For a moment she caught a glimpse into the windows of his soul and though the image was fleeting, he had looked directly into her eyes. Preceded by a deep breath, as it was only a glancing blow, she noted that although he might not have had the confidence to maintain that look and posture for very long, the notion that he dared to do so at all was enough to make her head feel like a room full of fireworks. She definitely didn't understand the way she felt now, but it wouldn't stop her from trying to understand him.

Closing in, she assertively took his hand into hers and pressed his non-dominant hand to the side of her stomach just above her waist. If he slipped or grabbed for more, she'd let him know right away the cost of his foolishness but for now she was content to show him the simplicity of ballroom style fluid motion. She would guide him, and if he could follow they would dance. First swaying backward, letting distance come between them while expecting him to follow, then raising his hand above her head to twirl yet again. Returning to his arms she embraced him tight, as tight as she felt was appropriate to settle his nerves before chuckling once more. Though short lived, it was romantic at the least.

"It seems the ball is ending." She said, the snarky pout which she withheld for disappointment subtly began peaking out from behind her mask. "and we only just started dancing." The thought of being separated so soon after finding someone brave enough to rise to her challenge was heartbreaking to say the very least. Thinking that surely they would never see each other again, she beckoned him to make time stop. "Please, tell me your name."

The more he did it, the more he got better at being in the moment instead of thinking ahead. It was actually kind of nice, even with the fact that he was now able to be somewhat confident and not look like a wimp in front of her, just that general feeling of being there felt incredible and it only pushed him further to block his thoughts out. An endless positive feedback loop, one he wished he could keep going forever.

The nervousness somewhat began to creep back in when she grabbed his hand and put his hand on her waist but he was ready for this. He knew how dancing worked a bit by just watching them. He had already spent all that time preparing for this, he surely did not want to go back to being nervous now so he pushed it all aside and stood his ground, trying his best to look like he had an idea of what he was supposed to be doing. Thankfully, it wasn't as complicated as he thought. All he really had to do was follow, it was almost as if she was dancing and he simply happened to be there to cheer her on. Not that he minded that in any way, he already thought she was really good at composing herself and seeing her dance was a joy. He'd be lying if he said he didn't feel his mouth open up ever so slightly as she suddenly did a twirl. He should've expected it but seeing it up close was an experience of its own, but he didn't let that break his composure.

What happened next did, however. It probably not for more than a second or two but she briefly held him and he wasn't sure what he felt at that moment. Nervousness was not the word for it. It all felt like a fever dream as it was but his head felt light all of a sudden. He'd only ever felt it a handful of times but it felt like colours exploding inside his head. And he no longer needed to block his thoughts out at that point, he was there now, there was no doubt about it. A small smile crept on his face, one he didn't bother hiding.

He blinked as she talked, his face going back to normal, minus the dead eyes, they looked normal for a change; he was far from bored. When he finally processed what she said a second or so later, he felt everything he had felt so far drain away a bit. It wasn't heartbreaking, just disappointing. He was panicking and accepting it at the same time. He really didn't want it to end, it had barely been any time at all but he knew it was going to. He wanted to say something along the lines of 'Well, just how it is, I suppose.' Something sensible and something that made for a good way to end the night. He was probably not going to see her again, not unless something like this happened again and he needed to make sure he didn't end it on a negative note.

Although at the end, he simply managed to push out a quiet, "Sorry." Had he not wasted all his time worrying about this, he would've been here way earlier. Hell maybe the would've actually danced properly for a good time instead of the few seconds they did. Although would they even had met in that case? But of course, everything happens for a reason, doesn't it? "I'm Noah Page. I forgot we hadn't even exchanged names yet..." For once, it wasn't out of necessity. He didn't like introducing himself, it felt like a boring formality but it felt like he'd actually made a friend here and he couldn't imagine how cruel fate must have been to have made it in a situation like this of all things. All he could was enjoy the last few minutes they were going to spend together, probably seconds, at that point.

