"???"
The floorboard beneath his feet creaked as he leaned heavily onto his backfoot, creating a wide space between himself and the older boy. Valentine's eyes narrowed ever so slightly, even as his hands stayed clear from his chest, content, to remain hanging loosely by his side. He regarded the older boy with an air of scrutiny, wondering what on earth he could possibly have done to invoke such an outburst. Maybe Rafael (whom he had failed to recognize up until Lydia called out his name; even then, Valentine hardly knew the Quidditch Captain or any of his convoluted affairs) was under the influence of a spiked drink or a potion; it would certainly explain his behavior. If this was the case, the younger Gryffindor had no intention of being roped into this mess any further than he already was.
Of course, that didn't mean he wasn't ready for a fight.
He felt it, like the gentle dance of wind on his palm as Lydia slipped away from his grasp. The same touch that drove Rafael to such a passionate outburst manifested in the softening of Valentine's gaze. She was right, what she thought and said. This conflict didn't have to happen. It could have been stopped right then and there. Yet, his night had been uneventful up until now. Something happened then. The tone of his aura changed. His eyes were focused, open, and gazing at Rafael as though he could burn a hole through him with his stare alone.
"Friend of yours?" he questioned his beautiful companion in a tone that suggested the stranger was anything but.
He crossed his arms across his chest, anticipating what he would do. Desperate people always looked for a fight.
Well, he was desperate too, in that way.

Roberta smiled wide as the stranger admitted to never really having danced before, but the toothy grin was overthrown by a frown as he apologized. The young pureblood had been to at least a handful of formal balls by now, each of which she had often been expected to dance with her father at least once, if not twice, during those occasions. She was not surprised by his ignorance however, she understood well enough that the Pureblood lifestyle was fading from existence. Much less, her family was hardly ordinary even among the purebloods, but something about this boy wasn't ordinary either.
The room itself became something of a blur around her as she focused on herself and the boy in front of her. Now that she had stopped moving she began to pay attention to all the little details that she had only subconsciously picked up before. Her hands were sweaty. Something that often earned a tease or two from her father, and betrayed her true nervousness. The boy seemed to pause for moments, gathering his thoughts and contemplating whatever battles he waged in the war of his mind. His heart wasn't so much on his sleeve as it seemed to be at the tip of his tongue.
She wouldn't let the minor set back of ignorance discourage her however. The young warrior was determined to make the most of the time she had at here at Hogwarts. Something as silly as being afraid to dance wasn't going to cut it unfortunately for him. The Martin Family were never satisfied so long as fear was in the room, and typically they charged towards their fears head first. Courage was expected in all endeavors, and this was no different nor would she allow it to become an exception. She would either try to kill the butterflies in his stomach to make him see reason, or make it worse in the process. She wasn't really sure, but was trying nonetheless.
"I can show you how if you want," she said while discretely drying the palms of her hands and curtsying with a giggling flourish. She whispered again, "you have nothing to be sorry for." In truth, she was just eager to return to the fluid motion of dance, captivated by the sound of music with the worries of judgement far from her thoughts. His problems were just that. His problems.
Whether or not he had the courage to rise to her challenge would determine if she thought him worthy or not, and she had given him ample opportunities.

