The Fall Ball (The Hunt)
As Lindsey Springhall | open to interactions
Interacting with @Wyatt StarkeyA stream of red sparks flew out of her wand. This time the spell was unexpectedly successful, maybe better than anytime she had practiced in the charms classroom. But still it was intriguing, for nothing had happened.
Intriguing. So everything she thought wasn’t right, everything was just only a guess…she half closed her eyes. No… She blinked. How disappointing. The spell seemed that she was showing off, but the truth was she wasn’t. She just wished to help. Someone had casted Revelio, and the hidden lines showed up.
F…I…C…E…office.
“I think I understand it now.” suddenly she raised up her head and looked to Wyatt. “The lines are spells, though I didn’t get the first line right. It’s…Crucio. And the lines tell us to go to…the caretaker’s office.” She pointed out, as a few others had already disappeared in the direction of the office. “Let’s carry on, maybe?” rather cheerful now, she offered, turned to the right way and followed the other inquisitive students. “We’ll see.” she whispered to him before running off.
Cheerfully she arrived at the caretaker’s office. What’s his name again, Paine, maybe? Probably he had hidden something in his office. Or something had broke into it. But by all means they had finally got the right direction. A small smile formed on her lips. Finally.
She saw students crowding in front of the door. Managing to get into the crowd, Lindsey peaked into the room. A huge cat was sitting there — guarding, observing. Almost as soon as Lindsey saw the cat, a name came into her mind — and it rang a bell. A Matagot.
“I…I think it’s a Matagot.” she whispered, and explained. “Normally harmless, but will attack if we are being offensive first.” Prudently she eyed the cat. What’s it doing? And what’s behind? She really wished to know, but was rather nervous about whether it would attack if she acted first.
A brave one, someone who’s probably a first year [Piper], was now attempting to slip into the office. Well…she blinked. Maybe she had to cast some spells to distract the cat, and let it leave its current place. Then they maybe could see what’s behind. “Let’s fool it. And see what’s behind.” she suggested firmly. “Avifors.” Lindsey raised up her wand, aiming at any small objects around (up to the moderators’ choice). Maybe it would help to distract the cat…well, which cat didn’t like chasing after birds? Even if it’s a magical creature?Action: move to fourth location, hopefully with Wyatt Starkey, actively casting Avifors, attempting to get the cat leave its current location and see what’s behind (the times of spell casting can be decided by the moderators)

The red-haired student who had gave the caretaker's office's door a slight kick earlier was now interrogating a painting together with her friend. Gregorí looked at the two approvingly, hoping that they could get any useful clue somehow. From what he had overheard, the painting subject seemed to be reluctant to cooperate, lamenting all the time instead - but now he also had overheard the words "plan" and "he's part of". The Horned Serpent really hoped the two students could make Toa spoke up.
The Mexican turned his attention back to the huge cat - or the Matagot, if his assumption was correct.
A girl in white cardigan was bowing to it, her eyes straight into its, as if approaching a Hippogriff. Gregorí had no clue if this was the correct way to approach a Matagot, so he was fifty-fifty with her way. In the Muggle world, it was not advisable to look a feline straight into its eyes if one tried to earn its trust, since felines considered eye contact to be an invitation to fight - but this was the wizarding world, and the creature was not a cat either.
Another was trying to grab its attention by attempting to cast Avifors. Again, a good way if it had been a cat. Gregorí slightly doubted it would work - not because it was a bad idea, but because the creature was guarding something. If it was a good guard, it might not let even birds distract its attention.
However, he was concerned when he noticed two other girls. ("Where are the boys? It'd be nice if I'm not the only one here!" he moaned inside.) One of them tried to get past it - would it consider a provoking move? Gregorí thought so - at least, he was 90% sure about this. The other pupil tried to cast Lumos Maxima - what if it hurt the Matagot's eyes and thus provoked it?
And then, perhaps out of panic, the Ilvermony student let his wand fell back into his suit pocket as he ran toward the creature. Gregorí himself would, later, be unsure if his approach should be credited brave or stupid or maybe both (these two traits seemed to overlap often, right?): he extended one hand to its nose, familiarizing the Matagot with his scent, while his other hand stroke the creature gently behind its ears - the way one would show affection to a cat.

