The Fall Ball (The Hunt)

Interaction(s): @Ginevra Tsuchiya/Gregorí Erkens, @Callista Lovis, @Anastasia Beckett, @Scarlett Aden, and everyone else at the fourth location
Interaction status: OPEN
Action(s): knocking at the caretaker's office's door, being certain about the last missing spell
Other mention(s): @Kit Paine
Star, who had been trailing behind the group of students, just suddenly went inside the caretaker's office through the closed door - easily, as she was a ghost! The students, on the other hand, naturally could not do the same.
Elisabeth stopped and hesitated. She had predicted such thing would happen, and to be honest, she considered this as among one of her "negative" predictions. Of course there were worse things that could take place, but the Belizean had hoped they would not need to enter the room.
If Mr Paine, the Hogwarts caretaker, was in, how would they explain things to him? That they were trying to protect the school based on a warning given by a ghost whose name they did not even know and whom could not be called to prove they were telling the truth? Or that they were playing a Halloween game organised by the committee of the Fall Ball? How would the man react?
If he was not in, what should they do? Simply barge in (with or without Alohomora) and observe (or worse, search among) his stuff without permission? It would be a huge violation to his privacy...
Elisabeth turned to the group of students who were with her in front of Mr Paine's office. By the look of some of their faces, the Hispanic-Asian girl was pretty sure a number of them would not hesitate to do the barging in and stuff observing possibility she had in mind. However, gathering her courage, the eleven-year-old decided to speak up and hopefully gave them some sense.
"Look," she said to everyone. "I know we all want to follow Star right away - but please, consider if we're in Mr Paine's position. I don't think any of us would like it if someone enters our office without our personal permission and then start observing our stuff. Let's at least try knocking first to check if he's in, shall we?"
At the end of her speech, Elisabeth would knock at the door of the office, hoping - really hoping - that Mr Paine was inside. The idea of explaining things to him at least sounded better than violating his privacy, for her.
While waiting for an answer, the girl turned to Ilvermony's Gregorí, who at this point had become some kind of her partner in crime investigation (at least she was closer to him than to anyone else at this corridor, come on!). "¿Crees que puedes ayudarme a memorizar la respuesta al acertijo?" *) she asked him.
It might come in handy, although she hoped they would not have to cast any of those spells tonight.
And then, to help refresh his memory - and hers as well, "Crucio. Alohomora. Tarantallegra. Flipendo or the Knockback Jinx. Obscuro. Ferula." And finally, "Expecto Patronum."

Evidently, Ana wasn't the only one who had figured out the riddle, although she was certain her spell casting had been what had lead to everyone else doing so. After all, where would the world be without Anastasia to make things happen? The ever-dwindling group was on their way and arrived at the caretaker's office. The glowing cat seemed to follow them, which struck Ana as odd. Did it know something they didn't? Was this, as Ana had previously considered, all an elaborate trap?THIRD LOCATIONAna glanced about to see who remained of the crowd that had left the ballroom. There was a boy she didn't recognize (Gregori), likely a foreign student, as well as girls she at least vaguely recognized. One of them (Callista), she recognized as a first-year and nothing more. Elisabeth was a member of On Pointe if she remembered correctly, and Ana struggled to produce a name for the vaguely familiar face. One person, she didn't struggle to name. Scarlett Aden. Ana glared at her venomously for a moment. Her blood seemed to boil at the sight of the redhead and she struggled to focus on the task at hand. If things came to spell casting, perhaps one of Ana's would go astray and hit Scarlett by "accident". For now, Ana would have to comfort herself with that, as there were more consequential things to focus on.FOURTH LOCATION
Elisabeth's words earned an unimpressed eyebrow arch from Ana. If the caretaker's office was able to be opened by school children, then how was that any fault of theirs? As the other girl knocked, Ana flicked her wand sharply. "Alohomora!" she said firmly. A joke she'd heard her father tell once came to mind. Something about how when confronted with a door, a Hufflepuff would knock, a Slytherin would use magic to open it, a Gryffindor would attempt to kick it down, and a Ravenclaw would point out it was unlocked. Had Ana not been in heels and a ballgown, she would have given kicking the door in some serious consideration. "Unless anyone's intending to tamper with his belongings, which I personally am not, what's the harm in taking a look? After all, if that ghostly fellow's to be believed, the fate of the school could be at stake."
Whether or not her words convinced anyone, she would then attempt to open the door. Because, being a Pureblood, she had never seen a horror movie...