It was hard to not stop staring at his feet, he barely ever looked straight to begin with but it was way harder right now, at a moment he felt like he actually should be looking at her and not away from her but he felt incredibly embarrassed. He felt like saying so many things to try and explain things out so she could understand things and forgive him and let him go.
Wait, let him go? Was he expecting her to kill him or something? That was against the rules, she couldn't do that. He was safe, he shouldn't worry too much about dying really. Or maybe he should, the last time he was in a ball he did nearly end up dying. Was it this seemingly innocent girl this time then? Although come to think of it, she was far from innocent... yes, he could totally see her stabbing him right there and then. It was entirely possible.
Fortunately his body was recovering from the embarrassment somehwat and he wasn't feeling as on edge as he did before, not physically at least. It was still hard to look up or anything but the few seconds had him calm down a bit, ever so slightly but still.
But then to his utter surprise, he wasn't stabbed, nor shouted at but heard her ask him if he wanted to learn. Learn? In the middle of a dance... at a place like this? It wasn't exactly the best place to learn, was it?
But... It did seem like a good idea when he thought about it a bit. He took a few seconds to think it over and decided it was the best possible thing to do. That's when she whispered yet again to him, giving him chills again, he was still not used to that but it also sent a wave of comfort over him to hear that. At first he felt like she only offered to teach him because she didn't have any choice anyway but now he felt like she didn't actually mind this as much as he was thinking she did.
Or maybe he was being optimistic but he threw all of that out of his head, for now he had to focus on the person that had done so much for him, to be honest, if it was him, he would've dumped himself long back. It was far too much kindness that she had shown to him and he was starting to feel like he was making excuses to avoid everything she was doing for him.
With that, he closed his eyes, taking in a deep breath and clearing his head, focusing on thing only, the situation he was in right now, not the ones he could be in or would end up in. He opened his eyes back up again, looking up at the girl. The fear in his facial features had melted away, he was determined to try his best now. Trying his best to look at her right in the eye, but getting embarrassed and softening his focus to just generally look in his direction before he could start overthinking it as his face lost some of the colour it had taken on and going back to looking like the usual face he had but without the part that made everyone want to run away from him, for once, he looked like he wanted to be there.
He nodded, fully ready to start dancing. His body was ready, he would've started pulling out some sick moves already. But then he realised he didn't actually know what to do and just awkwardly stood there, waiting for her to tell him to do something or... something. It was starting to worry him if he'd be able to learn now but nope, he couldn't start thinking about it now. Silence, brain.

"Miss Tempete, then. A gorgeous name."
And at that, Viola laughed. Her laugh was usually sweet, humble and with fake sincerity, almost like spending a perfect day in a meadow of daisies and roses, never to find out that they had been manufactured in a factory in a neighbour country, and that it had all been an elaborate ruse to distract you while your business was bankrupted. And even if you did find out, you would still find yourself missing how that meadow made you feel so calm and happy.
Viola's sincere laugh sounded more rough, less cultured, more abrupt; the kind of laugh one had when everything was so messed up, but ironically it was still humorous. The kind where you think about how painful everything is, but you cannot seem to stop laughing no matter how much you try. The kind that sounded course and lost. And maybe that wasn't even her real laugh. How would she know. The only "sincere" laughs she'd had before had been ironic in times of sadness. That probably wasn't an accurate representation of what her sincere laugh would be, and-
