Verner did not have a *most favourite* subject yet. He had always been quick learner and it was no different with magic. Despite being muggle born and completely new to magical world, he did reasonably well in all classes.

Today for some strange reason none of Verner’s usual potion class partners and friends have been in the class. Verner did not realise it until he has been paired with a blonde Gryfindor girl he did not know yet. Not that it mattered particularly, but it was always better to work with somebody you knew. Verner hoped they would get along fine, especially because they would have to work together for five weeks.

To break the ice and to get their project work started quickly, Verner introduced himself to the girl and he smiled. *”Hello, my name is Verner, let’s make it a success together.”*

She seemed like a nice girl, but as experience has taught him, looks can be deceiving. Because of that Verner has decided to act neutrally for now. Her being quiet and cooperative throughout the whole class helped him to focus at the potion preparing tasks, and it also allowed him to observe her a bit more. He noticed she acted a bit shy, maybe even nervous?

This change of his usual potions routine might have been for the better, because without talking too much, their progress seemed to be quite good, maybe even among the top in the class and Verner did not mind that.

What did disturb him a little though, was his inner feeling of being constantly watched.

Verner being adept at hiding would always quickly recognise he was being watched. This time however, the intent of the *watcher* did not seem malicious, despite has already lasted for several days . *”What does the onlooker want from me?”*, he wondered as he silently stirred the liquid in their cauldron.

He would soon learn more.

Lesson 2 with @Verner Llf

The next lesson came and Katniss was quite nervous about working with Verner. Last week they had worked well together. This week she dared to actually utter a sentence, “I’ll prepare this time of you want to make the potion?” At breakfast he had seen him read the letter, smiling. She wondered if he would mention it today. She could just imagine them together, walking through the grounds, studying in the library. But that was her imagination, this was real, first she needed to find out if he liked her. She set to work, cutting and gathering ingredients. Towards the end of the class the students had to fill out some worksheets. She volunteered to write, forgetting that her handwriting would betray her, as it had been used on the note to Verner. The teacher marked the sheets and handed them back to the students. They were told that they could keep or throw them out. Katniss didn’t need the sheet and Verner said he didn’t either. So he took it over to the bin and put it in. Katniss then hurried out of class, looking back only once to say, “Bye.” Little did she know she pat Verner had really done with the sheet...

Verner still did feel his *watcher’s* gaze today, just as the day before and several days before that. It felt almost like a game, every time he was about to catch the watcher at observing him, he would either get distracted by something, or be just too late. Girls were good at hiding the way they watched boys.

However after reading the letter during breakfast, it made a bit more sense to him. Most probably it was indeed a girl. Verner still was not sure who the girl was, but he had a slight suspicion.

*”Who knows, it might get confirmed after this class”*, he thought as he entered potions classroom. He tried to pay attention to handwriting of other girls, but he had no luck so far.

When Verner got to the desk assigned to him and Katniss, she had already been there. He greeted her with a smile *”Hello Katniss… ”*, trying to carefully observe her reactions and her face complexion.

*”Hm… She might look a bit too nervous?”*, but that would not be enough to confirm his suspicion. The handwriting could probably be a solid hint, he figured.

The class went on without much interaction between them outside of what was necessary, however as Verner paid attention to her working, Katniss proved to be very nice girl, she looked cute and did just as well in her studies…

Today they have switched roles, and it might have been some kind of luck or destiny’s hand, because by this switch Verner got to act as intermediary between the professor and their team, also submitting worksheets for grading.

*”Oh, this looks rather similar… ”* Verner smiled as he received her worksheet and briefly looked over it. Did she want to give him more hints?

Their team was quite efficient again, and managed to score well, and time flew quickly. Verner did not get to question Katniss during the class, so when she suddenly said her bye at the end of the class he finally had the option to cross-examine the letter and her worksheet. It was evident. She must have written it.

*”Time to ask her directly”* Verner prepared himself mentally as he set out after her.