After the revelation where Scarlett had realised that she hadn't realised that Henry and Lucia had both left their wild-goose chase across the school in an attempt to solve mysteries. Now there seemed to be considerably less people at the caretaker's office, which was odd. Had they all just gone, left, exited along the way? Scarlett couldn't imagine the thought. When she started a job, especially an exciting detective adventure, she had to finish. And she would.
The group raced to the caretaker's office and Scarlett whispered a silent prayer to anyone that Mr. Paine would be there. Cassie had stayed with Gaiz, but Scarlett knew the French-English girl would be joining them soon. It was in her whole belief, her attitude. Cassie always wounded up in the centre of adventure. Scarlett looked around at her remaining companions. An Asian, a boy and Anastasia Beckett. Scarlett only knew Beckett of the group, and the older girl wasn't even someone she liked. Typical. Well, she wouldn't show her annoyance, staying firmly silent and ignoring Anastasia.
They arrived at the office and the Asian girl was talking about spells, like Cassie had. From what Scarlett could gather, in the riddle, each letter had stood for a spell, and they added up to this location. But that was irrelevant now. Perhaps they had left the story of Gaiz and Giselle to move on to something deeper, perhaps they hadn't.
The door was closed, and locked, Scarlett assumed. She gave it a little kick before turning to Anastasia, who was in the process of casting her spell and attempting to open the door. "Have you never seen a horror movie?" asked Scarlett snarkily. "The person who enters a dark room first always dies. Or at least gets moderately maimed. I'm hoping that will happen to you, to be honest."────── ☆ ───────Action Kick the door

INTERLUDE II
FOURTH LOCATION
At the door to Mr Paine’s office, opinions on how to proceed differed. @Elisabeth Erner had found an explanation for the last line of the riddle - horror was likely referring to Dementors, and the spell to protect yourself from them? Expecto Patronum.
She was also a generally polite girl, and worried about disturbing the poor caretaker by storming into his office. Common sense to knock first, right?
Neither @Scarlett Aden nor @Anastasia Beckett had that kind of patience, however. A gentle kick, some snark, and Anastasia did what any curious wix following on the trail of a dark mystery would do, and simply decided to charm the door open - with her wand, not her beauty, of course.A little distracted, maybe by Scarlett’s odd Muggle references, she almost missed the door, but the spell still connected. Barely.Anastasia casts Alohomora (DC 8 )

When the door opened, one could briefly see that the office was dark. No one seemed to be there, only the light glow of the cat could be seen. Before anyone could enter the office, knowledge of horror movies or no, something came out. A huge black cat with glowing blue eyes and pointed ears crept into the hallway and blocked the way into the office.
The fur on the back of the neck was bristled. Elegantly, she settled on her hind legs and draped her tail around her clawed paws. Her piercing blue eyes were fixed on the students in front of her.
She didn’t do anything - for now - only watching, observing… guarding?

The oldest student in the group impatiently casted Alohomora at the caretaker's office's door, making a remark about how it would not be a wrong thing to do because that meant the Hogwarts staff were not careful enough that they installed a security system which could easily be hacked by students. She clearly had no sense of privacy, or so Gregorí considered. He also considered her being rude to sweet Elisabeth - the gentlest person he had ever known perhaps - and the Horned Serpent felt an instant dislike against this bossy-boots. However, he was not a fan of conflicts, so the thirteen-year-old made no comment whatsoever.
And then there was a red-haired girl who seemed to be in a not-so-good term with the oldest student. She gave the door a kick, and even though Gregorí did not dislike her (he did not even know her either way), he thought her action deserved a facepalm just as much as Anastasia's did.
The door did crack open, but Gregorí was not sure whether it was because a successful spell cast or because of the slight kick. But before any of the kids could enter, a huge black cat with blue eyes came out. It seemed to guard the caretaker's office - maybe it always did generally, or maybe there was something special today that needed its attentive guard.
"A Matagot?" the Mexican boy wondered, rather loud it turned out although he did not mean to do so. Gregorí had never seen a Matagot before, but this creature standing in front of him matched the description of the beast as he had read before - huge, black fur, blue eyes, and seemingly used for security.
Normally not a leader, this time the boy warned the other students around him, "Stay calm! I think it's a Matagot - the creature's normally harmless, but it can be very ferocious if provoked, including if you hit it with any offensive spell - Stupefy for example. Try a gentle approach!"
He currently had no idea about any approach which may be considered gentle, so he just stood firmly as he considered what to do. At the same time, though, his left hand reached into his pocket, ready to pull out and use his wand in case anything went wrong - whether or not it was induced by a reckless rough approach by a student who did not listen to his advice.

