The Sheep's Breakdown
12/13/20
Ross struggled sleeping. He always had. During the morning, wonderous daydreams of adventures and possibilities would flood his mind and take him to another world; however, as soon as night hit and the lights went out all of those warm thoughts ditched him and he was left in a sea of darkness as he drowned in his fears and regrets. At home he at least had a nightlight; however, his cramped little dorm nearly made him consider attempting to cast lumos the entire night so he could cram a couple Z's in before he had to wake up. Not every night had been like this of course. More often than not, he was too exhausted to think such thoughts.
Unluckily for him, that is not what had happened that night. Without the consistent classes of school to keep him consistently exhausted, he was left with far more energy than he had prior expected or desired. The thoughts had crawled through his brain like insects through a rotten apple all night, leaving him with hardly a wink of sleep. He had hardly been able to stay awake as he rolled around in bed when morning hit, yet every time he attempted to sleep it failed miserably. By the time it hit noon, Ross had given up and went about exhaustedly re-exploring the school once more as he bumped into walls. Not once did he consider eating- no no, he was far too tired to be considering eating. So he skipped lunch, avoiding sitting or laying down so he would not instantly pass out in public. His legs rewarded him by deciding to ache as he walked for multiple hours around the grounds. It had been a rather silent day, only passing a couple students of varying years each time he paced the hallways.
It was only until his stomach growled at him to man up did he make his way to the dining hall and sit down with what few kids were still at school during the week. His legs happily thanked him for finally allowing them to rest by proceeding to stop the searing pain that he had refused to confront the entirety of the day. He let out a sigh of relief he had been holding in. It was nearly the end of the horrendous day, and his body had blatantly been worn out enough to desire sleep now, right?
He continued to daze off into space until he was snapped out of it by some... laughter? He glanced over to his side to see a Hufflepuff happily laughing, presumably at a joke, another boy informed them. Ross wrinkled his nose. Would it be too hard for them to just shut up? he dazed back into thought, before being broken out of it by a loud "O-M-G, REALLY?" He grimaced. Was everything always this loud? There were less students than regular due to the Holidays... so why was it only now getting to his head? In fact, the more he sat there everything seemed to get louder and louder and louder. Soon, a searing headache entered his brain. he needed to get out of there.
Leaving his plate with few bites in his food, which was practically unheard of at Hogwarts, he cautiously stood up and looked around to make sure nobody was watching. It felt as if everyone was watching. He took his bottle of pumpkin juice in hand as if it were some form of weapon. Carefully, as if the whole world could hear his foot steps, he walked to the corner of the room and made himself comfortable against one of the several decorated Christmas trees. This one was covered in ornaments from head to toe, which Ross took great interest in at every moment besides the current one. He pulled his legs to his chest. Perhaps maybe this way it would be less loud.

The Sheep's Breakdown
@Ross Stephens
She had always liked Hogwarts during the holiday times. The huge, big, evergreen trees with their sparkling ornaments and lights and the stockings that were hung up. It was like the castle transformed overnight. She didn't know how the house-elves did it but every year, it seemed to be better than the next and the Gryffindor found herself nothing short of impressed. The dining halls were laden with food and though some had already elected to leave for the break though the girl had no intention of doing anything of the sort. The more time she could spend within the warm embraces of the castle and away from the cold and broody aura of the estate was a Christmas well spent in Elena's opinion sliding into a seat at the Gryffindor table glancing around. Cuttiing off a slice of the pecan pie that was present, the Gryffindor dug into relishing the taste as her eyes took a measure of room as if trying to find if anyone she knew was still around.
The result was nothing satisfying, the House tables were less crowded than usual with idle chatter but all seemed wrapped up in converstation of sorts. Well, most of them with the exception of one. That was the thing that caught her attention as she sat up a little straighter watching. The female watched as the boy navigated his way away from one of the tables making his way towards one of the more heavily decorated Christmas trees in the hall and just seemed to withdraw into himself, his legs retracting up to his chest. She frowned at that looking back at her plate of pie and back at the kid followed by a glance to the other students, some of which took barely any notice of the kid or if they did, paid little attention to it.
