Walking into Everything
@River Dewlight
My goodness, this is pretty much pure stupidity. This is what happens when you're trying to work with writer's block.
It was such a relief to see again. Essentially, that was most of what had been going through Sapphire's head since getting her glasses. After years of suffering near-sightedness, she was infinitely glad that she had her vision once more. It was annoying, having to strain her eyes every time she thought something was worth looking at. Apparently, though, she still had no situational awareness because she was still doing stupid things such as walking into walls. She'd probably end up breaking her lenses pretty early on. It would be a tragedy, but it was also probably unavoidable.
It was an overcast day, With not much light streaming through the windows if any. It was peaceful, although perhaps the torches clashing with the outdoor lighting could create an ominous effect at times. It was the end of the day and she didn't know where to go, so she was essentially just wandering the halls until some purpose hit her or she thought of someplace to go. Other than that, it was mindless.
The castle carried a chill in the winter, she'd learned, and she had a bad habit of being unable to predict the temperatures. So she was either woefully unprepared for the cold or sweltering hot. She was good with intellectual things, not common sense. She sighed, rubbing her arms. The real problem was her fingers, but it wasn't as if she was going to go through the trouble of putting them in her pockets. That would just be too easy. She never took the easy way out if she could help it, harsh as it may be.
She would probably need to warm her fingers up properly soon. She didn't know how long she'd been wandering for. Usually, it was a while. She had a lot of time on her hands, as the Scavenger Hunt Club meetings were few and far between and she didn't really have any other activities. She could go to the library, but she had been trying not to strain her eyes again. It was true that she now had glasses, but she'd been consumed by other things. None of which were apparent now, as she did nothing but walk. Her productivity had all but disappeared over winter break. What was it about spending time away from the routine that threw people all out of wack? It always seemed to happen to her.
Among her many terrible decisions, closing her eyes while walking was definitely one of them. Unless you had the entire castle memorized, it was safer to keep your eyes open. She had falsely measured how far away the corner was. She turned, just barely before she should have, and caught her toe on the corner wall. Her eyes shot back open and her hand caught, just barely, on the corner. Unlike her foot, this catch was intentional and kept her from falling, albeit leaving her palm red and angry and her fingertips stinging.
To what she assumed to be no one she narrated, "And that, folks, is what not to do. Learn to be less like Sapph."

Looks great to me! We’ll work through writers-block together I guessThe thing about winter that River enjoyed wasn’t the cold. No thanks. There was nothing appealing about the outdoors during the colder months of the year. Snow was a no-no, though still exceptionally pretty of course. What the dhampir did enjoy was the dark. It was usually followed by either a fire-lit cosy atmosphere, or a more exciting, mysterious vibe. Either way it made her evenings a little more enjoyable.
The corridors were poorly lit on a cloudy day, bringing this same feeling to River’s walk to her destination.
The taps of her shoes echoed softly through the corridors as she navigated the castle. The eerie unsettling aura creeping along as she entered new parts of the corridor. Cringing every now and then when she would pass another place she’d gotten lost in her early times at Hogwarts. She is in her third year now. For some reason she found it hard to believe. Time passed by quicker than one would notice, and the thought of graduation coming up in some years sent shivers down her spine. She knew it would feel like the day would slither along quicker than expected, just like anything in life usually does. Time doesn’t wait for anyone. She had no clue what she would want to do after Hogwarts. The ravenclaw always liked it here, though getting out into the world sounded tempting too. Sometimes differentiating the feeling of excitement and nerves is quite the challenge. Her open robes flowed softly in the gentle wind from her walk. Revealing a very casual pair of loose, dark jeans and a white striped t-shirt underneath. Her shiny prefect-badge displayed on the chest of her robes.
She swiftly turned a corner, and her eyes fell upon a person further along the corridor. They were walking quite a bit slower than River, and it didn't take long before they were nearly right beside each other, though River’s intention was to simply pass and carry on her merry way.
The moment River was about to pass the figure around a corner, she heard a thud, and a voice, somewhat familiar followed. Smirking slightly River stopped and looked at them in amusement “Are you trying to see whether the ghosts have had an effect on you at all?”, she said slightly tauntingly, though in reality she was just curious as to why this person was seemingly trying to cut the corner by passing through the brick wall. “I do think your toes might appreciate you sticking to… not, walking through walls”, she continued as she pushed a messy lock of red hair out of her face. “But I mean that’s just what I’d assume. I’m not going to pretend I know what’s going on here”, she added, looking them up and down.