The letters spelled CARETAKERS OFFICE, as a few students pointed out (the room had steadily filled). Piper felt a burning sense of disappointment. She had been wrong, and was a failure. However, she refused to wallow just yet. One girl sprinted towards the caretaker's office, followed by several others. The cat went off with them. Here we go! Piper took off along with them. By now, her bare feet were rather numb, but she pressed on. The stupid, stupid dress was also getting in the way, but Piper figured it wouldn't be too bad - and it wasn't. She simply couldn't move with the freedom she wanted.
When the cat reached the door, Piper skidded to a stop in front of the door. That horrible Anastasia was there, so she made sure to stay back in the shadows. Anastasia opened the door with magic (Piper thought it was quite unnecessary), revealing a creepy dark room, and out came the most horrifying cat Piper had ever seen. She had never liked cats much, and this confirmed her fears. This cat wasn't the elegant, sleek cat that had been guiding the group. No, this cat in particular was demonic. It was black, and its blue eyes glowed. "Freaky." Piper whispered. That cat couldn't be anything normal.
A boy in front of her mentioned taking a slow approach. He said it was some form of creature - a Matagot. And it would attack. The seriousness hit Piper all too quickly - this was no game. The professors wouldn't set the students up like this...right? The cat - no, Matagot - just sat there. Its glowing eyes pierced into Piper's, almost seeing straight through her. Challenging her, almost. Piper wondered - was the cat guarding the office? What could possibly be so important that someone would set a Matagot in front of a room? Or did the Matagot choose to be there of its own accord? Assuming it was a Matagot, of course.
Slowly, Piper advanced toward the cat. Her heart beat insanely fast inside her chest. She had to be crazy. This cat could attack and her enemy was watching. But her curiosity of what could possibly be in that room spurred her forward. Unconsciously keeping her hand near her wand (though she didn't know too many useful spells), she walked toward the demonic cat, attempting to get past. She never broke eye contact with it. What the bloody hell is wrong with me?

PerfectionistWhen the girl that had led them here [Elisabeth Erner] suggested they knock, Callista agreed. She had never been an impulsive child, no quite the opposite. Always cautious, quiet, and even now, when their informal "leaders" [Kara Capricorn and Henry Knight] were gone, she was reluctant to acquire the leadership role. Then again, she had never been one to rise from the ashes of others.
What interested her more was the girl's suggestion for line eight - the Patronus charm. It fit perfectly, and Callista flashed a smile in the girl's direction. However, it seemed that one of the older girls [Anastasia Beckett] was impatient and unlocked the door magically.
Another girl [Scarlett Aden] seemed to have some kind of quarrel with the older girl. Callista prayed that real life would not be like a horror movie. Not that she had seen many of them.
As the door swung open slowly, Callista couldn't hold back a small gasp. It looked like a black Sphinx cat. An outrageous thought slid through her mind. I wonder if it'll give us another riddle. That thought was quickly shaken away. Besides, one of the foreign boys [Gregorí Erkens] informed them that it was a Matagot.
A Matagot? I've never heard of them. Try as she might, she couldn't remember ever having read or learned about a Matagot. Maybe it was native to the boy's country. As Callista tried to think of a way to get past it, movement in her peripheral vision caught her eye. A girl about her age [Piper Clark] was attempting to sneak past the creature.
She tensed. The foreign boy [Gregorí Erkens] had said it was normally harmless. Does attempting to sneak past it count as provoking it? For the sake of the girl, Callista hoped not. Instead, her legs moved forward, almost without her mental consent.
Maintaining eye contact, she tried not to blink. Sinking into a bow at her waist, she found her gaze directed at the creature's feet. Callista also realized that her wand arm was very close to the pocket where her wand was stowed - although what good it would do, she wasn't sure.
Best case scenario - she earns the Matagot's respect, also distracting it from the girl in the process. Worst case scenario... let's not go there.
Holding her breath, she stilled her body.