OOC Note: I wrote this under the assumption that the creature was roughly the size of an adult tiger. Should this be incorrect, of if in any means it was impossible for Gregorí to do so (such as if the creature was too gigantic and it was standing so it would be too tall to reach behind the ears), please feel free to make a slight change.

MODERATION POST
FOURTH LOCATION
The only boy in the group, Gregorí Erkens (@Ginevra Tsuchiya), recognized the creature immediately. Seriously, where were the other strong heroes to protect the poor girls in need? Was he supposed to do all this by himself? Although these ladies seemed very happy to do the protecting themselves. It was a Matagot, a magical creature you better did not provoke but approached in a friendly way. He hurried to share this knowledge with the group of students and appealed to their common sense. He forgot only one thing: This was Hogwarts, and where Hogwarts students walked, there was usually chaos.OOC Note: A few of you are mentioned several times, we made your names bold to help you find your mentions. Please skim the entire post if possible.
@Piper Clark tried a gray area, something that wasn't really provocative, was it? She tried to sneak past the animal. But that would not work, because the Matagot was not willing to let her pass.Choice of reaction: attack, hiss
The blue eyes of the cat were fixed on the young girl and with an aggressive hiss and a sidestep it blocked her way. The height of the cat reached the girl's waist and now it blocked the entrance to the office with its body, its pointed fangs bared.
@Callista Lovis tried the Hippogriff approach. If you have to be polite and friendly to a creature to get its respect, you should show some respect yourself first. So, she bowed to the huge cat. This gesture of respect seemed to calm the Matagot. Although it still looked at Piper, it hid its teeth again and watched the scene attentively with twitching ears, but it no longer looked as if it would attack at any moment.Charisma Roll (DC 15+2 (Lovely Creature)): 20
How could they possibly get past the animal without attacking it? @Lindsey Springhall, normally accompanied by @Wyatt Starkey, had an idea: Distraction! Every cat, no matter how magical it was, liked chasing birds, right?
So, she raised her wand to turn something into a bird.Choice of target: Ana’s shoe, door handle, torch
Lindsey casts Avifors (DC 11+2 (Lovely Creature))
Wisdom Roll: 23
Lindsey Accuracy Roll: 23
Ana Evasion: 27 → spell misses
The young girl aimed for the shoe of the rude and loud Gryffindor, @Anastasia Beckett, but she wouldn’t sacrifice one of her fancy shoes for this experiment! With an elegant movement, she dodged the spell. Very reasonable, it was quite chilly. Without shoes you could easily catch a cold.
Gregorí Erkens (@Ginevra Tsuchiya) couldn't believe it as he watched the chaos unfold. So far they had been lucky, but if this continued, they would really upset the Matagot. So he had to step in as the hero and try to save the day once again. So he stormed (in a friendly manner, of course) toward the Matagot. The big cat allowed him to pounce on her to scratch her behind the ears. Was that a purr? Phew, maybe everything had gone well after all.Charisma Roll (DC 20+2 (Lovely Creature)): 22
@Ami Procoppio had met the group on the stairs and decided to skip the detour to the Gryffindor Common Room - not like there was anything of interest left there, anyway. Disregarding Gregorí’s warnings, with an elbow directed at Anastasia that we will let her decide if made any contact, Ami’s approach was distinctly more blunt than the rest of the group’s. Blinding the cat should provide distraction enough, right? And well, everyone else, too, but a quickly called warning should be enough.Well, there was a reason the Hufflepuff tended to rely on her fists rather than her wand, as @Mars T'ien could likely attest to. Instead of blinding light streaming from the tip of her wand, there was a small, rather pitiful flicker, and then the tip of her wand darkened again.Ami casts Lumos Maxima (DC 11 + 2 (Lovely Creature))
Wisdom Roll: 12
While the other students tried to sneak past, calm, or failed to offend the Matagot, two of the girls were busy with something else: Gaiz Toa’s painted figure had let something slip, something he hadn’t been intending to reveal. There had been a plan - although this hadn’t been part of it, at least to Gaiz’s knowledge - but what had it been? And who had planned it? Ignoring the Matagot, Cassie Heather McGregor-Martin (@Lucia Fox) and @Scarlett Aden were determined to intimidate him into revealing all he knew.
Threats of fire, threats of pain, but did they work?In short, they did not. In more detail, Gaiz seemed wildly offended by the redheaded Gryffindor in particular. Instead of telling them anything of use, he started yelling - again. “I shall not be treated like this! Kidnappers! Torturers! Arsonists! Release me at once!” His gaze fell upon the black cat, currently kept calm by Gregorí’s… surprisingly calming touch? Apparently he was more comforting to beasts than to humans. T’is an odd world, kids. But Gaiz was about to change that. “And what is this,” he added, loudly, disgust plain in his voice. “This… ugly creature, is it the one who took Giselle? Return her immediately, you miscreant, or I shall hunt you down and turn your skin into a new pair of dancing shoes!”Cassie Intimidation (DC 15 + 2 (Lovely Creature)): 11
Scarlett Intimidation (DC 15 + 2 (Lovely Creature)): nat 1 (Critical failure)
Ah, and for a moment, it had looked like the students had gotten lucky. With Callista and Gregorí’s actions, it had remained calm, Ami’s blinding spell had failed, things had looked so good for them… until Gaiz’s words drew the Matagot’s attention and ire. They were rather intelligent beasties capable of recognising demeanor and intent, and the aggression in Gaiz Toa’s voice was clear. The Matagot’s ears turned backward, it hissed, crouching backwards, ready to attack. But who would be the target? In a burst of speed, it sprung towards the offending painting - or rather, the girl holding it, Cassie. With all of its feline grace, it swiped its long, razor sharp claws at the girl’s legs.Choice of target: Piper, Scarlett, Cassie, GaizThe girl’s attempt at dodging was in vain, made clumsy by the painting in her hands. The supernatural cat’s claws caught her leg, slicing through fabric and flesh. The gashes immediately started to bleed.Matagot Auto-Miss (Terrible Presence): 1 -> No Auto-Miss
Matagot accuracy: 17 + 10 = 27

