2021, Stage 2 Group E: Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff

Round 2

"Wha' un opunin' roond folks. Neether team hus tha' advuntage yet, ut's stull unnyone's geem!" He announced, waiting for the next set of spells to go flying.

And fly they did. A jet of hot green flame immediately came shooting forth from Callie's wand as if a Dragon was trying to break free from within. Miss Romero would make a solid effort to avoid the torrent of flame, managing to cop only a few patches of flame rather than an all out scorching.

As she dealt with that, her teammate had only one target in mind. Namely one Thomas Baines. Her focus served to her benefit and her wand seemed to thrum with power as she pointed and cast her next spell. The Blindfold came out at blistering speed and although Thomas was focusing his efforts on moving quickly and keeping low, the bubbles made it impossible for him to see the attack coming as a blindfold clamped itself tightly over his eyes.

Hoping to take advantage of this, Martyna, still very much aflame decided to get her own gout of fire started. Aiming towards her now blinded target she shot forth a stream of orange flame, hoping to burn him harshly. Her shot was not badly aimed, however it seemed as if Thomas had received some divine inspiration from the hit Muggle Documentary film 'The Matrix' as he almost supernaturally dodged the fiery jet and saved himself a nasty burning.

It was always Obscuro. No matter how hard he tried to avoid them, it seemed that in every single duel he was fated to end up with cloth over his eyes. Instinctively reaching his free hand up to his face, Thomas patted the blindfold as if to confirm that he wasn't hallucinating and that he was, in fact, unable to see. Again. ”UUUUUUUUUGH! I HATE IT HERE,“ he complained loudly. If Thomas was going to be blindfolded, he was sure to make it everyone's problem, out of spite alone.

In his positively petulant fussing, Thomas accidentally managed to stumble out of the way of a spell he didn't even see coming. Go figure. This marked the second spell that he was able to dodge without directly perceiving anything of note. Perhaps, in being destined to be blindfolded in every duel, Thomas was also destined to develop the ability to see with his eyes closed. More likely, however, he was pretty darn lucky.

”Callie, are you alright!? Status report,“ Thomas called out vaguely to where his dueling partner had once been standing, though his sense of direction was rather muddied.

Things were heating up in more ways than one..who knew there would be so much fire! The whole idea of trying to set Thomas of all people aflame didn't click with Callie who firmly believed the boy would make a terrible barbeque. He was much too small, angry and spiteful to provide good sustenance for an aspiring cannibal. Thomas' rather loud complaints didn't come as much of a surprise to Callie, especially when he got hit with yet another Obscuro. "Still kicking! Status report? Really? Thomas, we're not in a space movie." She confirmed with a bright smile, entirely forgetting Thomas was unable to see it. Even if he was trying to talk to a wall instead of her at least he was still trying. "I know you're blind and all but at least you're not barbeque yet!" Callie knew the attempt at cheering the boy up would likely fall flat but that wasn't going to stop her from trying. "Oh right, sorry about the flames thing Martyna!" She called out almost as an afterthought as though she'd entirely forgotten about turning the poor Hufflepuff into a candle.

"Wargh!"

Tina swerved just as Callie fired a jet of flames - which were far more powerful than what she was capable of producing - in her direction, grazing her robes and setting them alight. She desperately tried to pad them out, forgetting for a moment that they were in fact magical and not going to leave her with permanent scarring. When Willow bravely overcame the fury of her bogies curse, however, and impaired Thomas with a perfectly aimed and shot blindfold, her confidence surged.

"Wo-ho-ho! Take that bogie-curser!" Tina briefly considered high-fiving her partner in crime, but decided against it when she caught glimpse of the snot dripping from her. Yep. Still gross. She shot back with a valiant Incendio, excited to watch the boy get hit full on, but somehow he managed to dodge out the way, even with her lovely bubble set up! Her jaw dropped, incredulous. His loud wails made the realisation that she'd missed even more devastating.

"Oh right, sorry about the flames thing Martyna!"

"You will be!" she fired back at Callie, more playful than mean-spirited.

She knew it was only going to get worse from here. Already she was constantly wiping the snot from her face onto her robes and knew it would need a good scourgify later... if it was bad enough just a straight out incendio. Her head felt wobbly and that urge to curl up and take a nap was strong. This wasn't a time to give up, and she knew Martyna and Hufflepuff were counting on her. Especially since this was her first match as one of the captains.

As strong as she could manage her wand whipped out towards Thomas. "Obscuro!" Despite it all she felt the spell easily fly out of her wand to tightly wrap a blindfold around the boys eyes who promptly complained about it. To her side she heard Martyna shouting encouragement for her. Willow gave her a sickly nod of appreciation. She didn't want to talk other than spells, the nausea making her feel like she could throw up at any point.