Scarlett said that she was going to go to the caretaker's office and Cassie nodded. "Okay... I'll come in a mo," she said. She still wanted to figure out this riddle - she was never one for leaving a job half-done, but she made sure that she looked after Scarlett as the redhead left, to make sure that Cassie herself would know the way.
So... some random girl Cassie'd never met before was calling her a genius. The muggleborn gave a little shrug. "Uh, thanks," she said, bemused. "I do try. So, what did I do again?"
The girl explained her reasoning, finishing it off with a word in a language which Cassie didn't recognise.
"Ooohh," Cassie breathed. "But, wait-" she frowned. "Why'd the Flipendo one go the other way round to all the others? And-" but the girl had left.
Cassie asked Gaiz and the girl whose painting it was her question, and Gaiz's answer took her by surprise. Her eyes widened. "Oh my goodness," she breathed at the information Gaiz had let slip. Whether it was important or not, Cassie certainly thought so. "Oh. My. Goodness. You mean there's a plan?! And you're part of it?! Is it something to do with the ghost? Is it-" The questions were spurting out of her mouth faster than they ever had before, and she suddenly cried, "No! Wait!" and held a hand up in the air. "You, Sir, are going to explain everything to me an' Scar, or I'll set that painting of yours on fire and watch it burn." Threats made, Cassie picked the painting up again and made her way out from the corridor, following the way Scarlett had gone.
After retracting directions from a helpful portrait, Cassie managed to find the caretaker's office. A few people were there already, it seemed, and Cassie blinked at the sight awaiting her. A cat stood in the doorway, more straggly than Star, and a boy was saying something about gentle approaches. The girl from earlier was bowing to the cat - what did she thing she'd accomplish by that? - and someone was attempting to get past into the office. Huh. "Weird ghost cat. Again. Okay," she said, before grabbing Scarlett's arm and tugging it to get her attention. "Scar, guess what! Toa" - the muggleborn decided he didn't particularly deserve his first name here - "let slip some'tin', see, there's a plan, and he's part of I, goodness Scarlett, I think he has all the answers!" Her pitch rose slightly in excitement and she angled the painting so that both she and her friend could see and talk to its occupants. "Righ' then mister, you're gonna tell us everythin' you know and you're gonna start right now!"

Anastasia's spell connected, but only just. The door swung open to an eerily dark caretaker's office. How typical - on the night where ghosts ravaged the castle and students went on a wild chase across Hogwarts interrogating paintings and solving riddles the caretaker's office, another one of their locations now, just so happened to be empty and dark just like in one of those Muggle movies, the setting that truly set the atmosphere, where the creepy violin music heightened as the characters stepped in a mysterious room.
Scarlett crept inside with the rest of the group - a blonde, another Asian and a foreign boy. The rest of them would come in soon. The caretaker's office, Scarlett realised soon, was not empty. Sure, there were the students, but another ghost cat stood, bone-thin and movie-worthy. The other Asian seemed to be bowing to it, the blonde also approaching it and the foreign boy warning everyone that it was a Matagot, whatever that meant. Some sort of magical creature? Scarlett decided she would definitely be taking Care of Magical Creatures after this experience.
Just that moment, a hand grabbed her from behind. Scarlett was a bit twitchy and jumped a little, but when she saw who it was, she laughed, thankful to have Cassie there. She could handle scary stuff by herself but it was just so much more fun with a friend. "Cassie, what-" But Cassie was talking now, talking fast with Gaiz in her hands, but she called him Toa now. Had something changed? Something about a plan-

As she was running around the halls like a headless chicken, she nearly got stampeded by some of the other students who were on the hunt to get to the bottom of this whole conundrum. Eyes widened as she nearly ran face first into someone, she whirled around, glancing at the group with wide eyes. "I guess we're going this way, now," she muttered under her breath, trying to figure out who around her she recognized.
She made a quiet gagging noise as she saw @Anastasia Beckett's head of hair, even the mere thought of the girl leaving a bad taste in her mouth. Horrible, why did she have to be here, too? There was another redhead, and a couple of other students she didn't recognize... well, she'd make her presence known soon enough. For now, she simply tagged along with the group, shooting the strange cat a confused look, but keeping her mouth shut.
Finally, the group stopped in front of the Caretaker's door, and after a little bit of bickering between Ana and the redhead, Ana managed to get the door open with a bit of wandwork. Scarlett, ever the snarky little kid, managed to fire off something about horror movies, and Ami chuckled under her breath. Clearly, someone else here hated Ana as much as she did. However, the sudden appearance of the cat pushed away whatever commentary she was about to say, and Ami stared at it with wide eyes.
Some other kid (Gregorí) warned about being gentle, which another girl (Piper Clark) hardly seemed to take to heart. Ami would follow suit, elbowing past Ana with a curt, "Move, Bitch-ett."
But unlike Piper, Ami's goal certainly wasn't to get past the cat. Someone else was bowing to the cat (weird), but with her already considerably tall height, Ami peered past the cat into the Caretaker's office. "What the hell is Paine keeping in his office...?" she muttered under her breath. Her hand going to her wand, she glanced at the giant cat.
"Shield your eyes," she called out to everyone in the nearby vicinity, "This may be bright." Taking a deep breath and shielding her eyes with her non-dominant hand, in case the spell ended up being a lot bright than she wanted it to be, Ami muttered, "Lumos Maxima!"
Action: Casting Lumos Maxima; if successful, attempting to send the ball of light created into the center of the Caretaker's Office. Ami is also shielding her eyes with her hand.