Now, Elena was no expert on body language or anything but as far as she could tell, something was very clearly wrong. After all, who just decided they wanted to get up and go curl into a ball right smack-dab middle in the midst of all these students who surely would have taken notice. Feeling a bit ticked off and angry that no one was paying him any regard, the girl thought she might as well give it a go considering it her personal misson now. After all, it was supposed to be a time of joy and happiness and as far as Elena could tell, that was not how someone reacted when they were feeling utter happiness. Quite the opposite in fact. She took her plate of pie with her as she made her way to the tree in question where the boy was.
Approaching cautiously, she put the plate of food on the ground as she knelt to come to eye-level with the distressed person noting the pumpkin juice he had with him. Good drink of choice, Elena thought as she figured out what to say. "Hey there." Her tone was gentle, soft almost as she posed the greeting waiting to see if he would respond in any form or fashion. "You doing alright there?" A simple yet innocent question. As far as the girl could tell, anyone who was like this was very much not alright but it was beyond her to pry too deep but she couldn't bear to witness him being disregarded like this. "I saw you come over here and thought I would just see if you needed anything."

The Sheep's Breakdown
As he held himself close curled up in a ball, he realized that the noise itself felt as if it was getting quieter. It was as if he was in his own little bubble where nobody could disturb it. He wanted nobody to pop his bubble, and perhaps maybe just maybe he could get some sleep. He was in the perfect position to simply lean into the warmth of the cold, prickly pine tree. He was in the perfect position to allow it to envelope him, and perhaps hide within the needles and thorns and allow himself to drift off into sleep. Thoughts that he needed to return to his room in order to sleep were brushed off, as the noises became fainter and fainter within his mind. He felt his muscles relax and his eyes flutter closed. This horrendous day would finally be over. Perhaps if he was lucky, someone would even be considerate enough to allow him to sleep within the Great Hall overnight. He began taking deep breaths.
...
...
...
"Hey there."
His eyes immediately snapped open as he felt a sudden pang within his head. It was so loud again, everything was so so so loud. He rubbed his eye as if he had truly been sleeping as he let her continue. Moment by moment he felt a boiling sensation within him that felt it was going to burst at any moment. Words passed through his brain as he hardly comprehended what she was saying, and only the volume it felt as if she was saying it. It may have been gentle, but the day was not over. All he wanted was for the day to be over. The heat was building up within him until she finally stopped
"Would ya SHUT UP already?" he snapped at the girl with a harshness of tone that certainly did not match his appearance. the words clearly having gone right over his head. "It's MY business, why dontcha stay out of it? he added, but this time a bit of distress leaked into his voice.
He was not even directing it at her at the end of the day, but yet his brain could not comprehend it. His amygdala was far more active than he would have liked it. Everything felt so loud. His brain felt so fuzzy. He groaned and put his head between his legs again, except this time he felt tears threaten to fall. Why was he upset? He was NOT upset, he was just.. angry was all. This was not HIS fault, it was the world's. They were the ones being so loud, not him.

[/quote]Elena flinched a little at the sudden outburst. You see, in usual circumstances, the Gryffindor third-year girl would have not taken so kindly to someone being so direct with her but given the boy's current mood and the way he was withdrawn, Elena decided to let it slide though one thing was clear. She was not going to be shutting up even if it earned her a few more brash comments in return. It wasn't anything she couldn't take, it would take a lot more than that to get a rise out of her and even that would take some effort. "You're right, you know it is your buisness." Elena said agreeing waiting to see how he would respond to those words as she began to carefully work her way into how she could mediate this troublesome situation.