Okay. Long story short; Viola didn't laugh sincerely very often.
And, plot twist; she was not about to do so now.
She gave her usual sweet, flattered laugh and spoke once again.
"Well, Mr Baron. Would not have taken you for a charmer," she absolutely had, "but the flattery is much appreciated. Please do continue."
A smirk, and an extended elbow.
Viola matched the smirk with a fake innocent one of her own, and took the elbow without hesitance.
"Well then, Miss, would you honor me with a dance?"
Viola paused, faking a look that made her seem as if she was considering it, but a short enough pause to make it clear she was kidding.
"Well, I suppose I can fit it into my schedule, but it will be hard, what with all the time I have to spend dealing with first year divas throwing tantrums and chatting with other charming, icy-blue eyed boys. I saw you dancing with Miss Katherine earlier. I think the dance could certainly be worth the effort."
And, honestly? Really down to the truth, without the responsibilities and expectations and other useless things that were made out to be all that mattered? Viola was having fun. Genuine, honest fun.
Of course it had to be interrupted by a first year diva throwing a tantrum.
"I'm sorry to interrupt your.."
Viola was bored already.
"Your talk, but I must say something to the girl who had something to say about me."
Cool, cool. What was she doing with her eyes? What an eccentric freak.
"Now if I'm guessing correctly you are from Beauxbatons, sad and I thought they had elegance and poise both on how they speak and act what a shame."
Maybe this would have been offensive, if Viola cared at all about what the girl had to say about her. When someone someone with an absurd lack of elegance or poise judged someone who had more elegance and poise in their pinkie finger than the judger had in their whole body, if the judger had a single drop of confidence in their veins, they would not be particularly affected by the insult.
"Anyways I won't judge, now let's get into the serious talk shall we?"
Was she really going to continue? Ugh.
Still, Viola kept a warm smile on her face, a raised eyebrow encouraging Katherine to go on.
"You speak of me not knowing who I am, but that's not even the problem, you are on Hogwarts premises aka my school, so if you came here to say something about me in my school, then love that's even sloppier, even if I didn't hear it many others would surely come up to you and attack you harshly and quite rudely, I don't wish that on anyone but if you came here to talk crap about me at least don't be sloppy about it."
Okay.
Okay, first of all, she had simply told her date that he could do better. It had been an icebreaker and the purpose had not been to attack anyone. But for as long as Miss Katherine kept on complaining and spewing meaningless words and wasting both Viola and Alexander's time, she felt that her purpose was slowly becoming more and more to attack someone.
Second of all, how was it sloppy to maybe, possibly but not really insult someone in their own school, if only one goth loser would stand up for them. It was not sloppy, it was fun and had small consequences. And Viola did not get much fun back at home, so if she got it here, then that was perfect.
Third of all, only one goth loser had come to attack her harshly, rudely, and needless to say, stupidly. She did not know what kind of delusion Katherine was going through, but it seemed that the school did not quite see her the way she thought they did. Viola was right; she was not a queen, merely a pawn in a dress.
And now Viola, with fewer braincells than before she had heard Katherine's rant, had to reply to the thing? Wow. All she had wanted was to have some fun, make small talk and dance. This had not been on her to-do list.
Still, a warm voice spilling lies it was, she supposed.
"Oh, Katherine. I am so, so apologetic for my words. Honestly, my intention was never to attack you; it was meant as a joke or an icebreaker to start a conversation with Alexander over here, which I already told your friend in the black dress. She was delightful, by the way. Complimented my lips, and everything. Now, I believe Mr Baron and I have a dance to get to. Where's your partner? Maybe we could dance together."
She smiled sweetly.

