It seemed that Sylvain had decided to ignore Opeila's warning. Well, that was his choice, she wouldn't force him to do anything. Though Loras didn't look like he was about to attack the hand reaching out towards him- Rather almost confused. The smell coming from Sylvain's hand was something he didn't know, and soon he stepped closer. Careful and slow, prepared to jump back to the corner where he had left Flash's quill. Gently he pushed the hand with his nose, curious to find out what was inside it.
Flash said that Loras could keep the quill, seeming like he didn't care about it at all really. Opeila sent him a grateful smile. It would have been absolutely difficult to steal it back from Loras. Even more, Flash gave her a handkerchief, when she asked for a tissue. Was that silk? Opeila just held it for a moment, looking at it. There was no way she could just wrap it around the scratch on her hand, was there? It would ruin it.
Well, they lived in the wizarding world, there was surely a spell that could clean it, wasn't there? There had to be. Opeila wrapped the white fabric around her hand. "Thank you." Flash said that he visited Willow over summer. Against her will, Opeila felt a little stinger of jealousy at that. Or maybe not jealousy, that was the wrong word. She just wished she had similar events to tell about. It sounded like they all had great summers.
Willow told her about her mother having opened an online store. "That sounds fun! What is she selling?"
And there was the Lady Margary question that Opeila had dreaded. What was she going to tell them? There was already a Oh, she's doing good. Same strict Lady Margary on the tip of her tongue, when she changed her mind. Her dad had once told her something about lying believably. Don't exaggerate. Only change the details you need to keep to yourself, everything else keep true. Opeila bit her lip. "She died." The words seemed to hang in the air like a bad smell, echoing from the walls of the compartment.
Saying it out loud made it feel even more real. "Unexpectedly over summer. Fell asleep and didn't wake up again." Opeila swallowed at the memory. One moment she had excitedly told her grandmother about her friends at Hogwarts, the next she desperately tried to wake her up. The thought tightened her throat. She stared out of the window, trying to keep it together. Opeila had spent the last weeks of her holidays in an emotional hole, now it was time to get out and stay out.

There were several reasons to get off the floor at this point. Opeila had warned him about being scratched, Flash had reinforced it the way one of his mum's would have, and Willow directly told him to leave Loras alone, in more words than that. Reluctantly, Sylvain withdrew his outstretched hand, the one holding the catnip, before he broke the treat in two and left some behind for the quill-thief. At least Loras could have some fun without him that way. Syl dusted his pants off and chose a seat next to Willow.
When Flash asked Sylvain if he planned on getting a pet the excitement visibly swelled behind his eyes and audibly within his throat. "I'm thinking about getting a pet, but I'm not sure exactly what I want yet." There were plenty of options to pick from. Boy he knew that much. His reluctance to pick was due to a dilemma of riches. The question was, not will he get a pet but which pet will he get? The even bigger dilemma was to figure out how he was going to convince his mothers to let him keep a pet. Though, on second thought they might not even notice.
Sylvain had wanted to go to Willow's house over the summer. He would've been lying if he said he wasn't at least a little bit jealous when he first heard Flash reminisce, but then he'd chosen to spend the summer with Aida, Alexander, Dealla and Ileen, so it was hardly fair to be jealous of his own choices. Syl thought back on how exciting it all was. From googling how to take the ferry from Inverie to Mallaig, then appropriating some of his allowance to purchase railway tickets, in secret, from Mallaig to the designated rendezvous point in Inverness. From there they took a beat up and rusted out van to a pasture by Fort Augustus. From the For they took horses to the hideout. A cave, but not just any cave. Aida's secret cave.
He began thinking best how to tell his friends the events of his summer, really just that one adventure, when Opeila spoke about death. In an instant, his summer seemed unjust by comparison. Fun and adventurous. His excitement and boredom being the most worrying part. The rest he'd spent cooped up reading books, but Opeila... She had actually lost someone, and from the sound of it, someone near and dear to her. Sylvain couldn't think of what to say, so he just continued to look at her with concern. Only when she finished and looked out the window did he think to try and change the topic.
"My condolences Opeila." He had heard adults say that to grieving people and though it hardly seemed like enough to him, his thoughts and sentiment were all he could lend to make her grief even a little bit more bearable. "My summer was pretty boring for the most part. I read a lot, and only really left the house for a few days. It was fun." Though if he told them all of his thoughts, sharing what he'd learned over the summer, then he would have to admit to losing a bit of himself as well. The muggle world, which he had once found charming, had lost its magic in an incredibly unfortunate way. Loneliness. At least he could daydream of magic and going back to school to be with his friends while he waited for his dreams to come true.
His thoughts wandered as the candy trolley started down the aisle towards their booth. He was slowly losing focus on the conversation. He had a galleon to share with the four and they could get loads of candy for even a single galleon. "Anyone else want something from the trolley?" his voice taking an upbeat tone to try and cheer the four up. "It'll be my treat!"

