Helping Hands
@Gabriella Haworth 24 January, 2021Gia's smile grew bigger and even more sincere when she saw how happy Gabriella looked. "Of course I wouldn't disagree!" she exclaimed, still making sure to keep her voice down as much as possible. "Also - why would I think that you're weird?" the first year was genuinely confused about this, because to her, the Ravenclaw seemed normal. And smart. Very smart. She told the other girl this out loud. "You're perfectly normal - but you're very smart, too. Much smarter than me," she said with a small, sheepish smile.
The young Gryffindor didn't exactly think that she wasn't smart, it was just that she felt like she was better at different things. Pranks, for one. She knew exactly how to set it up and how to escape easily, if it ever came to that. But when she was trying to write an essay for History of Magic class, well. . . that was a little different, and that was why she was so glad that Gabriella had agreed to help her a while ago. They were also actual friends now, since they both knew how the other felt, which was nice.
Gabby said that she could finish her conclusion first, then read each others and fix the small things that needed to be fixed, and Gia nodded. She also suggested that they go somewhere other than the Study Room to talk once they finished, and the brunette grinned. "Sure! That sounds perfect." she told her friend. "Hmm. . . what about. . . well, dinner is soon, kind of, we could go to the Great Hall after, if you'd like." Gia offered. After thinking about it for a few seconds, she nodded again and turned back to her work, determined to get it done quickly. She wanted to have plenty of time to talk to the Ravenclaw, and for that to happen, she needed to finish soon.
Dipping the tip of her quill into the ink bottle for what seemed like the hundredth time, Gia stared down at her parchment paper as she tried to think of what to write for her conclusion. It should be the easiest part, she thought to herself, since it's the shortest. . . With this mindset, the eleven year old focused and was finished with it in under three minutes. Reading it over one time before turning back to Gabriella, Gia found and fixed one error in her writing. "I'm finished!" she said, looking back at the other girl, her smile still on her face. "Here's mine," she handed Gabby her essay. "And I'll read yours. Just the conclusion, right?"427 words

Helping Hands
Gabriella blushed as Gia told her she was smart. Personally, she didn't think she was smart at all, just good at writing essays, but if Gia wanted to believe she was smart, Gabriella wasn't about to try and contradict her. "Thanks," she mumbled, glad that Gia seemed genuinely confused that she considered herself weird. "I guess I'm just not used to it... I was bullied quite a lot in primary school. But I guess most Hogwarts students were bullied more than Muggle kids."
It wasn't that she assumed no bullying went on at Hogwarts, but there was likely to be a lot less of it, Gabriella decided. The occasional fight might break out, and they might be more serious because magic would be involved, but she hadn't seen any cases of actual bullying. She put that down to the fact that most of them had probably been bullied in primary school - or if they hadn't gone to primary school, bullied by the local Muggle kids.
When Gia mentioned eating together in the Great Hall, initially Gabriella was excited. "Great idea!" she exclaimed. She noticed that Gia paused for a moment, and Gabriella wondered if she should say anything more, but she decided against it as the Gryffindor dipped her quill back in her ink pot and began to write again.
As Gia wrote, a thought occurred to Gabriella. She groaned inwardly, not wanting to disturb her friend until she had finished. They would have to meet somewhere else - or maybe even meet tomorrow, seeing as dinner was so soon! No, Gabriella couldn't deal with that. With all this excitement, she would never be able to sleep that night, but at least if she spent more time with Gia it would be a happy excitement, not an uncomfortable one.
"I've finished!" cried Gia suddenly. Gabriella opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. They needed to finish the homework first...
Hastily, Gabriella scanned the parchment she saw in front of her. It was good - some of the sentences were worded differently from how Gabriella would have done it, but that didn't really matter. She definitely wasn't going to mention it. "It's good," Gabriella said quickly. "Great, we've finished! Listen, though," she added, her voice assuming a more serious tone. "I don't think we'll be able to eat together. We'll have to sit at different house tables, won't we..."