WHAT HAPPENED SO FAR…

- A ghost appeared in the Ballroom, proclaiming warnings of doom and tragedy, and challenged students to solve the mystery. He pointed to a silvery ghost cat as the guide, who at this point, has been named Star.
- Several students noticed odd things about the ghost:
- Dmitri Jones and Kara Capricorn shared that they noticed a crest on his robes that was later identified as stemming from the St. Mungo’s Hospital.
- Howard White noticed the Hufflepuff crest on his robes, but only shared this with Falentra Black, somewhat separate from the main group.
- Romeo Marchonné remembered odd silver stains on the ghost’s sleeves and told his companions about them… blood, maybe?
- The ghost cat led you to a painting, depicting a man who obviously had been attacked and was fighting for his life - but healing and repairing proved fruitless. Could anyone save him?
- Several students noticed odd things about the painting:
- Anastasia Beckett, Andrew Vance and Dmitri Jones pointed out an inscription below the painting: “Paran Taja saves Laiks Denbora”. Who was the man in the painting? Why was no one saving him?
- Dmitri Jones also noticed that the painting composition seemed somehow unbalanced, as did Sapphire Riddle. Maybe something was missing here!
- Andrew Vance pointed out a streak of blood on the floor of the painting. Maybe there had been a struggle? Had someone been dragged away - but by who, or what?
- Aida Mòrsgor-Ama Ellwood made anyone listening aware of a scrap of fabric on the floor in the painting, red in colour, and depicting a lion. Odd.
- Both Soren Silverwood and Callista Lovis had the idea to talk to nearby portraits to find out what had happened here. Both were pointed towards a painting that was supposed to be near the Gryffindor Common Room.
- The Gryffindor Common Room? Martyna Romero took the lead and ran off in this direction. It appeared that Star agreed with this, as the cat followed Tina’s departing steps. Star led the party to a painting near the realm of the Brave.
- There were several things that the students found out from this second painting:
- The man depicted in it was called Gaiz Toa.
- It didn’t take much prodding for him to admit his intense dislike for Paran Taja, that damn goody-two-shoes who always came running when someone called his name, and Laiks Denbora, who had apparently stolen his girl. Yes, obviously Denbora deserved to be stabbed for that - a deed Toa seemed to be rather proud of. The painting of the girl, Giselle could be found in the next corridor over.
- Some yelling and fighting ensued when Robert Toukmond decided to set the painting on fire but it was quickly extinguished, only a corner of it burnt. Needless to say, Gaiz Toa was not pleased.
- But Martyna Romero, again, had picked out a new location from the painting’s ranting, and set off to find the painting of his lost lady-love, Giselle, Star in tow.
- The painting, however, was gone, an odd note in its place. It took some brainstorming, but finally, the group figured out the meaning behind the obscure hints: It directed them to the Caretaker’s Office. But what would they find there?
- As soon as they managed to open the door, a black cat with blue eyes, identified as a Matagot stepped out and blocked the door.
- After being provoked by Gaiz the Matagot attacked the students.