Madeleine was so relieved when her spell successfully turned part of the floor spongy. She watched the blonde crash into another girl that had been part of the fighting, but the two of them fell to the softened floor below and were saved from any life-threatening injuries.Bolded Text - French | Regular Text - English | Bolded Black Text - Japanese

Madeleine's heart was pounding in her chest at the sight, and she realized that her wand was still outstretched and pointing at the chaos. She quickly tucked her wand back into her dress, then turned her brown eyes back on the girls, intent on going to help them. But the sight of the blonde made Maddie hesitate. Her previously pale skin had turned completely dark in the light of the green sparks in that corner of the room. Had she been hit by a curse, or- Was it the green sparks themselves? Maddie wracked her mind for the knowledge of what the green sparks did, and recalled learning that they not only looked pretty - another intent was to reveal dark magic.
Oh no. Had the girl been hit by a stray curse that was flying around because of the fight? Madeleine found herself getting angry - why the hell were these Hogwarts kids fighting to begin with? Who had brought a cursed doll to the ball? And why had they decided now was the best time to air their frustrations with each other? She was even doubting her own date now, but-
"Mary-- MARY!"
That doubt quickly disappeared when she saw Vladimir launch himself to the side of the blonde girl, checking on her. Maddie's chest settled a bit at the sight, and she took a deep breath as she steeled herself to go over there and yell at everyone else involved to get their act together.
"Vladimir, is she okay?" Madeleine called out, unsure if he would even hear her over the chaos that was still unfolding as she started moving closer. As she did get closer, though, she noticed a familiar presence that promptly distracted her and made her pause. The girl from their arrival at school. Madeleine didn't know how she recognized the girl (Erin Ryan) just off her blonde hair considering she was wearing a skeletal mask, but she had that same presence that had shocked Madeleine back at the Hogwarts Courtyard. Why was she involved in the fray? Was everyone here - even the really pretty upperclassmen - just crazy? But then she was leaving, and Madeleine's brown eyes followed the girl to the ballroom doors. She was distracted enough to miss the fact that Vladimir was shouting orders at Selim about her.
A professor - or who Madeleine could only presume was a professor (Maya Galim) - seemed to call after the girl as she left. Finally, a professor was getting involved and could sort out this whole mess, meaning Maddie wouldn't have to go yell at everyone after all. Her fire to interrupt the fighting had faded between being distracted by the Hogwarts beauty and noticing the professor that was aware of the situation - but that's when Maddie's eyes were drawn to Selim. Eyes widened again. He was hurt and bleeding. And he was headed straight for her. Why?
"We... need to... go. Mr. Athanatos is leaving the ball... it's too dangerous... injured friend." He coughed. "I was asked... to escort you out... don't want you... getting injured..." He was supposed to escort her out? He was worried about her getting injured? Had he looked in a mirror lately? Madeleine was incredulous at the boy who was worrying about her when he looked like a scene out of a horror movie. She wished she knew healing spells. Why didn't they teach any in first year?
"So... can we leave..." These words were spoken in Japanese, further confirming the heritage they shared. He seemed frustrated at this and continued in English. "I need to apply... prop-er... first aid... to my-self. Vladimir... will wait- no... meet up with us... as soon as he can... I think he said?" At the mention of Vladimir, Madeleine looked towards where she had last seen him and the girl who had fallen. He looked to be trying to carry her to safety. That was a relief. And that's what Maddie needed to do, too.
"Is Japanese easier for you right now?" she asked as her eyes looked back to Selim, her mother's native tongue coming easily to her. Despite her aversion to the blood he was sporting, she moved closer to him and took one of his arms around her shoulder like she had seen done before for injured people. She was helping him to walk by supporting part of his weight. "You're the one we should be worried about here. Let's get you to the hospital, you guys have one of those right? Where we can find a healer? I bet that's where Vladimir is headed, too," she said.
Madeleine was very much cringing at the fact that her skin was in contact with his blood and her dress was likely getting ruined, but she tried very hard to push those thoughts to the back of her mind. She had never seen someone so hurt before in person, and she knew they needed to find help. "Or maybe we should get one of the professors to heal you-" This thought occurred to her when her eyes had subconsciously looked around the room for Cassanora only to remember that this ballroom was full of capable adult wizards who could probably help faster than it would take to get to Hogwarts' hospital - wherever that was. There was her headmaster and his dancing partner, and she bet that Cassanora's dad was around here somewhere too!
She looked back at the boy she was helping to support, "Where should we go? Find an adult in the crowd or leave to the hospital?"
TL;DR: Relieved to see that her spell worked, about to go over to the chaos and give everyone a piece of her mind, distracted by the alluring nature of Erin Ryan, then interrupted by the injured Selim and helping him to walk, offering the choice to go to the Hogwarts hospital or find another adult to heal him

Things didn't go horribly wrong this time, it seemed. Even though it had been a struggle to get the doll under control, now that it was immobilized, it could not do anything to assuage its fate. As @Meenauh Silmataurea shone a bright, blazing light that would attract the attention of any staff that had not already caught on, @Xailah Alptraum threw her devoted admirer into the nearby flame. Even with her eyesight hindered, it would be hard to miss this time around.
A high-pitched squealing, like steam from a kettle, emitted from the doll. Then, the horrendous smell of cooking meat entered the equation. The painful noise would distort inhumanly as the burlap started burning away much slower than cloth ought to burn. It revealed a wriggling black thing underneath. Amidst the flames and searing magical light, it would vibrate with sickening, squelching squirts until it finally shriveled and stopped moving. As it burned, it would transfigure into ash. Dead.
The timing was good, as shortly after Maya would begin the efforts of stopping the wild blaze. She would succeed in dousing the worst of the fire in quenching water. Luckily, the curtains would be easily fixed by magic, and she would be joined by others who were called to action to use magic to quickly stifle the flame. 'Twas but a fitful flicker.
Now that the doll is gone, and the fire is snuffed out, there was little else to add to the night's festivities. There were still some that continued to dance, unimpressed by the heavy sigh of chaos that was gone as soon as it arrived. It was impossible to keep magical children tame, but it seemed no one got too badly hurt this time around. Maybe someone should do something about that power couple before they punch out the whole school.
As the light of the real fire died, a few house elves began going around slowly extinguishing the rest of the thousands of enchanted flames around the ball. A weariness set in as many of the last people there started shuffling out of the ball nursing wounds. The host had long since abandoned everyone to deal with the consequences of their own actions. A few older students and staff members from the various schools would start to turn in, suggesting the other students do the same. It wouldn't be long before the very last of those attending would be less courteously booted.