"You don't have to tell anyone anything but I just couldn't help it. The holidays are supposed to be a time of happiness and joy, ya know? Seeing you all bunched up like this really tears at my heart, everyone deserves a day here and there where they can just be..themselves." That same, kind, gentle tone accompanied her voice as she shifted into a sitting position next to the boy. "Let's start off slow, shall we? Names? Mine's Elena. Elena Jangleton." It was sort of like how you treated a disease, slow and methodical, don't rush the issue or you could wind up doing more damage than you thought. Internally, the Gryffindor was hoping he didn't like lash out or attempt to hex her or something. People could do all sorts of things when they were going through stuff but looking at how defensive he was, she doubted it.
"Food?" A hand pushed the plate of pecan pie towards him to see if he would take it. It tended to have an calming effect, she didn't know what it was but once someone began munching on something, it was like a light bulb had been switched on in their head. The groan of frustration reached her ears but she said nothing simply sitting there and waiting. One thing was certain however, she was not going to leave this boy alone, it didn't matter if they were here for minues, hours, days. Elena Jangleton had now made it her personal holiday misson to make sure than when he got up and walked away from here, it was a smile on his face or at least a tad bit grumpier than he originally was. He wasn't like some of the other kids who's snobby attitude and personality was a result of privileged childhood, it was out of helplessness.
She knew it far too well having been in a similar situation herself far too many times. "You don't know me and I don't know you but I just want you to know you're not alone so let's talk?" She didn't even care if it was just something of minor importance. If Elena could just get him to engage in converstation a bit, she would consider that a minor victory at best. "Or we can keep sitting here in silence until you're ready, your call." People would surely cast them a odd look here and there, after all, it wasn't everyday that two Hogwarts student decided sitting by the Christmas tree was a normal thing but Elena could hardly care. There was something about him, perhaps it was his body language, his tone, she felt almost mandated to help. She couldn't really chalk it down to a reason of why she was doing what she was other than the goodness of her heart. Elena knew what it felt like to be alone, to feel like everything was crashing down, it was a concept that hit too close to home and she would make damn well sure no one had to experience what she had.

The Sheep's Breakdown
As Ross processed the kind words, he was hit with an overwhelming pang of guilt. It felt as if someone had stabbed him in the chest with a knife and twisted it before taking it back out. She meant well- she was not the one making the noise. She was only trying to assist him. He just hurt a perfectly fine person, yet he could hardly keep his mind on not doing it again. It was only then that he felt the salty tears flow down his pale cheeks. It was not her fault the world was so loud, it was the world's fault. He sniffled into his knees before peaking out a bit to disrupt the flow of tears with his sleeves.
Just by peaking, he finally could get a good view of who she was. Just from her appearance he could tell she was either older or more mature than him, and both made him feel worse about the situation. He felt like a child who had done something wrong. There was a reason Ross avoided breaking the rules, and it was the horrendous scenarios such as these. He always would remember the overwhelming feeling of guilt within his body as he froze up and attempted to apologize for his actions when he broke a key rule at school. He would never be able to not recall how he was chastised for his actions. It burned, he could not stand the disapproval of others.
"O..O' course I do it's.. it's why i'm over here and such." he mumbled as he put his face back between his knees once more, desperately attempting to cover the tears that kept flowing.
The tone still sounded harsh, as if it was defensive. Ross hardly took note of it, all he was taking note of was how everybody else seemed to be acting. The girl had managed to isolate his attention on her. It seemed far more quiet; however, he felt as if he had no control over how he acted. It was like he was spectating from the other side of the room.
She continued to speak to him kindly, which Ross could hardly comprehend. Why was she being nice to him when he was in such a state? It only enforced the guilt more. Was the day his fault? He felt so out of control. He felt as if he was going crazy. As she finished her beginning, he allowed there to be a pause. He sniffled until he was certain the tears had stopped, in which he allowed himself to peak out of his knees and at her again. As touching as her words were, they frustrated him as well. He could not stay positive right now. All he wanted to do was merge with the tree beside him.
"T..the holidays aren't the time for that. Everyone's gone and... and you gotta be alone. and nothin' good comes of it!" he lashed out before feeling the familiar sensation of his eyes leaking once more. This time, he did not retreat inside of his little safe space he had claimed for himself. "There's nothin' good of it at all!" the words stumbled out, reinforcing his 'beliefs' once more.