Offended by the words shouted by the subject of the painting, and perhaps also slightly fueled by an earlier attempt from the girl who tried to pass the creature in order to get into the caretaker's office, the Matagot began to get aggressive and attack. Unfortunately for the Beauxbatons pupil who was carrying the painting, the Matagot attacked her rather than the guilty picture.
Gregorí, shocked and taken aback by the turn of the events, automatically tried to calm the beast who had just felt calm from his touch. She was not too far even after attacking the Beauxbatons student with her claws, and the Mexican forgot that in calming an angry feline, one should not get too close physically. Instead, he directly petted her neck - another way to show affection to felines, just like gently stroking their ears - something which he had just done earlier. "Bishito, bishito!" he called at the Matagot. "Lie down, michi, lie down!" His voice was soft but firm, strong and confident. (This time he did it right - felines needed to hear a firm, commanding voice. But was his attempt successful? That would be a different story.)
While still petting the Matagot's neck, Gregorí turned to the students, whom he assumed would be all panic by now. "Stay calm!" he called out to them, hoping to minimize the damage that could happen. "Don't provoke her further! Keep your voices down and no attacking or other offensive spells, please!"
He really did not know whether now would be a good time to sneak into the caretaker's office, or whether the Matagot's attention was still on guarding it. Either way, he really hoped no further damage would happen.

Elisabeth had returned the black-haired girl's (Callista) smile when suddenly things got out of control. Gregorí jumped into action, calming the Matagot by scratching her ears. So did the black-haired fellow Hufflepuff who had smiled at Elisabeth earlier.
Just as things started to get stable again, the man in the painting carried by a guest student offended the Matagot. The fantastic beast leapt and attacked, but somehow she did not attack the subject of the picture - who should have deserved it - but rather the foreign student who carried it.
Gregorí once again tried to advise the other kids, and Elisabeth looked at him with worries in her black eyes. He was attempting to calm the creature again, this time by petting its neck and giving it a command to lie down in a soft but firm tone. He was so near, terribly near, the angry Matagot; what if he got hurt in the process?
The part-Veela's attention snapped back to the whole situation; her brain was working to find a way to help.
The man in the picture. Thanks to Ayi*) Anna keeping cats at her home (and Elisabeth herself was a cat person), the eleven-year-old understood very well what had to be done first and foremost to calm an angry feline: whenever possible, get rid of the provocateur - in this case, the man in the picture.
Elisabeth looked at him in disgust. From what she had overheard tonight, that man had done nothing but screaming at everyone, accusing them of taking away another painting - his only concern. He clearly was being difficult and did not care even a bit for the students. He deserved to be got rid of, at least for tonight.
She approached the redhead (Scarlett), who looked like a friend of the wounded foreign student (Cassie). The Hufflepuff asked her politely, "Could you please take away the painting from here? We really need to separate an angry cat from its provocateur in order to calm it down. In the meantime, I'll help your friend; my parents have taught me first aid to stop a wound."
After that, gently she spoke to Cassie (whose name she had not learnt, though), "Sit down, and don't move your wounded leg. I'll help you stop it; got a handkerchief or something like that? It should help." If Cassie permitted, Elisabeth would perform Muggle's first aid technique to stop her bleeding by pressing the source of the wound; if a handkerchief or the like was available, she would also wrap it tightly around Cassie's wound.

