2021, Stage 2 Group B: Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff

Maria was sweating now.

Stray hairs had stuck to her forehead and she took deeper breaths. Once again she’d been the target of a double attack, both of which she managed to avoid. She managed a sigh of relief as she saw that they’d managed to finally land hits.

She guessed she wasn’t as clumsy as she thought. In the back of her mind she knew that she they didn’t have the luxury of celebrating yet, there was still a long way to go. A little steadier now, and much more determined, she prepared for the next flurry of spells.

Come on! Katrina nearly screamed, again her spell missed, and the opposing team had both gone for Calanthe... and they succeeded. Suddenly, the tension was broken, the suspended reality where Katrina doubted that any spell would hit home. Katrina stole a concerned glance at Calanthe, making sure she was alright.

Enough messing around. Katrina looked to her wrist to see the bracelet she'd made. She'd actually made one anonymously for everyone on the team. A good luck charm. Let's hope it didn't fail her again.

As the familiar feeling started working its way up her sinuses, Calanthe cursed the gods for refusing to spare the lions any luck. To be hit with the bogies curse two duels in a row was somehow a worse feeling than the slam of the Flipendo against her body. Catching Katrina's eye, Calanthe shot a quick thumbs up. There was still a while before the full effects of the curse started to creep in and just enough time for the lions to change the direction of the tides.

The tension had reached its zenith. It shattered with a blow by the Hufflepuff team, who maintained this momentum, relentless in their charge. Maria now turned the infamous bogey curse on Katrina. Her aim was dead-on, striking the Gryffindor square in the chest with a bolt of nauseating green. In mere seconds, the witch would feel that foreboding pressure at the bridge of her nose, slime building in the sinuses. Emboldened by their breakthrough, though careful not to get carried away, Autumn aimed a Flipendo for Calanthe. The results were the same. Once again, the witch would feel the forceful spell slam into her. But neither the pain of battering spells, nor the stomach-turning sensation of slime starting to drip from her nose, was enough to deter the lioness for long. She gave Autumn a taste of her own medicine, firing her Flipendo for a retaliatory smack. Not one to be held back by a bit of congestion, Katrina's chestnut wand carved a telltale triangle in the air. Then came a burst of light with searing heat, and the Incendio Duo barelled frightfully across the piste, striking Autumn and catching fire to her rightmost robe sleeve. Watching from the sidelines, Pericles' mirror-like eyes flickered with the fire's reflection, belied the thrill that his guarded expression tried to hide. It was a wonder to see combative magic at work, more so to see the witches finally overcoming the doubt planted by former failures, throwing themselves out of despair and into the duel. It was impossible to predict exactly which team would come out on top. This was becoming a fearsome spectacle.

What?

Calanthe could not remember the last time one of her spells hit its target. She was sure that it happened a few times in her first duel, but the effects of the bogies made her memory foggy... not unlike right now. Already feeling her sight becoming hazy, she wiped away the newest strand of snot leaking from her nose and repositioned her weakening legs. In lieu of her previous anxieties, something resembling satisfaction unfurled in her chest. Even the painful slap of a Flipendo could not take her mind off the round. As unwilling as she was to shake the feeling away, the fight was not over yet and the lion gripped her wand with new resolve.

Maria was beginning to think this would be a pattern for their rest of their dueling careers.

They’d been in a duel twice now, and both times their opponents had used Incendio.

Given that this round Katrina had used Incendio Duo but the premise was still there. Perhaps Hogwarts students just really liked fire.

Her eyes widened as Autumn’s sleeve caught fire and she took a hit from a Flipendo. Perhaps tag teaming one person from a team at a time was a thing with this team. She was worried about her teammate, but worry would not do much if she did not do something.

Autumn let out the breath she had been holding as she watched the spark leave her wand and... not miss her target. Okay, this was going good, this was going great. They could do this, they could- aaaand she was being hit. She began attempting to move out of the way, but she was too late, the spell striking her in the chest and knocking her back. Attempting to regain her breath and prepare her next spell, she got up, realising now that she had been knocked on the floor.

She turned quickly to see whether things were going better for Maria, only to see that they were, and that her attack on Katrina had worked, hitting her square in the chest. Autumn mouthed a quick congratulations, but doubted Maria could see. Then, she turned to Katrina. Katrina who seemed to have just aimed her wand at her. More specifically, her cloak. Autumn looked down at her cloak. It was on fire.

Calanthe first felt pressure, then a trickle, and now the snot was starting to ooze out steadily. Her partner was only suffering the second stage of the curse, but she was truly starting to feel the brunt of it. When she took aim at Autumn, not only was her aim off, the Hufflepuff anticipated being targeted. She managed to leap out of the Knockback Jinx's path with a nimble maneuver. It would be her last act in this duel, as she was immediately caught up in another Incendio Duo from Katrina. The blaze had nearly missed. Yet it was enough, catching the edge of her robe, which the fire greedily began to spread across. Her pain was prolonged, a new burn striking up just as the last one went out. Maria retaliated on her teammate's behalf, blasting Calanthe with a well-aimed Incendio, though it was too late. Autumn succumbed to her injuries and collapsed to the stage.

"Ceasefire!" Pericles approached the stage with both arms raised, wand in hand, closing in on Autumn's side of the stage. The referee cast a quick "Extinguo," and although her skin and robes suffered scorches, the blaze was snuffed out. A pair of (NPC) assistants raced in to lift her onto a stretcher, carting the unconscious witch off to the infirmary. This was done in swift succession to prevent pausing the duel for too long, lest the Gryffindors lose precious time to the bogey curse. It was to be a facedown between two deteriorating lionesses and a lone badger. The moment Autumn was out of harm's way, Pericles backed away and barked "Resume!"

Hyperfixated on the streak of light leaving her wand and avoiding its target completely, Calanthe almost missed Katrina's perfect accuracy. Gods, she's hard-carrying this duel. Why am I even here? Though, with the sickly feeling clouding a new wave of enjoyment in her chest, the witch could not blame herself too much for the miss. She was giddy now, witnessing for the first time, someone from the opposing team being eliminated. If she wasn't so preoccupied with trying to keep her snot from dripping all over the floor, the lion cub would be bouncing on her feet. Though, even the idea of doing so made her woozy. Effects from the bogies curse or the Flipendos and Incendio sent her way? Who knows? I'll be a super-soaker for those spells if I have to.
