocent.

He crushed it in between his fingers.
He dropped it, letting it fall to the ground.

The sun pierced his gaze, making him squint.
When he began, he felt great, now he felt like a piece of junk.

Standing up, he walked back to the picnic and began picking up all of the stuff he had laid out. Looking out, he saw the giant squid beyond the horizon, staring him down.

"I'm sorry. I know I failed. I got greedy."

He grabbed the empty box of strawberries and stuffed them back into the box.
He grabbed the basket, then walked back up to the castle.

He had failed. Very badly.