The Fall Ball (The Hunt)
Percival looked at the large black cat that blocked the door. Raising his lip in a sneer as he studied the Matagot from afar. His dislike of the cats extending to the magical beast before him. The cat was hairless and it made the thing more taxing to look at. Its eyes were a steely blue and carried no pupil in its depths. The creature looked devoid of life, and it unsettled him greatly. He wondered if the thing could even see or if it was as blind as a bat.
The boy found himself wanting to grip harder on to Opeila's hand. He was sure she was quite used to dealing with wayward cats. Percival turned slightly towards his date wanting to speak to her. Though it appeared he would not get a chance to. Opeila ripped her hand out of his grasp with such severity that it left him speechless. His eyes widened as his brows furrowed together in confusion. The boy's lips parted in a slight 'oh' as he whirled around to watch after Opeila's retreating form. Percival's throat tightened as he quickly took to parting the crowd after her. "Opeila!" he called after her. The boy rudely pushed past random people. Unable to focus on anything other than Opeila's disappearing form. So caught up in trying not to lose her he didn't pay any heed to the girl he had elbowed harshly to get by. Percival lost sight of Opeila's red hair before picking it back up again. Though, Percival found he continued to lose sight of Opeila over and over again. With each instance, he found he lost sight of her for longer and longer.
Percival felt his heart race as he glanced around wildly. The crowd thinned out, but he couldn't see her anymore. The boy could hear each thump of his heart as he scanned the corridor. Though it would be all for naught, Opeila was nowhere in sight. Percival wondered what he had done wrong to cause her to leave him so suddenly. Had they not promised to stick together after losing one another the first time. Lost in thought, Percival didn't notice he was standing in the corridor like a child who had lost their mother at the train station. The feeling of abandonment and humiliation squeezed his chest tightly together. Gritting his teeth, the boy continued away from the crowd of students. He needed to try and find Opeila. Whether that was to confront her or to make sure she was okay he wasn't too sure. The rest of his evening would yield nothing. Percival would not be able to find his runaway date. Eventually giving up to go back to his dorm. Disappointment and unwelcomed hurt weighing him down as he did.

A lot was going on - spells flew, Matagots hissed, people bowed and some just exited the area to get a good night's sleep and rest easy as their fellow classmates attempted to tackle a brewing magical mystery. Annoyingly, Scarlett and Cassie's joint efforts weren't enough to convince Toa (as Cassie had implied - no first name basis's anymore) even when he had been almost polite to them before. Some people just couldn't make up their minds it seemed. And Toa seemed to be angry mostly at her! The nerve of it all.
"We won't!" said Scarlett, in response to the portrait. "Not until you - wait, what?"
Toa had let something slip yet again. The creature who had taken Giselle...it might not have been a genuine proclamation, but any statement was worth a shot. Scarlett turned to Cassie in newfound excitement. "Did you hear that Cassie? Something about how the Matagot might've been the one to take Giselle?"
She then rounded back to Toa, rolling her eyes as she frowned at the portrait. "You don't seem to be very good at keeping secrets, do you? But I suppose that's a good thing."
And then it happened. Scarlett didn't know why but somehow, the Matagot seemed to be annoyed by Toa's choice of words, or something to do with him...that only elevated Scarlett's point about the guy - perhaps Toa was telling the truth, perhaps the Matagot was attacking out of annoyance from Toa's slip! Maybe the Matagot was even part of the plan-
But then the Matagot attacked Cassie, scraping her legs. She made a dodging move but couldn't, and the Matagot caught her and drew blood. It looked like it must've hurt, and however strong and invincible Cassie-Heather McGregor-Martin was, gashes of blood always hurt. Fury overwhelmed her. No one hurt her best friend like that and walked off without a scratch. Ignoring the foreign boy shouting to not cast any offensive spells (haha, as if), ignoring the Asian girl telling her to move Toa away, Scarlett whirled to the Matagot as blood rushed to her head, her heart pounding as her temper rose quickly, like fire bursting out of a volcano. No one hurted her best friend, no one - no one -
"Well you little shite," snarled Scarlett. "See you in hell."

The Fall Ball (The Hunt)