You may continue to post after that up until January 15th, when I will lock the ball (I will extend this for anyone that feels they still need time after that if asked). It's time to wrap up whatever drama you have found yourself in, but if you'd like to fight further, you'll need continue in another thread as your students are shuffled off to a very late bedtime.

- Your characters are no longer able to join the ongoing Hunt. People who have already joined the Hunt can still travel between all three locations, but each movement will still take a full action unless otherwise stated.
- Actions besides changing parties are any attempt to do something to someone else such as attack, investigate, cast any spell, or generally anything that has a chance to fail depending on your stats. Minor interactions that are agreed upon between two players are free to take as much as you like. A small smirk laced the snake's lips, though it hardly felt like the time to smile. It truly did seem like she could never see Xailah without someone's life, somewhere hanging in the balance; save for the single instance of conversating curiously over the purpose of muggle plasters. A fleeting moment of innocence the girls had been able to share, "We both have a habit of being where the trouble is." she agreed. Her smirk fell though as Xailah vaguely tried to explain herself. That she'd had, or at least known about this doll since the visit to their former Professor's... that was nearly a year ago. She'd been keeping this for that long?"We really need to ssstop meeting like this."
In spite of her need to know more that instant, she knew there was going to have to be a better time and place. Illowy's head turned to the other Gryffindor on the floor, looking a bit worse for wear. She wasn't certain of the girl's name, but could only recall one true interaction with the girl, one evening of vulnerability when she'd tried to offer her some better advice to being better then she was at the time. It was a matter of opinion if Illowy had improved since then.
Pale eyes flickered back to Xailah when she was advised to step back, heeding the girl's warning as she started back towards Meenauh where she might be of more help. As she stepped away, a bright light from the other lion's wand engulfed the space as the metamorph pitched the doll into the flames. The thing seemed to squeal and screeched like a whistling tea kettle before the flames ate the sound away. Truly a terrible sound she wasn't sad to hear end.
As the fire was put out, and house elves hurried to tidy up the damage, the end of the party was marked. People were beginning to file out from the ballroom and take their leave of the night. Arm raised to try to block out as much the lumos as she could, Illowy moved back to Meenauh's side to try to help the girl who seemed far less then steady as she attempted to change the darkness away and preserve the purity of the children around her, "Its over." she spoke carefully, "Let me help you." the snake offered, resting a hand on the girl's arm, hoping she would be allowed to assist the injured witch.
For a moment, her eyes flickered towards Xailah's direction, searching for her through the intense light, "You could have said something to me, ye know. I would have helped you." she informed, her voice more so disappointed then angry that this had been kept from her.

As the light blasted to blind everyone around, she'd look at @Vladimir Athanatos and @Marion Davenport, who weren't affected by it — not as she thought — leaving the site. He won't be able to get away with what everyone saw. She'd get him. They'd get him... Someone had to get him anyway. He cannot avoid it forever.
She shifted her glance to the throwing motion as @Xailah Alptraum was baseballing the doll — painful to watch, considering the relationship — but the job had to be done. She watched it through the blinding light, the show was disturbing. All the senses were connected — there was the picturesque display of the insides, the sound, the smell. Quite a lot to absorb, but the milestone was achieved. No way back. This time there was a distinct confirmation of the doll's destruction — something that was missing the last time.
They'd need to find Vladimir later. They needed to talk. And maybe @Thomas Lestrange had a story to tell as well as it seems Meenauh eventually found what he was divining.
The chest was still hurting and it seemed they needed to move. The ball was thankfully not on fire anymore, but everyone needed the light in the lives. They can dance it off later. As they all always do.
Suddenly she was approached by a girl — close to her fellow Gryffindor, Kyle — a connection she wouldn't know naturally but find out through careful observation as they years passed by. She only met her once or twice, or... it didn't matter really. She'd agreed to the offered assistance, but only to steady her stance: "Thank you, I am truly fine despite the looks," she'd say still holding the spot on her chest. Not lies, but an honest underestimation.
Meenauh didn't know whether they were talking with Xailah before, so not to consider rude, Meenauh would detach herself from @Illowy Magnard and would cut through the scene quickly to grab Xailah's hand and believing she wouldn't be able to oppose in the state she must have been at that moment, would drag her past everyone towards the doors to hide away from the eyes of the many. Next stop: Common Room — to breathe, to treat, to recapitulate.

