Haley opened the letter she had received from her parents and wondered what they would write to her. It was unusual for Haley to receive a letter from her parents, since they had only recently been in contact and she would go home tomorrow anyway with the Hogwarts Express but she didn't give it much thought. She sat in the common room on the sofa in front of the fireplace and took the letter out of the envelope. She began to read the letter and her eyebrows drew together. She read the letter two more times, but she couldn't figure it out.
"Hello dear,

Please be prepared that we will not stay in London, after your arrival we will travel directly to Emilia. Unfortunately, we will not visit your grandmother as agreed, but you will still be able to see her.

Love,
Mum and Dad"
Haley's stomach tightened the more she read the letter. She didn't know what was going on, but she knew it couldn't be good if the plans were changed so spontaneous. She put the letter back in its envelope and ran up the stairs to her dorm room. There she met her two friends and while she started to pack up the most important things she explained everything to them. But there was not much Haley could say, because she had not received much information herself.

After Haley had dinner with her friends she got ready and went to sleep so that she would not be too tired the next morning. She got up early while everybody was still sleeping. She got ready quietly since everyone was still asleep and she did not wanted to wake anybody. But soon everybody was awake and soon they'd made their way to the Hogwarts Express. Before she left she wrote one last letter to let them know that she was not staying in London and did not know when she would be back.

She sat down at a table in the common room and quickly began to write the letter and brought it to the Owlery. Only a few minutes later she find herself in the train. After her arrival she greeted her parents with a big hug. Before she could ask what was going on they hurried off train station and assured her that they would explain everything in a moment, but that they had to hurry now. As soon as they left and arrived at home they fastened on their arms and apperated away.

Haley was only apperated with her mother once and before she could take in the surroundings she kept her eyes closed for a moment and breathed calmly. Her stomach was churning and she felt like she was about to throw up. After a few seconds she opened her eyes and found herself in the entrance area of a hospital. But this was not St. Mungo's. "Where are we?" Haley asked her parents in confusion and when her eyes fell on a board with all the rooms she could see that this was also a hospital for wizards and witches.

Haley parents ran off and Haley followed them while her mother started explaining the whole situation to her. "It's about Ian." At those words, Haley stopped short and her stomach tightened again, fearing she was going to vomit. Not Ian. No. Not the cousin who was like a brother to her. Not the cousin she had almost lost as a small child. Her parents didn't stop, and Haley put in a short sprint to catch up with them again. "W-what h-happened?" stuttered Haley, afraid of the answer. "We don't know what exactly happened but he got into an fight with another student..." Haley's mother stopped speaking, "WHAT happened to Ian?" asked Haley now so loudly that several heads turned to look at them. Haley's voice was shaking and tears were gathering in her eyes at all the horrible thoughts she was having.

"The fight between the two of them went out of hand and ..." Haley's mother stopped again, she knew the bond Ian and Haley had with each other and feared what the next words would trigger in Haley but before Haley could ask again her mother continued "Ian is in a coma." At those words, the world stopped spinning and Haley stood rooted to the spot. Had she just heard right? Tears began to run down her cheeks, the world around her disappeared and a darkness spread over her. Her father barely approached her and shook her by the shoulder, talking at her, but Haley couldn't hear him.

Haley's father spoke and spoke, until at some point he spoke louder and louder to her, but she did not respond, it was as if she was no longer present in her own body, and while more and more people looked at the two of them, Haley's father picked her up and carried her further. Arriving in a quiet corner he set his daughter down again and shook both of her shoulders. It took a few more seconds for Haley to regain consciousness. The tears ran down her face harder and harder and suddenly she looked into her father's face and whispered very softly. "Not Ian." Her father took her in his arms and at that moment she began to sob and her legs lost their strength. Haley slumped down and sobbed louder and louder.

Her father held her in his arms the whole time and tried to calm her down. There was so much going through Haley's head at that moment that she couldn't get a clear thought. After a few minutes she stopped sobbing but the tears were still running down her cheeks. But it seemed that with a click she was back to her full senses. She jumped up and her father looked at her, startled. With big, red eyes she looked at him. "I have to see him!" were her only words and she was already on her way. But she didn't know which way to go. Her father had quickly caught up with her and she followed him.

They ran down the hallway a few more meters, then to the right, right again, and left until they came to a large closed door in the distance, the windows of which did not allow anyone to see through, and Haley could see her aunt and uncle. Her three other cousins and her grandmother. Haley increased her speed and her youngest cousin caught sight of her and ran toward her. The other two quickly followed suit and after a few meters the four met and fell into a big hug. Haley began to sob again and the oldest, Fred, took her face in both hands and looked at her sadly. He took her again in a tight hug and whispered softly in her ear, "He'll be okay!"