He hugged his knees into himself tighter as if it was a comfort stuffed animal of sorts. He expected her to bring up how wonderful the Holidays were. Instead, she asked a question that caught him off guard. He loved when people caught him off guard; however, right now he would have adored everything to have been simply predictable and bland. Somewhere quiet and warm like the common room or.. under the Christmas tree perhaps. He once again felt the temptation to climb under it like some form of terrified cat. Even so, she kept the question simple. It forced him to think, to remind himself. He instinctively reached for the ring on his finger and started fidgeting with it.
"Ross... Ross Stephens, but it isn't really important. nothin' about me is really important..." he mumbled self deprecatingly.
It was blatant he was not fishing for compliments, because even he seemed mildly surprised it came out like that. His oversharing filter seemed completely turned off, but he seemed completely unaware that that was a thought he had to share in the first place. He had not even considered that being a problem of his, yet he could hardly pay attention to his own words and actions. It was everyone else's that mattered currently.
As she pushed a plate of pecan pie towards him, he cringed at the noise the plate made against the floor. It felt as if all of his senses were going off. Still, that was balanced out by the smell. Oh the smell of Hogwarts dessert could make anyone risk their life for a taste. His stomach growled, and it did seem... rather convenient. But what if she was trying to poison him? Of course she was not trying to poison him. His senses were going against himself. He wasn't hungry- of course he was hungry.
He looked to the side and let out a quiet "thanks..." making it rather unclear if he was accepting the food or not, yet at the end of the day he knew he would end up smuggling the plate to the Hufflepuff common room.
As he stared to the side, the kind words came once again. Every part of him was tearing him apart. Was he hungry or was he not? Was it too loud or was it too quiet? Was he happy or was he not? He could not find a single answer, yet he still found himself appreciating her company. It frustrated him to no end, but he also found relief in it.
"I dunno..." he mumbled, still looking off to the side. He allowed there to be silence for a moment, until he finally felt a jumble of words flow out. "I just.. I dunno if i'm important and all that and i keep gettin' replaced and i dunno I keep lyin'... and i'm supposed to be a detective i'm supposed to know but i dunno... and i feel sorta annoying and i just dunnoifwhati'mdoingisright" He managed to get out.
Tears began to flow again through the jumble of words. It was blatant he only had formed the concept of the sentence beforehand by the way he spoke. It sounded frustrated- angry even. yet there was something pathetic about it. It was feelings based and only that. Ross could not even list specific examples from where he got the ideas.

The Sheep's Breakdown
@Ross Stephens
Ross. A fine name, a good name. She nodded encouragingly filing it away. They were making progress at least, they had established some sort of connection, this she could work with. Sometimes, addressing people by their name went to show there was at least some level of trust that was present even if it wasn't a whole lot. Elena could work with that. Whatever he was going through. Elena wasn't sure she held the solution in her hands but she could make certain of one thing, she could at least make it known that he was not going to be alone in it whatever it was. Perhaps it was being homesick? It certainly seemed so from the way he went on and on about the Christma holidays and honestly, she couldn't blame him. The imagery of the Hogwarts Express waiting for smiling, laughing students to board it home for the break, the groups of friends enaged in idle converstations, all the memories flashed throug her head. Not everyone was as lucky to witness such moments, such was the reality.
"Alone? No one says you got to be alone. Whoever told you that is full of themselves. Look, I know that loner feeling, it's why I'm here talking to you. You don't have to tell me what's going on but as long as you're not alone, that's what important. It's why I'm here." It was true, the past two holidays in the castle, Elena knew far too well the feeling of being isolated, having no one to interact with, having your friends go home for the break and then there she was all alone knowing she was better off staying back at Hogwarts rather than immersing herself with that accursed group of people Elena called her family. Her and Ross were alike in a sense, she couldn't quite place it but it was something about him, perhaps it was his words. He had at least taken note of the food but not accepted it yet. A start, no need to rush anything.