It squirmed. It squirmed, and squealed, and squelched and- it burned. Everything seemed to fall into place beautifully, during those last few minutes of contemplation. The doll sailed through the bright white, and across the room. Red hands grabbed, and pulled the little square of cloth into a burning belly, consuming it. It screamed, god how it screamed. For a second, Xailah actually contemplated running into the fire to pluck it out- just to stop the horrible cries. She understood that she had destroyed something that was capable of feeling pain- but only once its protective layer of burlap was gone. As the thing burned, one couldn't help but wonder why this fire- the red one- killed the sentient art project, and not the bluebells. Perhaps there was something organic, that hid beneath the guise of a poppet? How peculiar.

And just like that, the squirming menace was reduced to nothing more than a pile of grey ash. It was too simple. The fire- it was far too simple. The doll was made of burlap and straw- flammable material. But the outside of the doll mattered very little. Like people, the only thing that really mattered were their insides. The innards of the Living Dolls were rather different than that of a Misfit, or a Soul Jar. Living Dolls lacked a core- a hair core like the misfits anyways- making them very strong. If Xailah read those books right, she suspected that the doll wasn't quite as "dead" as it made out to be. If a bird could rise again from ash... why couldn't a magical doll? But she would seize the brief sense of relief, at the things undoing- even if the feeling might have been false.

Not much else would be seen after that- due to a bright burst of beautiful, white light, from behind. An attempt to purge the shadows venom. A sizzle of a dying fire would be heard. Once the light died, Xailah turned to where Meenauh and that other girl had collapsed. Illowy was already helping Meenauh up- thats what it looked like anyways. Xailah blinked and shook her head, in an attempt to rid her vision of stars, and lingering specks of light. She heard Illowys voice, and the disappointment in it. The disappointment hurt, but she would take the disappointment over other possible outcomes. It was fair. "It would have tried to kill you, if you helped me." At the time of first discovering the object, she had been eager to tell Illowy on the day they went to speak with Griffith. Xailah had promised that if she found anything about the poppets found in the forest, that Illowy would be the first to know.

Xailah had found things. She found a thing, and after a little research, she found that she would never be able to get rid of it effectively, or tell anyone about it. Only a few found out- a few close friends that weren't supposed to find out about it. Had Xailah branched out- had she looked for help, others would have gotten hurt. Illowy would have gotten hurt. Xailah couldn't have that. She valued the snake- and not because the serpent had information. The lioness would feel a tug on her hand. Time to go. She couldn't see who, but she subconsciously already knew the who. "I'll find you!" She called to Illowy. A hand would be extended, a pinkie outstretched, but out of grasp. It was a bit late to try and fulfill broken promises, but it needed to be done. Illowy deserved to know. She would know.

“Of course."

Him twirling her around had been all to worth it- the giggle, the way she swayed to get her balance, even though he would never let her fall. No, Drew wouldn’t ever drop Akari. The way she blushed, and that look, that look on her face as they kept eye contact. He would set her down, but his hands would linger around her waist for absolutely no other reason than to keep her steady after his surprise a few seconds earlier. But she did relax, and kept her hands around his shoulders, as if giving him a hug. A very very long hug. So, he would do similarly and keep his hands where they were, hooking both hands around each other, lingering by the small of her back.

Merlin’s pants, she was beautiful.

And she put her head on his chest, resting it there. Drew tensed, only a tiny bit, barely any time at all, but his muscles would release that tension in less than a second. Normally she would not be able to do this, mostly because of Drew’s frequent growth spurts, but also because of Akari’s petite body shape, but since she had worn heels, it had given her a couple extra inches and she could now. Oh, and Drew was so very glad she had worn heels that day, because otherwise, Drew wouldn’t have his adorable date to the Masquerade Dance like this.