They walked to her family now and Haley greeted the rest and took her grandmother into a tight hug as well. She turned to her Aunt Emilia. "May I see him please?" asked Haley softly, looking at her with her teary eyes. Emilia looked down at her sadly, her eyes red as well, and took Haley into a hug. "We're still waiting for the doctors, but you'll be one of the first to see him." Emilia knew that Ian and Haley were like siblings and would do anything to make sure she got to see him.

Haley walked back in to her cousins when she suddenly overheard an argument between her youngest cousins Justin and Taylor. "We have to tell her why this happened!" said Justin angrily as Taylor retorted, "No! You know exactly how sensitive she is. She'll only blame herself!" Haley looked at the two confused, not knowing what they were talking about. "Blame herself for what?" she now asked in wonder as the two looked startled at Haley and grumbled something she couldn't understand. Fred joined her now and pulled her next to him and the four of them sat down in a circle on the floor. "I think Justin is right." He spoke now and before Taylor could protest Fred raised his hand and Taylor closed his mouth again. Fred was the oldest in this circle and Taylor knew he had no chance. He crossed his arms and looked annoyed at his brother. "If you think so." And for the next few minutes, he didn't say another word.

"Listen Haley." Fred now began to speak, looking at her somewhat pityingly, "This fight between Ian and that student is" he paused for a moment and looked at the floor, "How should I say..it broke out because of you." He now looked back at Haley as she stared open mouthed. "B-but." She shook her head, "Why because of me?" she asked a little too loudly now and everyone turned to her startled and told her to be quiet. "Our parents don't know why yet. They had asked us but we claimed we didn't know." Said Justin now, turning his gaze back to Fred.

"We sat outside in the afternoon and talked about you being a Parsel." He said the last part especially quietly, knowing that until now only your grandmother knew about it. But Haley still didn't really understand how that could lead to Ian now being in a coma. "Well, Tom, this is the guy Ian had been fighting with, kind of overheard this conversation and then started saying some nasty things about you." Haley still didn't really understand but before she could ask her cousin continued. "Well, he was talking about blood traitors and whether we wouldn't be ashamed to be related to someone like you." He looked at Haley a little sadly and even if she didn't show it he knew those words would hurt her. "Then he said some more unpleasant things and that it was a shame that you were a Parsel. This went on for quite a while and Ian and he just yelled at each other until at some point Tom said." Now Fred stopped again and looked at the floor. This time Taylor spoke, "Enough already. She doesn't need to know that." he looked annoyed at his brother. "I do need to know." Haley now spoke angry. All three of them now looked at her and briefly exchanged glances with each other. "He said that you had to be killed so that you couldn't put any more impure blood into this world. And well, Ian snapped at that," Came the quick reply from Justin now and he then received a punch from Taylor paired with an evil glare. Justin rubbed his arm and looked down at the floor in embarrassment.

Haley now looked there on the floor and couldn't believe it. Not only the fact that she was a Parsel, no also the fact that she was not a pureblood put her family in such danger. Haley could not believe any of this. Ian was now in a coma just for defending her. Tears began to roll down her cheek again and her heart ached more than it had in a long time. But before she could lose herself in the pain, the door opened and everyone's heads turned to a young doctor looking at the group of people, "Rose family?"

Haley was up in a millisecond when she heard the doctor address her family. Her cousins also followed her lead and soon the four of them were standing with her family waiting for news. The doctor stood with her Aunt Emilia and Uncle Henry several feet away, so Haley couldn't understand what he was saying. Henry rubbed his hand comfortingly over Emilia's back and nodded now and then to the doctor. Haley couldn't tell if he was giving them good news or bad, and nervousness rose in her. She started pacing back and forth, blinding everything around her. As she did so, the rest of her family looked worriedly at her but left her alone. Haley was so absorbed in her own world that she didn't even notice that the conversation between her aunt and uncle and the doctor had ended until she felt a hand on her shoulder, slowly stopping her and turning her to face him.

Haley now looked up from the floor and looked directly into her aunt's red, puffy eyes. But she smiled slightly and spoke softly "He'll be okay." Before Emilia could speak further, Haley burst into tears again. On the one hand out of joy and relief but on the other hand because now she couldn't suppress the pain anymore. Emilia took her tightly in her arms and gently stroked her head. "I-is he awake?" gulped Haley, wiping tears from her face. "No, not yet. The doctor assured us that all the damage could be healed but now we have to wait for him to wake up on his own. He suspects that will happen in the next few days, though." Haley let the air through her nose in relief and the two of them went back to the rest of the family, where Haley now had Henry's arm around her shoulder and he gently stroked her.