She listened with avid years as he began to talk a bit and that for her was a fleeting victory. Sure, he wasn't any happier but at least this way, he had begun to open up a bit and that was something she could work with. His words were rushed but Elena got the general jist of it nodding as she began to formulate a reply. It was perfect really as his words echoed around in her head. That constant feeling of worthlessness, an philsophy the Jangleton girl herself had struggled with for so long. "Why would you be unimportant, Ross? You know what I think? I think that if you really thought you were unimportant, you wouldn't be doing this. The simple fact that you're willing to talk about it shows me that you are an important part of this entire process." Perhaps it was something else? Family drama? Grades? People? All were perfectly good reasons in her head.
A brief period of silence followed before the girl spoke again. "You know, I know we just met and I know I'm probably the last person in the world who knows anything about what's going on but I know that feeling." She tilted her head sideways to see if Ross would at least meet her gaze from his withdrawn state. "No one who cares, no one to talk to, people just going about their daily lives without even sparing you a glance making you feel like a fly on the wall." She had seen the rabble of kids entering and exiting the hall, not one, not a single one had spared this poor boy any attention, something that had compelled her to take up that role. "I've been going to Hogwarts three years now and each year, it's the same feeling. But that doesn't mean you're any less than the next person. Why are you any different than anyone else simply because you're having a bad day?" Was it working? She hoped so. She had been chosing her words with the utmost care waiting to see his reactions.

Ross used his sleeve to wipe the tears that seemed to never stop flowing. He felt increasingly aware of how disgusting he was going to feel as he attempted to sleep that night an dhow much he would love to change into far more dry, comfortable clothes once more. He could still feel his heart pounding in his chest, but only just then did it occur to him it was beating far faster than it was supposed to be. He was panicking. To any outside source that would have been obvious, but it was an eye-opening moment. He was drunk on emotions, and he was just now beginning to sober up. It was as if her words were a cold glass of water down his throat, clearing his head of gibberish. Luckily for him, he was still drunk enough to not consider the hangover that came next.
Her words were touching, enough to almost bring him back to earth. Almost. She was right about everything but one- he was alone. Well, he knew he was not technically alone. His head was screaming LIAR as he listened to his own tangent come out of his mouth. He was a drifter. Nobody to spend Christmas with ,but enough people to be able to enjoy classes as he drifted back and fourth between people. Still, the sudden guilt he felt from his rant and the warmth in his heart informed him he appreciated it.
"T..thank you, bein' lonely sucks... he hiccupped, looking straight at her. It was direct, he was acknowledging her feelings too. "but i... it's different! I'm all alone with nothin' but myself. Dunno anyone who... has reached out to me or anythin' within the last couple months." he mumbly rushed, looking off to the side once more.
Part of him was aware how it was on him for not reaching out to his friends. He was aware that he just needed to put fourth the effort, but he struggled. It was no fair. It felt as if people should just come to HIM. Before he could put much thought into it, she began addressing the second part of his 'problem'. Was it a problem? He could hardly comprehend anything. It felt fuzzy. Still, he managed to comprehend her words, which still touched him. He noted she was rather mature earlier, but she still gave off the energy just by the way she spoke. It was quite the juxtaposition between how much of a mess he was at the current moment. It was not as if he himself was aware of it, but he would realize in the morning. An apology letter was to be expected if he could recall her name.
"I.. but... but I.... he struggled to think of a rebuttal before sighing and looking at his knees "... I guess ya got some sense there" he muttered.
It felt as if he was just disproven in an argument about his own self worth, and yet despite the fact she won he won as well. It was only when she began to use ethos that the guilt really started setting in. She had been in the shoes, yet she was handling it better than him. In fact, she was in his shoes. There was somewhat a comfort and a pain in knowing someone else had the same feelings as him. He was at a loss for words. Every word she said described how he felt. Instead of thanking her or changing his perspective, he could only get one phrase out.
