Last year, the car ride to the Hogwarts Express had been silent and cold.

This year, Naomi had decided to come along.

"I'm telling you, I've done my calculations! I should be able to fit into this suitcase which I conveniently accidentally brought with me!"

"Well, did you check for how much you could stay in there before it becomes uncomfortable and you have to beg me to let you out except I can't because a student decided to ride in my compartment?"

"I did. And the chances are extremely low, considering you're both unlikable and unapproachable."

"Damn me for teaching you to always prepare for all possible outcomes."

Naomi only grinned at that.

Autumn also smiled, and turned her face away from her sister's to the back of her mother's head. Her mother hadn't said anything much during the car ride.

She hadn't said anything much over the holidays.

She used to be so happy, so joyful, so... loving. Then, after his death, she had been so quiet. She had refused to even look at Autumn, much less talk to her. Then she had been angry and loud, and she had yelled and she had screamed and she had insulted. Then, once again; silence.

Some days, Autumn would appreciate that. After all, she didn't have to face any problems or tension she had with her mother if none of it was brought up, and they could avoid the issue altogether.

On other days, it would drive her insane. She would wish her mother yelled more, because Autumn knew she wanted to. She would wish her mother was less passive with her anger, so the stupid tension would stop constantly building and they could talk their mess out like mature adults!

Except neither of them were mature adults. Autumn was not an adult, and her mother was not mature. A mature person would not do this, would not place all this anger and disappointment and hatred onto a child.

A mature person would deal with their grief accordingly, they would go seek professional help maybe, maybe they would get over it themselves, and stop their stubborn anger at a dead man. And no matter how much she denied it, Autumn knew her mother was still mad at her dad. She had been there that night. 6 years ago, she had been there, behind a locked door, hearing their fight. They didn't know she knew. They thought she'd be surprised when her father died 3 weeks and 2 days later. She wasn't. With that fight, she learnt many things. But two of these things always stuck by her.

1. Nobody knew what they were doing, not even adults. Especially not adults.
2. Listening was the key.

She thought about that for a while. It seemed that she had been zoned out, because she did not her Naomi calling her name for a while.

"Autumn. Autumn. Autumn! Autumn Artemia Ivy!"

Autumn jumped out of her thoughts and back into the car and within her surroundings in what seemed to be less than a second.

"MutatioSkullusisadarkcharmwhichcausesthesubjecttogrowmultipleheadsandisnotableforitsuseinAncientEgypt!"

"Chill down. Have you stayed up all night studying again? Come on, it was the last night of the holidays; why would you do that to yourself?"

"Oh, look! We're here! We're here and I can leave and not answer that question because I don't know either!"

"Mum, are we there?"

Mum. Autumn flinched at the word.

Amina was Autumn's mother. Amina was Autumn's primary caregiver. But Amina was not Autumn's mum. She hadn't been Autumn's mum in years.

A mum cared for their child, protected their child. A mum did not feel ashamed for their child's mistakes; a mum corrected them and told their child that they did well anyway.

But Autumn supposed her mother was Naomi's mum. She wasn't the same person to the both of them.

After a hesitant pause, her mother spoke.

"Almost, my lily. Only 5 more minutes."

My lily. Good grief, this was getting worse for Autumn by the second.

The next 5 minutes was spent with some more bickering between the two siblings. Soon, the car trip was pulled to a halt due to reaching their destination.

Neither Autumn, nor Naomi, were hug people. This fact was ignored for a moment, and Autumn felt so welcome in her sister's arms. They would always be together, no matter how far apart. It didn't matter if Naomi couldn't come with her to school; she had already shown her first sign of magic, so she clearly was not a squib, and they lived in the United Kingdom, so logically she would join Autumn at her school next year.

Autumn smiled, and for the first time in what seemed like forever, she looked and felt both calm and peaceful. Then she realised that she still had to leave the car, and her sister with it.

She sighed and unlocked the door, releasing their hug. Going to the back trunk, she took out her bags and went back to the passenger section. She looked at Naomi one last time before turning away to the station and walking away.

"I love you," she said, "be safe."

Naomi rolled her eyes that. "You're so cheesy."

But she smiled too, and Autumn noticed a tear forming at the edge of her right eye.