They swayed like that for a while, Drew being more careful than he had ever really been with anyone. Drew had a strange feeling that he should lean forward the two inches to kiss her on her hair. But he stopped short. He hadn’t jolted Akari, thankfully.

But that’s not the kind of relationship they had. They didn’t like each other in any romantic way. They were nothing more than friends. Good friends, maybe. Maybe even close friends. But it wasn’t like they were developing ginormous crushes on each other.

Right?

Totally. Definitely. Why would it be any other way?

Speaking to: @Aaron Jones(As Madeleine Nakamura) & @Maya Galim

▁ ▂ ▄ ▅ ▆ ▇ █ ||~♟~|| ▇ ▆ ▅ ▄ ▂ ▁

Selim felt like he was slipping deep into his endless, dark consciousness. He was afraid, and he was retreating into himself, but what was inside him was worse. He faded in and out of awareness, and clawed his way back to the surface, back into the driver's seat of his body before one of the voices took the wheel.

He could hear them, they were rather loud, cluttering his ears with their whispy murmurs, but he was still able to hear Madeleine. She had slipped into Japanese, he could understand her better that way. Instinctively he dipped into the language as well.

The girl was speaking, and he got snippets of questions. He forced out a reply. "No... no adults..." He closed his eye, giving broken up directions to the hospital wing, only to be interrupted by the very thing he denied.

An adult, the professor he had hidden behind, had come to take him. Panic seized his chest, aggravating it into a coughing fit that raked his thin frame, he flinched at the voice, at the touch of another human as Madeleine supported his weight. He felt heavy, and knew walking was beyond him, but still...

The professor offered to carry him, Everything in his instincts screamed for him not to, not to let another adult hold such power over him. Too many adults with power over his mind, one more was one too many.

Paranoia's whispers grew loud as Selim desperately tried to seize his logic in a vice grip, his chest was heaving with anxious breaths as he fought off a panic attack. His form trembled, easily mistaken for his lacking health or cold, water-drenched form. It was fear, of course, it was fear, the demon that fed off him like a leech riddled with disease.

His mind spiraling he tried desperately to fight against the pure terror rising up from where he had trapped it for so long. His professional facade broke, and the child slipped to the ground, breaths choppy, shallow. His vision began to fade, and he almost fainted to the sound of clattering voices only he could hear. They were practically shoveling panic down his throat as he tried to choak it up.

The Professor was awaiting an answer.

The voices grappled for the seat, for control of his mind, but for once he wasn't willing to give it up without a fight.

His heartbeat was fluttering rapidly, like a mouse caught in the constricting Coils of a Python. The Snake was just waiting for him to pass on to the afterlife.

He forced his voice to claw up his throat. His voice, none of the others.

Blurry vision, distortion, stress, it was a recepie for his nightmares to creep into the waking world. Terrible beings, disjointed, unnatural, dancing in a twisted, red-barked forest that seemed to adapt to reality. His demons were trying to make their illustrations of the world seem all the more real.

His father taught him how to remain cohesive in such conditions.

He shut his eyes, flipped off his outside stimulation, and focused only on speaking through his sickly breathing. In Japanese, (he could hardly translate his thoughts to English with how tumultuous his brain was at the moment) he spoke. "F..... fine." The fallen, clammy child rasped through clenching teeth, "Don't stay long after dropping..... me.... off though."

He forced his mind into bursts of cohesion, though felt like he was living in a fever dream.

If the cursed medical staff tried to heal him with magic he'd deny them, how would he know they aren't doing something more than just healing him? He was just a second-year. No, if they wanted to heal him with their own hands, they'd do it either the muggle way or let him stitch up his own face.

He'd never trust' healing'magic again, no more then he'd trust an overly-friendly stranger offering him the world on a silver platter.

Paranioa approves.

Besides, he'd never deny the possibility of scarring. He was broken on the inside, and if he was unmarred on the outside, then was he any better than the doll his father wanted him to be?