"... How do ya... do it? how do ya keep it together?" he sniffled out

Thank Merlin.
Thank Merlin a hundred times over. He seemed to be composing himself a little bit at least. It seemed her words had done something finally. Elena honestly felt a bit happy about herself. She had seen many things at Hogwarts, some good, some bad. The castle was a lot of things and sometimes, that could really turn a person upside down. She had witnessed it done to herself ranging from the mosp attack at the Blossom Ball not to mention that the headmaster dissappearing off the face of the earth for some time had defnitely left it's mark on the school as well. However, Elena had accepted it and ever since those events of the ball, she had felt this sort of protective nature. The Gryffindor didn't know what to make of it or where it came from, perhaps it had something to do with Lamik having seen him jump into action after those bugs had swarmed the field. Whatever it was, she had opted to take on that same attitude and here, one year later, here she was still coping with things yet helping others cope as well. It was sort of a duty to her at this point to be honest but just that scene of Ross bundled up near the tree was one she just could not walk by. She had to do something and Elena was doing just that.
"People aren't going to reach out to ya if you're all huddled about your feelings. I used to be like that and things only got progressively worser." She still remembered the day she had miracously tumbled down the stairs to the Owlery. Boy, oh, boy, that had not been one of her finer moments and it certainly was not a miracle in any sense. "I let somone get close to me and they end up being one of the most amazing friends I could ask for." Elena said quietly. It was weird really how it worked but she too had been pleasantly surprised at the positive trend things had taken. Sure, there were still a lot of things going on that even Adlai was not privy to knowing but she knew enough and that had sort of a relieved feeling for Elena, a sort of ease that she had a second soul to rely on, someone that would back her up if she ever needed it. It made her feel almost happy in a sense.
"How do I do it?" She repeated the question almost thoughtfully as thinking about it herself. Honestly , the Gryffindor didn't really have a routine or plan on how things had turned out. She had just done the things she had done and it all sort of meshed together. She supposed there had to be some sort of routine to the chaos as the question resounded in her head. "You just have to find your own crowd of people, you know? My best friends wound up being a Slytherin and Hufflepuff yet here I am in the house of the lions." She honestly had not been expecting it to turn out that way. Hufflepuff, sure but anyone else who knew Elena also knew about her extreme negative views regarding Slytherin House yet she had somehow managed to create more pleasant interactions with them than her own house-mates, funny really how that had turned out.
"Those people are gonna be your best helpers. Even if you're wrong, they'll still be on your side because you're important for them. " A small smile graced her features as she nodded encouragingly. She had come in her first year alone, surrounded, even shared that boat ride with the most arrogant Gryffindor to boot, everything had felt so hostile. But now, it wasn't that way, it actually felt quite nice, she could finally call the castle her home. "Hell, I've only been talking to you for a couple of minutes but I think you're important! Someone, somewhere, someplace cares about you, remember that." Elena briefly wondered if she should take up a counseling role or something, the female was just formulating her thoughts into words and it was just tumbling out sentence after sentence and so far, it seemed to be going pretty alright.

The Sheep's Breakdown
He was aware she was correct and it only hurt him more. Hogwarts had been a new start for him. In fact, he hardly talked to anyone in his home town. He remained in the shadows and he enjoyed it, but he forced himself to change that at Hogwarts. He recalled his first time sitting at the Hufflpuff table attempting to bring up conversation with a girl. While it did not lead to much, he felt small sense of pride within himself. He was so used to constantly being caught up within himself that finally getting out of his own business and into someone else's felt wonderful. It had been a change for sure. He had met so many wonderful, intriguing people the year prior that he had gotten into the business of and 'solved.' People were like free mysteries with friendship as the reward, after all.
Yet over Summer, he had contacted not a single one of them. In fact, he had not even said hi to one of them in the hallways. He had left himself alone. He even celebrated his own birthday alone. He had not been spiteful- more of, he planned to spend it alone. Yet he did not like being alone in that way. It was as if he enjoyed torturing himself, but at the same time he was perfectly content with his parent's birthday gift and nothing more.