And that was it. Autumn walked through the gates into the station as she heard the car engine start up again, and the car leave. She inhaled and exhaled, and walked over to Platforms 9 and 10. She saw what seemed to be muggle-raised first years trying to understand where in hell the platform was. She remembered her own first train ride, a chaotic questioning of who had thought it was a good idea to make first years run into a solid barrier. She remembered how she had seen it as a stupid idea, something silly out of Wonderland. Then she had thought about sort of as a test of trust, to see how much the new students' were letting themselves believe. She certainly had not believed much. She didn't regret it.

She clapped at the new students.

"Anybody looking for Platform 9 3/4?"

This got her a few strange glances and glares from confused muggles, but some eager nods from the children which she had presumed to be the first years.

"Here."

She ran backwards, concentrated on a point in the wall, and pulling her bags in with her, she ran through the barrier to where the train was. She patiently waited for the other children to arrive, and they did, one by one.

She smiled to herself, trying to sort them into houses in her head. The one who had looked at her like she was insane and had tried to put her hand through before she fully went through? Ravenclaw. The one who smiled as if she had dared him to walk into a wall and had not hesitated before running face-first in? Clear Gryffindor. The one who had seen the hesitance in the students faces and helped them get through, because she had done this before?

Hufflepuff.

She rolled her eyes. Naomi had been right; she was being so cheesy today. She could not afford to go soft.

She entered the train, looking for an empty compartment where she could read the new muggle historical thriller book she had bought. And Naomi had been right; she had been up studying all night. So that gave her another to options; take a nap to catch up on all the sleep she had missed the night prior, or study and revise so that her job was fully finished.

She finally found an empty compartment, and seated herself, feeling comfortable. Bringing out her book, she began to read the first few words, only to be interrupted by someone opening the door to her compartment.

She guessed Naomi had been inaccurate in her predictions after all.

Krystal didn't know it was possible to feel this many things at once. She was terrified and excited and nervous and a million other things all at the same time. Above of all, she was itching to get to Hogwarts and get away from her parents. Not that they were a bad thing, she just wanted the freedom that came without them. For the whole car ride to the station Krystal had been squirming in her seat.

When the car finally slowed to a stop, Krystal jumped out. "C'mon, let's go! Hurry up, you guys are so slow!" Krystal opened the passenger door and all but dragged her mother out of the car.

"Someone's excited," her dad muttered. He stepped out of the car and went to grab Krystal's belongings for her. Krystal was standing next to him in seconds, hauling out everything and carrying it to the entrance of the train station.

"You've only got five minutes, let's hurry." Her mum grabbed her hand and led her towards the brick wall between platforms nine and ten. Krystal rolled her eyes. They were the ones dawdling, not her.

They reached the wall and briskly walked through it. The other side was a bustling station. People of all ages swarmed around the train like ants. People laughing, people waving, people crying. It was a flurry of activity that Krystal and her parents were swept into.

"Quick! Get on!" her dad ordered, "You don't want to miss is!"

"I won't miss it. I still have a few minutes." She resisted the urge to roll her eyes again. They got so anxious when they didn't have five minutes to spare.

Her mum said, "Bye honey! We'll see you soon, okay? Send an owl tomorrow. Now get onto the train."

"Okay, mum. Bye!" She waved to her parents one last time before she stepped onto the train and they were swept away in the crowd.

The train was quieter, but not by much. The open windows let in the noise from the platform and people laughed in the compartments, but it was quieter. Krystal walked down the train, trying to find a mostly empty compartment. She found one, close to the back of the train, with only one person. It was a girl, no older than her second year, with a book open on her lap. Krystal opened the door.

"Anyone sitting here?" she asked.

"Anyone sitting here?"

Autumn was both delighted and displeased.

Delighted because Naomi had miscalculated.

Displeased because ugh, humans.

She knew what she wanted to say; "yes, leave."

She also knew what she did end up saying.

"No."

"Unsurprisingly,"
she added under her breath.

Once the burden of speech was over, she did something she was much more comfortable doing; analysing and observing.

Her words had been generic, and Autumn could find nothing from them. Her appearance, though.