Flawless skin would make him feel like he wasn't alive, he'd loose his footing, he'd no longer be able to ground himself in reality-

... He'd slip into the corners of his blighted mind.

And if he was no longer in control... then who would be?

.
.
.

Cruel laughter echoed around him in the silence that seemed to envelope him.

That was enough of an answer for him.

"No... no adults..." he said in Japanese, and Madeleine nodded in agreement even though she thought it was the wrong choice. An adult would make this so much simpler. Why did he not want one? No matter. No adults meant that Maddie would need to escort her new companion all the way to the hospital wing herself. Between his mumbled directions, she picked up on the fact that it was just one floor up, which was a relief. Not too far to go then.

"Okay, let's go-"

Suddenly, an adult approached the duo of Madeleine and Selim. The same professor that had called after the blonde beauty (Erin Ryan) who distracted Maddie earlier. The French girl's brown eyes examined the woman through her leaf mask, wondering if she was a healer of some sort. But no, she was offering to escort them to the hospital. It did not take much mental fortitude to switch back to English, likely the only language all three of them shared.

"Yes, he's feeling very unwell," she confirmed to the woman, unsure if she had noticed her presence or not. Madeleine was one of the only reasons Selim was still standing, a fact she would not soon forget given his blood was almost undoubtedly smeared onto her skin and dress by now (she didn't want to look to confirm yet). The idea of not having to support him all the way there was enticing when the woman suddenly offered to carry him, but-

Selim Faust seemed incredibly hesitant. His grip on Maddie had changed - tightened and warped. Oh gosh. Vladimir had said that the students at this school were rather unpredictable. Did that apply to the staff as well? Maddie's eyes suddenly turned analytical of the woman, but almost as soon as the paranoia had entered her mind, it left. What in the world was she thinking? Of course the staff of a school could be trusted. Vladimir and Selim both had suggested that she stick close to them in order to stay out of trouble. Besides, why would there ever be suspicious characters employed at a school? That was just preposterous!

Madeleine's expression was almost one of guilt for mistrusting the woman, but she quickly wiped the look away and turned instead to Selim as he finally agreed to it. "He said okay, but we're meeting someone there, so you don't have to stay long. You'll be able to come back here and help," Maddie translated for the woman as she carefully adjusted her hold on Selim and handed him off to the professor to support on their way out of the ball. She cringed at the confirmed sight of blood all over her dress and skin, but tried not to dwell on it as she looked back at the professor.

"I'm Madeleine, a Beauxbatons student. It's a friend of ours that went ahead to the hospital, so thank you for escorting us," she said, instinctively curtsying as she introduced herself. Was Vladimir a friend? Well, it was just the easiest method to explain herself to the woman. An unimportant detail at the moment as the three of them left the ball.
TL;DR: Handing off Selim to Maya to carry and leaving the ball (presumably with them)

When Rose came back into the Masquerade, Eyre was still with Anastasia. Rose would go over to get a drink, looking back up to see Anastasia drag Eyre off. Rose's throat constricted, and she walked off to the side of the ball, where she sat down and waited. And waited.

Well, of course. She knew that anyone would be smart to choose Anastasia over Rose, but she kind of thought that Eyre wouldn't. Of course, he would, though. Anastasia was all the things Rose had convinced herself she wasn't- gorgeous, talented, strong, smart... rich. Perfect Anastasia with her perfect hair, her perfect hands, her perfect acting, her ruthless confidence. Why would anybody fall in love, spend time, or even notice Rose when you compared her with the absolutely perfect Anastasia Beckett?

Rose had actually felt good that night. She had felt beautiful, maybe even deserving of her amazing boyfriend and all the compliments showered on her that night. She had felt like maybe, just this once, they could have fun without being bothered by Eyre's stupid, stupid ex-friend. But no, it hadn't been possible. She had to haul him off, and he hadn't put up enough of a fight to stay with her. Maybe he wanted to stay with Anastasia tonight. Anyone would. Maybe she was just stupid. She finished her drink quickly and untied her mask, fingering it thoughtfully.

