January 30th, 2021.The Great Lake wasn't a place Everly visited too often. Sure, she'd been on the boats when they'd arrived, and sure, maybe she was a teenie bit afraid of the legends of the squid inside the Lake. But come on, who wasn't afraid of big slimy stuff?
Nonetheless, compared to places such as the Library or the corridors, Everly hadn't been at the Great Lake since. But if it was the Gryffindor's goal to explore every inch of Hogwarts, so be it.
The snowfall that year had been especially large. Either that, or Everly wasn't used to walking around the Hogwarts grounds, bundled up in covers and layers to protect her from the cold. There had been more snow in December, and it was fun to wake up to a snowy Christmas with a four-poster bed. Everly had to get used to that too.
Everly hurried down the grounds, leaving a track of steps in the snow behind her as she walked. The Great Lake looked more like a big puddle of blueish water in the morning sun, and Everly had to admit that the picture was pretty. She stopped by the tree, probably as far as she could get, kicking snow up as she came to a stop. Any passerby who just happened to be there would look at her with a weird look, but Everly snuck a look and when she was sure there wasn't anyone, she plopped down in the snow.
It was cold.
"Dear, Great Big Squid," she began, figuring she'd have to start somewhere. "Either you're good, or you're evil. Don't kill me."

The brisk winter air struck Kaydens face with a gust of wind. While he liked the cold more than the searing heat of July, it was a little extra freezing today. He pulled his coat closer in as he walked across the grounds. He passed the barren trees and headed towards the Great Lake. He often went there to clear his head, doing a lap or two around the water. On warmer days, he would often see the Great Squid basking in the sun, but today it wouldn't be likely to see it. He walked into vision of the lake and noticed a girl, his age, kneeling at the foot of the water.
At first, Kayden couldn't tell what she was doing. He saw her muttering to herself. Perhaps she's practicing her incantations for charms? He walked over to her. Kayden heard her mentioning the giant squid. She began to inch forward. She was good looking and had a Gryffindor pendant attached to her shirt.
He began to jog over.
"Hey what are you doing?" It's much too cold to go swimming you know."
Kayden plopped down under a tree, not far from her.
"I'm Kayden Lind, Hufflepuff."
He hoped he had not disturbed her.

seerIt was the little things that annoyed her.
Like, for example, a person interrupting her deep concentration.
"I'm not going swimming," she said rather snappishly as a response, concentration still on the water, watching for any signal that there was a squid in there.
Quickly recounting her words, and realizing she sounded quite mean, she twisted around in her spot to face the person speaking to her. "Oh - um... sorry about that," Everly said, an attempt to smile sheepishly in apology gone wrong. "What are you doing by the Lake?" she asked, before she turned around to face the waters again, watching the movement and trees by the Lake as the wind blew past them, and the frozen water. The scene was peaceful to her, even in the winter and cold snow. Everly used her hand to pick up a handful of snow, watching it crumble through her fingers, wind blowing her hair in her face.
"I'm Everly, by the way," she said by way of introduction, after she waited for his response to her question. "I'm in Gryffindor," she added as an afterthought, spotting the Hufflepuff emblem on his robes, before noting to herself that it was pretty obvious by her own robes.───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────

The girl introduced herself as Everly.
Nice name Kayden thought, before she moved on to questions.
He noticed how snappish the girl was as if she was constantly annoyed to be in your presence. However, after a moment or two, she seemed to recover from her bad mood.
"What are you doing by the lake?" She asked, a little bit of the old snappishness lingering on the words.
Kayden felt a bit defensive but knew that he shouldn't. He had interrupted the girl, and that was his fault. Putting on his nicest face, he thought carefully about how to respond.
"I come here to think... and to read... and to talk to the giant squid."
What did he say? God, he was such an idiot.
"I mean, I don't talk with him, it's more like... a diary, I vent my thoughts to him. You know if a squid could be a diary. He's a very good listener."
All of this came out very fast. He realized suddenly that he probably looked like the biggest idiot she had ever seen.
After all, she couldn't have met many people who pour at their greatest hopes and dreams to something that doesn't listen.

seerEverly wrinkled her nose in thought. What were diaries again? Weren't they some kind of Muggle, childish thing where you write stuff about your crushes and romance in a journal decorated with stickers? How could a squid be a diary?
"I don't think giant squids will have the patience to listen," she said drily. If that was something the boy prided himself on, it wasn't a very good talent in her opinion.
He had that sort of childish, inexperienced kind of aura (though Everly couldn't say much herself) that she disliked right away. Her parents would chide her at this moment, but she didn't really care. She could tell that the smile on his face was fake, and if it wasn't, then how could you explain that abnormally large smile? No one smiled like that.
Unless that smile was frozen on their face. In that case, Everly felt sympathy for them. Their mouth muscles would hurt quite a lot.
"So, what brings you to interrupt me and make assumptions about what I'm doing?" Everly asked lightly, with a hint of irritation behind her words.
Everly really should be taking lessons from Elena. The third-year would be proud if she saw this.───── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ─────