With Opeila having dressed her minor wound, and Willow having nudged him embarassedly for his comment, Flash's smile was starting to feel more natural. She told him that her parents had liked having him over, and wanted to see him again, which brought back the feelings of nervousness he had in front of them, turning red with the thought. He had not only overdressed, but he also couldn't figure out what to call them or how to talk to him. They had been so open and kind towards him he wasn't exactly sure what to do with their affection. It was a bit overwhelming, somewhat confusing, but not at all bad. It was culture shock, still too young to know much about the world outside his secluded mansion. He would get used to it eventually.
"I'd like to see them again too." Flash said bashfully. "I hope Miss Owena's shop does well. I'm sure I could suggest it to some of my mother's friends if you gave me the link. Just text... well, try to remember to text me."
Flash laughed to cover his feelings of awkwardness. Even though all of them were close, the truth was they were all awkward preteens. Flash was usually good at navigating conversations when it had a goal. Simply talking about their summers... catching up... he wasn't sure what information was pertinent. What was right. He was at least glad that Sylvain gave up on his pursuit of the furry demon, his face lighting up when he talked about getting a pet of his own.
"Well, there's no rush of course." He assumed Sylvain would be able to decide when he was ready, especially given that he seemed so enthusiastic about it.
Then, as Willow asked about Lady Margary, the car got quiet when Opeila admitted that she died. The words thrummed an alarm through Flash's veins. The word-- died. For a second, he was brought back to that clearing in the forest, a dead body lying on the filthy ground. Cold, motionless. All color would drain from Flash's face, he suddenly felt light-headed. He couldn't even concentrate on what was actually being said-- that a relative of Opeila's died. Instead, his thoughts drew inward, dissociating completely.
It was only after the sounds from outside, and Syl mentioned the trolley that Flash suddenly snapped back. It reminded him of the chocolate that Miss Meenauh gave him after Miss Nico nearly scared him to death. It was supposed to help with shock.
"Y-yes, please. I would like some chocolate, actually. Thank you." Flash's voice would be distracted and slow. "Oh. Opeila, I'm sorry that happened."
As he slowly recalled the last few minutes, and connected them to what he knew about Opeila's family, it wasn't a good picture. Certainly her parents weren't helping her much through the grieving process. At the same time, he doubted she wanted to explain everything. He knew she worried about being a burden to her friends, changing the subject was likely a good idea.
"Did you want anything?" He tried to draw Opeila's attention back from the window she was staring out of.

Willow, who seemed to be at her brightest, became even brighter at the opportunity to talk about her mother's new business. "Oh she sells so much! Paintings, decorations for the house, salves, oils, all sorts! I'll make sure to owl you the... link? I'm sure she'd write it down for me for you to send to your family." She couldn't help but giggle at the thought of going back and forth with owls to get a link for an Etsy shop. It just seemed silly, but that was the world that she was submerged in now.
Her attention shifted with a small gasp when Sylvain mentioned getting a pet of his own. "Oh goodness, that's really exciting! Hopefully we can have play dates! Or maybe even a picnic with all of our pets, hm?" She looked over at Opeila with a smile, the thought of all of their pets getting together bringing her a special joy. Even if Flash would be a bummer without one, maybe in time she could convince him to get a matching cat. He could use a companion without fear of ulterior motives, although cats had those didn't they?
Then everything seemed to change after Willow asked an accidental bad question. Her face dropped, one of pure joy to a wilted flower that had been kept out of water for too long. "Oh- Opeila, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have asked, I-" The young badger found herself at a loss for words, despite being in the house of the finders. Willow gently leaned into Flash for support emotionally, feeling like she had been the one to mess up. Sylvain was there to help, offering candy. "Could I get some Bertie Bott's please?" The beans were sure to be a fun activity to bring the mood back around. Puckered faces and delighted squeals of luck. At least... that's what Willow hoped.