Helping Hands
@Gabriella Haworth 24 January, 2021A concerned frown appeared on the first year's face when she heard that her friend had been bullied back in primary school. "Oh, that's terrible!" she said. "I've always hated bullies. . . it's like, what do they have against all their innocent victims?!" Gia, although she had never actually been bullied herself, had close friends in Manchester who had been. She'd actually stepped in and yelled at the person causing them to feel bad multiple times, but the girl didn't say that out loud, for she didn't want to sound like she was bragging when she actually wasn't. Not that Gabby would think that about me, Gia thought, since the Ravenclaw seemed to be very kind.
The other first year seemed to be very excited upon hearing Gia's suggestion, which made the Gryffindor happy. "Thanks," she replied, a smile appearing on her face. It seemed as if she had been smiling the whole time she was talking to Gabriella so far, and when she realized this the eleven year old was very grateful that the other girl had wanted to be friends as well. I mean, if someone is able to make you smile so much, they're most likely someone who really gets you and someone who you should become friends with. Gia thought to herself. Although. . . she reconsidered, and revised her thought from earlier. If that person is able to make you really smile, not just, like, laugh at a joke or something. Yes, that was better. Plenty of people had made her laugh in life, but not all of them were actually people she liked or wanted to become friends with.
When she announced that she was finished, the brunette immediately noticed the strange expression on the Ravenclaw's face and how she looked as if she was about to say something but then changed her mind and said something else. "What is it?" Gia asked, but Gabby had already moved on to looking over the conclusion she'd written. A little confused, the Gryffindor girl waited impatiently for her to finish. When Gabriella was about halfway through, the first year realized that she needed to read her friend's essay as well, and she picked up Gabby's parchment.
Before Gia could even finish the third sentence, her friend interrupted her reading and told her the essay looked great. "Thank you!" the eleven year old replied. "Yours looks really good as well," she added, after skimming the last few lines. Still wondering why Gabby suddenly seemed to be rushing through the end of their homework, she gave the Ravenclaw a befuddled look. Luckily, the other girl explained quite quickly after that, and Gia didn't have to wait for far too long. It took a few seconds for what she said to actually sink in, but then the Gryffindor sighed.
"You're right. . . Although, I do think I've seen some people sitting together even though they aren't necessarily in the same house." she added. "If we can't eat dinner together, then. . . what do you want to do? I guess we can meet up tomorrow, but. . ." she hesitated. It was one of those instances where just a couple hours later seemed to be so far away. Gia glanced over at Gabby, wondering what she thought.540 words

Helping Hands
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Gia was right; sometimes students from different houses mixed at dinner, but Gabriella wasn't sure if they were allowed, and she was particularly frightened of getting told off. It's now or never, she said to herself. Well - now or tomorrow, but minor details...
"Ok then," she said, "if we get down there early, nobody'll notice one of us isn't sitting with our house. It'll be fine."And besides, what's the worst that could happen? Detention? Gabriella snorted to herself. Almost everyone she knew had found themselves in detention at one point or another. It was bound to happen to her at some point, and probably not today.
She put her homework in her school satchel and went to move her chair back to the table she had originally been sitting at before she started collaborating with Gia. Gabriella decided working with Gia had definitely helped, and she had done it a lot quicker than she would have done otherwise, too. She was generally very good at procrastinating and getting distracted - which was not a good skill to have - and usually ended up doing anything other than what she was supposed to be concentrating on. Reading the bulletin board, doodling in the corner of her parchment, tying her hair... But when she was working with Gia, it was completely different, and she was much more productive.
She walked back to the table where Gia still stood and smiled. "Thanks," she grinned. "That was really fun." Before she knew how to stop herself, Gabriella flung her arms round her friends neck and hugged her tightly. It was a pretty awkward position, Gabriella being the height she was, and she quickly drew away again, unsure if Gia would be ok with it. After all, they hadn't really spoken yet about themselves as people, and Gabriella had no clue whether Gia was a hugging person or not.
"We should probably go and put our books back in our dorms," said Gabriella. "I'll meet you in the Great Hall in... ten minutes?" She swung her satchel around her shoulder and skipped off, out of the Study Room.
When Gabriella got into her dorm, she opened the door wide and squealed. She didn't care if anyone saw her and thought she was weird - she was the happiest she had ever felt since joining Hogwarts.