The adults talked for a while about how they would get everyone settled into Emilia and Henry's home and decided that Haley's parents would go shopping for the next few days and Cecilia, Haley's grandmother would go home with her cousins to prepare the sleeping quarters. Haley got to stay at the hospital with Emilia and Henry and join Ian in his room. Haley said goodbye to all and gave everyone a tight hug until she turned impatiently to the big door, waiting for them to be allowed to go to the room now.

A few minutes later, Haley stood in Ian's room. She was alone, except for Ian, who was lying quietly in his bed as if he were asleep. His parents were with the doctor, discussing some more important matters. Haley stood by the door for a while before slowly walking to Ian's bedside. Tears started to run down her cheek again when she saw him lying there. She sat down on the chair next to his bed and looked at him for a moment. He still had a few visible blemishes, but they were all almost completely healed - it was always amazing what could be done with magic - and except for those blemishes, it looked like he was just sleeping and would wake up at any moment, she would just have to say his name.

Haley knew Ian would be fine, but the shock was still too deep. She leaned forward and rested her elbows on the bed. She now took his hand in hers and stroked the back of his hand with her thumb and whispered softly, "Oh Ian, I'm so sorry about everything."

The next hour flew by and suddenly the door opened and Emilia and Henry looked at her smiling. "We should go home and come back in the morning." Haley startled at the words and looked at them both. "No way! There has to be someone here in case he wakes up." Of course Haley wanted to be that someone, but if not her, then someone else had to stay here. Haley continued to argue with her aunt and uncle for at least another half hour, making no effort to move an inch from her chair. They had reached the point where her aunt just sighed loudly and left the room. Her uncle was still trying to discuss with Haley, but her point was clear. She would not leave this place voluntarily. After another 5 minutes Emilia came back and was visibly annoyed but told Haley that she had talked to the doctor and that she could stay the night. She had also already spoken to her mother, who had wanted to go to pick Haley up in person, but her father had intervened and convinced her to let Haley do it. And so Haley had gotten her way and she knew full well that this was the biggest exception ever and her family was only allowing this because they knew how much Haley would suffer if she wasn't here.

Haley was awake most of the night but Ian did not wake up. She spent her time reading, listening to music and thinking. She wasn't even tired, and as if only two hours had passed, the sun was already winking through the windows again. Startled, she looked at the clock on the wall and realized that it was already half past seven. It was only a few minutes later as her and Ian's parents walked through the door. Haley's mother took her in a quick hug. "It's time for you to get some rest and freshen up." Haley said nothing, but just nodded silently. Even though she would have loved to stay here, she knew that the tiredness would soon catch up with her and the most important thing was that Ian wouldn't be alone when he woke up and now that his parents were here, that wouldn't happen either.

Haley drove with her parents to her cousins' home and they were already waiting for her at the breakfast table. They greeted her quickly and looked at Haley impatiently. Her grandmother had probably forced them to wait for Haley and so she didn't want to keep the boys in suspense and quickly took a seat at the big round table. There was a huge bowl of fruit salad, yogurt, fresh buns and everything else Haley's heart could desire. She took a bowl of the fruit salad and slowly her eyes started to fall shut. "Come on, I think we better get you to bed." her grandmother said and Haley was too tired to answer her. She got up, went into Ian's room, changed into her sleeping clothes and flopped down on his bed. It took only two seconds and Haley was asleep.

It felt like she had slept away an entire century as she slowly woke up. She heard the voices from the living room but before she would join them she went straight to the bathroom, took a warm long shower, brushed her teeth and put on something comfortable. Once in the living room she talked to her cousins and told them that Ian hadn't woken up during the night and they all looked at each other a bit glumly but they all knew he was fine and that was the most important thing. As the boys began to scuffle with each other once again, Haley left to sit with her grandmother.

She didn't have to say anything and still Cecilia knew what was going on in her head. "My dear, it's not your fault." She spoke, looking sadly at Haley. "Yes, it is." she answered stubbornly and annoyed. Her grandmother now took her hands in hers and looked into her eyes. "It's not and you know it. Sooner or later you'll realize it too. Please don't repress who you are because of that." She gave her a slight smile but it didn't convince Haley. Her grandmother was the only one who knew what had happened. Her cousins had told her last night, knowing that Cecilia was the only adult in the family who knew about Haley's talent. But could you even call it talent when it brought so much suffering to others? When it caused hatred?