Upon learning that she was not, as she'd previously assumed, alone, Sapphire nearly choked. Great, now I've made a fool of myself, the pale-haired girl thought. She cringed before looking to the voice. It seemed little familiar, but it wasn't exactly ringing any bells. And after looking at the girl, it didn't exactly clear much up. She knew quite a few redheads. And sure, they all looked different, but sometimes things got a little bit confusing and muddled and she didn't know who's face was who. Facts and faces, despite only having one different letter, were very different.
Under the assumption that the redhead didn't recognize her and taking into consideration that she didn't recognize the girl either, she decided to take the safe route... not. She didn't know what the safe route was. More likely was that she'd say something impulsive or obnoxious. "I doubt the ghosts would bother associating with me." And she was probably misinterpreting that statement, but at this point, she didn't care. "There are worse things that could happen, however," she said. Plenty of worse things. She could get a limb cut off. She could die. She could end up walking into some prank placed around the school by some inconsiderate dumbass. There were endless possibilities, in the worst way possible.
Had there ever been a time when she didn't think like that? Like the world could end any second? Probably not. She was just able to ignore it normally. She vaguely noticed that the girl was a prefect. She didn't think she knew any prefects, but there were plenty of people she'd fallen out of contact with. She cleared her throat, snapping herself out of her thoughts. "Er, sorry, I spaced out for a second. I mean, I was spaced out before but..." she trailed off, sighing harshly. She couldn't go a single conversation without screwing up her words, could she?

Perhaps walking up to someone who’d just walked into a wall seemed, not very necessary, River couldn’t help but want to see what was up. Who knows, perhaps it was a minor who’d somehow gotten their hands on an alcoholic butterbeer and were now stumbling around the castle endangering themselves. Though as far as River could see, this person wasn’t under the influence, but just simply, not paying attention to their path.
Looking at the girl, she did look extremely familiar. Not in a, I’ve seen you around, type of way, but rather a, it’s been a long time sort of way. As if that really made any sense at all. The poorly lit corridor didn’t help make her face stand out any clearer in her memory either. Oh well, she assumed it would come to her eventually.
“You’re not wrong”, she replied, there were absolutely a chance of worse injuries than some stubbed toes around here. “There are many stairs in this place”, she continued, remembering that one time she’d slipped on the first step of a long staircase and tumbled all the way down. Not a fun experience, and she would not recommend it to anyone.
A moment passed. Of complete silence. Except for the faint crackling of a torch flame burning not too far away. Rivers' eyes narrowed in confusion as the girl seemed to be thinking about something. Though before she’d even have the time to ask if anything was up she spoke again. “No don’t apologize”, she said quickly, realizing the girl was probably headed somewhere River shook her head “Oh, I must be keeping you from getting where you need to be”, she said.
River herself really didn’t have a specific place to be for the time being. Her plan had been to head for the common room to take a break with a nice cup of tea, but she was in no hurry to do so. “Please, don’t let me keep you”, she gestured to the corridor onward. “I mean, unless you’d like company?”.
It would have been understandable if the girl just wanted River to leave her alone. That was, in fact, very much how the ravenclaw felt herself most of the time. She never appreciated it when people stuck their nose in her business, and she wasn’t going to judge anyone for feeling the same way.

Ah, this is so short.
Sapph shook her head dismissively. "I don't really have anywhere to go. I was simply wandering to pass the time - I don't really like congested areas such as my common room or... well, most places, I suppose. The corridors are usually pretty empty," she commented with a shrug. She didn't like really crowded places, but sometimes a little company wasn't too bad. There were a lot of nice scenarios that involved silence between people. But why had she told the girl that? Was it oversharing? Perhaps. Would that be considered odd? There was a possibility.
She disregarded the thought and shoved it out of her head.
But of course, there was always the opinion of the other person in the scenario. The redhead had technically been the one to offer, but what if she was misinterpreting the words? "I... I don't mind the company," she said.
She didn't know this girl, not even her name. At least, she didn't think. It seemed awkward. She was used to awkwardness, but that didn't mean she liked it. She sighed to herself, bowing her head before looking back towards the redhead. "Erm, what's your name, anyway?" She hesitated. Should she throw her name in? Maybe. Probably. "...I'm Sapph," she said after a second. "Sapphire Riddle."

River felt she could relate to the white-haired girl on at least one side. The corridors were particularly peaceful at this time, and a great way to get some quiet time with one's thoughts. The ravenclaw would sometimes take a walk around the castle if there was nothing else occupying her time, which in all honesty wasn’t very often. Though her patrol rounds did give her some time to do exactly that. They were usually pretty quiet and uneventful, and had certainly given her a new appreciation for the castles' many winding corridors and rooms. River had really become familiar with many of them since her new position.
The girl had responded that she didn’t mind the company, making River feel somewhat more comfortable.
Had it not been for the girl mentioning it, River would probably have forgotten all about introductions. Snapping out of a train of thought, she looked at her, the name too, it seemed so familiar. A moment of silence blanketed the two for a split second before a thought popped up in River’s mind. “Sapphire...?, another moment of thought passed. “ Right! From charms class all the way back to like, what? First year?”, she said thoughtfully, remembering Sapphire might not have recognized River either. “Man. How could I forget. I’m River, I remember you were one of the first people I ever spoke to when I got here”. Now the memory was more clear, Sapphire had helped River after witnessing her weak attempts at casting the spell incendio. If only River had known more about why her spellcasting was so flawed back then, she could have saved herself so much self-hatred. Though that was in the past, and now nothing more than a memory.
The school was big, and there weren’t few students to come across during your time at Hogwarts. Some names and people eventually just slightly fade to memories, though you never know when you might stumble across them again… stumbling across something.

