Stealing Books
Marcus Iwasaki strolled into the Hogwarts library with a relaxed stride. This place had become a common stomping ground for him over the last month since his appointment to the Head of Ravenclaw House. The little free time he had between his expanded duties was spent here usually - either refreshing his mind with riddles, or trying to research the hags that had cursed him and his companions during the end-of-summer hagfest. Although this library did not offer the most advanced knowledge on hags, he had owl-ordered a few books and found the library to be a calm place to read. Especially in one of the little nooks where no one dared to disturb him.7 October 2020, before lunch
The foreign schools would be arriving soon, and he had stepped up his dress game considerably since his time as caretaker. It had started small. Ditching the leather jacket that had become a staple for him for years in favor of a nice dress shirt. Today was one of the nicer days, where he was wearing both dress pants and a dress shirt. Maybe he would even wear a tie when greeting the foreign schools. But that was a thought for later, because right now, his amber eyes had landed on a book title that sounded interesting. Another riddle book to study.
Marcus grabbed the small book from the shelf he had been passing by and opened it briefly to skim its contents. Perfect. He could bring this to lunch with him. He lifted his head, prepared to head down to the Great Hall, when his eyes met those of a redheaded woman looking his way.
@Robyn Finley, the new school librarian. She had been here almost a week, but Marcus had not said more than a few words to the woman despite being among the Heads of House that hired her. But it's not like she was exactly seeking out interaction with him either.
Despite making sudden and accidental eye contact, Marcus merely nodded in her direction before turning his back on her with book in hand. It was time to go eat, and he knew the value of a good meal for both his body and mind to operate at full capacity. With that thought, he headed for the exit of the library.
Marcus' Intimidation is in effect.It is a sentiment that enters people's hearts when they are in your presence. They feel dis-ease when you are present, even if the interaction is casual or even friendly.

@Marcus IwasakiRobyn had only been in her position for five days. There was still much adjustment to be done. The library felt like an old friend that she was getting reacquainted with after many years of not talking. She had to develop a rapport with the assistant librarians that had been taken care of the library enough to help her guide through how it ran compared to the old libraries that she worked at. It wasn't all too unfamiliar. What was deeply unfamiliar, and her greatest battle truly, was getting to know the people. Not only did she had to get to know an entirely new staff all with very specific jobs within the castle, but also the hundreds of students that would come in and out of the library on a daily basis. There was already an idea of who the regulars were, but in five days it could be an outlier pattern that was false.
Today she happened to be doing work at the desk, not one of her favorite responsibilities, she would much rather be wandering around to see all the new books that the ancient library had in. Greet students and help them find what they needed. But, in such a glamorous life of a Head Librarian there was paperwork to be done. She had noticed the Head of House of Ravenclaw walk in, after all he was much taller than the rest of the students so he stuck out like a sore thumb. There was something about him that was off-putting but she couldn't figure it out. She chocked it up to her inevitable anxiety around new people and tried to wrangle the feelings as best as she could. He had been polite in their brief interactions, and surely the school wouldn't hire anyone particularly dangerous.
The observant librarian's eyes narrowed, watching him wander into the shelves before she returned her attention to the work in front of her. The first people she had memorized were the Headmaster as well as the Head of Houses. The rest of the professors and staff would slowly come after, but her memory was meant for books and various forms of literature, not names. It didn't take him long before he re-emerged from the stacks with a single book in hand. She glanced up from the book in her hand, setting down the work she was doing in prep to help him check out the book. But... he nodded and turned towards the exit? Her voice squeaked out in a small stutter, a blatant tell of when she was incredibly nervous. "M-Mr. Iwasaki? You s-still need to check o-out." A polite smile, clasped hands. This was her job. She was valid in what she was asking. This wasn't something she's not allowed to do, although his presence definitely didn't make her feel as if she could call him out.
This is fine. Everything is fine.