Before Haley could contradict her, the door opened and her uncle and aunt walked in. "Is he awake?" the words came shooting out of Haley's mouth, the front door not yet closed. "No..b-" but before they could speak further Haley interrupted them, "Who's with Ian?" She stood up, hoping she would hear something different than she expected. "No one right now, but d-" Haley interrupted her again and her head turned red with anger, "NO ONE? There has to be someone with him!" Haley didn't listen to the voices pounding on her and grabbed her jacket and put on her shoes. She didn't know how to get to the hospital yet but she didn't have to, because when she looked up, her grandmother was already standing next to her, holding the car keys.

Haley left the house without a word and ran to the car while Cecilia said goodbye to the family. They drove to the hospital together, not speaking a word to each other. Haley was grateful that her grandmother knew her so well and knew exactly that Haley needed this rest now. Thirty minutes later, they both found themselves back in Ian's room, who still hadn't woken up. The doctors continued to reassure them that all was well and he just needed some more time. Haley and her grandmother continued to sit in silence while Cecilia knitted socks and Haley continued to read her book, holding Ian's hand on the side. She hoped he could feel that she was there.

After a few hours, the sun slowly began to set again, Cecilia made her way to the cafeteria to get a cup of coffee. Haley put her book aside and propped her elbows on Ian's bed. She took his hand in both of hers and spoke softly to him. She told him how idiotic it was to put himself in such danger over this, but also how grateful she was for him. She asked him to wake up soon and even though Haley didn't know if he would really hear her, she believed it. She leaned back again but didn't let go of his hand. A few minutes passed and suddenly she felt his finger twitch. Could that be or was she imagining it?

Her concentration was now completely on Ian. She moved her chair closer to his bed, "Ian, can you hear me?" but there was no further response. She must have imagined it after all. The joy disappeared as suddenly as it had come, and she sadly slumped her shoulders as a soft "Hales?" came from Ian's direction.

Haley's eyes grew as big as possible when she looked at Ian. Had he really just said her name? And yes, she hadn't imagined it. He blinked and his fingers squeezed hers ever so lightly. "Oh Ian, I'm here!" She leaned forward and stroked his cheek briefly as she realised she should get one of the healers. "I'll be right back!" She jumped up and ran out of the room. As she stood in the corridor she looked to her left - no one to be seen. Her head turned to the right and at the end of the corridor she could make out the doctor she already knew. He had already seen her and was walking towards her when she approached him and called out "He's awake!"

For the next half hour Haley had to wait outside the room with her grandmother while the doctor was alone in the room with Ian. Cecilia had already informed his parents and the whole family was on their way back to the hospital. Haley started pacing up and down the hallway. Five minutes felt like an eternity and after another 10 minutes the rest of the family arrived at the hospital. Haley told them that Ian was awake but that was all she could say. While they all waited they barely spoke to each other and they all jumped up out of their seats when the doctor came out of Ian's room.

"Ah, I see you've already been informed." At this sentence, the corner of his mouth flitted up a little and he smiled. Before he could have spoken further he was already bombarded with questions by Emilia. "How is he? When can he go home and could he remember what had happened?" The doctor listened to all the questions and answered them calmly while everyone looked to him with eager faces.

"Surprisingly, he is doing very well. If it stays that way, he can go home tomorrow. Remember...he can't remember what happend at the moment." Haley noticed his pause at the last part and his quick glance at her. And in that moment she knew Ian could remember perfectly well but was protecting Haley. She couldn't believe it and a big smile formed on her lips as she was brought out of her thoughts by Fred, "Can we go in now?" he inquired impatiently and again they all looked at the doctor eagerly. He began to laugh shortly, "Yes you may." He took a step to the side and signalled a clear path for everyone.

Haley walked through the door first and was surprised to see Ian sitting upright in his bed by now, looking in her direction. As soon as their eyes met a big smile formed on their faces. Haley quickly hopped to his bedside and took Ian into a tight hug. "You're crazy. Don't ever do that again!" she said so softly that only Ian could hear. He returned her hug and whispered in her ear, "I'd do it again anytime." And that was the end of their secret conversation for now, as all the boys were now running up to Ian and claiming him all for themselves.