Interaction(s): @Callista Lovis, @Scarlett Aden
Interaction status: OPEN
Action(s): flung herself against Scarlett (if successful: at best may result in grabbing her wand or hand away, OR both girls might go down together onto the floor - depends on the mods), urgently requesting Callista to move the picture as far as possible right away
Other mention(s): @Ginevra Tsuchiya/Gregorí Erkens, @Lucia Fox/Cassie Heather McGregor-Martin
"NO!"
Whether or not the foreign student (Cassie) let her treated her wound, Elisabeth had now forgot about it. The redhead who had always accompanied this Beauxbatons pupil (Scarlett) had stupidly tried to provoke the Matagot by attacking it with an attempted Flipendo.
It did not matter what the Gryffindor's reason was; the only thing that mattered now was that it was not the smartest move - or if you dare to put it bluntly, it was estúpido. *)
What if the spell hit Gregorí instead? He was terribly close to the magical creature as he attempted to calm her down; a misfired spell could easily hit him.
What if, regardless whether the Flipendo hit the poor Matagot or not, it angered her?
Or worse, what if the sneaky spell hit Gregorí and made the fantastic beast lose her temper even more? Now that would be the worst output of all...
The Hufflepuff sprang - quick as a panther, or as any other feline creature. Had she learnt the spell Expelliarmus before, she would use it to disarm the Gryffindor right away; however, because she had not learn it yet, she now attempted to manually swiftly dash against the older student. It might be rather difficult to simply disarm her, but perhaps the first-year could move her wand-arm so that the Flipendo hit an empty wall instead - or she could flung herself against the second-year so they both went down to the floor. That might hurt, but at least still better than facing an angry Matagot.
Regardless the outcome of her reflex action, Elisabeth would call out to the sensible fellow Hufflepuff (Callista), "Hi, you in white cardigan! (I'm so sorry I still don't know your name, Miss!) Please, move that painting away ASAP! As far away from the Matagot! To another location, another corridor! Anywhere!"

The Fall Ball (The Hunt)
the fourth location.
Ami groaned in frustration as her warning for the students to shield their eyes was apparently for naught, as her wand only sparked rather than dispelling the big ball of beautiful brilliance that she had originally wanted. Plus, even worse, that stupid cat had gone and clawed someone. Crap. She winced as she realized that the cat had drawn blood from the girl's leg, before even more started to happen.
There was that kid who was still preaching about keeping calm, and Ami was tempted to punch him in the mouth to get him to shut up. Clearly, there was no staying calm now... but she restrained, remembering when she'd punched Mars not that long ago. Had that solved anything? No, of course not... so it probably wouldn't help now. The redhead she'd noticed earlier getting all fiesty with Ana seemed to want to fight the cat, but then someone else lunged at her as well. Pursing her lips as she glanced around, she realized... the cat had gone and attacked a student, and therefore, left its post. Maybe the other girl from before had the right idea... what was in the Caretaker's Office? After all, that cat certainly wouldn't be hanging around if nothing interesting was happening, so it must have been attracted by something or was maybe even guarding something.
With her wand at the ready (although she was quickly losing faith in its ability to function), Ami would attempt to dart into the Caretaker's Office, and if she was successful, would attempt to cast Lumos Maxima once more. A second try couldn't hurt, right?
Action: Attempt to sneak into the Caretaker's Office; if successful, attempting to cast Lumos Maxima again.

The Fall Ball (The Hunt)
The cat hissed and Piper jumped back. She was suddenly very aware of how tall the matagot was. One girl bowed to it, in an attempt to keep the peace, but the cat continued staring into Piper's eyes, seeming to stare right through her. Unsettled, she didn't break eye contact but said nothing. She felt so stupid, but there was no time for such emotion right now. There was a mystery to crack. Suddenly, some idiot girl came running with Gaiz Toa. The cat had calmed by the boy's stroking (he was still telling everyone to remain calm), but the sight of Toa for some reason enraged the cat. It leaped and attacked the girl holding the painting, gashing her legs. Piper let out a curse that was likely very inappropriate for a first-year student. There would be no non-provocation anymore. People might get hurt.
Following this, a blur of actions occurred, namely one girl trying to cast Flipendo on the Matagot and the other trying to tackle the caster, telling her to get Toa out. Piper wholeheartedly agreed with the second girl. Meanwhile, another girl, who looked like she was in a much higher year, continued Piper's attempt to try and dart past the Matagot. Piper saw through her line of thinking. Perhaps if the cat was distracted by the other people, it wouldn't notice someone else attempting to sneak through.
At this point, Piper was dying of curiosity. What could possibly be inside the office? However, seeing the cat so quick to attack and the damage it could do was unsettling. She didn't even have shoes! The conflict was almost too much. But Piper couldn't back down. Not when she was so close. Even if she was crazy, the opportunity was too much to pass up. All Piper could do was create more confusion. She took the other side of the Matagot and attempted to race through into the office with the other girl, slightly behind her. Even if the Matagot did notice, maybe it wouldn't know which of them to stop.