He only could find himself sighing and nodding in response, hoping it spoke for itself. The words simply failed when it came to it. She had nailed his exact feelings, and it made him uncomfortable. He was tired, he was hungry, and he felt hopeless. She knew exactly what was happening. He found solving people a fun game, but he had never been solved himself. In fact, he never considered himself interesting enough to look into in that way. He never really thought about himself much at all, but how could he? There was so much external stimulus there was no reason to look at the internal stimulus.
He was snapped out of his confusion as she began to inform him of how she did it. He NEEDED the answer. Perhaps it was how tired he was, but he felt like it could unlock the secret to the universe. If he could figure this out, maybe he could figure the rest of his life out. Of course, that's what mattered when one could not even process too much noise, right?
Her answer, to be frank, disappointed him. That was so difficult. He searched EVERYWHERE, yet he struggled to find anyone who bothered with him. It was always a one time encounter, but it at least let him wander between people. He faced friendly smiles all around the school, yet he could always feel so alone. With her recent response, it came across his mind that possibly everyone felt like that at his age.
He felt lost until she called him important. Until she pointed out there was hope. Was there hope? Of course there was hope. There had to be. If everyone felt like this then there was no way he could be the only one alone, right? He blatantly lit up.
"... ya really think so?" he inquired, only now feeling tears threaten to pour once more.

"I do and you should do too." Elena affirmed nodding at him. In her mind, it was quite a simple philsophy really any way you looked at it. Everyone within Hogwarts had their own unique talents, their own way of doing things that set them apart but in that same regard, that didn't make them different also. The Gryffindor firmly believed and was the message she wanted to drive home today. "Who says you can't be important? You know yourself best, you have a place here, we all know you do, why else would they send that first-day Hogwarts acceptance letter? Because they know you belong! You're important." It was a nice little analogy she threw into the mix to cheer him up a little. Elena herself had not felt it at first thining surely it must be a hoax, a joke, some sort of prank or something. After all, no proud wizarding school would dare to accept the disgraced daugther of a wealthy wizarding family but here she was so Elena supposed something must have been done right.
She was beginning to sound like a philsopher. Going on and on about values, life and whatnot but the Gryffindor had made it her personal misson to make sure that when both of them left this twinkling, evergreen tree decorated in all it's glory, it would be with a smile on Ross's face. The girl liked to perform exlempary at everything she did whether it was getting good grades on the various mind-crunching homework assignemts they were assigned or helping someone who was feeling under the weather cheer up a bit. Ross was not about to mess up that streak so she would be doing everything in her power to ensure that he left feeling a hundred times better than when he had waltzed over to this tree, that dark cloud of agony and other negative emotions hanging over him.
"No one said it was gonna be easy but we all have to start somewhere." A part of her was curious really, was it the loneliness? Something else? The sudden way he had just made a beeline for this little spot. She chalked it up to homesickness, it was fairly common among the younger years at the castle. It was weird, she had to admit being at Hogwarts during a time that should be spent at home enjoying, relishing in the warm embraces of your family. Elena did not have that luxury and apparently neither did Ross. "If it helps..do you want to talk over food or something? That way, you'll have company for the time being." Her head nodded toward the House tables which despite their relative lengthy converstation were still laden with food. Funny really, how those house elves worked, there had to be some sort of secret to it.
"After all, someone has to finish that pie, don't you agree?" A small smile resting on her face. He had seen it but not touched it, maybe a second attempt would work. The Hufflepuff seemed calmer now and she reckoned the House tables were a much better spot than under the low-hanging branches of a Christmas tree. It had been worth it though if it meant she had made someone's day. Some insisted she was too nice, others said it was just perfect, Elena didn't know who was right but one thing she did know. No one deserved to feel like they were being cast aside, she had lived that life all too well and wished it among no one, if she could do something to change that, she would undertake that misson without a second thought.