Gah, Rose hated the feeling. The feeling that she was a placeholder. She knew, deep inside, that it wasn't Eyre's intent to ditch her. But he still had. She wasn't mad at him, not in any way. So Rose sat there all night, wallowing in her self-doubt and drowning in her self-pity, sending her self esteem down to the horrible depths of nothing. Once students started to be encouraged to leave the ball, Rose would get up without hesitation, leaving her empty drink glass on the floor. Of course, Anastasia Beckett had to ruin their night.

Rose got up, walking swiftly away. Her stance was very similar to someone storming away, but she was also slightly dignified. Rose's heels clicked all the way to Gryffindor Tower, where she would quickly change out of her dress and into her pajamas and crawl into her bed, stifling a dry sob. She had been looking forward to tonight. And Eyre had never come back.

Okay, so she had spoken to the two strangers. A full sentence. 6 full words. A contraction, by Autumn, who never used contractions. So, how could she escape the situation? How could she redeem talking to two strangers? She knew what she had to do.

Autumn, extremely dignified and smoothly, ran away from the pair.

Okay, maybe it had not been dignified and smooth. Maybe it had not been dignified or smooth. But at least she'd left. That was good enough, right?

No, no it was not. She almost contemplated running in the direction of the group who had chased after the ghost knight, but then regained her sanity, vague will to live and self-preservative instinct.

Still, after the ghost stunt Hogwarts had just pulled, Autumn reflexes and paranoia were very much active and she was jumping at the smallest of noises. She attempted to calm herself down, succeeding enough to regain her senses. Okay, if Hogwarts wanted to do its usual thing and put everyone in a horrible situation, the best thing she had to do was to not worry and instead identify and observe the beginnings of disaster.

Maybe if she just looked for anything suspicious, she would be able to deal with any problems before they become too big, or at least run away before any real threats were formed.

Unlike most dances she had attended, the end the masquerade ball felt more and more bittersweet as each student departed the ballroom. Usually it was a relief to her that such a formal event was coming to an end, but she found herself wanting more than what she got. Not closure. Now that she knew his name, Noah could expect a letter or two when she thought of him while she was back home. The very thought of writing him letters was alluring, but she was getting ahead of herself. They still had to say goodbye first, and she still had yet to introduce herself.

"Roberta Martin," she said with a gracious dip, a formal introduction, but less out of obligation than it was out of mutual respect. She had said it aloud half expecting him to recognize her as one of the French Pureblood Aristocracy, a reputation that outshone the reality. Her other half was hopeful that he didn't recognize the name, and that his first impression of her remained what it was. Her family was more humble than their origins implied, though she was quickly becoming an exception. In her eyes, nobility was a curse as much as it was a privilege, and the boy was shy enough as he was without the burden. She did not want him to start changing now, but perhaps after she got to know him better she might.

As the school chaperones gave the star crossed children the proverbial boot essentially telling them they couldn't stay here any longer, but notably not that they had to go home, the warrior spirit within Roberta was reinvigorated. She would not say goodbye until she had something to write home about. She wanted, more than anything, something to brag about. Something that spoke of her conquest, or achievement. This was after all her first dance with a stranger, and it had ended with romance. She could hardly tell her friends that she let the opportunity to sneak off with a charming boy slip through her grasp.

She at least had an idea of where she wanted to go, although the owlery was hardly a romantic venue. It did overlook the Castle grounds. Something she had learned after touring the Castle shortly after her arrival to the establishment. The view of Hogwarts and the surrounding area, while grim on her first night, would likely be more enchanting with the right partner.

"Noah," she started with a whisper, a pleading look in her eyes as she wrapped her arm under his. "I want to write a letter to my father. Will you escort me to the owlery?" If he was a gentlemen he could hardly say no, and if he wasn't interested in her, she would find out shortly.