Action: Grabbing Xailah and attempting to leave the ball.

The Fall Ball (Masquerade)
While having the ballroom go up in flames is not how anyone would want to spend their Halloween Masquerade Ball (again), it was a relief that most of the fire had been extinguished. It was, hopefully, not going to be a long night of watering down the fires. Perhaps some of the students would help in lessening the fire, however, from the looks of it, there were more students fleeing the site than helping.
As Maya was looking around at what else could be wrong, she saw @Selim Faust. No, she watched Selim for what was perhaps a good minute. His mask was shattered and he was picking at his mask, pulling out shards from his face. Out of everything that happened, he most likely had it bad. His jaw looked off (and was most likely broken) and he had shards from his mask all over his face. Granted, the fire was his fault, but Maya could not help but to feel for him. He made a dumb mistake, but it shouldn't cloud her judgement of helping him.
As Maya was making her way to Selim, she stopped mid-step and heard shrieks from nearby. Following the sound with her brown eyes, she saw the doll burning in the fire. It was crying in pain. The sound and vision of seeing the doll perish in the fire was something Maya had never seen before. In a matter of seconds it would be disintegrated. There was no way of grabbing the doll and figuring out what exactly it was. Instead, students went above their means to destroy something that they found different or creepy.
Maya looked to the small fires that were spread nearby in the ballroom. She took her wand and pointed it towards an area where more fires were close together. "Aqua Eructo!" she mumbled and a small amount of water drenched the smaller flames.
As the fire lessened, the ballroom was slowly going back to normal. Many students fled, but there were many who stayed and watched the "show" from afar. It was safe, in some way, for the Masquerade to keep going. Though she would not be surprised if the Masquerade would be ending soon.ROLL: 1d20 + ARC (15) = 8+15 = 22
As it was going back to normal, Maya looked back at where Selim was. He disappeared from his place. It was obvious that he was in a lot of pain. She wanted to take him to the Hospital Wing where the nurse would heal his wounds quickly. Maya searched around the ballroom for a wounded bird. It was not long until she saw him and went straight to the Slytherin boy. At that moment, he was vomiting blood and looked very unwell.ROLL: 1d20 (<10 = success to flee Maya; >10 = fail to flee Maya) = 15
Maya gently touched his shoulder. "You don't look well at all. Let's go to the Hospital Wing," she calmly said to the child. Although detention was most likely what should be given, she needed to be there for his health first. "We can get there faster if I carry you. Would you mind?" she asked him, looking for consent to lift his body into her arms.

The Fall Ball (Masquerade)
Posting to confirm that Piérre has left the Masquerade
Mentioning: @Vladimir Athanatos & @Marion DavenportNobody had complained or rejected his offer of help, though the Ravenclaw upperclassman had run off with Marion before Piérre had had time to explain that he meant nothing but good will and had been incredibly shattered to know that he had been responsible for Marion’s harm. They were gone before Piérre could say another word. As for the other individual that the Ravenclaw boy had been speaking to... @Selim Faust he too looked very worse for wear, bleeding rom what seemed to be every part of open skin, and a person was interacting with him.
Though it hurt Piérre deeply to have to run away from the situation which was unfolding, he knew that though he had not been responsible for this dark boy’s harm, he had been responsible for Marion’s. She had to come first and foremost, even if he desperately wanted to help everyone that he could.
“Wait up!” He shouted towards the boy who carried Marion out of the chaos of the Masquerade. ”Wait for me! Marion! MARION!” He wailed, tears dripping down his cheeks as he kicked himself forward on his Moontrimmer to chase after the receding pair.
Forget the fire, the chaos, whatever events had unfolded only moment beforehand... This was Piérre’s adventure now. He had to do anything that he could in order to help the person he had been responsible for harming... even if that meant abandoning others in order to do so.Posting to Confirm that Piérre has departed from the Masquerade