The next few hours flew by and the family enjoyed their time together as if nothing had ever happened. They laughed and told stories until it was evening. Ian had to stay another night but they were allowed to pick him up the next day. Reluctantly, Haley went home with her family and they all said goodbye to Ian. That evening they sat at the table together, without Ian, and you could feel it in the air how relieved everyone was. After dinner, Haley went to Fred's room with Fred, Justin and Taylor. Justin helped her get the mattress from Ian's room and so they would all sleep together in Fred's room. With the mattresses and four people in the room it was cramped but no one minded. They made themselves comfortable on the cushions and talked about all sorts of things. Haley talked a lot about Hogwarts while her cousins talked about their school.
They talked for ages into the night and at one point Haley's cousins tried to persuade her to speak in Parseltongue but she resisted and didn't let up. "No way. You see what all this has led to. I want nothing more to do with it and that's it." She scowled at all three of them and the boys exchanged brief glances but no one said anything more. Shortly afterwards they all fell asleep except Haley who was still awake. She listened to the deep and quiet sounds of breathing and a few minutes later her eyes fell shut.

Haley saw Ian lying in his hospital bed. But something was different. He was very pale and something felt strange. She felt a pain in her chest in the place where her heart was. She didn't know what it was but she knew it wasn't good. Suddenly she heard a sob behind her and when she turned around she saw Emilia crying in Henry's arms. She could no longer stand on her feet and collapsed. Her aunt and uncle were now sitting on the floor crying into each other's arms. Haley didn't understand what was going on but tears were streaming down her face. She turned back to Ian and suddenly saw two healers pushing him away. She ran to his bedside and yelled at them. "Leave him alone!" and as she touched Ian's arm she felt a coldness that made her realise all at once what had happened. Ian was dead and with this realisation she began to cry. She cried and cried and held onto his body. "Don't take him away from me!" she cried loudly, unable to see through her tears. Suddenly her mother stood beside her and pulled her away from Ian. "He's gone." She spoke and Haley let out a loud scream.

Drenched in sweat, Haley woke up. Just a dream. Just a dream. Just a dream. She repeated this sentence a few more times until her heartbeat finally calmed down. She wiped away her tears with her sleeve and lay awake the rest of the night. She couldn't know it yet, but this dream would stay with her for a lot of more nights.

As much as Haley tried to go back to sleep, her attempts were unsuccessful. After what felt like an eternity, she decided to get up. It was still early and it would surely be another two hours before the any person in the house woke up, but she couldn't keep lying around pointlessly. She got up quietly and tried to crawl over her cousins without waking them, which turned out to be harder than she thought. Just as she took a big step over Justin she stepped on his hand on the other side. "oops, sorry!" she whispered softly but all that came from Justin was a grumpy noise as he lay on his side.

She quietly opened the door, slipped into Ian's room and grabbed some new clothes before going into the bathroom. She took a long, warm shower and got ready in peace. After leaving the bathroom, she went downstairs to the large living room and a glance out the window revealed that the sun would soon be rising. She closed the door behind her and sat down at the piano in the corner of the room. Her fingers gently glided over the keys and she quietly played a few songs.

By now it had become a lot brighter and Haley could hear the first people waking up upstairs. She got up and made her way to the kitchen. She started to set the table for breakfast and after a short time the room was filled with people and everyone took on a different task. They all sat together at the breakfast table and criss-crossed everyone carrying on different conversations.

It wasn't long before they were on their way to the hospital again to pick up Ian. While Ian's parents were still talking to the doctors, Haley already went into his room and there he was sitting on the edge of his bed."Good morning, Hales. I'm all packed and just need to drink my last dose." As he mentioned his medicine he held up a small ampoule. "Well hurry up then, so we can finally go home." She stepped towards him and he rolled his eyes, "If you only knew how disgusting this stuff tastes." But without elaborating he put the it to his lips, threw his head back and swallowed it all in one gulp. He screwed up his face and stuck out his tongue, "baah, I'm really glad that was the last one." Haley shook her head and sat down next to him, "You know, if you didn't do such nonsense, you wouldn't have to drink something so disgusting." She looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "The boys have already told you what happened though? Hales I couldn't help it. No one talks about my family like that and certainly not about you." Before they could have spoken further the door opened and Emilia came in. "You ready?". Ian and Haley both jumped up and headed out.

Haley tried to persuade her parents that they could stay a few more days but all her efforts were in vain. She spent the remaining hours with her cousins and time flew by far too quickly as Haley's father called out to her. "Time to say goodbye." She spoke as she slumped her shoulders and looked sad. She loved spending time with her cousins. Living so far apart, they rarely saw each other but the next holidays would come.

The family hugged each other and after everyone had hugged everyone, Haley looked to Ian. He was standing leaning in the doorway with his arms crossed. He opened his arms and came up to Haley and took her in a tight hug. "I'm going to miss you." She squeezed once tightly and released from the hug. Before she left, she leaned forward once more and whispered in his ear, "Thank you for keeping my secret." Not only did she have a Secret Keeper at Hogwarts, but she also had one in her family.

They said their final goodbyes and made their way back to London.
