Amazing might not be the word most people would use to describe the Owlery at Hogwarts, but Gia wasn't usually like most people anyway. So. . . amazing was the very first word that came to mind when she saw the circular room full of owls, because to her, that was exactly what the place was. Really, how could the Owlery not be considered amazing by one? Well, aside from the chill, the bird poop on the ground, and the fact that there were a bunch of old carcasses of the owls' old dinners lying around, of course.
The young girl had decided to explore the castle that day, and had eagerly arrived at the Owlery doors only a few minutes earlier. She hadn't really had a chance to adventure around the castle very much in the previous weeks due to classes starting up and schoolwork getting harder and harder, but today her mind was set upon exploring. And when this happened, well, there was no stopping her. Gia raced up one flight of stairs then another, ascending farther and farther into the tower with each step she took. Only slightly out of breath when she reached the top floor, the eleven year old looked around at her surroundings.
From this level, she could see the tops of the owls' heads and past that, all the way back down to the floor where she'd started. But that wasn't the only thing she could see from here: the Gryffindor was also able to see out a large window onto the school grounds. "Wow," Gia murmured, entranced by the gorgeous view. "This is incredible!" The girl stayed there for a few minutes, but then she remembered the main reason she'd made the Owlery her first stop on her adventure.
Slipping a hand into her sweater pocket, Gia pulled out the letter she'd written the day before and ran back down one flight of stairs, looking for an owl to send it to her family. When she'd chosen one, the Gryffindor girl quickly tied the letter to it's leg and gave it a soft pat on the head (which resulted in the owl pecking at her hand). A little while later, the bird had flown through the window and out of sight, and the first year decided to go back up to the top of the tower and look at the view again for a bit. It really was pretty up there. . .
Right as she stepped up to the top again though, a owl with tawny colored feathers flew towards her, almost running straight into her. Luckily, the girl jumped out of the way just in time, and it landed on a perch back down on the second floor. Then, the door to the Owlery opened, and another student stepped inside. When she saw the owl, the girl walked towards it and began untying the letter. Hoping she wouldn't scare the other student, Gia called down to her. "Hello!"

After the stress of the lock-in, Aspen realized just how much she missed her parents and 'normal' life. Heading into the owlery for a breath of air and a chance to write her parents a letter. Owls hoot around her and sun shines through the window as she pulls out a fresh piece of parchment, her quill, and some ink.
The quill hovers over the parchment, with nothing but a greeting written. How do you write to your parents about going to school with werewolves or tell them about your Transfiguration lessons when half of those words are new to them?
Holding back tears, Aspen rips up her page, so much for writing home. She curls up as silent tears start to fall and does not realize when someone else enters the tower, and those silent tears are not that silent after all.
A pretty brunette, who also looks like a first-year, walks over to Aspen as she unties a letter. Bright and happy looking, maybe she'll be able to pull Aspen out of this rut.
Brushing her hair away from her eyes and looking up at the other girl, Aspen manages a quiet, "Hi."
Shoving the fractured parchment, quill, and ink into her bag, Aspen looks down, slightly shyly, embarrassed someone found her like this. But its fine, it is all fine.

As she approached the other student, Gia realized something that made her take a small step back and her voice grow softer. The other girl. . . she was crying. Shiny tears were still falling down her cheeks, and she looked quite miserable. "Are you okay?" The Gryffindor asked, honestly concerned for the girl.
From up close, not only could the eleven year old see the tears on the other's face, but she could also see a lot more about her appearance. The student sitting on the ground in front of her was pretty, with straight black hair and darkly colored eyes. She looked around Gia's age, and was probably another first year. Glancing at the colors beneath the girl's robes, the first year saw a lot of green. Some people might have immediately assumed that she was a Slytherin student, but Gia's mind did not jump there. She knew that the colors people wore didn't necessarily mark what house they were in: she herself was wearing green as well, and she was in Gryffindor, so. . .
Gia had been so distracted with trying to figure a few things out about the girl in front of her that she barely noticed that the other student had spoken. "Oh, hi!" she responded. When the other student hurriedly shoved something into her bag, the Gryffindor raised an eyebrow, wondering what it was. She managed to catch a glimpse of the jagged edge of a ripped piece of paper before it made it all the way inside, but the girl didn't say anything about it. . . although she was a little intrigued. Whatever was on that paper could be the reason the black haired girl was crying, couldn't it? Actually, it was almost likely. Still, even though she was curious, the first year kept her mouth shut. For as long as she could, at least.
Soon, the silence got a little overwhelming. While the other girl seemed fine with the quiet, Gia was not, and she couldn't help but speak. And plus, she did need to introduce herself, didn't she? "I'm Gia," the eleven year old said. "I'm in Gryffindor, what house are you in?" She might as well start a conversation, right? The girl was also kind of prous of her house; after learning more about it she knew that it suited her perfectly.

Aspen blinks tears back as the other girl asks if she is okay, "I-I'm fine," is about all that manages to come out.
The other girl seems to inspect her, eyes rolling up and down Aspen's small body- but not a creepy way at all. The girl, she seems nice, though little is known about her. She is dressed simply, in leggings and a t-shirt, casual compared to Aspen's somewhat dressy overalls and combat boots.
The other girl says hi again, emitting a look from Aspen. There goes the spell that not even the Headmaster could cast, a spell of peace and subtle silence. A safe cauldron for a girl's thoughts to brew.
The other girl, Gia it seems, introduces herself as a Gryffindor. The house of the brave. Scratching her neck, Aspen realizes that Gia is waiting for her introduction. "Aspen Summers, Hufflepuff."
It is weird isn't it, that when introducing yourself at this school, you share your house. Yes, the houses are more than the colors you wear, but must one really need to define themselves with one trait, throw themselves into a box that defines them for seven, if not more years? At least one thing remains constant, Aspen is able to note as an owl flys overhead with a package in hand; Hogwarts is weird.