Before Marcus could make it more than a few steps towards the exit with his book, he heard the librarian's voice. It sounded off for some reason, and he turned back around to face her as he processed her words.
"Check out?" Marcus repeated, his brows furrowing slightly. Why did he need to check out? He was going to lunch and then would bring the book right back. But- Well, of course she didn't realize his intent. He doubted that she was a Legilimens. He started making his way back towards her desk, so they weren't calling out to each other across the room.
As the Ravenclaw Head of House approached, he couldn't help noticing the librarian in a slightly different light. Despite her apparently timid demeanor (an impression he got from the fact that she rarely spoke, and now she seemed to be stuttering), she was quite beautiful. The allure reminded him of someone he had met before, but he could not immediately recall who. It was a frustrating moment, looking at the redheaded woman and trying to recall a memory that was just out of reach. But as he planted himself in front of her desk, he pushed the frustration to the back of his mind and showed her the book that he was taking. A small thing on riddles.
"Allow me to explain. I'm just taking this book to lunch and I'll be back with it right after," he said, acknowledging the need for her to know where the book was. @Marcus IwasakiRobyn couldn't help but be a little flabbergasted by the man in front of her. Surely this was a jest, wasn't it? Had Marcus never been to a library before this? She knew some people didn't like the library, but to avoid it for your whole life seemed like a little bit extreme. This seemed like a moment to be more understanding than anything, she didn't want to assume that he knew the processes of the library... even though he was the Head of House of Ravenclaw. "Yes, a standard practice in libraries to keep records of what books have left and returned to the library. Surely... you know of this?" For a keeper of words, tact was not her greatest skill. But this was an issue she could see coming up for a first year but not a full grown adult.
Her eyebrows furrowed with his explanation, as if that would make it better. This man thinks he can just walk out with the books? That's not how libraries work. Robyn's years of being a librarian kicked in, while there was a nervousness in the pit of her stomach this was her area. This was her domain, and Marcus was just a visitor. "Apologies Mr. Iwasaki, but that is simply not how a library works. Students are not free to come and go with books just for meal periods, so I'm not exactly sure where the notion that adults can do it came from." Her hands were clasped tightly in front of her, before one of them reached out to take the book that was in his hands. "Books are to be checked out whenever they are on their way out. Even if its just for a lunch break. We must keep tight records in case another student would like the book you're holding, or in case it suddenly has damage we can look in the past list of who's checked it out to see who might've done it. This is not me implying that you would damage the precious books of the library, but we do have procedures here. I would appreciate you as a Head of House setting an example for the students that you lead." Her voice was terse and held an air of importance around the words. Libraries were a very serious matter.
"I can get you checked out quite quickly Mr. Iwasaki, its a process that will take no more than just a moment of your time." The tight smile of stress had turned into a quite prideful one. This was what she was good at.

When Ms Finley took it upon herself to explain the process of checking out books, Marcus fought hard to keep his expression neutral. Did she think he was daft? Of course he knew what checking out was, he had been to plenty of libraries in his lifetime - he was quite familiar with the process. Did she think he was a full grown adult with no understanding of how borrowing books worked? No matter, he would make an effort not to hold these words against her. Perhaps she genuinely, somehow believed that he was new to the library system.
After he explained he was just taking it to lunch, the woman seemed flabbergasted by the idea. She went so far as to compare him to the students, as if he thought he was above the law just because he knew that students couldn't just borrow books without logging. The allure that he had noted about her before was quickly becoming a forgotten attribute. Although he had wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, she was going a bit far.
"Ms Finley-" Marcus was going to try to explain, but she suddenly took the book that she had been showing him. Keeping tight records. Damaged books. Procedures. She sounded needlessly troubled by the whole situation. At the terse smile she offered him, Marcus' own lips tightened and he could only muster to look not as annoyed as he was.
"As you wish, Ms Finley," Marcus said after a beat. It's not like he was going to stop her from checking out the book she had taken from him. Yes, this was her job, checking out and keeping track of the expansive Hogwarts library collection. But to go so far as to lecture him on library procedures and the reasoning behind them - he felt very much looked down upon, an ironic statement considering she was ever-so-slightly shorter than him. He waited until she had started the checkout process to continue.
"I will, of course, go back to checking out myself each time, as that is your policy. I'm actually quite familiar with the process," his voice grew a little bit terse at this, when referencing the way she had spoken to him. "Jo and Tolly kept excellent records in the absence of the last librarian, so I did not always feel the need to check out if they saw me with the book. They just logged it when I returned." When it came down to it, Marcus had no real issue with checking out the books - sure it was annoying to do it every single time when he was here as often as he was lately - but the way she had approached him about the whole situation was awfully assumptive.