Round 3

Now things were really heating up. Thomas was blind as a bat, Willow was suffering from the world's most debilitating case of the sniffles whilst Callie and Martyna continued looking absolutely fabulous. Despite the latter smelling a tad more burnt than before.

AJ's commentary wasn't necessary. The intensity in the atmosphere spoke volumes by itself. Thomas made a valiant attempt to take off his blindfold, and although he managed to loosen it a tad, it refused to come off.

His partner meanwhile made her own valiant attempt to strike against the Blazing Badgers but unfortunately was unable to strike true with her knockback Jinx.

The Ladies they faced however did not have such problems, they were going to take advantage of Thomas' temporary blindness in the fullest of manners. In sync the pair would cast their spells, Willow managing to strike the poor Raven despite her blurry vision, due to the fact that he couldn't see a thing.

It was Martyna with the star cast this round. A well executed Incendio that could not have hit more directly. Too bad the blindfold was fireproof or Thomas might've benefited slightly from his mild case of incineration.

Things weren't looking all too good for the Birds, but perhaps their talons could grasp victory from this. After all, Callie was doing perfectly fine.

Willow was not one to back down easy. Even through the haze of a sickness that she would rather not experience ever again, she would fight until the end. For herself, for her house, for her brother that she knew was in the stands cheering her on. Even if she hadn't seen him, she knew he was there. He always was.

Badgers were loyal to a fault, but there was no fault line in this duel. Thomas struggled with his blindfold, Callie's spell missed. With a synchronized strike towards Thomas, their spells went off without a hitch. "Flipendo!" With a knockback and a bright flame, he didn't stand a chance against the Blazing Badgers. There were still many rounds to come, and Willow was ready.

Willow's spell was familiar. Over the summer, Thomas felt the sting of a well-placed Flipendo on more than on occasion from the likes of a certain Slytherin in his year who was out for his head. Dizziness from the pain and the exertion began to cloud his mind, but he still struggled against the results of her previous spell with a vengeance. If anything, the urgency of his motions increased, tearing at the cloth in an attempt to do anything to remove it. ”Come on, come on. This is so—“

Of course, there was a second one. There were two duelists on the Hufflepuff side of things after all, and with his eyes obscured he was the perfect target. Thomas resented such an implication, that he was weak and unable to do anything to prevent his condition. As the Incendio perfectly struck his chest, the Ravenclaw staggered back and struggled to breathe with the force of the spell knocking the wind out of him. The smoke billowing from his burning robes did little to aid in this venture.

Still standing, but only by virtue of willpower alone it seemed, Thomas briefly stopped clawing at the blindfold if only for a moment. He was visibly woozy, almost down for the count, but at least he was conscious. "Ugh," he began, and a stranger to Thomas might've thought that it was a preface to some obscenity. He paused for a moment, as if considering it, before resolving to say, "Bring it on, you Hufflepuff twerps." The second year would not be wasting his first utterance of a swear word on this duel, no sir. Truly an exercise in self-restraint.

Though his eyes were obscured, preventing any attempts he may have at glaring, the grin on Thomas's face was unmistakable and positively irritating. Perhaps it would have been menacing had he not been met with failure and futility nearly every round so far, but now it just possessed a quality of unhinged, acceptance of defeat. A taunt, a desire to continue to draw fire (literally, considering the events of the previous round), as that was the only thing he was any good for in this match it seemed.

As though spurred on by her previous miss, Tina aligned her wand near perfectly at her opponent. "Incendio!" she cried, almost blown back by the flame that cracked out from the end of her wand and hit Thomas squarely in the chest. It almost felt unfair, with him being blindfolded being such a disadvantage, but he had managed to dodge last round.

Also, he called them twerps, so he deserved it.

She also managed to lunge out of the way of Callie's oncoming spell, just as Willow landed a Flipendo on poor Thomas, who was honestly just being bullied at this point. The badger hissed as the remaining flames from before singed her robes and died. It was truly a thing of pride, she though, to have been able to set someone else on fire too.

"Whahaha! Told you you'd be sorry n' stuff!" she shrieked. It was kind of like being an evil witch from a movie.

Why couldn't she hit anything! It was growing more fustrating with each and every round that passed by. Seeing Thomas in such an unfortunate state was also quite disheartening when combined with her apparent inability to hit anything. Martyna's cackling didn't exactly do wonders to help her morale although she did her utmost not to let it show. Instead Callie shifted back and forth on her feet for a moment as she thought things through. It was getting quite desperate, anyone could see that. Instead of saying anything Callie looked down to her wand and gave it a glare, as if to ask it to start cooperating with her.