Although the black haired girl said she was alright, Gia noted the tears in her eyes. "Are you sure?" she asked softly. Then, the eleven year old added, "It's okay not to be alright, you know." The Gryffindor gave the other girl a small, encouraging smile. She knew what it felt like to not be okay - and the hardest thing for her was always just to admit that she was sad or upset. After that though, everything usually ended up working out. . . usually. Of course, she wasn't positive about what the girl's situation was like - for all she knew, someone could have died. But Gia was guessing that it wasn't anything as horrible as that; most people would be much more upset in that situation.
There was a beat of silence as the eleven year old waited for the girl sitting a few feet away from her to reply. It took a few moments, and Gia had just opened her mouth to say something when the other first year spoke up again. Her name was Aspen, and she was in Hufflepuff. Gia nodded. "That's house with the badger for their mascot thingy, right? The house of the loyal and kind?" She had memorized each house's particular traits and such when she first arrived at Hogwarts, and sometimes the girl liked to show off a bit - although to most it wouldn't really look like showing off, since a lot of the other students had known about magic beforehand, unlike Gia.
"Hogwarts is amazing, isn't it?" Gia asked the girl, following Aspen's gaze to another owl flying overhead with a package in it's grip. "Even after a month of being here with all this magical stuff, I'm still not used to it." The Gryffindor laughed. "Every time I see something like that - you know, an owl carrying mail - I always have to look again. It's like my brain still doesn't believe that such a thing is possible." she smiled at the Hufflepuff girl. "What about you? Did you know about any of this stuff before arriving last month?" Gia figured that Aspen could use a distraction, even if it was just a simple conversational question.

The other girl, she knows exactly what to say, because it is okay not to be okay, and that just lets the floodgates out. Between big alligator tears, as her dad calls them, Aspen is able to get the words out. "I...No I'm not okay."
Gia goes on and talks about the traits of Aspen's house. Loyalty, kindness- all good things but they do not make a good witch. Aspen is not brave or even that smart, and there has to be a reason not many powerful witches and wizards were Hufflepuffs. Still, the black-haired girl nods along with the brunette.
It seems Gia can read her mind, as she goes to talk about how amazing magic is. The way it comes out, it seems Gia is a fellow muggle-born, thrust into a world where right is left and up is down. Aspen takes a breath to steady herself before wiping her face with a Kleenex in her pocket, "No I didn't, it's so overwhelming though. You know, I was always a science and math kid. I liked knowing how the world works and now, it feels like everything I learned and believed in is just...wrong."
Aspen scoots over on her bench, making room for Gia to sit next to her as she waits for the girl's thoughts.

A Distraction? Okay!
@Aspen Summers 1 November, 2020The Hufflepuff girl's walls seem to break down after Gia tells her that it's perfectly alright not to be okay, and soon tears are falling quickly down her cheeks. A little surprised, the young Gryffindor hesitates before saying anything else, but then finally replies, "What's wrong?" Her expression is one of genuine concern for the other first year. She wondered if Aspen would be upset with her for asking, because she knew some people didn't like when others poked their noses into their own business. The eleven year old didn't really think so, however, since the other student didn't seem like the type to do so. . .
Aspen nodded along with what she was saying, making the Gryffindor smile. At least the tears had begun to slow the tiniest bit. But there was something about the girl's expression that Gia couldn't seem to figure out. When she moved on to talking about how wonderful and amazing the whole wizarding world was - and magic in general, of course - a flicker of some emotion showed in the Hufflepuff's eyes. Luckily, the first year didn't need to try and read it on her own, because Aspen took a breath, wiped her eyes, and explained everything a little but more.
When she was finished, Gia frowned. She felt bad for Aspen, and she understood where she was coming from as well, having grown up with "muggles" too. When the other girl scooted over on the bench, the eleven year old gave her a small smile and sat down beside her. It was only then that she finally responded, after having a few seconds to think about what to say. "It is overwhelming, I know exactly what you mean," she began, agreeing with the Hufflepuff. "But. . . not everything we learned back in muggle school was completely wrong, you know," she added.
It was true, a bunch of the things that they'd learned were kind of wrong, but that was only because everyone back at their normal human schools didn't know anything about magic or this side of the world. Still, Gia knew that none of these particular thoughts would comfort the other girl at all, and so she said something else out loud when she opened her mouth to speak again. "Aspen, while everything we learned when we were younger may not match up completely with everything we learn here, there's got to be some similarities, don't you think?" Then, the Gryffindor remembered something she thought Aspen would like to know. "I also heard that there's an Arithmetic class later on as well," she said with a smile.
There wasn't much that Gia could think of to do to help the other student out, but she was going to try as hard as she could to at least do something for her. An idea quickly came to mind: she would distract the other girl. The eleven year old had never been the best at making others feel better, but she was a professional at getting people to turn their thoughts away from whatever was troubling them, even if it was only for a few minutes. Wheels began to spin in the young girl's mind, and a moment later she turned to Aspen with a grin on her face. "Come on," she said, pulling Aspen to her feet in an excited manner.
"We're going for an adventure."To be continued in another thread560 words
