2021 Stage 2 Group F: Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw

Every journey begins with a single step, every legend, a choice, and every warrior, a battle...

Standing upon the cold wooden floorboards of the dueling platform, the boy was poised, ready to confront the seemingly impossible challenge before him. In this, he awaited his opponents, his mind a resting monument of control and temperance. Delilah Stewart was someone who he had previously dreaded to face, if not by her age alone, then by the Fourth Year spell arsenal she commanded. It didn’t help that both he and his partner were first years. But to lose oneself to their baser emotions was to admit defeat before the clash had even begun. For Valentine, losing was never an option, and so he stood, in full control of himself, awaiting the moment when his foes arrived.

In one hand he clutched his mayhaw wood wand. This unassuming object would be the tool that paved the way for his story to unfold. Many fabled legends wielded magnificent weapons, and this precious core of wood was no different in his eyes.

Everly, for once, was downright terrified, but hadn't broken down yet.

The young lion stood, one arm clutching the wand, rubbing her thumb over the curves at the bottom of the stick, the other hanging uncertainly by her side, facing the other team as she studied them. The boy, probably another first year, and the older Ravenclaw girl. Her mind was racing, and she let out a rushed breath as she took her stance next to her partner. She didn't recognize him personally, but she could briefly recall him somewhere in her memory. The kid who introduced himself as Valentine, wasn't it? "Good luck," she said, with a nod in his direction, then at the other team's, and lifted her wand.

Robert walked into the dueling area, stifling a yawn. He'd been up much too late the night before going over rules and strategies, unable to sleep with excitement for the next day. Absentmindedly fidgeting with the bronze eagle he had proudly pinned to his chest, he looked out at his opponents as their names were called. They were both first-years, a fact Robert couldn't help but smile at, remembering how one-sided his past duel had been. This one would definitely be a bit more balanced.

As his own name was called, the young Ravenclaw felt his fatigue fade as adrenaline took over. It is worth noting that there was no nervousness or fear in the boy, despite his rather quick demise in his first duel. Robert still considered that duel a victory for himself, as even though he'd only gotten off one spell, that spell had succeeded. However, this duel would hopefully bring his first technical dueling victory. Stepping up to the piste, he gave his opponents a bright grin. "Good luck, guys!" Settling into a dueling stance, he looked over at his partner and gave a more serious nod, his cheerfulness still sparkling in his eyes. "Let's do this."

Upon her name being said, she took her place next to her teammate. Her second official match, and it seemed to have a higher chance of them winning than the last one. She was looking forward to this. "Good luck to you both." She said with an innocent smile, it was a bit peculiar being 3 years older than everybody else in the duel, she hoped they didn't take anything personally, after all, they didn't pick the teams they were in.

With a quick glance over to Robert, she got into her stance, ready to start off the duel.

“You may begin!” was called out, and spells took no time flying across the field from Ravenclaw. It would appear that both Robert and Delilah had focused on Everly. It would also appear that she had anticipated that as she hadn’t bothered to try casting at all.

As Robert’s blue flipendo sailed at her, she nimbly dodged out of its way, almost repelling naturally away from it as if they were the same polarity of a magnet. Delilah would seem to have a bit more luck as her incendio duo just barely hit Everly, lighting the arm of her robes aflame. Perhaps it had been the smoke that had started to come out of her Teammate’s wand that had distracted her from getting out of the way of Delilah.

Smoke started to cloud the field from Jackson’s fumos. Santario used her robe's sleeve to cover her mouth and nose as she took a step back to avoid the smoke from stinging her eyes. Not something any of the four on the field would be able to escape. Thankfully it didn’t seem like an overly powerful fumos and would probably be cleared by the end of the next round.

Two came towards the Gryffindor pair, one girl and one boy, each daunting, deadly, but not insurmountable. For every challenge, there was a solution, no matter how minute or improbable. Without further delay, he imbued himself with the power that lay within him, spewing forth a thickening cloud of fumes from the tip of his wand.

Black tendrils of smoke swirled around his body, enveloping him in a deep fog that threatened to roll over the rest of the platform. With a half-grin that was almost feral in its ferocity, Valentine stepped backward, disappearing into the smoke. The last thing either of his opponents would see was the glare of his piercing grey eyes as the spell engulfed him. And then, they too would be consumed by the terrain he commanded.

The strategy came back to mind and Everly didn't even lift her wand that round as two spells came towards her. The blue light shot towards her and she dodged out of the way of the nasty Flipendo, but that put her in line directly for the fourth-year's Incendio. Just as smoke began to billow out of her teammate's wand, Everly was batting at the fire singeing on her cloak's sleeve.

Fire and smoke. How ironic.

"Flipendo!" Robert cried, pointing his wand at Everly. He felt a bit more resistance in the casting of the spell than normal, but it still went off without a hitch, barreling towards his target. However, the Gryffindor somehow dodged the blue streak, almost as if she already knew it was coming. Robert couldn't help but be impressed, knowing full well from experience how important and difficult it can be to evade incoming spells. However, her graceful dodging skills seemed to come at a price, as she didn't even attempt to cast a spell, apparently too focused on being an elusive target to fight back.

The Ravenclaw was happy to see that his partner's aim was a bit more on point than his own, as she caught Everly on the arm with an Incendio Duo. It didn't look quite as solid a hit as it could have been, but it was definitely better than nothing. "Nice one!" he called out with a grin. However, he quickly lost sight of the other team and his own teammate as the dueling area starting to fill with smoke. At first, he thought it was coming from Delilah's fiery spell, but soon realized it was actually coming out of their other opponent's wand, and he recognized it as a Smokescreen spell. He had never really understood why someone would want to use it, as it affected everyone in the duel equally. Mentally pushing his questions aside, the Eagle focused on his next move.
