In October 2009 a 6 month old baby was adopted to a wonderful, loving couple through Buckinghamshire Council and the local social services. Dominique Trist and Rose Xanderthorn had met in 2001, while working together on a legal case to secure emergency accommodation for homeless people in Stirling and Perth, Scotland. Dominique was a barrister specialising her practise in human rights and equality law, while Rose worked directly with vulnerable homeless people as a social worker. They fell in love and lived together on the bank of Loch Earn, near the Scottish central belt. By 2006 the pair wanted to start a family and sought to adopt a new baby. Eventually, following three difficult years waiting for an opportunity, social services had identified a child in the English county of Buckinghamshire.

Dominique and Rose uprooted from their loch-side home and made the move to the small, picturesque village of Turville nestled in the Chiltern Hills where they would be closer to the foster carers who were looking after the new baby. In September 2009 they moved into a small, if beautiful, cottage on the outskirts of the village and, on the 30th October, Dominique and Rose were finally gifted a gorgeous new baby boy. The adoption agreed and formalised, the pair decided to immediately marry and begin their family life anew. In order to cement their new family, the pair wanted to take a new name through the wedding so that Ayla would grow up sharing their surname and heritage. And, once they named their new child (a name that would, never-the-less, change to Ayla when she turned 9, the family became the Trix's of Turville.

Ayla's early years were happy and full of love. She had the fortune to be a beautiful and gifted child, and her parents were thrilled. Ayla formed close bonds with animals and took a keen interest in people. She was an emotional child. While compassionate and empathetic, Ayla steadily grew more introverted and shy. While she seemed happy and comfortable in her own company, it did encourage dominique and Rose to persistently encourage her to make friends and reach out. All in all, the family home in Turville seemed a perfect setting for the family to live out their tale, at least until Ayla would go on to travel, or study elsewhere. But, it was not to be.

When Ayla was 8 she attended a small rural primary school with only a handful of other children and four teachers. It was a welcoming and fun school but one boy, Harris Trumpon, had made it his business to pick on Ayla for years - opting to make fun of the fact she didn't have a father. During a parents evening where the kids were demonstrating their writing ability on the board for all teachers and parents, Harris took the opportunity to pick on Ayla and made fun of her two mums. This angered Ayla. Her shyness would only allow her to sit and quietly rage at the nasty comments made by this annoying and small-minded boy. However, that rage unwittingly spilled out into the classroom and sought out Harris who was, by this point, writing his short paragraph on the board. Ayla was furious with him! She rumbled and muttered to herself at how unfair it was Harris was never told off for his behaviour. And, with that, Harris' trousers fell to his ankles and he tripped over. The room erupted in laughter at the sight of the boy's bright red face. Ayla could only chuckle to herself, amused by the unexpected slapstick. Her mother, Dominique, understood it wasn't self-inflicted hilarity, even if nobody else did.

Following this event, when Dominique approached her child to discuss what had happened, Ayla confided in her mum that she felt different. That nobody around her understood who she was. While this caused Dominique and Rose to worry that their family left Ayla longing for something else, their fears were soon alleviated, if not disrupted! Ayla came out to her parents and they - overjoyed and relieved - set about supporting her transition. This made the decision to leave Turville in search of new work easier. They changed Ayla's name and up-rooted the Trix's of Turville, moving to the London borough of Camden where their daughter was enrolled in a new school. It was here, in Camden, where Ayla would begin to excel. She seemed to have a great gift for academia and events always seemed to go her way. She seemed lucky! Two years after making the move to the maisonette by the Locke, Ayla would receive that most crucial letter and her journey to the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry would begin.



Ayla is a bold character. Despite being shy and, sometimes painfully, introverted, she is passionate about the wellbeing and experiences of other people. Ayla is emphatically empathetic and struggles to be cruel, even by accident. Her focus on understanding the needs of others mean that she often focuses on supporting those around her at the expense of her own wellbeing, and Ayla is the child who would give away her last pennies if it meant making someone else smile. As a result of the intense relationships she can form, Ayla is passionate and fiercely loyal. She cares deeply about equality and helping those who are vulnerable or marginalised. It is in this vein where, in stark contrast to her bashful nature, Ayla can become stubborn, hot-headed and recalcitrant. Where she believes someone is being wronged or harmed, Ayla's firebrand streak will leap out - often causing her to suffer the consequences.