Brown eyes. They represented independence, security and stability, yet nothing about the way the girl positioned herself could follow up on the claim. Thick hair. That represented strong willpower. Nothing about the way the girl stood or her tone suggested anything for or against the claim. Oval face. Comforting.

Still, those were symbolisations, no evidence or science to back them up. This girl could be interesting, or could be the worst person Autumn would ever meet in her life. However, it didn't really matter, since she had already not lied- an unlikely event, but one that had taken place nevertheless- and told the girl that nobody was sitting there, basically a clear invite to join her.

So, all she had at that moment was a hope that girl, whoever she was, was at least quiet.

It didn't take long for the girl to look up and answer her.

"No." she said. She also muttered something else, something that sounded a lot like, "Unsurprisingly." Krystal had a feeling it was because the girl had a very strong 'Don't Talk To Me' vibe.

Krystal sat down on the seat opposite the girl. Despite the unapproachable air the girl gave off, Krystal wanted to get to know her. As she had grown up in a muggle community, no one she knew was going to Hogwarts. Her muggle friends thought she was going to some boarding school. They didn't know it was a boarding school for people who could do magic.

Once Krystal was comfy, she looked at the girl, who hadn't gone back to reading her book. Instead, she was watching Krystal closely. Feeling slightly uncomfortable, Krystal turned and looked out the window. The train had started to move and was picking up speed as they left the station. The nervousness and excitement were back, fluttering around in her stomach like butterflies.

Finally, the girl looked back at her book. Krystal took this as her chance to study the girl more closely. She looked like a second year, but seemed much more mature. She was probably a Slytherin or a Ravenclaw. Krystal decided that this girl was her friend now. Or, would be her friend, eventually. So she said, "Hi, I'm Krystal. I'm a first year." She instantly regretted it. Her new friend did not seem like someone who wanted to be disturbed. She just had to hope this girl wasn't as hostile as she seemed.

Autumn scolded herself.

She loved observation and analysation, especially with strangers, but she should have accounted for the girl noticing her staring. She should have known not to look for too long. It had been impulsive of her. It had been uncharacteristic. Maybe it was the upcoming school year, or a lack of sleep, or the continuing feeling of missing her sister even though they had separated ways only minutes ago. But it was something, something that had made her help those students, something that had made her continue staring impulsively, something that made Autumn feel all odd, something. She did not know what, but she knew that she did not enjoy it.

As the girl began looking out of the window, looking slightly uncomfortable, Autumn pondered her next move, eventually deciding on joining the girl watch the train begin to move. It made her remember her first year, the mixed feelings of confusion, scepticism, caution and anxiety. But then she had arrived at the castle, and it had been beautiful. But then she had been made to sit in front of her entire school and be told by a talking object that she could not be part of the smart group because she did not love learning enough, and that her house would be her second family, as if she needed a second one of those.

But the first year's eyes were filled with two things Autumn had not had with her one she had first embarked on her magical journey; excitement and hope. Nervousness, too, surely, but she looked like she was being shown a whole new world, and that she could not wait to dive in. So, probably a muggleborn or muggle-raised halfblood. Maybe this girl would do better in Hogwarts than Autumn had. Any deity knew that the bar wasn't high.

And soon, she had turned back to look to her book. A page later, she felt the girl's gaze studying her. Keeping her eyes on her book, she wondered what the girl was thinking.

"Hi, I'm Krystal. I'm a first year."

Autumn paused. Small talk. Small talk lead to conversation, and conversation? Conversation was not part of the package. She could almost shudder at the thought of having to talk to the stranger for the rest of the train ride.

Aside from that, there was the name thing. Autumn did not know why, but she had never been keen on sharing her name. Or sharing any sort of information with anyone, really. She would say that she was quite reserved, and many of her public school teachers would agree. People did not need to know more about her than what was relevant to the situation. However, she had tried lying about her name before, and that had gotten her into the entire rumours situation, and staying silent would be rude. Usually Autumn would be fine with rude, but the girl had looked regretful as soon as she had spoke, and Autumn had a feeling she expected rude.

"Pleasure to meet you. My name is Autumn Artemia Ivy, and I'm in my second year. You seem excited for Hogwarts."

While the last sentence was a statement, it was toned more as a question.