Opeila was thankful for Sylvain's words, more than she thought she would be. My condolences, words that sounded so formal, that it stopped Opeila from getting emotional. Was it weird that formality killed emotions for her? That had been the reason for her to choose the cool seat in front of Professor Jensen's desk instead of the more cozy one by the fire, when she gave her the choice. It helped her holding it together and so it did now. She sent the Ravenclaw a grateful little smile. "Thank you.", she managed to bring out in an almost normal, steady tone.
Sylvain started to tell them a little about his holidays when the trolley made its way past the compartments, providing the distraction that Opeila had hoped for. She didn't want to be the mood killer. The little girl had been particularly scared of Flash's reaction. He knew her story. He had seen her breaking down, he knew her worst fears. Opeila didn't want them to start the year that way. His voice when he ordered some chocolate and apologized to Opeila was different. "I'm fine.", she told him- it was not even a lie. This was fine, after the last terrible weeks. Now that she was with her friends and back on her way to the place that was closest to home, she was closer to fine than she had been for a good month.
At the same time she looked at her best friend for a few seconds, trying to figure out what this meant. Was this change only because of what she had said or was there more? He had seemed fine, but then, Flash always had a better emotional control than she did. "Oh, erm, sure, I'll have some sherbet lemons, please. Thank you.", she ordered when Flash asked her if she wanted anything.
And Willow apologized as well, seemingly feeling very bad for bringing the topic up. "Don't worry about it, Willow, you couldn't have known. I'm fine now, really.", she tried to cheer the Hufflepuff up again. "What do you think, will they allow balls again this year?", she made an attempt to change the topic again.

Exchanging currency for goods was simple enough. "Two sherbet lemons, some Bertie's Bott's and a chocolate bar please," he said politely as the trolley attendant stopped at their door. Sliding the panel shut once more, goods in hand, Sylvain passed the confections out to his friends. Sweetness tended to make bitter moments like these a bit more bearable, and if that didn't work, he'd probably end up hugging someone. Maybe everyone.
"I don't see why not," Sylvain said honestly with a bit of doubt in his voice. "Just because one ball went poorly doesn't mean they are all a bad idea." At least, it would have been closed-minded of him to think the school officials weren't more understanding of the sequence of events that had played out. Still, her question had some deeper meaning. Something had to have happened at the ball to make her question the validity of future balls. Something sensitive or secret.
But how to broach that topic? "Hey, I didn't go, but it sounded awful" wasn't quite right. Neither was "What was so bad about it that you think they won't?" Because despite the earnest answer it would elicit, a negative reaction was guaranteed. He sat, sucking on his half of the sherbet lemons, a sour face and perplexed disposition growing more and more interested in what exactly had happened. He'd been so upset that night because nobody had invited him. That he didn't go and knew better than to expect an invitation, now, was exactly why he wasn't interested in explaining why he hadn't gone in the first place.
Instead, the thought crossed his mind to ask a different question altogether. "What should happen if they don't?" He said as quickly as the idea struck him. "If they don't allow another ball I mean?" He fumbled over the words, the idea sensible but the translation nearly lost. "What do you think will happen if they don't allow another ball?" He said with a sigh, tired of tripping over his own words.

Flash shook his head quickly when Willow said she'd send it to his family. It was a more frantic action than would normally befall the ever-calm boy, which he made up for by quickly regaining his composure. "No, send it to me, not my family." He didn't really want to have to insist, but it would be worse if he didn't. If they sent it to his family, it would likely vanish into a pile of paperwork and never be seen again. They wouldn't treasure it like Flash would.
After they had each made their orders, all seeming to be on the same page as far as whether eating candy was a good next step for the conversation. Syl handed him the chocolate bar, "Thank you." which he opened right away, chipping the corner off and popping into his mouth. He had never really enjoyed sweets, but it felt like it was achieving its intended effect. That, along with Opeila continuing to talk about other things, had returned him to some kind of restored state. That sudden whiplash was unexpected, and a bit unnerving. Hopefully it wouldn't happen again.
She chose Hogwarts balls as a topic, which seemed like an odd choice, given how badly they had all gone. Sylvain seemed to try and fail to discuss the reality of what Hogwarts would be like without balls, but Flash actually already knew better. He just had to finish the chocolate in his mouth first.
"There will be more balls. Me and a few others students were already asked to pitch in for the upcoming fall ball. It was a kind of award for all the extra homework we did over summer." Did it sound like he was boasting? He was trying to explain how he knew, but he also knew none of them had received the same owl as he did. Getting good grades and being at the top of his class had never been an achievement to Flash, but more of a baseline expectation. "As much as extra responsibility can be seen as an award..."
Not wanting to leave it on a diminishing note, knowing he was surrounded by people who didn't like when he put himself down, he added, "I'll be sure to tell them not to put any danger in." Then, a small, cheeky smile.