Sapph's eyes widened slightly. She knew the girl had seemed familiar! All it took was the name to make it click into place. She found herself nodding, the memory coming back to her. "I remember. Nice to see you again," she said with a small, lopsided smile. It wasn't terribly visible. She still didn't know how to really smile. It was more of a hit-and-run thing when she gave a natural smile. Didn't happen often.
Should I say something? Ask something? she thought, a bit of nerve creeping up on her. She didn't normally encounter people she'd met before. In the large school, it was rare - especially because most of the time she met people in weird situations. "Uhm, how have you been? It has been a while since that charms class. First-year seems to have been so long ago." She'd said something familiar before- and then went off on a mildly philosophical tangent about how time was weird and confusing.
It seems like I only meet redheads, she thought a little ironically. Not that it was a bad thing, as most of them were fairly nice.
After a second, her mind finally went silent. A rare reprieve. At least now she could talk to River without weird mental comments. Even though they'd probably come back. And continue to put her through rather unpleasant tangents.

It all made sense now why she’d seemed so familiar. Feeling the mental barrier between her and the memory lift was nothing but relieving. One thing was for sure, it had been a long time, just as Sapphire mentioned. First year seemed like ages ago… It was ages ago. River wondered why they’d never talked since then, she didn’t feel they got off on the wrong foot? Or perhaps Sapphire thought so. It was very normal to have two very different percepcion of one conversation. River gave the girl another careful smile “Yeah I’ve been quite good”, she answered. “A lot has changed I guess, I would say for the better”... at least in some ways.
The ravenclaw cringed slightly as she thought back to her first year. She was so… open. She shared so many things she’d deem too personal to share now. She’d changed, that was for sure. Her situation in general had improved, though certain parts of her life still seemed to put a tormenting weight on her shoulders. Though this was nothing but her own business, and she didn’t feel the need for anyone else to hear about it.
“What about you? Had any interesting experiences these past years?”, she wondered and ran a hand through her red locks.
Back during first year, River assumed there would be a lot more silly trouble happening around Hogwarts, considering its size and diversity. Like pulling stupid pranks on others, or staying out past curfew. Though in the end she’d come to find there were a lot more serious things going on around here, and she knew there were most likely some of those things that they’d both share. Like the happenings at the ball, or something about giants, hags, anything. Life at Hogwarts was, overall, not very uneventful.

She gave a small, wry laugh. "Yeah, some things. I mean, I've somehow evaded the brunt of it but that's probably just because I don't interact..." she muttered. What about the whole sister-Los Angeles confusion? I can't remember if that was before or after our encounter... she thought.
If there wasn't anything physical, there was certainly a lot more mental baggage. That could probably be said for anyone, though. She ran a hand through her hair and pushed her glasses back up, sort-of resolving the issue of them sliding down her nose. "Not really much this year, of course. 'Cept maybe the ball." She hadn't really even been involved in that for long though. The most exciting thing she probably did was "make friends" which was a very childish response. And she liked to avoid those kinds of things.
She sighed at her own emotionally stunted thoughts. They made it very hard to hold a normal conversation. Sure, she could talk to people when they're at a low point in terms of mental state, but what did that matter? Most people would not come to her in such a state. Most people didn't even know her. Not that they'd want to.
She didn't much mind that River - well, anyone really - didn't encounter her again. For her own self deprecating reasons, she assumed that they just wouldn't want to hang around her. But that may not always be the case. Just in case, she wouldn't pry to much into it.

[/font]River nodded as she listened to Sapphire speak. Honestly she wished she knew more about all the strange happenings at Hogwarts, though she didn’t have a lot of information about it. “I get what you mean. I’ve only had a couple weird encounters recently, though most of what I’ve heard are just rumours, and I don’t even have many of those”, she knew there were talk of hags, and giants were an issue at one point, in the end there was a lot, and River had done a crap job at keeping up. She hoped a chance to change that would present itself soon enough.
Sapphire mentioned the ball, memories flashed back to it for a split second. Or rather back to multiple of the events that she’d been to. Those were mostly where she’d personally experienced anything god down. Fires were a big thing, and very much a recurring theme at all of them. “You know I’m quite thankful the dances have helped cure my fear of fire though”, she said and chuckled lightly. Perhaps that wasn’t funny… perhaps it was just too soon…
“So, I was headed to the Common Room, if you’d like to tag along then you are very welcome to”, she said with a court smile. “I mean as far as you could come along of course, bringing you into the common room wouldn’t be the best of ideas”, she added.