Willow excitedly took the candy in her hand from Sylvain, "Thanks Sylvain!" The opening of boxes and crinkling of candy packages awoke the previously sleepy Buttons as he made his way back into Willow's lap. She playfully batted at him as he tried to get ahold of the box she had. She was half listening to the conversation about balls, caught up in how cute her little boy was. The idea of another ball exhausted Willow, she would go if Flash was involved in planning it. She trusted him to keep the student body's best interest in mind. "Despite all the danger they've caused to us, I think the student's would riot if balls were banned forever and always." She looked over to Flash with a small smile, "If there's anyone I trust to plan a ball, it would be you Flash."
She tried to pull away from Buttons for a moment to pop one of the sickly green jelly beans in her mouth, which was a mistake as her nose quickly puckered up in disgust. "Puke flavor! First one!" She shuddered as she swallowed it down. "For as bad as these can end up being, I think I'm addicted to the surprise. It's so much fun!" She held out a handful to the group. "Any takers to the Bertie Bott's Roulette?" Her eyebrows wiggled enticingly, surely no one could resist candy from a Hufflepuff's hand right? Even if they had a chance of being downright disgusting?

"Thanks.", Opeila said when Sylvain came back with the candy and handed her the sherbet lemons.
"More like all balls we had last year." The Slytherin put one of the sherbet lemons into her mouth. Sylvain's question what would happen if they didn't allow another ball made her face turn a little red. "I guess we'd hope that everyone learned from the mistakes that er... the other idiots made who thought a secret ball was a good idea." She sent a quick look to Flash. The Slytherin still felt guilty for her part in the event. Especially after the spider attack she should have known better.
It was Flash who put an end to the assumptions by telling them that he and a few students had been asked to organize the next ball. "Wait, really?", Opeila asked, truly surprised. She really hadn't expected that. "Or maybe the professors learned that there is no point in trying to talk sense into us...", she murmured and chuckled at Willow's comment. "Yes, and that. Well, then I'll definitely be there! Gotta see what you'll make out of it." She smiled, sucking on her sherbet lemon. Opeila felt alright. Or maybe not alright, but the moment where she hadn't been sure if she could hold her tears back was over. The young girl was back in control.
That was also thanks to her friends, who were really not bad at changing the topic. Willow won that prize by far when she invited them all to Bertie Bott's Roulette. "I'm in!", Opeila called out and took a green bean. For a moment she just eyed it suspiciously. "That's so going to be a mistake, probably grass or something like that..." The Slytherin put it into her mouth anyway and immediately pulled a face. "Ugh- Oh wait, that's alright! No bad guess from my side, it's peppermint..."

Quietly, Sylvain stretched his arm out to receive the bean offered as snackrifice. Reddish brown? He would cock his head sideways, putting the bean level with his eyes as if hunting for some clue of what flavor might be contained within. It didn't matter that there was only one way to know for certain, he would take the chance to observe it for how it looked before he determined how it tasted. Looking to Willow, then Flash, Sylvain looked back to Opeila. She had been lucky. Lucky that it wasn't grass, or bogey, or matcha. "Peppermint?" He said almost incredulous, his eyebrows arching with curiosity. From what he had seen, decent flavors were harder to come by than rotten ones.
Plucking the bean from the palm of his hand, Sylvain held it between his index finger and his thumb. Holding it up, he dropped the treat into his mouth from about three or four inches high. Crushing the wretched thing between his teeth, the juicy flavor of it filled his mouth from lips to throat. It was gritty, this bean. All too familiar with the flavor, Sylvain chewed on courageously without stopping. An earthly musk would fill his nostrils as he chewed. The pungent odor of a protein packed lifeform might have caused others to gag, but.... Sylvain was grateful. As he chewed, he thought it was marvelous.
It was sad, but he was certain that it would likely never change. He had gotten used to the taste of worms.
